I have no persoanl experience but have heard people recommend the lexicon Reading Center. This is from their website: www.lexiconreadingcenter.org "Lexicon Reading Center provides help for children who learn differently to bridge the gap between the conventional learning methodologies and their unique learning styles to achieve their potential in their academic performance." You can call them on 050 795 4428. They are in JLT. Otherwise an Educational Psychologist might help. Dubai Community Health Centre should have staff that test for Dyslexia. 04 395 3939 HTH

She really needs to see experts who deal with this issue everyday, rather than more general othopaedic specialists who may see only 2 or 3 cases a year. The timing of the surgery is crucial, if indeed surgery is recommended. Once they straighten and fuse the spine it cannot grow, so in my nephews case they left it until he was almost 15 to operate so that he could achieve most of his growing first. The curve got really bad but now he is perfectly straight and tall. He missed out on the first 6 months of his GCSE courses but still did really well despite months in hospital. Sadly his younger brother has now been diagnosed with the same condition and is being monitored at present. The current thinking at RNOH does not seem to involve casts or braces.

Where are they from? The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London are world class. My nephew's scoliosis has been operated on there. My sister cannot speak highly enough of them.

I have recently just moved to barsha south and i am sooo happy here as its a quiet area but up coming area so there is construction going on BUT! our Landlord is an amazing Landlord and he is very polite and if you have any problems you call him straight away and within like 2 hours he will be around at the house. couldnt ask for a better landlord. There is 2 villa's owned by 2 brothers. one which i have rented and the other one is vancant at the moment. its 5 bed + maid, brand new and amazing quality finish. He wants to only rent it to europeans and the rent is 170,000 If your interested then i can give you the owner's number so then you dont have to go through a real estate. Jojo - is this the same'gorgeous 5 bedroom villa' you were promoting a month ago for 120,000? What's the story?

The radio ad said heat from 9am and finals from 6pm. I went last year. Tickets were very cheap (maybe 30 dhs). It's a great venue. The ad said to check out their facebook page but I can't remember what it was called.

Hi Have you tried the Carboholix store close to the Mall of the Emirates? It stocks quite a range of low carb and diabetic products. The number is 04 323 3055. I just googled them for their website to find the contact number for you. Look at www.carboholix.com On their website they have a maple flavoured sugar free syrup featured which is 20 dhs. I think on the flights to and from UK the transfers are easy. I flew from Dubai to Madrid return last Easter and the transfers were awful. Hours to kill in the middle of the night and I had to spend ages riding on buses round the tarmac to temporary check-in buildings. Having said that the flights were fine and almost half the price of Emirates. I guess the inconvenience was worth it!

Hi I had a friend who had to leave suddenly and then decided she wanted her house packed up. She contacted Crown Relocations, a friend met them with the key and they packed the whole house up and shipped it to her. I know she had a job finding someone who would do it as she wasn't personally here but Crown were excellent and there were no problems at all. The food etc just got left in the house as far as I know, but I am sure your maid could take care of that. HTH <em>edited by plum2 on 29/09/2011</em>

Did the police take your driving license? They took mine after a minor bump and one of the pieces of paper was to get my license back. I think I had to pay 200 dhs or something like that to get it back.

Hi Hayley We have been paying 'Those Pool Guys' 450 dhs a month for 3 x week. That has kept the pool looking good. Just before we went away for the summer we hired a gardener who comes daily for 600dhs a month. Now that it's cooling down we plan to reduce it to every other day for 300 (hopefully).

can someone pls confirm how the traffic ia allowed to flow on the roundabout now? from previous posts I gather that: 1. traffic flows normally on Emirates road towards sharjah and towards Jebel Ali/Abu Dhabi but there is no traffic light anymore 2. Right Turn from Emirtaes road to Khail Road is open 3. the bab al shams camel ride is less than 5 minutes, but you have to pay 400/ person for the dinner so not sure if this is good value. i do not really know any camel ride places, but heard big red has some, on hatta road, maybe call them. I don't mean at Al Hadheera, the desert restaurant, but if you go into the main part of the hotel and head towards the rooftop bar, they have the camels and falcons there every afternoon. They are on the sand just at the far end of the pool. It is a beautiful setting right on the edge of the desert.

You can go to Bab al Shams late afternoon and they have camels to ride and Falcons to hold etc. A sunset drink at the rooftop bar is lovely. In my experience parents may be aware that there is something not quite right with their child's speech but cannot always identify the problem. That's why I think it is worth getting a professional opinion. As parents we typically hear the message of what are children are saying, not necessarily paying attention to the way that they say it. But yes, I agree with you that therapy may not be necessary at this age. I would maybe be more pro-active with 4 year olds. 4 year olds in British Curriculum schools get into reading and writing very quickly. Children with a lisp may not make a clear difference between 's' and 'th' and therefore do not know which sound to write. <em>edited by plum2 on 20/09/2011</em>

I have a spare one for sale. I think it's a Kenwood. I have one excatly the same and use it a lot. I broke the bowl of mine. I agreed to buy one from a friend who was leaving and when I went to collect it she had a spare bowl! So now I have 2 complete ones. It is 75 dhs and in excellent condition. Where do you live and does your daughter attend nursery/School? With this info you may get more advice about where to go. Depending on the lisp, most good speech therapists should be able to give you a home programme as this is something you should be able to work on at home. Good on you for getting onto it early. It's one of those habits that parents often think is 'cute' but the longer it goes on the harder it can be to correct. Therapy sessions cost from about 360 an hour up. Some centres will do shorter sessions for younger children.

Hi If your child has had some developmental delay in other areas and Doctors have recommended seeing a speech-language therapist, then I would go ahead and do so. I do usually recommend the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre as they are an excellent not for profit centre. They run a really good Early Intervention programme once a week where you get to see an SLT, Physio and Occupational therapist altogether, who look at your child's overall development. They can then recommend individual therapies if they think it is necessary. It is very reasonable considering you get to access the three professionals. They have just put their prices up but I think the hour appointment is still only about 360 dhs. You can ring the centre on 04 340 0005. You can self-refer and leave your child's details with the receptionist or leave a message for Chris McFarlane, the senior Physio. <em>edited by plum2 on 16/09/2011</em>

I can only help with the Ranches. There the service charge is related to the size of the plot, not the house. We are in 3 bedroom on a large section and pay about 18K for the year (about 1500dhs a month I think). The community always looks well maintained, the rubbish collections are efficient and the community facilities are good lovely clean pools with lifeguard and good playgrounds). HTH

Hi Check out the Health and Fitness Forum as there are several Dukan threads there. Carrefour is great for fat free yoghurt and fromage frais. Lulu's has fat free sour cream and a fat free dairy whip (like an artificial cream) which people either love or hate! I love it mixed with natural yoghurt - it makes a creamy custard like desert. Sugar-free Jelly crystals are also great to add a little flavour to natural yoghurt. Spinneys usually has rhubarb. I found Goji berries in the Organic cafe but to be honest I wouldnt bother with them. They are v expensive and don't really add much flavour. You can find Oat Bran in quite a few supermarkets but it's best to buy it when you see it as it isn't alwasy in stock. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hi Mishmash It's not too bad at the moment as I'm staying with a great friend who is v accommodating. I have been out walking with her everyday which is great. Her husband is halfway through reading my Dukan book and is keen to try it. Xmasbaby - that's great news about the consolidation stage. I hope to be there by the time we return to Dubai at the end of August. I really find it easier to stay focussed on myself when I'm on holiday. I actually have the time to plan what I'm going to eat and to exercise regularly. I'm loving it and it doesn't feel hard at all. Fingers crossed I can stick with it.
