We do plan to get our cat over in next two three months we have been here 9 weeks and only just getting our shipment, getting kids settled into their 2nd new school and just eating a car etc...so would like to have life a bit more normal before we flight her over and it will be cooler by then We skype with her very often lol Except she isn't too impressed by my dad following her around with a laptop ;) Miss her tonnes No child or person could convince my husband He doesn't like emotionally attaching himself and takes it very hard So leaving misty behind (even though he never wanted her in the first place and we had to keep her in the garage as a 8 week old kitty while he thought about returning her ) has been hard on him although he never says it And even though we really want to bring her over...I do wonder how she would cope with the lack of greenery and the territory play with the wild cats here... The compound regular removes them but I would hate for my cat to get into a fight with one and then removing these already homeless kitties :( Also right now at my moms place she is in a wood reserve so she has the entire jungle of trees and its wildlife at her disposal In fact mom says she has a kangaroo friend who she meets up with every evening and they just play a game of 'let's stare at each other' or 'follow me somewhere new' ONce she went on a walk so long with the kangaroo apparently she either lost her way or lost track of time and didn't come home till sunrise. Needless to say she has been smarter mom says and stays closer to home with the kangaroo doing most of the visiting Anyway enough over here Maybe I will bring my kids over to play with your kitty :) I know they deep rate,y miss their ball of fur And literally beg their dad to take home every kitten or cat we see Hoping army sleeps in a warm bed tonight :) good for her being brave !!

Grat work Roosha convincing your husband We see many baby and even adult kittens and my kids are desperate to have a cat as they kiss ours terribly she is relaxing at moms home back in Oz but my husband won't hear of it...he had just gotten used to having her around the house And now he cannot bear to feel attached to another animal so will not even consider it a teeny ounce :( But what do u plan to do if u leave Doha? That's my concern? But I if u have been here 7 years u are here for the long haul?

Hi Roosha Yes Rachel is correct as they are a grade behind in American or Australian and international system -number wise Meaning that year 2 in UK system is grade 1 in the others But the content is and shd be the same My 2nd son too missed out by 5 days in Australai) exactly which was quite annoying however since he went to a Montessori kindly in Australia they worked one on one with him and he was doing double digit math and spelling words hat the rest of the kids were learning in their first year of school and maybe even more...so when he gets here at 6 years of age he gets bumped two years ahead into grade 2 in NBS but he had to tink a little but was doing fine. And now in An american school is back in grade 1 -- but also doing the same work.. And with my 7 year old I have bumped him to grade 3 in This school as he would be way too bored in grade 2 and he only reason he would have of be in grade 2 would be due to the fact he was a November baby as opposed to their cut off being end September...some,times these rings make u laugh Also it's not really grade levels that matter ( but he is academically very bright and we have teachers reports etc that justify that ...plus the schools do an assessment int he first week so they know exactly where children should be placed) although here jut to get a decent school that nurtures and provides a safe place for your kids to go and grow should be considered quite lucky But look for schools which differentiate So they stay with their age groups and enjoy the same activities but work on higher or lower levels as needed in their groups and for homework on the same topics in classes And judging by the way the teachers have spoken to me...I am looking forward to see what they will be doing with the children Again as I mentioned before all this was available to my children in a public school... DBS is no longer a Montessori school it used to be a very very long time ago DC is not Uk passport preferred unless they are secretly doing so...but this is absolutely the first time I have heard of this and I talk to hundreds of ppl about schools But dess definitely is Having said that I was somewhere on QL that this person knew two ppl of non UK origin or passport who got into DESS this year...but whether that's cos they r in much higher classes where the demand isn't that high...I don't know Anyway hope that helps And I completely understand the frustration u have...but find yourself a good kindy/or preschool or whatever they call it here and IF he has an interest they will nurture it so that when he does start school with the right system...he should just keep building :) But don't stress too much...he is only very little :) edited by Raahatd on 01/10/2012

Hi Roosha Where do u hail from? All the schools u mentioned are great...depending on fees being covered by your company We have had to move them AcS and are happy as they have an IB based system but twice the fees of DC or DBS ISL is excellent and established in their IB program and really wishing w head heard about it when we were offered the job in May Funny thing is my kids had all this and MORE in their public school in Australia Granted that school was one of kind and it took me six months to find...then we land in the Courtney with the worst nightmare for schools lol Anyway good luck and do let us know how u go edited by Raahatd on 30/09/2012

Hi RachelA Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Ikea will not be opening in Dec. The date has been put back although no official date as yet, my husband told me on Sunday as he is working with someone who is constructing the road to it. edited by marvelteam on 19/09/2012 Ducking for cover as I add to this I noticed last week that we actually live 2 min up the road from the new Ikea and I would say give it at least 6 months ..or more.... Even the blue sheeting on the walls is still being constructed let alone the inside construction and then the fit outs ... And we all know how big IKEAs are .. So I am gonna say ...please don't hold your breath.. Go buy whatever u need some where else -- this is a long way away Sorry :(

Hi rumers Exactly my dilemma four weeks ago... Asked many ppl and couple of reminds personally recommended ' the British lady'at glow west bay ( had read few negative comments about glow so these personal recommendations were good) Nd also another lady on QL recommended her loiuse She is very good And charged about 445 for both (roots touch up) she said don't bother coloring your hole hair even though it's betweeen more than 3 months since a last visit in Australia ... she could have if she wanted to make more money but she didn't And very happy Highly recommended :)

Thanks shopgirl Yes they do love to kayak - sorry to keep hassling u but this hire place .. Is it far from the actual kayaking area? Would we have to take them tied to SuVs? With this Internet on phone can't search properly .. We r from Australia and where we lived on the Gold Coast u could hire kayaks and the kids loved their little one person kayak And they just sat in one one day and took off .. Lol I learnt how easy it was from them! Still don't know what we r doing here leaving all that amazing stuff behind But my most unadventuroius DH decided that this trip was one adventure he wanted to try And yes my litle one loved getting little fishies with a net from the lake near our place in Oz so that's why I said he would be excited Where would I get those little hand net though? In C4? Where r u from and kids ages? Thanks again!

Yes definately keep driving around Agents r mostly expensive but only show u places which r available which mostly r not really nice ones or overpriced And even if u ask abouthe ones u really want (by reading on google, QL etc) they won't keep calling property management all the time So it's best u drive around That's how we found our compound too And if u have your GpS/ maps app on iPhone on satellite it gives u zoomed in of compounds while driving near the areas so u can see size of compound, pool etc Again that's what I saw and really liked but u have to harrass them literally evey two days.. Coz the good ones - even if u managements numbers r very very hard to get into Like I said - nightmare second to schools - good luck again!

Hi there We r in same pickle with schools as u r - moved here from Australia 8 weeks ago and no closer... And second to that comes the nightmare of finding a good villa which we got on break lease by absolute miracle We r in gharafa right near lulu and landmark and alsonear the two new gigantic malls But depending on schools we will have a 20- 40 min drive We don't have what u would call amazi g resort facilities But we have a really nice lagoon pool which is why I love this place and a very warm bungalowish villa which u won't find at Y Village or Al Jazi either and oh yes there is a good gym and a supermarket which stocks everything in the world And a 24 hour cafe But it is 3 beds up with an extra living space And study down And also an outside maids room If u want to know the details I can msg I know villas here hard to come by only 11k and 1.5 years old The downside is that u have to buy all appliances (but is ducted) But we calculated at 8000 for all white goods we have paid them off in two months as opposed to a 15000 villa So it's up to u The compound is called Al Wadi 3. Right off shamal rd and Doha expressway so easy commute lol I shd get a commission for this ;) My boys r 6 and 7 and three quarters We Are still deciding bt Loydence and NBS And Loydence seems to be the winning more right now..

Hi guys sherbourne is a no go with grade 2 - absolutely no spaces even tried yesterday unless u want to wait till very last minute :( You could try newton LAGOON but I applied got spaces but still waiting on better opp He lagoon campus is new and great facilities Try also NEwton BRITISH near al waab which is seemingly managed diffenrtly to other newton schools Although we r getting no luck There either Acs is full for grade 2 but their grade apparently is grade 3 for British systems I have no idea how it works We are from Australia and that's a mix of both!! These are updates as of yesterday Good luck u guys and us too -- bumped into a lady with little boy in C4 yesterday was going to ask about lunch boxes and she asked which school my kids were going to ... Of course I said I had no idea... She just looked at me .. Touched my arm and said softly.. Oh u poor thing how horrible -- lol as if there had been a tragedy in the family That's what it's like though isnt it here.. Wait lists aside if anyone can give current opinions about Doha British school would really appreciate it..

Hi everyone I must be so clueless! In all my nightmarish hunt for schools for the kids.. I have just realized that compass has a campus in madina khalifa Gharafa and al rayyan Can someone pls tell me if the fees differ ? As I know compass itself is about 70 per year Way out of our budget But what about these other campuses? I know about the new al khor campus which is about 30 per year but I don't like the feel of that campus Pls desperately needing feedback re fees and quality of the al rayyan and gharafa campus (I am assuming the madina khalifa is the main campus with the 70 fees?) Many many thanks

Mrsw :( sending supporting wishes your way Anyway email me it would be nice to have a chat We r looking at the same schools just like everyone in Doha or planning to move to Doha lol Picklz I did read your info re Sherborne issues previously We actually got a place in sherborne for our 7 year old But the torture of going thru the speed umps and congestion to end of town plus additional fees on top of allowance ... And waiting to to hear about the 6 year old not too Meanwhile Everyone - meaning not locals - that I have spoken to about newton Britsh in al waab and newton lagoon say they like it But of course they aren't in DC or DBD parkhouse etc But they are adamant completely diff from other newton schools So can only try Not like we have much of choice here Intially anyway Kitsune I would put my kids in acs in a heart beat but it's literally double company's llowance so that would make a huge impact on our income ... Which I am so stressed I would do but lol my husband thinks its cheaper to send us home ;) On the side-- could anyone recommend good doctors? I have recently had an extremely bad case of thyroid which was under treatment in Australia but need to follow up as I have bee. Sick for a few days now whether its just exhaustion or my thyroids I would much appreciate feedback on doctors! Many many thks eveyone! edited by Raahatd on 08/08/2012

Hi Mrsw2 its very stressful this whoe school business we actually need to set up a moms support group i think I have gone to see Loydence Academy and it is a nice school the al azizya and yes they correspond better than other schoos who r stretched to the max however it is mainly arab students - not sure if the younger classes will have a bigger mix as ppl struggle to find schools again my cocnern is per below... and the biggest thing for me i cant chg my childrens school yet again (as ppl do here once a place comes available) for the 4th time in such a short life of their school - i have had to chg 3 times for my 7 year old...in australia due to bullying and lack of stimulation and finally did find the prfect school in Jan - but life takes u where it takes u yet this school issue seems to be a never ending nightmare for me will keep u posted any advice from others much appreciated...

My husband residency permit got approved and we will be cmong with him in 10 days but on a tourist visa...and as u said the process of him applying for us will require at least 6 months bank statements ...how does this effect my cat? Can she come on a tourist visa as well? I can't keep her hom for six months... :( 2. Does that the fact that we are eon a tourist visa...will that cause problems for our kids gaining entry into a school...waiting lists aside at the moment Thanks again for your advice guys

With no hope of getting into a school.... I am curious about the most trivial aspect of our upcoming move to Doha What do children take for lunch to school? Do they even have lunch or do they pome home and have lunch . Do they just have a morning tea? So then what kid on lunch boxes would they have..just a simple small lunch box with fruit etc? And a water bottle Do they have refrigeration And microwaves to warm. Up food? Or ,do. Children just eat in canteens / cafeterias Thanks guys

They come on sale sometime,s really cheap nec stuff with beading and embroidery for about $70-$100 and I wonder If those prints and designs would be available there at those prices or pricier? Might have to wait for Ike's but if the rest ofndoha is also waiting then there will short supply and not a good fighting for items lol Thanks so much ali68 for all the info on the white goods I am hoping and have seen many places for rent with them included at the least so there is that start I am hoping to give Kiwispiers idea shot at second hand good quality furniture So when they advertise furnished places do they usually not have the right pics coz a lot of them do look ok But eithe roption will first completely depend on schools for kids and whee I get them in then trying to find a mound close to hat school and then the items to fill it with... Ali68 when u said u left your pets home...did they get adopted into nice homes or... I just can't bear to that to my kitty She comes for walks with us, goes to ppls houses loves driving in the car, in fact if she wore a leash I could actually take her to the beach or park etc but coz she used to being so independent and walks by herself next to us...every time I try to up a leash on her she becomes a statue and refuses to budge But even if we were to adopt cats there at some point we have to return home which would then again mean working out what to do with the animal we adopted in Qatar...back to square one If there are millions of homeless cats does that mean that cats who are pets would get into fights with these ones? I know one month is not a of time to find anything but at least we can extend the accommodation they provide till we sort out school and our home then move to where we need Wish us luck we will be be heading your way soon...

Light blankets check Choccies check Thks for the baking wrap idea - need that all the time Looks like we will be cong by end of June with DH rather than abut later so hoping that will not go crazy with two little boys in summer heat there But also am super stressed about schools and at least if I am there I know I can physically get to those schools They don't even answer th phones anymore and that's so frustrating But I can go to another thread to vent I don't need to do it here :) Which al fardaan development r u in ausgirl? The only ones I can see for rent a alfardaan gardens and v village or 5? I agree with your idea of gardening...I do the same here on the gold coast too get someone else to the digging for me ;) Which do you recommend? Also it will be a deciding factor which school they get in and if we need to pay a lot in addition to the allowance provided Might end up in a cardboard box next tithe school itself Thank you guys so much really appreciate this Can I pvt MSG ppl? And can I chg my Username? I would like to use something other than my real name or is it too late? Would love to meet you all once I land and get things sorted Scary but exciting
