HI fairwater; I've had african greys my whole life (5 till this day, and all still alive and well, and 2 from before i was born, also alive and well ... only one is with me in Dubai :) ), and here's what i learned in terms of feeding... - twice a day (morning and evening) meals are good enough..with treats in between. Apples, Pomegranates and grapes go a long way as treats. I'd suggest two to three treats between meals. - no peanuts in shells, ever. Yes they love them, but there is a high chance that they will suffer serious damage to the lungs due to a bacteria that lives on the peanut shells that parrots cannot digest (or something along those lines)..our parrot suffered, and had to be operated on. Something not easy to handle. He had tubes stuck into his lungs through his chest, and chances of survival are low. They are even lower here in Dubai as there aren't enough proper vets who specialize in african greys, aside from Nad Al Sheba hospital. Peanuts without shells are allowed, but not too often. an every other day treat of 1-3 pieces is enough...once he turns 1, you can move up to daily intakes of 4-6 pieces. - a note for the future - AFrican greys eat meat - they LOVE chicken and lamb chops - you can buy chicken weiners or ham weiners in spinneys (the ones with see-through packaging and a yellow sticker)..a small piece a day is a great treat..perhaps when he's 1 years old though, not now. Same goes for chicken and lamb chops - when he's one. Most people dont know this and shy away from it, but african greys love their meat and get plenty of nutrients from it. If they could drool, that would be the one thing they drool for. Sunflower seeds are their favourites, but as mentioned below, don't overfeed on those. It should be a healthy mix of different seeds, and dried fruit and a lot of fresh fruits and veggies - google on which are recommended. Always keep water fresh..and yes, bottled water is recommended. from harrison's (parrot food brand) - no more than 4 pieces out of the RED bag per day (by red i mean red label, they have a blue label as well, and although it says the blue is for african greys, stick to the Red labelled one - as instructed by MANY vets to us) Eventually, when he's older, you can also give him dried chilly - as mentioned below, but do not buy from Sharjah market...we've had several serious problems with their food. I will check the name of a pretty awesome spanish brand that sells the best stuff and get back to you by tomorrow. They are probably the best. Another thing parrots love is those hanging treats. A stick of seeds and fruits to hang from the top of the cage. They go bonkers over that stuff. lasts barely an hour!! I would also recommend you start letting him out of the cage every once in a while. He needs to learn house rules (no biting people, no destroying furniture) as with age it'll be harder to teach him. We never fed any of our parrots the powered mix. It isnt' necessary, so when you feel he is ok with solids, you can easily remove the powered stuff. Think of it as in nature; they dont have powered mixed stuff, and easily do without it. But i do highly suggest mashing some of the veggies and spoon feeding or finger feeding for now..till about 6 months old...not only does it help with digestion, but it also provides a wonderful bonding experience for your bird. Lastly, do tell us what you named him :)

I am Russian, from Moscow, although i've never really lived there. Left when i was 2, and headed over to Switzerland. Spent my first few years between Zurich and Cairo due to dad's business, after which we all settled here...that was 21 years ago...I still say im russian even though i do not fit the stereotypical characteristics, speak english as a first language, and never even think about visiting or ever going back...but it doesn't make me any less russian imho. I consider Dubai my home...not sure if i can say that about anywhere else..last time i was in russia was 6 years ago, for a few days, and i felt so lost and out of place...but LOVE the architecture of St Petersburg, and of course, can stuff my face with russian food till it hurts! i think i relate more to the older generation rather than the new generation there...i still see the bright side in communism, enjoy the old movies, and cannot stand the plethora of nouveau riche and their behaviour :) there, my story/rant over

something else that's concerned me lately, thereby again bringing to an even brighter light the issues and problems with certain systems and charges here; DEWA visiting fees...if i have a problem with my meter and am being overcharged on my monthly bill, which is technically DEWAs fault, i have to pay them for their primary inspection visit!!! what on earth!?

if expats were given more security in terms of their status here....most people would turn a blind eye to the "top up" charges on everything....as the ladies are pointing out below, the problems UAE faces from an expat's perspective come more to light when they're against a backdrop of "any day now, you can be shipped back" and "daily updated laws and regulations that seem to get changed faster than nappies"...and of course, there is the ever lasting lack of human rights regulators

So by my reckoning, and feel free to correct me, that means all locals get AED892 worth of water free and those locals who receive social assistance will get AED2068 worth of electricity free. With surcharges at 25% for electricity and 10% for water those figures increase to AED981 and AED2585. Wish I were local as my DEWA fees with fuel surcharges and housing fees are huge:( Unfortunately, they rarely give what they say they will. Plenty of locals cannot afford air conditioning and cannot go to work for various reasons, but no-one gives a tosh unless they manage to get live on the radio and then all **** breaks loose, but why the heck would you know that? Do you listen to Arabic radio? You don't have to listen to the radio to know this...plenty of locals are open about it...and it has been slowly coming to light in english language publications. You need to listen to the radio to hear the women who phone in crying about their children not receiving health care etc. You need to listen to their voices. To truly feel it. Unfortunately i do not speak Arabic, but my father who has learnt the language often told me of stories..we once helped an Emirati woman who was suffering because she wasn't getting enough help from you know who....she might have eventually, but it was taking too long...so a few people from my dad's office pitched in and helped as much as they could....im not denying that locals are overlooked at all....in fact, considering how little of the total percentage of population they make up, it shouldn't be that hard given we have expensive high rise buildings popping up like mushrooms after a light rain...i was just saying, that this same you know who that overlooks locals, has come up with plenty of schemes for expats to fork out endless amounts of cash....and yet, as we all clearly see, its not really going where it'll at least make sense.....hence why it becomes a little more difficult to accept certain terms/additional/hidden payments..... edited by PN on 06/10/2011

I heard that Lebanese will not be able to get Trade licenses anymore, like Iranians Do you know if this is recent or to be applied soon? A friend of mine just got his trade license approved...a week ago...and he's Lebanese.... I will update when I know, but there will be exceptions to this rule, as always. Thanks in advance

I agree with Scaralex. Even though yes we are guests here, it doesn't mean we foot the bill more and more each year. We have been doing so already and understand that this is how things work here, and most of us just accept it....especially since most of us chose to be here...but if this will affect us even more, it just isn't fair any longer. What are we getting in return in this very wounded and limping economy!?!?? we are still here on very little guarantee...just that thought alone is payment enough... Noone is against following rules and policies, but they change so often here, and we are already quietly accepting to pay for so many unnecessary and ridiculous things - emiratesID anyone? proposed garbage "tax", invisible taxes, chillers (for some), abnormal DEWA fees, useless maintenance (that can't even be called that!!), constant villa/apartment problems, ridiculous fines, salik, car registration issues etc etc....seriously in some people's cases its becoming "i receive a salary only to give it back to the same person, albeit indirectly"... Let's just hope we're all jumping to conclusions and this will not affect our prices.....always good to dream eh? Quite possibly you have ran your Dubai life out. After 21 years....perhaps i have...and after all that has happened to me in the last year...i can't say i can eagerly stand up for Dubai any longer...with that said, this is the only home i have ever known, so i do have the deepest love for it...hypocritical and double sided, i know....

Well i look after my friends cats in that building, and so am always back in and out of there..so i can just say i was passing by and saw this dog bone outside your door..."do you own a dog, if so is this yours." if he says yes, i can excitedly just say "oooh can i please pet him, i just love dogs, and miss mine terribly"....err yeah, turn on that "please dont give me a ticket Mr cop" thing :-/ .. cheesy i know, but aren't men suckers for that, and hopefully he wont suspect anything...im also hoping that if he does let me see the dog, perhaps there will be some hint of abuse (of course its not good for the dog, but its definitely good enough to get that dog out of there) As for beating his wife, my little sister who was out on the walk with me as well, had said that to me too...she said "imagine you finally get teh dog out of there through municipality complaints, and all the meanwhile he's hiding his wife under the bed as she was the one he was actually beating!"...i told my sister that her humour for a nineteen year old worries me lol :-/ I could always go with "does jack live here"...and forever be known as the Joey (friends) of the building block...."hot chick? HOOT CHICK?" instead i'll be yelling for jack :-/

Hi Ladies...i have forwarded his details to municipality, but they're saying they want me to make sure the apartment im naming has a dog to begin with. So, i will go there today myself after work. i won't give away my intentions, as i have been racking my brain for a way to go there without raising alarm bells just yet. my plan involves an innocent tennis ball/dog bone which is "found" by me lying in the hallway....come to think of it, i think i have spoken to this guy once or twice during my walkies...not sure though, but im pretty sure its the guy i have seen around before...if it is, then oh boy...his dog is the sweetest most adorably quiet dog i have ever seen!!! oh well, we shall soon find out... Thanks for all your support Ladies, seriously thank you so much.

..and the saddest part is? We have constant daily patrols in Motor City handing out parking tickets to people who leave their vehicles in non-parking spots BUT still in fairly obscure areas just to quickly pop over to spinneys....or to cars who may have parked out of parking zone but still in an area thats not bothering anyone..all due to the huge lack of parking in these areas....yes it bugs me when they do that, but i think these patrols are of more use on the actual roads, pulling over idiots like the women described in your stories...yes sure, hand out the parking fines, but is it necessary to have the whole force in Motor City 24/7?!!? when just across the road in the Springs/Meadows areas we constantly hear of blithering idiots who put other people's lives in danger?! I think its not just lack of education, but the "business" approach to tickets/fines here...its all about raking in the cash from the easiest targets...but idi*ts who can't seem to fathom the repercussions of driving with your kid wildly bouncing in the front, or nearly running over pedestrians, roam free... I reckon they should focus less on parking violators and more on the army of uneducated/spoiled drivers in this city. The parking tickets outside Spinneys are issued by the security men and they're just "advisory" lol..i know because i got one the first time i parked there - i didn't know you're not supposed to !! Yeah they do that too, but haven't you noticed lately how many coppers there are? Its like a swarm of bees around honey. And for them, that little spinneys spot is like a gold mine i think...i dont see a problem with people stopping there tbh.... you should have seen the advisory tickets during the first few months when motor city was open...my god it was hilarious....they were all clearly written out by hand by the security guys themselves, and you really couldn't make out what they were advising people to do!! lol

“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true." Steve Jobs - A true inspiration. Thank you for all you did

there was a big news story on this....actually allowed to use this product and still label it fake fur or skin? since it is not a animal usually used for this purpose......in the US they now must label origin also......big names are using it...tommy , baby phat, etc..... How can a country respect animal rights- when they do not recognize human rights........? this is China..... WTH - how can that be right? fur is fur; fake is fake...... You'd be surprised just how much they get away with...and how weird their "technicality loopholes" are...a close friend of mine is in the Fur Coat business, and has told me some seriously horrifying stories...its a huge market in China...they pretty much rule the world when it comes to skins/furs and make up rules as they go along to whatever suits them

I'm too scared to open the link...but my imagination pretty much made up for that...how horrendous. I will never ever comprehend how some people can be so heartless to animals....that and why animal lives are being looked down upon as something of less importance...a life is a life regardless which shape or form it has taken IMHO I just pray that i get to live and see the day that these heinous crimes are stopped.

I think this should definitely be brought to light...parents should be made aware...aside from sitting on dirty floors, its also a serious health hazard for young kids to sit on cold floors!!! Im assuming parents are paying money for their kids to be properly looked after and not left lying around like laundry!! In my personal opinion you're definitely not overreacting, and here's to hoping that some of the parents of those kids read this thread!

I've had parrots my whole life, and currently have an african grey. For kids i wouldnt' recommend cockatoos or macaws as they tend to have quite frisky and confident personalities, and aren't afraid to put people in their place. They are wonderful birds, but again, its best they are only handled by adults, unless you have the time to properly train them to understand that with children they should behave. It is possible, but requires proper training. Another issue with Cockatoos is they sometimes develop a fine powder on their feathers, which is annoying to clean daily, and it HAS to be cleaned daily to avoid respiratory problems. African grey's are much smarter, and can easily be taught to behave around kids. But again, it requires training, and a lot of attention. These birds live off attention pretty much. The minute things start to change in the household, and its getting less attention, the bird tends to pull out its own feathers and starts looking like a half plucked chicken :) Wonderful birds, but again, its a very time consuming commitment. You have to understand that unlike dogs, birds are individualists, and refuse to compromise on quality of lifestyle. They should be frequently let out of their cages, and allowed to roam around. Everyday i spend at least one hour just with my bird, to show him that even though i have two dogs and a cat, he still is just as important as the rest otherwise he'll start getting very very VERY annoying. Another thing to be careful with, is once a parrot picks up an annoying sound (and they LOVE to do that), it can sometimes do your head in with this sound.....constantly! Food wise they eat everything and anything, but you have to be careful with certain things as they are susceptible to diseases if not fed properly. For example not many people know the dangers of giving a parrot a peanut thats still in its shell....the parrot will LOVe it, but will eventually develop a serious problem in the lungs which is hard to operate on. Anyway, this may sound very grim, but its just a warning on how much attention these birds require. A parrot is sometimes a lot more difficult than having a dog or a cat...they also tend to understand a whole lot more, and from my experience are a lot smarter than cats and dogs, therefore require a lot more attention in certain cases. If you have the time, and are willing to put in the effort your kids will absolutely love these birds as pets. And again, be prepared for a lot of dusting and cleaning /hth

As for water, i had noticed that it helped a lot since i partook in a strict regime of daily water intake, which for me previously was very difficult as water makes me sick in the stomach :-/

Was told by many doctors it might have affect on my heart, which is perfectly healthy but weaker than in most people, and removing tonsils somehow (wasn't paying attention when the explained in detail) weaken the heart even further, so i was told to avoid the procedure by several docs..otherwise, no fear of mine would keep me away from ridding myself of them...its so irritating!

I never keep the dirham either. Those dirhams do add up and I know I'd like to have the option to keep it or not. if the trolly storage was closer I might be more inclined to put the cart away and get that dirham back. So, because of my laziness I really do hope that the right guy is getting my dirham. I actually never get the offer to help with the groceries or take the cart and I shop at MoE too! Perhaps this has been covered already, I really don't know, but it is along the same lines as one of the previous posters mentioned. Our gardener asks us for water every other day. I give him a bottle of water and some nice cookies I buy for him,it's the least I can do. I'd do it at home too. The other day I overheard three women I respect talk about what an imposition it was to give the gardener water. I was really shocked and disappinted. 2 days ago our gardener brought some flowers to my yard..."free of charge, I boss that this is for MY MAAM and she is nice to me". I've been smiling for days. Karma is a good thing! By the way....did my pruning of 20 trees today in the yard. Sweat like I've never sweat, my back is aching so I did 15, took a break then did the rest after. I have nothing but compassion for these guys busting their backs and in this heat! Like and greatly admire :)

Anyone else here a sufferer? Having them removed isn't an option for me, and was wondering if anyone else suffering from the same can recommend any good medicine/techniques. The medicine i use now, seems to have very little affect on me after 3 years of using it. Aside from gargles, and the occasional antibiotics, what else can i do? I'm tired from the lack of effect my medicine has on me now, and if i have to be hooked up to another IV drip i may just rip my tonsils out myself. I have a horrid fear of hospitals/needles etc, i just can't take it anymore, and popping antibiotics just seems too harsh as my body goes through the worst to recover after each antibiotic session. So any other advice/medicinal recommendations would help. The damage heavy medicine (antibiotics) has done to me over the years is catching up with me :(

I don't think the woman realizes that there are implications on her children from this trail of thought. My mother stopped working after the birth of my sister, and has never went back. It kills my sister and I to now see her so sad so often. She is always feeling like she didnt do enough in life, and very often feels incomplete as a person. Both my sister and i are grown up women, leading our own lives, and although are mother is always with us, it literally eats away at my heart to see her regret the many things she didnt try in life because she was a stay at home dedicated mom. In a way it has even affected myself and my sister to be more aggressive and pursuant in life with things other than mother-hood, just because we don't want to one day feel we missed something or didn't do everything we could in life. I really honestly hope that this will never be the case for Desert Roses children. Regardless of her weird views, its the children's soulful health that worry me with these beliefs. Nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom, but adding those kinds of beliefs to the household is just not right.

As this is such a gut wrenching, sickening story, I would like to point out one amazing thing. Believers or not, God allowed Mickey to survive, to make it back home, gave the surgeon the skills to save him I think all in order to show what it really happening out there. To be able to photograph Mickey, and thereby legitimizing the attack for police and public alike to witness, should no doubt alert everyone about such brutal behavior in our neighborhoods. As the post title describes - WARNING! Thanks to Mickey, he has probably saved many cats as their owners may now be more aware of the dangers (I had no clue this existed) and perhaps keep them in doors to spare their lives. Thanks Mickey - we are praying for you! Wonderfully put!

Poor cat..my prayers go out to little Mickey...im a strong believer in "an eye for an eye will make the world blind" but in this case, i move away from that belief and gladly would take on the risk of turning blind. I feel seriously sorry for what animals have to put up with because of human stupidity edited because apparently i need a dictionary when sleepy :-/ edited by PN on 02/10/2011

Hi emur..ok so in terms of pools, i dont know much about Layal, and my friend's not here at the moment, but in motor city, we have quite a few pools..pretty much a pool per 4 buildings or so...they're not as chilled, but its done very well. nice chaise longs, lifeguards on duty from morning till evening, pretty clean bathrooms/gyms...obviously not a-la-hotel style, but still quite nice...each pool area has plenty of good shade area as well...i have to also mention, the pool areas are pleasantly gated...overall very well done i reckon...even in comparison to some more expensive compounds...they are rarely closed, and if they are, you have options pretty close by...as i said, there are a lot of pools and most buildings have the option of using at least two that are of the same distance from the actual building...they aren't small, nor are they large..i'd say they are on the slightly smaller side of medium..BUT again, it depends what youre used to..perhaps my version of pool sizes isnt' the same as your assessment of the same as for travel time..it takes me ten-fifteen minutes to get to MOE..again, depending on traffic and routes chosen..to madinat (which is on jumeirah road) it takes me approx the same time...perhaps plus an extra 3-5 mins...so i think its safe to assume it'd take you approx 20-30 minutes to get to centre of wasl/jumeirah...this is including traffic light stops. hope i haven't made too many typos and my sentences are clear enough..i was rushing :) let me know if you have any other questions

 thanks ladies .. i really just couldnt' contain myself..they stood there just staring at me waiting for ME to figure out a way to de-sandwich myself from the two massive steel structures!! as if to notion that i had been wasting THEIR time by getting stuck. grrrr..funny enough though, this happened AFTER i read the thread on here..while i was standing there, all i could think of, (aside from slapping the four weirdos), was this thread! Anyway, again, hope the rudeness in this city doesn't affect everyone too much...especially mums with little ones or expecting mums...its such a stressful thing to experience rudeness here although i have to say, when i went to visit my hometown (Moscow) for the first time, Dubai in comparison was the nicest city ever...Dubai doesn't come close to Moscow's insensitivity in certain places..especially in service sectors...and you can't tell anyone off or complain like you can here..i guess its what keeps me relatively quiet during rude moments

Had an elevator related issue happen to me today, and it was the first time i actually rudely spoke out to someone i dont know..guess im in one of those scary moods today :) Was waiting for a lift with four other guys...office building where i work...and as the doors opened, everyone started running in without a care in the world for the elderly couple trying to come out of the elevator...anyway, once the order was established and they let the couple out, they again started to pack in like sardines into a can, and the last guy who was right in front of me (yes thats right the men had no clue that its best to let a lady with two laptops and a huge briefcase enter first), decided he wanted to stand out and slowly WALTZ into the elevator...by the time he got in, the doors were starting to shut, and of course as i was making my way into the lift, the doors started to shut, slamming me and my bags into a sandwich (old elevator and the doors are not fitted with sensors)...the four just stood there like a bunch of clueless id*ots...not a clue what the "door open" button does....so there i stood, wedged in...and in a split second i just got so angry i yelled at the mor*n who was so slow "cannot believe your mother refused to teach you any bl*ody manners! please press the button to open the door!! im a woman carrying three heavy bags, it should be common sense to hold the door for me or at least walk fast enough to consider the person behind you needs to make it inside as well!!!" ugh..they just stood there in silence...of course i felt horribly awkward right after as im usually a very quiet person when it comes to these things...oh well..still can't shake the feeling of all this anger.

dipika, i had the same thing offered to me a while back, and frankly i didnt buy it. They bugged me till i was blue in the face with that offer..i suggest you call the proper authorities and double check this though.as far as ive heard its not really allowed here..their only excuse may be that they help re-write the CV hence the charges..but hiding potential employers, sounds a bit dodgy to me.

ooh must mention, on the way to motor city/layan, if using umm suqeim road during working days, between 5-6 there is a bit of traffic..but its fair to say its nothing too infuriating in comparison to some other parts of town during rush hour.

Emur, i live in motor city and a friend of mine lives in Layan..from what i gather, motor city seems to be preferential. In terms of travel there are no issues...i normally cab everywhere, and from motor city to gold souq in deira (other end of town) it would run you 76-82 dhs depending on traffic and route...so to jumeirah/al wasl, im guessing it'd be in the range of 40-50 depending where you want to get to...to madinat from motor city i pay 28dhs using umm suqeim road. there are usually no issues with getting in or out, and the only times ive ever hit traffic is during an accident, and even then, its relatively easy to get in and out. if you prefer villas, i''d say go with Layan, otherwise motor city has fairly good layouts, and most apartments are large...the neighborhoud is very friendly, there are plenty of coffee shops, pet stores, a large spinneys, le marche right across in arabian ranches...and then some...basically its a bit more lively in motor city..feels more like a community...Layan is nice, but quiet, and as mentioned by Sabrina H, it has its issues in terms of developer delivery

CABear, i just want to wish you all the best :) i really hope that you don't run in to these types of people anymore...even though there are oh so many here. Good luck to you, and let's hope no more idiots unnecessarily raise your stress levels.
