It will be renewed from the date the paperwork is done. We usually start the renewal on the expiry date, hence making use of the grace period and making more than a year out if it.

I used to love NKD, but when I realized they had soy in it I just stopped having it. Soy is an endocrine disruptor and pretty much shuts down your thyroid, messes with your s*x hormones and is just all round bad news. edited by Chocobella on 23/10/2014 Well, I guess it would hurt if you eat it on a weekly basis. We have N_K_D maybe once every two months and I doubt that will shut down my thyroid or mess with my hormones.

Mine gets 30 aed an hour Depends: if you hire her via an agency she won't get nearly that much. She will get paid a bare minimum. The agency will keep the larger part to cover costs while making a hefty profit at the same time. Most agency's will indeed charge 30-40 AED/hr

To answer the question regarding hijab: I think that a Muslim maid who does not wear hijab in her CV picture is showing a lack of desire to conform and I am not interested in a non-conformist maid in my household.... Anon, again out of interest, not picking a fight, but do you apply that standard to maids only, or to Muslims in general? And do you consider a non-conformist (as in not wearing a hijab) to not be a true Muslim? I'm asking because I have quite a few Muslim friends not wearing hijab. But as far as I can see they are true Muslims. They pray, fast, don't drink or smoke etc. One of them has a daughter who went to school in Sharjah and was constantly picked on because her mum was not wearing hijab. Surely that can't be right?

Lots and lots of water and then some. Other than that just the usual things. Depending on when you're going you might want to bring an extra blanket as it can get cold in the desert at night.

Your landlord should be responsible for A/C maintenance and servicing. that said, any LL's just do the bare minimum so if you really want a clean system get professionals to do it. If it's smoke or smell from your neighbour I don't think buying new filters will be the solution. Sounds more like the system is crooked as smells should not enter other apartments. Just try and clean your filters first. It's easy to take them out and wash them in the sink or bathtub. Or get a non-binding quote from a company like Sani Service, they will give you an honest opinion.

The following is only my opinion. When I am looking to hire a maid from an agency, these are the characteristics I look for: 30s with Gulf experience but not UAE (2 years or more). I don't care about religion or nationality because you can get good and bad in all of that. I just find that someone who is a bit more mature and who has worked before in the GCC will be a better fit in my household. Some of the maid CVs that I have seen recently are quite surprising. Some of them are dressed very unmaidlike and that turns me off. I also would not hire a Muslim who is not wearing hijab. Just out if interest, if you don't care about religion why does it matter if a Muslim is wearing hijab or not? OP, I think it doesn't matter wether you hire directly from abroad or Dubai. You have god and bad in both. It's the click that matters and wether or not you feel comfortable with her in your house.

I can't imagine the new bridge being completed in a year! (or six months in each direction). When I think of highway bridges and flyovers under construction back home, while the main highway was still in operation, it took years, not just one. Even the big flyover by the Dubai Mall took several years. People working in DIFC/Sheikh Zayed may want to start taking the metro. My Dad - who works in construction always remarks on how long they take in the UK on building bridges, they seem to be a lot quicker here - fingers crossed :) In the UK (and most western countries for that matter) there is not enough construction work and money to keep the workers going, so there's an economical motivation to take a long time on construction work. Here there's so much construction going on that the labourers can be moved from one project to the other with the speed of lightning.

You are spot on. EW's policy with regards to them sending spam is ridiculous. I suppose it has commercial reasons: all their advertisers will pay more the larger their database is. I tried many things, including reporting all EW as spam and trying to get another email address on my account. Now I'm just deleting without reading, but it seems to be getting more and more so I'm seriously considering quitting EW for good.

With the constant teaching her how to clean house and even basics like wash hands before touching any utensils,food.... it's just getting too much. edited by Visnakova on 19/10/2014 Quite honestly, I think you should step up now or find another maid.

This is ridiculous, she's there to make your life easier, not more difficult. I'm with Izzy: she eats what you eat (pretty normal in any household) or she buys her own. With respect to,eft overs, if you are using them as an extra meal tell her not to eat it! Depending on where you live/shop and how much her salary, I would think 500 AED to be a very generous food allowance. She's only been with you one month, probably trying you out. Set the rules NOW, before it's too late.

It may be a nuisance, but really no more than that. She pays for her own flight and can either make up for the days lost or you can take a week of her leave next year. As for her replacement: you can take her up on her offer or get a temp. maid via an agency. I do find employers, not you in particular OP, rather egocentric more often than not. Many of us fly back home a couple of times a year for major or minor reasons. Why can't we accept that our maids may also have a valid reason to go home outside their annual leave?

Interesting thread this, apparently nobody likes them and hardly anyone ever goes. Yet, this forum is filled with questions about where to go for brunch and these questions usually get quite a few answers. And all brunches are filled to the max every Friday. I never go to the big brunches where kids are running around while their parents are getting drunk. There are however a few high quality brunches like Traiteur, Palace Hotel Downtown and La Parilla who do small scale and/or partly à la carte brunches. They're pricey, but worth it.

Thank you oopsiedaisy. If the maid agreed to have the leave at same time as family went home is she entitled to it? My friend isn't being difficult but they went on leave in June and the extra salary wasn't mentioned and now it has. If it was agreed that she would take leave at that time then no, she isn't entitled to an extra months salary. You get either the month off or an extra months salary in lieu, not both. If leave wasn't agreed then your friend needs to pay the extra month. Yes, that's correct.

Yes, correct. 13th month is confusing. She gets 12 month's salary for 11 month work in a year. If she works 12 month you pay her an extra month.

We're the same. We can't justify the extra cost when it's so much cheaper to go via Schipol :) Unfortunately KLM is only cheaper when indeed transferring through Schiphol. If Amsterdam is your final destination, Emirates is often cheaper. I know why, but I still think it's crazy :-(

Our maid waters the garden, mows the lawn, cleans the pool and washes the cars, all within her regular 4/5 days , 7/9 hours a day. She even likes throttling around outside and "playing" with water. If I were OP I certainly wouldn't link the pay rise you gave her to the extra chores you're giving her. She will then feel it's oke to ask for more money every time something new comes up. Mows the lawn? Washes the cars? throttling? wow is there anything your maid does not do? Lol, checked the translation, throttling should be pottering. There lot's of things she doesn't do, but they are of no concern to you.

Ha ha! I'm in the Marina, just by the tram and I guarantee you that dealing with the traffic restrictions at the moment is not worth the dates!! What is 'second stage'? Does it mean dried? They are dried. Thanks for the responses. FFx No, dried is third stage, in which case the best way to store them is in the fridge. They'll keep up to 6 months. Second stage dates are also called rhubab (I think). You buy them from the freezer (Bateel has them) and store them there as well. Or they may be given to you by a local with his own date palms. It's the stage before drying (and/or stuffing).

no its really renovating....they get new kitchen and so on. This is what some of the staff told us. But here the workers are so slow...they were supposed to open already....but now its delayed. Totally disagree. Nowhere in the (western) world have I seen building projects, small or big, executed at the speed of the UAE. I believe re-opening is a strategic decision of management. Why would they re-open at a time that there are hardly any tourists at the hotel, and many residents are still, away for the school holidays. They are probably sending staff out on holidays, all to come back and re-open after Sumer. Same as with all shops renovating in the malls. Actually, I think there is something wrong with Maya. Two closures in as many years? Unusual. Hmm, didn't know. I really like their Friday brunch with full beach&pool access. And the food and cocktails are good.

Attacked? Really what utter nonsense, people who are being attacked are hardly writing on a forum now are they? Let's just have a little reality check here; there are families being attacked in the news not soo far from here, having their relatives massacred in front of them, being made homeless and orphaned, then there are women being raped in the name of war and children left with no food in their tummies, no medical treatment and their homes wrecked, gone forever. Those people are being attacked and so are all the others in the world who are living in war zones. Attacked are people who have no freedom of speech, born of the wrong colour of religion. Attacked are those who recently got blown out of the sky. Attacked is not a word to be used in receiving a few snarky comment on a forum! Really there is far more to life than this place. Lolacat love, what is wrong with you. Yesterday you were denying non British nationals the right to discuss your Royals and claiming to know it all, lecturing Genie on her understanding of etiquette. Today you are ATTACKING a newbie because her choice of words is not up to par with you undoubtedly superior knowledge of the English vocabulair. The comparison you make to war zones is totally uncalled for. What a horrible thing to say.............can't you be positive? You are exactly the type of poster the OP is referring to.........you only step into threads to be mean............i shall write to the admin with a request they change your name from opps to meanie opps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Instead of thumbing down posters who are willing to pay a decent salary of 3000aed, why don't you just reply to the OP and mention what you pay or would be willing to pay? I agree that 4000-6500 is excessive, but 2750 or 3000 certainly isn't in my book. The maids pay anything between 700 and 1000 for a bed in Satwa and their transport, clothing, toiletries and most of their meals are also paid from their live-out salaries. And as for 2 days off, for many employers with a live-out maid privacy is the main reason. I don't want her hanging around in the weekend, and she also gets every day DH gets.
