That's the one Ilovechoos! Doh! Should have thought of looking in Uraban Dictionary. LOL at that definition. I wonder what "deck" is short for *scratches head*. Ahhhh I am obviously getting too old for this now. Bring back the hypercolour t-shirt, I say! Thanks everyone!

I don't think so. I am seeing moustache jewelry being worn by fashionable young Muslim women. Surely they would not be advertising Mo-vember???

Priscilla - you might want to post your photo on the FB Group Page for Meadows, Lakes and Springs. There are a few members living around that area I'm sure who can keep an eye open for him. https://www.facebook.com/groups/356982741075640/ The group only accepts membership from those living in the area, so you know you will be hitting your target audience directly.

We did. We went out past Al Qudra. All I got was a crook neck. DH reckons he saw 7, DS2 says he saw 3 but I suspect he was just saying that to placate DH. DS1 and I saw nothing. We hung around for an hour. Long enough for the police to stop by and ask us if everything was ok (it was 12 midnight, LOL). It's hard to get away from the lights. Presumably that was our problem, well that and the dust/humidity. I could see stars but not that many.

You might want to try querying the members of the Meadows, Lakes, Springs FB Group for a more direct answer: https://www.facebook.com/groups/356982741075640/ I should add you can only join ths group if you are actually living in MLS, it is a closed group. edited by The Original BMAP on 11/08/2013

I think expat communities can be a bit of a hothouse for friendships. Because most people are transient, without family support and possibly feeling vulnerable, friendships develop very quickly and can end just as quickly for various reasons - not just a perceived incompatibility. You don't know what's going on behind closed doors - financially, relationship-wise or anything else for that matter. I have known of 2 families now in my circle of acquaintance who upped and left at literally a day's notice. One of them not even that. The first her good friends heard of her leaving, she was already home in Australia! Not even a chance to say goodbye! It's different to your home country where you have the luxury of developing relationships slowly and having the 6-degrees of separation, shared values, a common culture etc. But seriously, don't take it to heart. Chalk it up to the expat experience and it is all part of the learning.

You sound pretty reasonable. I think the way she's handled it says more about her than it does about you. How do you get over it? Thank your lucky stars you and your kids weren't closer to her and her kids, and move on! Plenty of nice people out here looking for genuine friendship. Good luck!

THere is a shop out in Dragonmart along the main drag that sells a lot of silcon moulds (sp?) and cake pop moulds. I haven't looked but it may also sell decorating equipment. Trying to remember where it is. I think if you park at FA then walk towards the back of the dragon it is on your right. edited by The Original BMAP on 06/08/2013

PoV, I don't respond very often to these threads but I can hear the dismay in your tone and given how late it is I suspect you won't be sleeping very well... There's really no hard evidence in what you've put forward. All of those incidents could probably be explained away and perhaps you are just feeling so tired and blimpy your self confidence has taken a hit and you are seeing ghosts. Do you think that's possible? Men do change when wives become pregnant. I've seen a few of them grow up a bit and become more considerate of others. Perhaps yours is doing that? I hope so anyway. All the best.

As far as I know, all rent rises are now driven by the rent index calculator. A renewable contract will not spare you from this any longer. I also believe JI villas are subject to cooling charges that are quite high. Meadows, Lakes, Springs are not. Don't know about JP. As others have pointed out, where it's a new estate with facilities still to be built, do not believe the time lines the agents give you. For example the clubhouse in JI was delivered 2 years' after it's stated deadline (at least that's what I've been told). Better to make your rental decision based on "what you see is what you get". Where is your DH located for work?

As Plum said, Jumeirah Park is only recently built. The villas are supposed to be very nice with a good layout, but that is it. There are no facilities (pools, clubs etc), no greenery. In fact some of the LL's are doing a deal whereby the tenants do the landscaping of the villa and the rent is marginally reduced - quid pro quo. If you can live with that environment for a couple of years, go for it. Jumeirah Islands has been established for several years. The landscaping is complete, the Clubhouse opened 18 months or so ago (2 years after they promised it I believe). I am told the service and food there is not great, but it is a nice venue for the pool and bar. I go there occasionally for Women's Social Club meetings. One of my best mates lives in JI and we looked at several villas there when we first arrived but ultimately settled across the road in the Meadows. She describes JI as somewhat isolating. There are 2 entry/exit points - at the top and the bottom so you have to wind your way through and over speed bumps to get anywhere. There is not much mixing between the villas as they are set back more than the villas in Meadows/Springs/Lakes with no common parks where kids can go meet. She and her family come across to Meadows for celebrations such as Halloween because it just doesn't happen in JI. We ultimately chose Meadows because it was cheaper (we could use the money for travelling), houses had better layout, more easily accessible, had lots of safe bike paths around lakes, options to meet friends and neighbours at the local community pool, walking distance to the gyms, supermarket etc. I personally feel for us it was the right choice. Good luck.

They sell lots of Iranian style manteau's upstairs in Day to Day in Deira (opp DCC). I love that style of clothing and have always wondered if it was possible to buy in Dubai, so thanks for this information. Are they ready made in this shop, do you know? Thinking they would be great to wear home for the winter, over pants.

Well if you think it is a good idea adooli then go for it and see how far you get. But if you consider opinion here to be a random snapshot of the Dubai population, then do the sums and get the statistics. How many responses? How many positive? There you go - what percentage might indulge in your business and does that make it a viable business plan? Personally if I had a daughter and wanted her to feel accomplished, I would be educating her and teaching her skills like music and sport, wanting her to grow up wiht a healthy body and mind. Not putting her in a competition - talent quest, beauty quest or otherwise where she has to perform like a monkey in front of all and sundry where there is one winner and a lot of losers. But, hey, that's just me. edited by The Original BMAP on 23/06/2013

OK, sorry. I responded somewhat emotionally as I was so surprised at this suggestion. What is your long term vision for women in this part of the world? If you want to do something that will add value, set up a business that will encourage and help young girls to be assertive, study and gain independence through knowledge and skills so that they no longer have to rely on the goodwill of husbands and their families to support them. So that they are not "sold" like commodities through dowry negotiations and have the freedom to make choices about how they want to live their lives. Sit down and have a real think about your idea and what it means on the larger scale of things. Particularly in this region. Are beauty pageants really part of your personal values????

Honestly? I think it's disgusting. As if young girls don't have enough pressure on them here to be skinny and beautiful. All these pageants do is sexualise them and add to the problems of women and self image in the world.

It sounds like you are intending to rent. In that case make sure all the documents are collected and make sense. YOu will need: Copy of LL's passport Title Deed of property Standard Lease that is renewable Evidence that all Community Fees have been paid (if villa is part of a larger compound) Check that DEWA has been paid off by last tenant Check that the water meter isn't turning over when all water is turned off. If it is, there is a leak somewhere. Check whether maintenance is provided as part of tenancy agreement. If not, I recommend you negotiate the lease down by the value of 10,000 AED if you want to take out an independent maintenance contract. Try and pay in multiple cheques. This way you have some security if things go wrong and some leverage to resolve big maintenance issues.

Meadows is a great place to live. Lots of greenery. Easy access to supermarkets and about 10 mins drive from both Ibn Battuta Mall and Mall of the Emirates. 10 mins as well from Marina and JBR with their lovely atmosphere and restaurants. Traffic getting to SZR and Al Khail road is not too bad, though there can be bottle necks to SZR during the morning peak hour. It is very safe. I regularly walk my dog or head out for walks with a friend after 8pm. Tonight I took a stroll to the local grocery shop at 9:30pm. It's all good. The villas are getting older though and are fraught with water issues depending on how well they've been maintained. Some also have some significant cracking due to subsidence or Damas trees getting into the foundations. On the whole though, they are well laid out and if you are not planning on buying and staying in one for the next 20 years they'll suit your needs during an assignment to Dubai. The people I know in M9, love it because it's quieter and lots of bird life. I personally wouldn't want to live that close to the high tension wires. M1 and 2 are right up the top close to SZR, but I think can be problematic to get in/out of at peak hours as there is not direct entry - you have to head a way down the road and due a U-turn which can mean you get caught in Emirates International School traffic. M5 is in a great position - halfway between Town Centre and Meadows Village. Access is off a roundabout so there is no faffing around if you want to go east or west. M5 does not have a community pool, but residents just use the pools in Springs 1 or Fitness First (if they are members). edited by The Original BMAP on 22/06/2013

We just paid ours today - 5 bedroom villa, 4 people, no pool but quite large yard with a couple of big trees that soak up the water. AED 2,600 for the last month. Mind you most of the money this time of year goes in electricity rather than water.

My son (8 year old) just had a party at Kadomz Dance Studio which is part of Favourite Things on Level 2 at Marina Mall. He's a bit older, but he had boys and girls there aged from 6 to 10 and they all seemed to have a great time. In fact several of them have approached me at school this week and said that was the best party they'd been to (I guess because it was a bit different). They start with painting a t-shirt which they get to take home. Then they have a dance instructor come and teach them some dance moves. She then divides them into teams of 3 - 4 kids and each team comes up with a short 2 min performance. Then it's just free dancing followed by food and cake. Total duration 2 hours Min 15 kids. Price around 1,900 dirhams.

DragonMart. If you park in the middle - around area FA where the lamps are - and walk towards the back of the dragon, there is a shop on the right hand side of the main aisle that sells all things Chinese - little character dolls, fans, brass feng shui ornaments, silk purses & slippers and I'm pretty sure, some small-ish brass gongs on little stands. I think it's name is Shanghai Lan Lan Gift Company and it is shop number HBI -06 I have a card for them but it's probably 18 months old so phone numbers may not work any more - 050 676 8394 or 050 956 3906. Good luck! Let us know if you find one there!

You won't find any "little" hotels around the harbour foreshore or CBD if that's what you're after. But you may find some boutique hotels within walking, ferry or busing distance if you look in areas like: East: Darlinghurst Surrey Hills Paddington Millers Point Woolloomooloo Potts Point West: Balmain And on the north side: Lavendar Bay Kirribilli MacMahons Point - this is our traditional viewing point. It is excellent unless the wind is in the wrong direction

I agree with Pikachu and PPM. She has done most of her course. All she has to do now is work under supervision for 6 months to be fully qualified (at least that's how I understood it). Why move back to the UK where she might not get credit and have to let all that work go by the wayside? Why go backwards if she may not have to? Ultimately she will have more earning potential if she has a qualification. She just has to tough it out for 6 months if she can. She's toughed out more than that following this poor excuse of a man around the globe for the last how ever many years! And I hate to say it, Salamander, but I suspect the marriage is already over. Perhaps this is part of the husband's plan to finish it by attrition. He is clearly conflict adverse. I think he's sending her a message loud and clear by his actions. He just doesn't have the balls or the respect for her to voice it. It's time to get angry FM. And the best revenge is success. Look after yourself and your daughters. That is all that counts. By definition of your husband's actions over the past years, they do not have a "father". He is not protecting them or working in their best interests. He is living like a single man. edited by The Original BMAP on 02/06/2013

Thank you so much once again..the above is a great help..i shall look into the above classes..any idea of where I can find the trx and cross fit? I would prefer somewhere on sheikh zayed road as I live near the garhoud bridge Fitness First hold a couple of different TRX classes. NOt sure about where you could do Cross Fit here. I think someone was doing it down on one of the beaches over winter, but probably not now. Unfamiliar with the Garhoud area I'm afraid. As for protein shakes, I use EAS (which is a reputable American Brand) out here. 100% whey protein shakes. The taste isn't too bad. You get used to it. Try and have them about 30 mins after doing your resistence work as they also have Branch Chain Amino Acids in them which will stimulate muscle repair. You asked about Pilates earlier. It will help strengthen your core which in turn will help avoid injury when you are doing resistance work. If the right exercises are included, it will also help you keep a lean line. When you do a lot of weights, your muscles, by the very nature of the process, get shortened. Pilates will help lengthen them out which will keep you looking slender/leaner rather than chunky. Think about the body lines of ballet dancers as opposed to weight lifters. On a similar note, make sure you stretch out particularly at the end of any resistance work. Good luck! Come back and tell us how you're doing.

Classes: I am not big on as I prefer to put on my iPod and Heart rate Monitor and manage it myself. But ones I would recommend are: TRX - uses body weight with big straps. Developed by the marines so their men could exercise in confined spaces. Will be great for building muscle. Is very challenging hence lso very rewarding. If you do a TRX Circuit it will be combined with cardio so you get a double benefit. Cross-Fit is also pretty hardcore and a combination of strength and cardio. Yes, zumba will burn calories depending on how hight your heart rate goes. I know you don't like spin but it is great for thighs and butts if you work the resistance right. Pilates is good for core strength which will help you protect yourself from injuries as you do the resistance work and generally improve your posture. Don't forget to stretch, as the resistence work will shorten your muscles, yoga and pilates will help with that. For a website to track cals, try Calorie King. They also have forums you can join in discussions and seek advice from. And its free.

My Opinion: Increase the lean protein in your diet - yes, protein shakes, don't forget eggs are good (eg egg white omelette for breakkie etc). Increase the challenge of your weights to build more muscle. Do weights maybe 3 x a week so it's 50:50 weights: cardio. Muscle will increase your metabolic rate so your body will burn more fat even when not exercising. When you exercise aerobically, include some interval training so you increase your heart rate to, say, 85% of max then bring it down (read up on HIIT). This will left your metabolic rate for hours afterwards. You need to burn 7,000 cals to drop 1 kg so you need to make sure the cals in really count and that your exercise pays back in the calorie burn. edited by The Original BMAP on 01/06/2013

I kinda get what you are saying but, what if a woman was left on her own, maybe her husband died. No family, nothing, is she supposed to just lie down and die herself instead of trying to get a job somewhere to put food in her mouth and maybe her children's? Are these men prepared to look after all these women so they can stay at home? My understanding (from what I've read) is that traditionally, if a woman's husband died she would then move into the home of her closest male relative and it would be his duty to care for her until her death. No woman would be allowed to live by herself. Don't quote me (I may be wrong) but I think the motivation might come from the conservatives who are fighting against the ways of the western world "diminishing" or "corrupting" traditional Saudi values. I think they are fearful that it will lead to the demise of their society.

plug those numbers into RERA's Rent Increase Calculator and it's even too much. It says rents for 2 bdrms in Springs should range from 90 - 130K. So 130K would be top of the range - lake view and presumably with upgrades and positioned up in Springs 1 or 2 - closer to SZ Rd.
