Animee, try not too worry about it too much. For some boys it just takes longer for them to stay dry at night. My eldest DS didn't have any problems from age 4 onwards, my second DS kept wetting his bed at night up till 7. I got him an alarm with the special underpants that would set off the alarm, and it came with a complete training programme. I'm not sure where to get that here, as I did it when we were still back home. The problem lies in the fact that they do not properly wake up when their bladder sends the signal "full, need to pee". It takes a lot of training. I can't remember all the exact details anymore, but a few important things: - do not take them up at night, as that will only worsen it; they are not awake when they pee, so they will still do it unconsciously, same as they do when bed wetting. - it shouldn't really matter if they have a drink before bed or not: their brain just doesn't get the bladder-full signal when they are asleep - do not get angry with them when they wetted their bed... - start training them to wake up before they need to pee....before they go to sleep, agree on 5 code words which are easy to remember for them. It could be names of friends, favourite animals etc. Change these code words every week. Make sure they remember the code words before they go to sleep. Wake them up before you go to bed, ask for the code words so he is much more awake...then take him to to the toilet and tell him he is at the toilet and he needs to pee. If they make a mistake at night and wet their bed, make them help clean it up but don't be angry or say anything about it being wrong. It will take a lot of time, a lot of effort and unfortunately sometimes a lot of frustration, but don't let your little boy see the frustration, as it is not on purpose. Make a reward chart...for every 5 dry nights get him a little something (sticker or whatever is an appropriate reward for you), wet nights are just to be ignored. Eventually (but it can take months!) you'll see longer periods of dry nights. I think we even had a grading reward chart; completely dry was 2 stickers, small drips 1 sticker...as they don't start off being completely dry nights.. The goal is also not really staying dry, but being able to wake up when they need to pee. It is also really helpful if they are not too tired before going to bed, as that will make it harder for them to wake up. Make sure you have the same routine, same bedtime every night as it helps to have set times for this. I remember my DS blissfully sleeping through the alarm, which made such a noise it woke everyone else in the house but him...as he was such a deep sleeper. Good luck and praise your little one as much as you can when he manages to stay a bit drier than before :)

It might be Impetigo (vulgaris)...my ki had it back home one, when they swam in a pool filled with water from a trench (or how do you call it). It's very contagious, and my kids had big blisters on their legs which didn't go away....and then they would turn into big lesions. Only a few tubes of Bactroban antibacterial cream helped, but it took a very long time to heal. They call it 'krentenbaard' in Dutch, found a link on Wikipedia: [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impetigo'>link[/url'>

Oh, didn't realise it came from the roof one...presumed it was the water heater above one of the ceilings indoors :\: Not sure of the roof one, sorry. But just give one of the maintenance companies a call. I'm sure they all have an emergency number. Tell your DH to be careful on the roof in the dark!!

Oh dear.... Good thing if it's the water tank...once it's empty, there will be no more water coming through your ceiling. But when it started raining in my kitchen, I've called Tool Time (as our landlord has maintenance contract with them). Tool time can be reached on 800-88 You can always try them or Hitches & Glitches, or Jim will fix it (sorry, no numbers) Hope you get it sorted soon

I can def. recommend Arabian Nights. We've done a few tours with them, and each driver we had, was great. Camp is good, food is good (from BBQ). I've always paid Dhs 180 per adult, and children (I think) Dhs120 (or 100, not sure anymore). They also have vouchers in the entertainer book, but as we had used them a few times before, I just asked if they could give me the price above instead of using vouchers. I have also done a desert safari with Desert Adventures (not sure about company name, might be desert rangers ? They also had vouchers in the entertainer in 2009....long time ago). But I wasn't too impressed with the driver we had....felt a bit unsafe while dune bashing. But then again, that is nearly 3 years ago, so not the most recent experience.

We're in a 6 bed in the Ranches; during winter months average Dewa is about Dhs1600, summer months can be anywhere between Dhs4000-6000! Even when we were in Alvorda 4-bed, summer bills would be Dhs3500-4000. Have to admit that Alvorada one had a lot of grass, whole plot was grass :( (2 yrs ago, so am guessing it would be higher now anyway, as Dewa prices have gone up over the last 2 yrs). HTH

I can only speak from my experience with Dutch, deaf people....every spoken language, as far as I know, has a equivalent in sign language. But, having been at a European conference about sign language etc. I have seen first hand that, even though sign language differ depending on which country/language the speakers originate from, deaf people are pretty good in communicating with each other. I am, however, not sure about Arabic sign language....I have never seen any deaf people around (even though I still pay attention as sign language really intrigues me ;) ). But i do think that they will be able to communicate, based on what I have seen in Europe. But being able to lip-read while having Arabic as first language....it depends if they understand English. Can the person read English?

Am using ThosePoolGuys....and they're doing a great job :) They always clean the pool on the days agreed on, if they put the hose in to fill up the pool, they'll come back to turn it off again. Last time we had a problem with our pump. They'll check what the problem is, gave me a quotation and fixed it after I agreed. And my pool has never been this clear ever....and doesn't smell of chloride like it did before with the other pool company :) [url=http://www.thosepoolguys.com/html/home.htm'>link[/url'>

Texel, one of the 5 Dutch (small, small, small) islands is very nice to stay as well. Loads of beach there, lots to do. Are you planning on renting a car or taking public transport? To get to Texel with public transport takes a bit of time. You'll cross on a ferry for which you have to make a reservation as it can be very busy during summer months. Have a look at booking.com for holiday apartments in Texel. Link will give you more info on Texel and all activities and possibilities there: [url=http://www.texel.net/en/?gclid=CLX3mZzbqa8CFWwntAod2yRkXA'>link[/url'> The Hague is very nice too, for the beach you need to be in Scheveningen which is attached to the Hague. For another lovely coastal village....google Egmond aan Zee or Bergen N.H. Both villages are in the north of Holland, quite close to Alkmaar which is a very nice city to visit. Egmond aan Zee is located very near to the beach, Bergen is a bit further from the sea. You can stay in Bergen aan Zee to be really close to the beach, but I do find that particular village a bit dull and not much to do. Websites for Egmond aan Zee en Bergen N.H. I went I holland on a school trip when I was about 7 and I have ever forgotten keukenhof - it was the most beautiful place with all the tulips! We Los went o a theme park which was magical and I have never been able to remember the ame muurtjie can you tell e what it is and where it is please - it was very Hans christen Anderson! It had giants and dwarfs and I loved every minute there it's somewhere I'd love to go back to now i have children of my own who are a similar age to the age I was when I went there. Re Paris - don't miss out the Eiffel tower my kids loved it up there. We also sat in the park outside and had a lovely picnic and took some amazing pictures of the kids with the Eiffel owner right behind them. Friends of ours last year hired a motor home and had the holiday of a lifetime travelling around Europe. They took their 3 small kds and the photos show just how amazing it was so maybe an idea to consider. It was amazing at how much they managed to cram into 2 weeks! Clairehdp....you mean the Efteling :) with its Fairy Tale Forest :) We still go every year at least once to visit when we're back home. Although my DS's are getting a bit too old for the Fairy Tale Forest, and even my 8 yr old DD now opts mostly for the rides etc. Luckily there's still some younger nieces and nephews that I can take with me as an excuse to visit the Forest

Hi Sally, I have à son in yr. 9 Wellington International School...we just had a few information sessions about options for GCSE and IB. Next academic year students at Wellington will have the BTEC option offered..I think they can either choose a BTEC PE, Business Studies or sth else (can't remember 3rd option). They will have the opportunity to do a level 2 BTEC in yr. 10&11, and then the option to go on for a level 3 BTEC in yrs. 12&13. Am not sure if they will offer the BTEC option for 6th form next academic year, but maybe worth a call?

I've done the day trip to Musandam (Khasab) à few times with visitors. You do have to leave early, but it is a fairly straight forward drive. The trips we've done leave @ 9am from Khasab. We leave the Ranches at 5.30/5.45am...reach the border crossing with Oman between 7-7.30 which gave us plenty of time to fill in forms for Omani visit visas. The day is really relaxing, which makes up for the early morning  We went 2 weeks ago, and we' were home by 7pm....just in time to go out for dinner :) The company we have used last time is Khasab Travel and Tours. If you google them, they'll be the first ones to come up in the search. They also have a Dubai office. *edited to add company info* <em>edited by Rotetho on 05/03/2012</em>

We've changed recently to Those Pool Guys...and are very happy with them. Pool has never looked as clean and clear as now, they actually mensure chemicals. Our previous pool company, which we inherited from previous tenants, just chucked in chloride and whatever, without ever testing water quality :\: They haven't had to do any electrical work yet, but do seem very knowledgeable. @Tigerlily...we must have same landlord. Ours just did the same, send us an email that we can stay in the villa form our 3rd year, but we have to pay him 50,000Dhs more in rent, or he will move in himself. I know for a fact he doesnt want to move in as he's rented the villa for the past 4 yrs ( his wife doesn't want to Move in as she feels it is too big for the 2 of them (6 bedrooms) :\: ) My DH sent him an email in return that according to Rera he cannot raise the rent by 17%, so we are happy to rent another year for the same rental price (according to rent calculator he cannot raise at all), but that he is very welcome to move in himself. In the meantime, we will not allow any real estate agents in the house, as he will be moving in and he doesn't need to show it to anyone in that case. We've also informed him that if he decides to move in, which causes us to vacate the house, he cannot rent it out for another 2 years (which is what real estate agent told us). I think he might even be fined if he kicks us out claiming he'll move in, and then rents it out....?? Surprisingly we haven't heard back from him yet....but we still have until end of May. But some of these LL are reall ****

Hi Slaon, I recently took my 8 yr old DD to Kerstin Elliot at Dubai Clinic for Physiotherapy and Family Medicine at Town Centre (the one where Cafe Ceramique is as well) on Beach road. My DD has very flat feet and she did a scan and then gave her insoles for her shoes (and told her not to wear flip-flops any more). I've seen others recommend someone (Michele?) from Dubai Podiatry, but their website was down when I was looking for someone. But Kerstin was lovely and my DD really liked her :)

Hi Chardfan, I can't offer any advice, but my sister has a son with Asperger. He's only been diagnosed a little over a year ago, and he is now 13 yrs old. But maybe you have some questions that she can answer for you as a mum? She is not in Dubai, but back home, but I can always email her your questions. From what I can understand from her about her son...he takes everything very literally, and doesn't have the empathy that we feel towards other people. I.e. he had a boy in school which he found smelly. He warned him a few times to stay away from him as he stinked (and he did say it that way to the boy), otherwise he would kick him. The boy obviously found it very amusing and kept getting near to my nephew. Eventually my nephew couldn't control his feelings anymore and just kicked him. Afterwards, when he was punished by a teacher and she asked why he did kick him, he simply replied that he HAD warned him a few times. In another instance he went to see doctor because of an infected toe. Dr said he had to soak his toe in a disinfecting bath, but forgot to mention that it only had to be twice a day for a few minutes. So my nephew asked his mother afterwards how he was supposed to sleep with his toe soaking in a tub of water? My sister had to reassess some of the things she used to do, or the way to discipline him. But also practical solutions: he kept loosing his key to his bike in school. So she sewed a really big, red keychain into his school bag for him to put his key on. That worked....hasn't lost it since. Or give his school books all a differ colour, so he knows which ones to take in the morning as his subjects on his schedule had the same colour. Organisation is apparently very difficult for him. HTH :)

What about making it into a necklace instead? You can put more charms on a necklace. That said..my mum gave me her charm bracelet, and there must be at least 50 charms on, all with their own memories :) I don't wear it that often, as the chain has become a bit weak, but do get it out every so often and it feels really, really special when I do put it on :)

After 7 yrs of stuggling with this, my DD is finally without medicine. We had to avoid loads of food products: NO pasta (only wheat), NO apple juice at all! No carrots, no weak tea, however, she did eat BROWN bread with loads of fibres. Lots and lots of water is very important. She now starts her day with a glass of fresh orange juice, and I put her on the toilet every night at the same time (before bed) to create a habit. She still won't go anywhere else, so after a sleepover at a friend's house, it is always a bit harder as she skipped a day. But to be honest, the root of the problem wasn't food, but her being scared of going. As a very young toddler, she got constipated once and that caused her to associate going to toilet with pain. It took us nearly 7 years to get over this....been to hospital to get her an enema after 2 weeks of not pooing! She now finally understands that if she goes regularly (once every 2 days mostly) it will not hurt. But she can be on the toilet for up to 20 minutes as it still is difficult. Hope you'll find a way of dealing with this as it can be soooo disheartening.

I've stored the last four years of digital pictures on 2 external hard disks. 1 disk I left with my mum back home, 1 disk I have here. I do think Picasa stores your pictures, as when I go to my online albums that I share with my family back home, I still have pics on there that I uploaded 3 years ago. But if you loose your pics on your computer and then download them again from Picase, quality gets worse, so might not be nice to print them off :( Best way, I think, is to put everything on an external hard disk. Spoke to a friend who said not to burn them onto a DVD or CD as quality becomes less after years, so might loose them that way (I stand to be corrected on this, as I fail to understand how that can happen, but him being a comp.whiz I followed his advice :\: ) About organising them: I've put all pictures of a particular year in one map, labelled with year,. Within that year I've got different maps again which I labelled with the subject, i.e. kids birthdays, holiday, Christmas etc. Took me quite some time to organise it all, but it's now really easy to find specific pics :) <em>edited by Rotetho on 28/12/2011</em>

Hi Purple, being an auntie to a very severely allergic girl (nuts, esp walnuts and beef!) I know how hard it is to live with such a life-threatening allergy. She is now 11 yrs old, which makes it a little bit easier as she herself is very much aware of what she can and cannot touch or eat. Unfortunately, the allergies develop and she has more food products that she can't have anymore. Even though our school is supposed to be nut-free, many people ignore that and give their children a sandwich with Nutella to school. When speaking to another parent about this, I explained that you don't even have to SEE the Nutella for it to be lethal! In all fairness, this mum never, ever realised it could kill a child! but I really had to put it to her very, very bluntly! I think schools have to explain their no-nut policy, why they have this policy...to protect children's lives. Unfortunately, many parents are absolutely not aware of the dangers. My 8 yr old DD will actually tell the teacher that a child is eating sth containing nuts....she will refuse to eat anything that might be dangerous to her cousin when we're back home where her cousin lives. Makes me really proud of her that she is so aware and explaining it to her friends in school. I also have a friend whose son died of an anaphylactic reaction....she has now made it her life-task to develop recipes for people with severe allergies...she even has a cookbook published in the Netherlands with recipes catering for people with severe allergies. Unfortunately, it is not available in English...

Received the envelope with school pictures 2 weeks ago, looked at it once and decided not to order. Up till now I have ordered every year as I like to see the change as they progress through school. But this time...there's one pose that makes her look like she reaaaaallllyyy needs to go to the bathroom, on another she looks like she's tripping over her own feet, the third and fourth one have this weird looking grin. For the last 5-6 months we've been receiving shockingly high bills, ranging from 5K to 6,5K!!! I went online to see what was happening with our bills (as we don't receive any, I printed them off eventually). In the last year, there have been some changes in Dewa's pricing: *since january 2011, they've added a fuel surcharge on electricity; it started with no surcharge, then to 4,4 fils per unit electricity (no idea how they calculate your electricity usage, as my meter says I've used 211 units, then they multiply by factor 40). Now the fuel surcharge is 7 fils per unit. * the slabs they use for the electricity have gone up; Green/Yellow/Orange/Red was 20/24/28/33, charges have now changed to 23/28/32/38 So without changing anything in our use of water/electricity, my charges went up, on average, by 1K Only this month our bill started coming down again as we've got all AC's off. But am not looking forward to our summer bills next year :(

Muurtje, I think we're from the same country....no helmets, but definitely ALWAYS lights on bikes. Got fined once because the back light on my bike was broken and I was biking while getting dark... Police are telling kids nowadays to cycle at least two next to each other so they will be better visible for cars.

Coming from a country where everyone rides a bike, even amidst busy traffic, going to school, going to work, etc. and no one wears a helmet, I think it would be wiser to have children educated about traffic rules (and probably most parents as well :\: ), and making sure they have a proper light on their bike so they will be visible to other traffic. The other day I nearly hit a child that raced from the pavement onto the road without any lights in the dark! Ahelmet prob. would have helped protect her head, but if I had hit her, the helmet wouldn't have protected the rest of her :( But then again, we live in a country where cyclists are not taken into account when considering infrastructure...TBH, I don't let my children take their bikes here to go anywhere, even if we live on the Ranches, whereas back home, my then 8yr old DS went to school on his bike, together with his big brother and a group of friends (albeit in a small village), as everyone takes account of cyclists. That's my main worry here, that people just don't pay attention to cyclists. <em>edited by Rotetho on 28/11/2011</em>

I think the biggest problem lies in the fact that last year only 3 tennis coaches, who ALL lived in the Ranches, were allowed to use the courts for tennis lessons. Even last year they were paying up to 3 months ahead (and I think they have to pay about 2000 Dhs, but correct me if I'm wrong), for which Emaar would block book a court for them. This year, however, Emaar has allowed another 8 companies to use the courts at the Ranches, who payed for the use of these courts as well, and so get a block booking for up to 3 months as well. Last year there were no complaints as it was a limited number of tennis companies that were allowed in to use the courts, this year it has created chaos and a lot of anger with residents as there are now 11 companies renting courts!

Hi Kristina, just found owner....turns out they live just a couple of houses away from us. My DH went to security guard and the owner had just been there to report his missing dog. Really sorry about your dog, I really hope someone will find him soon.

Hi Kristina_rmnv: I've seen your thread about your dog missing....really sorry, but this dog doesn't look like your dog, unfortunately. His paws are thick, his ears are not standing up, and he doesn't listen to Ben/Benny/Diesel. Does your dog have a collar on with a tag and numbers? If so, can you please post so I can checK again? CP: my DH will go to security guards to ask if someone reported a missing dog. Have told the kids to take their bikes and ride around if they see someone looking for a dog. Will give vet. Clinic a call when my DH comes back from security guards. Tnx for your help.

We woke up this morning and found a young Golden Retriever in our garden. He has a collar on, with a blue tag with numbers (no phone number though). Anyone missing this dog, or knows where he's missing from? And where can I call to see who the owner is with the numbers....it doesn't say which vet or anything. He's clearly used to children, as he's playing in the garden at the moment with my kids. Have been looking on the street if we see someone looking, or calling for their dog, but so far, no luck...
