Hi Mara, I would like to share my thoughts on this topic. Short-sightedness (aka myopia) by itself generally do not lead to headaches complaints (this is in relations to all other eye associated headache issues, reason being that you would first complain of blurry vision at far before you get to the headaches). It is far-sightedness and astigmatism which will cause symptoms such as headaches and eyestrains if you do need prescription but are not using them. The common saying that "there is more to the eyes than 20/20 vision" is absolutely true. If you are still experiencing headaches with eye glass correction, then chances are a) they are not the proper prescription for your eyes or b) there may be other causes giving you the symptoms. Depending on how complicated the prescription is, it may take you 1 to 4 weeks to adapt and the symptoms shall disappear. I would suggest that if your initial complaint is not resolved completely and you had given it enough time, then go back to your doctor to readdress your complaint. Cheers! :)

I remember reading that article some time back, but surely that can't be the ONLY factory world-wide, can it?? As far as I know, it is the ONLY factory in the world :-)

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the factory in Irwindale, CA has been ordered to shut down due to residents' complaints. So if you find them, stock them up! [url=http://www.forbes.com/sites/rosatrieu/2013/12/12/sriracha-ordered-to-halt-production-for-30-days/'>sriracha[/url'>

I don't know if this remedy really works or not, never tried it myself and hope I won't have to. But I know of a couple people who tried and vouched by it. Making diabetes "disappear" with only that is far fetched in my opinion, perhaps regulating and controlling is a better choice of word. Granted, lifestyle and diet modifications are probably the best ways but I don't think it will hurt to give this a try since you are looking for natural remedies. Basically you cut the ends off of a couple of raw bhindi (okras/lady fingers) with a slit in the middle (I think some just cut it length wise) and soak them in a glass of water overnight at room temperature and drink it first thing in the morning when you wake up. Let us know if you notice any stability in your glucose level. Good luck!

We have been there a few times ourselves, no kids, and we enjoyed it each and every time. First time, we hopped over to La Digue, it was beautiful, but with the ferry transfer, sand flies etc, we decided we would just stay on Mahe on future visits. We didn't do fancy hotels or resorts, but just booked with a very nice self catering villa by the beach at a very reasonable price. Rented a car at the airport (we got a cheaper rate through the villa), so we could drive all over the island. Went beach hopping, hiking, restaurants, night markets/fairs (they have the best octopus curries), etc. So at the end of the day, it depends on your budget and what type of vacation you want. Since it is only the two of you, it makes planning easier. Have a great time!

We are moving back to UK (DD and DH this week) and I'm coming back here after Christmas to 'close things down'. Does anyone have experience of getting deposits back from DEWA / Etisalat and how long it might take? I was very pleased with myself that I managed to sell my husband's car today and did the transfer at RTA etc! Just my Pajero to go now! Exciting times! Congrats on selling the car! Good luck with your Pajero. As for DEWA, to avoid hypertension, be sure to give at least 2 working days from the time you vacate the premise and request cancellation so that they have enough time to send someone over to get the final reading from the meter for the final bill (they did not ask us for the deposit receipt copy either). Also, if it was a rental, you will need to submit a copy of the final bill to your landlord as part of your security deposit refund process. Best of luck with your move!

I love the Lime & Lemongrass fairy - so for me, Fairy all the way ;) hahaha I have used this for a few years, then Lux Sunlight active gel 2x became my favorite for the last 3 years. Finally ran out, it seems they no longer stock them, so went back to Fairy L&L. Smells great, really sudsy (in fact so sudsy that they are coming out of my floor drain!) and absolutely NO degreasing power :( How I miss my Lux SAG2x (green gel, small bottle)! If anyone sees this while you are out shopping, let me know...I will have to stock up a truck load to last me a life time :D

But do you know that a large number of available apartments cannot be registered on tawtheeq as they are units within villas? Do you mean subdivided units within a villa? If it is, I believe that was the main objective of the Tawtheeq, to eliminate the "sharing" of villa for many reasons.

Yes. I understand that but it is all one economy here, right? It's not like the USA where each state's economy is measured separately. It doesn't really matter if my money is going to Fujeirah or Abu Dhabi or any of the other emirates... You are correct. My understanding is that AD wants to support its real estate market as well as the overall development, not to mention lots of those decision makers own a lot of the AD real estate. JM2C :)

Keep in mind that the new policy (what happens to individual cases are anyone's guess) is that in order to get AD visa for government and semi government employees, you must have a leasing contract (number of family visas for a min number of rooms in the accommodation) registered with Al Tawtheeq. So the studio renting tricks have not worked well for everyone and my guess is that they may get stricter with the enforcement. So your worry may not be about the housing allowance but the residency visas. The way I see it is that if the big brother has to continue to bail out Dubai, then it makes perfect sense that they would want to ensure their AD employees spend their monies within the emirate.

Hi Skykitty! So sorry to hear Lapis isn't doing so well. Have you tested the water recently for nitrates/nitrites/ammonia levels? Does he have any rotting fins? Has his color faded with a horizontal black stripe across the body (which means he is stress)? Perhaps coming down with something that is not physically obvious yet. Since you have changed his water but nothing had improved, the next step is to treat him with aquarium salt. You can get this at any LFS, but at a pinch, plain sea salt will do just fine (not our table salt though). Here are the steps: 1) Move him into a smaller sterile container (1 gal is ideal but smaller will do) for ease of water change 2) Clean out all his stuff in the other tank by boiling them in hot water (if permissible) and let them air/sun dry. Then put familiar something into the smaller container while he is quarantine in there. 3) Dissolve 1 teaspoon of sea salt with 1 gallon of water, add your water conditioner (no live plants in there) into this small container. Keep him in there..... 4) Change water every 24 hours with the same 1tsp/gal water mixture formula for the next 7-10 days. 5) Feed him as usual Hopefully he will perk up from whatever that ills him with this easy solution. Good luck. Thanks again! p/s: If you could (and not too much trouble), send me a photo of him. I will try to see if I can see anything wrong with him. <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 05/12/2013</em>

I've always either ordered one from Spinneys or Choitrams. Spinneys unsure as to whether they're doing them this year and we're into December. Any ideas? I do all the veg, just like to pick up a cooked turkey. Saw a sign today in front of Lulu which offers this. I think they offer few different packages; ranges from 70-80dhs per kilo for the cooked turkey. Sorry I only glanced at the sign so not 100% sure of what exactly they offer. Worth stopping by or giving them a call.

Personally, I would opt for Penang....and not just because I am a Penangite. I think you will have more things to do there.....Adventure Zone, Penang Natural Park, Butterfly Farm, Botanical garden, ferry ride, Penang Hill, tour to the temples, etc. The food in Penang are also a much much better option and a lot cheaper and tastier. If you stay at Parkroyal Penang Resort, they have kids' club and horse riding. Anyway, even if it rains in Penang.....you can still step out. I second that! Lots to do for fun. Depending on how old your kids are, they might enjoy parasailing, banana boat ride, jet skiing, and horse riding (on the beach though) which can be purchased inexpensively as a whole package. I personally wouldn't go to the hawker center on Gurney Drive, as it is way too touristy and with mediocre food (IMO), but it is very conveniently located. Enjoy your stay!

I found that by applying online first makes life a little simpler. Besides filling out the simple form, you will have to upload the photos and documents as well. See the link below. You will need to make a payment online, but chances are it won't go through but it doesn't tell you that though which means you will have to go to the Police HQ to make the payment (cash). Make sure to bring the passport copy, emirates ID copy and photos along to be submitted and make the payment(bring the originals too just in case). Then you will be notified when it's ready for pick up. I am sure you could also just print out the actual form and go in person, but I didn't try it that way. Hello ladies, I'm about to sign a new tenancy contract for an apt,the thing is the addendum of tenancy contract states that: "A 90-day prior notice for vacating/renewal/change in terms, from the tenant and landlord,is required on both sides before the expiry of the tenancy contract. From what I know the landlord should give the tenant a one-year notice prior to vacating the apt from his side.. Is there anything I should do with that?knowing that I've already tried to negotiate changing this with the broker.. Is this a normal thing present in the current tenancy contract recently? Plz help! Not a rental law expert; but 60-90 days is the standard for tenants to inform landlords of renewing or vacating and for landlord to inform tenants of change of terms. One year notice is required in the event the landlord does not wish to renew due to main 4 reasons ie move in himself, his next of kin moving in, renovation, or selling with supporting documents. HTH :)

He explained he needs to do this as he is not a UAE resident and has to legally appoint a letting agent and plans to do this when he visits Dubai early next year. I have registered the current contract with Ejari myself. I am a little concerned about what this change would mean for us as tenants? Is it correct that he has to legally appoint a letting agency now, as he has not been a resident for the last 3 years? It all sounds rather fishy to me. I know someone who owns a property here and hasn't been a UAE resident for the past years but I haven't heard of such BS about needing to legally appoint a letting agent to manage his property due to being a non-resident.

Hi Ladies, does anyone know where i can find a bar counter in dubai for my house. Have looked all over. The ones in home centre, pan emirates etc are so small and not very nice. Want something preferably wooden and L-shaped. We even looked in dragon mart but nothing. We found a man in karama who can make one for us but would be easier if we could just buy one ready made as not sure what we might end up with as the english wasnt so great. thanks alot :) I have seen some at Crate & Barrel. They are wooden, but don't recall being L-shaped though. HTH :)

HI I need some help we are moving to Abu Dhabi & I'm looking for a good Estate Agent to show us some properties. I have been recommended Al Khalidiya, Al Karamah, Al Musalla, Al Mushrif, Al Rowdah & Al Reem Island for places to live what are these like today, so they have restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets & small shops within easy access. I won't have a car when I first arrive & expecting our first baby in March 2014 so I will need to get around with a stroller. Does anyone has any other recommendations on good places to live. We'd like somewhere that there's some parks to be able to go for walks & not too noisy with traffic while in the apartment at night. Regarding properties do any include kitchen appliances such as dishwasher, washing machines, fridges, cookers, microwaves or is this standard that these are not included. Can you buy this second hand or it is best to buy new? I know this is alot of questions but we want to make the best decisions when we arrive to make life a little easier. Many Thanks I do not have a whole lot of knowledge about the other developments, but the one I am familiar which is Al Raha Beach which seems to fit your criteria. Al Muneera community which is about 2 years old provides white goods such as washer/dryer, cooker, dish washer, refrigerator. Al Zeina community only provide cooker and you will have to buy the rest yourself. Depending on which side of the building you are in, the noise level varies. The side facing the sea is breathtaking (assuming you are high enough) and super quiet and the winter breeze is amazing! They have shared pools and gyms. Easy access to supermarkets ie if you are on the Al Bandar side, there is a Spinneys there. If you are in Al Zeina, there is a Waitrose. Al Raha Beach continues to improve the surrounding areas, promenade for strolling and private beaches to enjoy. Easy access to the highway and Yas Island. As Sarahlou pointed out, it is difficult to find good agents and I have been dealing with many over the years. The one chap in AD that I do not mind dealing with is Chris at MD Real Estate, they have an office in Al Zeina compound. Let me know if you want his contact, I could forward it to you. It can be a really frustrating experience. There are plenty to choose from, depending on the are you want to be in, some areas are newer/convenient compared to others. Let your fingers do the work for now, and search through the websites and narrow down to the areas you want to be in, and familiarize yourself with the different floor plans (most are readily available online) so you know what you like and don't like. This way it will be most productive when you have to do viewings as not to let the agents waste your time. Be sure you are firm with your criteria and warn them you only want to see units that fit the bill, otherwise you will be led astray! Good luck with your search. Cheers!

I know for sure Arabian Nights offers this. Depending on the number of participants, you could try to get a discount if just doing the post dune bashing experience. Yes :) But beware that if the item you are returning is sold for a lesser value at the branch you are going to, then they will only refund you the lesser value and not the price you paid for. However, the difference is probably nominal so may be worth it just for not having to track all the way back to MoE.

In my experience, the FD/TDs rates are too low for the amount of lock down time required. As Polly mentioned, the -savers accounts might be worth looking into, also need to weigh the pros and cons of stashing cash here. Keep in mind AED account yields higher interest than USD account here. The rates offer here are quite decent, not the best and not the worst (like US). ADCB active-saver offers 1.75% for 100k to 2MM. (one transaction per month with no penalty) RAK Bank fast-saver offers 2.00% for up to 5MM. (one withdrawal + 5 utilities payments with on penalty)

It is brand new. The soft opening was in August, so the rates are much cheaper now. There will be a big shindig for the official opening on October 1st. We enjoyed our stay there over the weekend when it's a bit more busy (but not crowded at all). It has the nicest beach front along the entire stretch. The swimming pool was very nice, lots of private gazebos dotted along the pool and beyond as well as the usual lounges etc. Good size gym with the latest technogym exercise equipments. Spa was decent, nothing to write home about though. The restaurant we visited was Qasr Al Bahar, I think we gained 3kg each from overindulging over the weekend. We had a junior king suite room, the walk in closet was as large as my guest bedroom! Excellent hotel, great staff!

Thank you very much ladies for the comments. I really felt heart broken after attending the interview and tests and being told the salary is 13% what I used to earn in Dubai. Since both my children enjoy the new school a lot and my husband feels less stress than in Dubai. I think I will look for a job in Singapore or if any company can offer me 30% what I used to earn I shall take the offer. I think you may need to have alternative plans while exploring SG option. Not sure if you have done any tutoring previously, would you consider giving private 'tuition'? It is a big demand in MY (as most public school systems standards have deteriorated). You might make more per month than the measly offer you just had (assuming you are in demand and working most hours). You could probably teach math or Mandarin or whatever your strong subject may be. Something to keep you busy for the time being while looking for a permanent position. Not sure if this will work or not, but just throwing it out there..... Here is a link to the fee guideline [url=http://www.tuitionmall.com/tuition-rate.php'>link[/url'> Here is someone looking for a Mandarin teacher in your area [url=http://www.myprivatetutor.my/tuitionpost/6654/mandarin-teacher-wanted-Johor-Bahru.html'>link[/url'> Best of luck! <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 17/09/2013</em>

We had a really enjoyable stay at the Waldorf Astoria. It is still in the soft opening phase, so the rates are considerably cheaper. The Qasr Al Bahar restaurant where breakfast is served has excellent food selection of good quality. The beach is very nice. The swimming pool is great, but I think the main complaint for family is that there is no dedicated kiddie pool, but they have a children's playground. We had a junior king suite with sea view....boy, i could stay there forever! :-)

Sorry to hear you are having such a difficult time in your job hunt. But JB is not going to get you anywhere near Dubai's salary standard. I know of people working in SG, but live in JB. KL will be a better bet to find a decent paying job and more opportunities. There are 60-70% of Malaysian Chinese who are triligual (+ dialects), so you are not standing out among the local talents. The only thing that stands out is your high salary expectation? I have a lot of Accountant friends there, and most of them are stationed in KL of course. I know some had worked their way up from very low paying jobs when they first started out. Still pay wise, you won't be seeing the same salary offers as you did in Dubai. However, with 15 years of experience, RM2000 offer was a total insult! Is JB the only place you want to be? Have you tried looking for work in SG or even considered KL? JB is just such a small potato in the big scheme of things. Are you applying through agencies or through the company? I understand that you will have better luck if you visit/contact (in person or website) the companies you are interested in. Best of luck! Hopefully something great will come along.

I have an LG Direct Drive and I dont know why I purchased it. I had an LG at home and it sounded like a 747 taking off, now after 3 years this one the direct drive has turned into an A380 (its a bigger model than my other one). Will NEVER buy an LG washer again. That is rather strange...perhaps yours was defective to begin with? I have a LG DirectDrive 7kg front loader, and I could barely hear it (I can see it from where I normally sit), and sometimes I forgot it was running until I hear the musical notification at the end of the cycle.

The timing is about right, try to be there at 7am. They have a new policy now that they will only take a maximum of 40 patients a day at the Bur Dubai branch. There is another branch in Al Barsha if it is closer to you. Unless the law has changed recently, you might want to call their pharmacy to confirm that they do sell Malarone. The last we went, the doctor wrote a Rx for it, but then all pharmacies are not allowed to sell them including that clinic. The only hospital at the time who shipped in their own stock was American Hospital which you will need to get an Rx from their own Dr in order for them to sell to you. If you are prescribed Malarone, which is the most effective anti malaria med i know, it is rather expensive and to be taken daily. Make sure you take it in the morning right after breakfast preferably with dairy. All the trouble of getting the vaccinations and anti malaria was worth it as Tanzania was amazing! :) Keep your eyes out for tse tse flies though...they are vicious :-( Have a great time!

If you are a genuine seller and not in a big hurry to sell, when you list it on Dubizzle, don't include your phone number, just your email. Post the maximum amount of photos, and list any problems or added value features on there, and screen through the emails. 8 out of 10 people are either used car dealers or bottom fishers or flippers, they want to make a profit off you, so depending on your circumstance, you may or may not want to deal with them. I have sold 3 cars in the last 3 years via Dubizzle, there are genuine buyers out there, but you have to screen through a lot of ridiculous offers first so email will help reducing your chances of getting a stroke from the callers :D (assuming you priced your vehicle within current reasonable market rate). Good luck!

Can anyone recommend a good car workshop for Lexus oil change and regular monthly services? I no longer want to go to the dealers service center. Do you rack up 5000km a month that you need monthly service? Any Emarat Fast Track stations will do the minor services for a fraction of the price at a fraction of the time too.

You can only apply for the device from the branch you opened your account in, so he definitely won't be able to get the device in Doha. They are either a little key fob like device or a mini calculator looking thingy depending on which country/branch. We had to carry all six of them while on a really long holiday. Can anyone tell me how much it costs approximately here. I know its subjective in that the amount of damage but a price range? Reason being my mom is in Canada and was advised. Hers is not ripe enough that its not covered by the Provincial health care so it would cost 3000 in Canada. Wondering if better to have it done here as she's here for the next 12 weeks. I am not privy to the current prices they charge here but in my experience, medical fees for major surgeries here are quite similar to US/Canada . There is a set fee for the surgery, and depending what which type/brand of lens implant your mom chooses, the cost will then vary. I would imagine there may be more lens implant options in Canada then here. "Ripening" is just a term used for the laypersons and may not have any bearing on how that individual sees/feels. For example, a person with a beginning stage of cataract (and there are 3 major types of cataract formation) with good eyesight when measured may not at all be happy with what that person sees or feels even though on paper that person is seeing fine. Conversely, a person can be told the cataract has ripen, but that individual may not feel the adverse impact the cataract has on his/her daily life. But in general, the surgeons would not recommend to wait until the lens hypermature as it can create complication especially on those individual with certain medical condition or taking certain medicines. My point is don't let the doctor dictates when to have surgery, it's the patient who is seeing through those cloudy lenses, so they should be the best judge if they need it earlier. My question are: Is your mom not happy with her vision? Are the cataracts affecting her daily life? Was she advised to have them removed immediately because of some existing condition? If the answer is no to all three, then take your time and research for a good cataract specialist, not Jack of all trades..... If you are interested in Dr. Grimm's fees, why don't you just give her office a call (or other offices) and compare? Cheers! :)

The fireflies at Kuala Kuantan around 50 mins from KL are worth a visit. That would be Kuala Selangor or Kampung Kuantan for the fireflies :) Kuala Kuantan would be a bit far in Pahang. 3 or so weeks ago, there weren't too many of them due to the haze from Indonesia so one had to get up close to the bushes to see some. Hopefully they are back to normal and twinkling away. Have an inexpensive yummy seafood dinner near by before your night adventure.

Or, really off the beaten track, but getting fab reviews, Rwanda for the gorillas? http://www.elegantresorts.co.uk/rwanda/c Qatar Airlines goes to Kigali! Gorillas trekking is an incredible experience but her kids are quite young so are not eligible at this time. If you are into nature and looking for relaxation with some activities (to entertain the kids), I would suggest Seychelles. 4 hours flight from here, depending on your budget, you can splurge at 5* hotels or rent a semi-luxurious self catering place at a really great place. The kids can swim or snorkel (although snorkeling isn't that great unless you know the spots) or venture out during low tides to find marine creatures "trapped" in the water pools. For something more invigorating, hiking at the national park (find easier level for the children), or go to orchard to pick up some fruits etc, or weekend night fair to try out the local cuisines. Really plenty to do as long as you have a car (car rental is reasonable too). If you have a lot of time, island hopping is also possible to Praslin or La Digue with the island ferry unless you want to splurge, you could try the helicopter :-) Wherever you choose to go, have a great time!

There is a kiosk right across from Ikea by the elevators that does personalized plaques and stuff, I thought I had seen doormats there well. Worth a try.

Yes, ACE does. Costing a pretty penny too considering they appear to be on the flimsy side :)

Does anyone else problems with their washing machine? Ours is not level on the floor and no matter what we do to level it, it still dances about when spinning the clothes. What is the answer to this problem? why does it do it? I am assuming that you have been trying to level with the adjustable plinth legs on the washer? As the other posters suggested, perhaps the leveling of the floor is so off that you would need to use some sort of wooden planks to keep it leveled. There is a possibility that you have a loose drum from uneven heavy load distribution at some point that now every time it spins, it will do the wiggle jiggle :(

Spinny's Umm Sequimm has them too! In the bread baskets with the fresh breads from the bakery. I haven't tried them yet though. Don't bother, they are just these round doughnuty looking thing masquerading as bagels. Really give the real bagels a bad rep :D

Hi Ladies, Anyone recently done this online? I have applied before and having trouble with the online form not liking jpeg photos/ documents uploaded so about to try pdf files. Do I need to go to the police station as well to get fingerprinted? Thanks for your help, I did do a search but the posts didn't really answer this. The online payment doesn't seem to work even if the rest goes through. So you will end up having to go in person to make the payment, and they act like you had not applied (even though you had the print out) , and then go again to pick up the cert when it's ready. So save yourself the hassle of tinkering with the online form and just go in person, it's less painful :)

Just had renewal quotation for motor insurance and wondering if I can negotiate a better price with them (AXA). Is this the done thing? I was expecting the quote to be less than it is, due to additional year's NCD plus 12 months depreciation in value. Thanks . Absolutely! Take a minute to call RSA or other large insurance players, this will give you some idea if the rate given to you by AXA is reasonable and also give you the extra leverage to negotiate. I had gotten many offers from local bank's insurance departments and I used that to negotiate. AXA will try to match or reduce the quoted premium if they are able to. Just ask :)

Everything works, but voice calls are blocked. It's not illegal, they just won't let you use it :D
