I'm sad too.... plus Ikea has just missed out on me buying a house full of furniture as I'm moving from furnished apartment to unfurnished villa at the moment and need to get it all done before my little one arrives at the end of Feb!

When I got married in Thailand earlier this year I had to get an affidavit stating I was free to marry stamped by the British Embassy in Bangkok, so I'd imagine you would need to see the US Embassy here. I know it's a pain but probably worth just going there - maybe you can get it done there and then or at least find out where you stand. People aren't always great at answering the phone in Doha.

I heard it's because of a pending Civil Defence inspection.... either Civil Defence postponed the inspection date, or they couldn't get the inspection done in time for the original opening date, or something. I know, I'm disappointed too :( but not surprised :(

Hello Ladies, Yes there are alternative health practitioners here in Doha. I have the number for a Cranial Sacral Therapist / Kinesiologist and a homeopath. For the most part such people do not operate officially as businesses here, but offer their services privately, so I'm reluctant to post the contact details on the forum. I don't think there's a private message facility on this site, right? But if you're interested ping me a mail to grundlemumph at hotmail.com

Ladies have a look at Rosey Bare - it's home made here in Qatar. They just released a new price list of the complete product range. There is a range specifically for babies: http://www.wearethecollective.co.uk/roseybareskincare/Rosey-Bare-Price-List.pdf http://www.facebook.com/RoseyBareSkincare

Hey, Not sure if you're still looking but my husband and I rent through AHB and I know that short-term rentals are definitely possible in our building. We're in one of their older towers in Musheirib - Bilal Tower - so it's not too expensive (we pay 7000 a month for our ff 1 bed). Long story but we currently rent on a month-by-month basis. They've got another tower on our street that's newer - Bilal Studios - but I think they only have one bedroom apts there. Anyway Wakra isn't too bad a trip from here, just straight up Airport Road. Might be worth checking out AHB's website if you're still looking: http://www.ahbqatar.com

She also has contact details for other doulas in Doha. One other name I know of is Angela Upward. I've got her phone number let me know if you'd like it. Congratulations btw :)

Oh yeah I forgot to mention you also have Royal Plaza mall on Al Sadd street, which has a cinema and a cool sushi restaurant with one of those conveyor belts. Plenty of entertainment options on your doorstep :)

Hey NEmom, I don't know the specific tower you'll be living in but from your description of what you're after I think you'll be happy with Al Sadd. It's a pretty central location which has a main street lined with shops (with pretty much everything you could possibly want). I've always thought it seemed more alive and 'real' than some other areas in Doha. I guess you could argue about where 'downtown' is here - most big offices, shiny towers and city centre mall are in Dafna aka West Bay but in terms of stuff going on at street level it's a ghost town. I live in Musheirib, the oldest part of Doha, which some would call 'downtown'. Because it's old, it's also a tad grotty in places but it definitely has life! I think Al Sadd is a nice balance atmosphere wise. It's not shabby but it's not super-plasticky either. The only problem you might have is with the traffic. Most if not all of the main roads leading into and out of Al Sadd get pretty clogged with traffic. Your husband might not enjoy his commute much from there! I think your nearest supermarket will be Mega Mart (correct me if I'm wrong ladies) which is an expat favourite - I guess maybe 5-10 mins drive in no traffic but considerably longer during busy times. La Cigale and the Radisson Blu (formerly Ramada) hotels are very close by for meals out with a wee glass of wine!

Hi there, Just wanted to offer you reassurance really - moving country is a major event and you're bound to feel a bit anxious - but I don't think the concerns you've got will turn out to be much of an issue. Life in Doha is different from the UK for sure, and it takes a little while to figure out where everything is and how things work but you'll be on your feet and into your new routine in no time, I'm sure. Regarding getting about with baby to do food shopping - as the other ladies have mentioned it's pretty easy to find a regular driver here. Lots of people use them, and as previously advised you could leave the car seat in the car while you shop or check it in at the bag drop at the supermarket (most of the big ones have this facility here). If you've got a British license, I believe you can use an international driving license for up to 6 months when you arrive (you can get them from a few different places here, or in the UK - that's what I did when I was first in Doha) or yep get a temporary Qatari one. I prefer the freedom of driving myself around but might be good to have a driver to start with while you acclimatise. The baby formula I'm not sure - bring as much with you as you can and as a last resort you could always order online??? Also... For making friends and as a general all-round awesome resource I also highly recommend joining Doha Mums. You need to physically attend an event with them to initiate the membership process but once you join you'll have access to their very useful website forum, connecting you with an amazing network of mums in Doha. I'm sure someone on there will know about the availability of the formula you use. Plus they organise a heap of events for mums and kids, or just mums - a great way to make friends. Like most places in the world, there is unfortunately some racism here - at times it is very obvious (for example the way some police officers may deal with an incident involving a Qatari versus someone of Indian origin or the plight of low-income workers) but at other times I'd say Doha has a more cosmopolitain and accepting atmosphere than a lot of places in the UK. If you go along to a Doha Mums event for example, you'll find ladies from all over the world getting together happily sharing their experiences. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is I guess it depends on what scenario you find yourself in, but for the most part, with native-speaker English communication skills I think you'll be fine! You can get the pill OTC or even on the shop floor shelves in some chemists - no worries - no questions asked! The only thing I've found is they don't always have the brand you're used to from home (you can't get microgynon, that I was using previously, but I just switched and it was fine). You can get alcohol in the 5 star hotels - both bars and restaurants - and there is a fair selection of different ones to try in Doha. Agree with previous poster that it's not particularly cheap though! And yep, once your husband gets his RP it is possible to get an alcohol license so you can buy booze for home from the government off-license. Best of luck for your move. You'll be fine. See you at Doha Mums! :)

Thank you so much for your responses ladies! The thing is, we got married in June, and now I'm in Qatar, so looking for an easy way to complete the process remotely from here. We got an official translation at the time of the wedding. Useful to know it needs to go to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then (I presume) the Qatar Embassy in Bangkok.... Has anyone ever done it by mail? Or used a reasonably priced service in Thailand to do it for you (by mail)?
