Sounds like my DD at 7 months I also need to re settle - for me its by breatfeeding cos anything else will just wake her up fully .... i'm eager to hear other mums expirience Hiya! I have both my mum and mother in law here with me this month, and I am a little self conscious of what they think about my LO daytime sleep patterns as they take care of her while I work. I am okay with the 'routine' and trust that it will work out over time but it makes me wonder what a typical 3 month old might be sleeping like and how closely we are following this. Basically we are up at 6am and then nap for 45 mins at 6:30 or 7am. This is mostly just a feed and a very quick play in bed together (we co-sleep in the mornings from around 3 am). Up at 7:30 then sleep at 9 for 2-3 hours but resettle every 45 minutes. Up at 1 then sleep at 2:30 for two hours with 45 minute resettles. Then catnap at 5 or 5:30. Bed by anytime between 6:30 to 7:30, aiming for 7pm. We're breastfeeding. I think the pattern is not too bad but the resettling is the real issue. Neither mum or MIL mention this happening to them when they had kids but I have spoken to many mums who experience the same. I do cuddle bubs to sleep a lot and she often has a dummy (to my dislike) to settle, I usually put her in her cot while sleepy but awake. I don't have the heart to put her in while wide awake as some books suggest, and I don't believe in crying it out, extinction, and some variants of sleep training. I have been following an attachment parenting style and feel good about it but my doubts are with this resettling issue. Important to know that she sleeps stretches at night of up to 5/6 hours and sometimes 3 or 4 hours. So I guess it would be great to know other experiences and secondly, if I continue this way will she learn to self settle in time? TIA x

First congratulations 45 days is not alot - and unless you have a complication free natural birth you will probably be at home longer I had planned to go back to work but had a c-section and some complictaions - ended up getting a dr note for more time at home for me to recover by the time the baby was 3 months - i was actually ready to go back to work - its much much easier than raising a baby and to be honest in the first few months all they do it eat and sleep! So if i had a dependable family member i would have left him with them and ran to work - the first kid really rocked my world! but thankfully For us the family member who was going to help out with childcare couldnt come to the uae ....so we had to look for a helper ... while looking i put my son on a routine (babywhisperer/babywise/ cecile from babysense) , and like a miracle life turned around - i started really enjoying my baby - at 6 months he was responsive and we where go on adventures .... so at 9 months when all my leave , dr notes , unpaid leave ran out .....i resigned ..... because a job you can change / go back to and pick up where you left off / have to work a bit harder to catch up ....but a job is just that .... something changable and not gauranteed no matter how much you love it or how hard you work A baby grows with you ...loves you .....thier whole world is better just becuase your in it ..... and thier will be a time / usually when they start school .... when they will want independence ... and you can go back to work ........and thus in the grand scheme of things .... have the best of both worlds

I think that most Saffers living abroad have 'a story'. In the old days, you knew someone, who knew someone, who knew someone that was a victim of crime. Nowadays, its a lot closer to home. In 2007, my boys and I were hijacked at gunpoint outside my brother's house. One of the hijackers frisked me down and even pushed my hair back to see what ear rings I was wearing. I was 'lucky' that we were not hurt. Since then, my mother has been broken into at home. It happened in broad daylight. They broke the front gate then axed through the front door. 'Fortunately' they only ransacked the house, stealing all the electronic stuff and jewellry, after they had locked her in a bedroom. Just the other day, she glanced out the window, again at about midday and was surprised to see a white woman in the garden staring back at her! This time, the electric gate had been removed from the rollers. Yes, it is a beautiful country, but I hope that we never have to go back. We love living in Dubai because there are rules and if you don't obey them and you are caught, you will be punished. It's amazing how psycologically fatigued you become in SA... are my car doors locked, where is my handbag, are the windows up, which route should I drive, should I go out at night and risk driving home in the dark? We lived in a boomed off suburb. Within it, we lived in a complex which was surrounded by electric fence. Within that, we had another electric fence around our home. Besides the crime, there is the politics and racism that is still bubbling under the surface, but lets not even get started on that...! so sorry that you and your family had to ensure that ! Really hope the crime situation improves .... i really want to return some day and yes the racism is still there but i seem to expierience more of it here among SA expats than i did at home

a mixture of crime and the idea of the grass must be greener on the otherside a little bit of - you dont know what you got till its gone (or in an expat case till you leave it)

I have a bad habit (is it?) of making things up to get the kids to do things. So when DS2 went for vaccinations recently I whispered in his ear that he wasn't to tell his brothers but I was taking him to see a special man who would give him turbo boosters which would give him special powers. He positively looked forward to the injections and was all proud afterwards. Any other ladies got any silly tricks to share? this is brilliant! I am definitly going to use this one!

When dd was about 3 or 4 she went through a phase of telling fibs. This one time I saw her do something naughty and then she lied about it not knowing I had saw her. So I told her that when she lies a red dot appears on the middle of her forehead and it was flashing because she must of been lying to me. Well she believed me straightaway and burst into tears and admitted what she had done. Worked for years after. Remember one time her covering her head with her hand as she was telling me a fib! lol

I also have the city select - using it for a toddler and baby and it is pretty good when travelling as well all the seats and wheels can easily come off.... so when i had guests i managed to fit the stroller in the little space below my sons car seat I bought mine from john lewis in england ....maybe you can get someone to bring it to dubai for you Its an all round brilliant troller - reasonable price - approx 600 - 700 pounds for the stroller plus all the accesories to use in double mode fits in lifts, allows you to keep an eye on both kids comfortable, can use the maxi cosi car seats with an adapter, very very sturdy even with the nappy bag hanging on the hand rail , etc etc etc only snags with this stroller - when facing away ...cant recline the seats too much when facing each other - for me the best position for sleeping but when they awake and upright - the place for thier feet isnt much - enough but not enough to allow them to swing thier feet oh and it is heavy - i also have a bugaboo cameleon and comparatively its very heavy but i would still highly recommend it

Hi Crystalsindubai I am looking for iron on rhinestones - do you know where i can get these? thanks in advance Hi Ladies. I have looked through the threads on here about bead shops and found some older ones about Naif Souk. Has anyone been here in the past year who can tell me if these stores are still open here...and how to get there? I followed some directions from 2009 yesterday, but they lead me nowhere! Also, does anyone know if this souk will be open this afternoon or tomorrow (with it being Eid)? I have been to Fida in Satwa, but they don't have what I'm looking for (and their prices seem to keep going up)! I also am going to try the Crystal House that people have posted about...anyone know if they are open today? Thanks!! Nowadays, I use the Metro to visit the Gold Souk (the red line to Khalid Bin Waleed, the change to green line; exit at the station before Palm Deira; from there it is walking distance to the multi-level Gold Souk Bldg. Using this entrance to the gold souk, walk to the T-junction (approx 300 m), turn left, walk approx 300-400 m across a r/a intersection. You should then be in the habedashery wholesale market. I would guess that the market will be closed the first day of Eid, but should be open the following days by 5 pm. Perhaps if you could let me know what kind of beads, accessories you are looking for, I could possibly give you further advise.

Like a previous poster mentioned Joburg isnt the best that SA has to offer but it is still a very nice place People are very freindly Drivers in JHB is considered to be the craziest in SA but compared to Dubai - its like driving miss daisy - people are curteous There's quite a few long weekends - so lots of oppurtunity to explore the country Generally good customer service There are places in SA where people dont lock thier doors some dont have locks on thier doors but johannesburg isnt one of them Thier are 9 pronvinces and each one is like a country on its own one of the best things about south african - your not tied into a one year rent contract - so once you get there you can get a feel for the place and what suits you before you decide for certain where you are going to stay etc my recommendation is to find a nice gated community near to your husbands place of work - traffic can get crazy every neighbourhood has at least one golf course estate or similar . These places are usually enclosed and entrance is monitored - within these estates thier are usually nice parks pools walking trails etc that are reserved exclusively for the residents (and the heavy security gaurding the estate hopefully keeps the criminal element out) E.g in Midrand you get blue valley golf estate - a beautiful estate where the houses dont have fences or gates nice sqaush courts etc in Kayalami and carlswald you also get alot of nice complex's as we call them Closer to fourways is a very very nice and popular amoungst the expats estate called DAINFERN Every single neighbourhood regardless of where in SA you go - has at least one of these "posh" estates where you can get a nice house or in dubai language a nice big Villa with nice facilities for you and the kids for the fraction of the cost in dubai check out this website for sales and rentals www.privateproperty.co.za (3 years ago someone i know rented a gorgeuos and big house in a very nice complex for approx 120aed per annum) a 3 bed family house / villa in a gated community not security estate would cost approx 60aed per annum The crawford schools are similar to the Gems schools in terms of qaulity etc crime - it is a problem - most of it is poverty driven so the criminals want your possesions more than anything else so simple things like dont leave your Ipad's phones bags etc in you car in the parking lot - at traffic signals be weary of people hanging around the traffic lights - unfortunately when driving you have to always be alert and public transport is not the best and probably better if you avoid it - the new gautrain (metro) and buses along the cape town coast arent too bad there is really so much more i could tell you i love south africa - its a beautiful and diverse country and someday i will return I hope you have a lovely stay there and if you ever have any questions id be happy to answer them but i am quite certain once you get to SA - you will make freinds who will happily show you around in no time

does anyone have an idea of prices of the bugaboo bee vs the bugabee chameleon? i know they sold at just kidding but when i check their website they only have the bugaboo accessories availablle. TIA HI pilatesmama I have a bugaboo cameleon - it was great when i had one kid, the same base but could use the maxi cosi / bassinet / actual seat Its fairly lightand easy to maneouvour with one hand ....the only thing that bugged me was i needed both hands to open /close it. But i really loved it and found it very easy to use and travel with the only reason i dont use it anymore is - i have 2 kids now and both take midday naps so had to get the dbl stroller (which also needs 2 hands to close!) so another thing to consider would be a stroller that can convert to a dbl stroller when number 2 comes along (some e/g are bugaboo donkey / icandy / babyjogger city select) but if you decide to get a cameleon I have one in excellent condition that i would sell at 50% of the purchase with the acessories thrown in for free my email adress is sandboxtreasures at gmail . com

Its a bit tricky on one hand the person is human and does need to socialise etc - but the risks if they are not responsible are great! We allow our helper to sleep out at her aunties house but now not sure it was the best idea Her aunt brought her t the interview and i had her contact details. i also droppped her off once or twice to see where the aunt lives I wanted her to be happy and spend time with her family But as the aunty puts it "her mind change madam her mind change" She takes the bus to and from her aunt house and on this bus are other maids ... so she makes friends .... and as the aunty puts " madam they no good ...too much here there ...no good ... no good ideas.... " and she has started making freinds with my freinds helpers and has now started telling me how much the other maids earn .... then she tells me about maids with thier own visa's etc and a week ago ...my freind saw her with another family in the mall on her day off(turns out she was helping a freind who's emploey was sick) so now we have the situation where our - brand new to dubai maid is meeting all sorts of people - learning the place and possibly getting bad advice from "friends"

Alot of medical aids / insurance covers vaccines (mine does) but some dont - so check and if yours doesnt - get the health card . you can always go to a ped of your choice but use the health card for the vaccines that would be otherwise very expensive For the first 6-12 weeks - your baby would be feeding on average every 2 hours so try to get help for that time - prefably a proper helper from an agency to do the household chores and cook meals - or maybe allow your freinds and family to bring hot meals to you family from back home are also good but only if thier immediate family that you dont have to entertain while also adjusting to a newborn baby save your energy for your baby and the adjustments the baby brings and get a book - like the baby whisperer that give you an idea how to handle the baby once he / she arrives btw - Congratulations The first 3 months are hard - but after that it gets better - the first smile , the first everything makes your heart melt

There are too many parents who believe this nonsense of " ignore it and it will stop" - fine at home but NOT in a public place. but it actually works .... but if you also do it at home my DS usually puts up a fight for everything from the stroller to high chair - but it usually last a few seconds - a min at most i found that the trick is consistancy you cant keep changing the rules -

slightly off the topic but i have actually encountered people who think if you scold or reprimand our child - its like saying you dont love them ! its sad but true I've hand friends tell me they wont do this or that ...becuase they just love thier kids too much I on the other hand can no longer bear the thought of hanging out with some rather nice friends because they just wont reprimand their children when their naughty and sadly those kids go on to be the one that no-one wants to play with becuase the dont know how behave appropriately

agreed! and maybe get the dunstan baby language dvd to help decode the screams ! If the child was screaming and was disturbing other people, shouldn't you be focusing on that - rather than taking offense - after all the child WAS screaming.

Kids should behave in a restaurant. If they dont, a parent should take them out. And yes, I have kids, and yes, they behave in restaurants. If one of them DID scream, me or dad would take said child out of the restaurant til they calmed down. The other diners havent paid to hear your child screaming. *takes cover* I too have kids - and never mind the others - i want to have a pleasant meal - so continue reinforcing acceptable behaviour to my kids wheather is a restuarant or at home
