We did exactly the same thing, but did purchase the converter to bring with us. It is an Emerson EVC1575 universal digital converter. Do not watch TV, so only used the first few months in the beginning and then put in closet for storage. <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 26/10/2012</em>

That happened to me a few years back. I knew for sure it couldn't have been my car because I just got back from the States and had a doctor's appointment that day. So I ran all over Dubai, from RTA to the police station next to it, and they sent me to Al Awir (Aweer?) Police Station. I insisted I was at the doctor's, he should call the doctor for proof. At the end of the day, I was lucky to find someone who was willing to pick up the phone to call Fujairah to inquire about the speeding fine and asked for the photo proof which was what I wanted. The police officer was on the phone for quite some time, and finally told me it wasn't my car...phew! We all know what the rules are here, but what the outcomes would be are anyone's guess. A lot of time it's about luck. Perhaps you should try Al Awir Police station? Sorry for not able to give you more info, that area was very new to me, but somehow I got there and back. Good luck to you. <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 22/10/2012</em>

If they become debilitating and affecting our daily lives, then surgery will be the only viable option in the end. Orthotics can only help to a certain extent. Studies have shown that the longer you wait and the older you become, the healing process is delayed and usually the surgeons would have to deal with other issues besides just the bunions. The change in the foot anatomy will change your gait posture etc, and sometimes that can cause back/spine issues as well. I had both feet done at the same time, and I am so glad I did both. They sure cost a pretty penny, but it was so worth it in the end (one year later). The most important thing is to do your research well. Not all surgeons are created equal and we have to understand and accept the possible complications if considering surgery. She may want to look into health insurance coverage. If it is medically necessary, it should be covered. No matter what, wishing her the best of luck and hope this issue gets resolved soon. It's a whole new life, once you get "new" feet underneath you :)

Hi Sarah Joy and SkyKitty, thank you very much for the offer. I may take you up on that when I become "desperate" in finding good homes for the remaining two. If you don't mind sending me an email at my username at yahoo dot com, I would appreciate it so then I can email you later to check with you as I don't keep up with EW posts . SkyKitty, I will be relocating overseas and then traveling for a year, so I won't be able to transport them or to take care of them while away. Lapis is the Boss in the group :) Loves to eat and flare, but sure hates water changes. Thanks again for your kind offer :)

For one thing, cursive handwriting is generally faster than print handwriting. As expatriate pointed out, it is also the time when fine motor skills is further improved and perfected. This applies to anything else we do in life I supposed. For instance, I write Chinese characters, if I didn't know how to do the "cursive/shortcut" version, I would be at a great disadvantage. On the other hand, I guess someone could always argue that it's the computer age, as long as you have fast typing skills, who cares about writing. Again, this goes back to fine motor skills we need for other tasks :) JM2C ETA as others pointed out, it is also a benefit if we know how to read them too. <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 17/10/2012</em>

You can get "tender" (green) coconuts from all the Indian supermarkets (Lulu etc) and also in cafes in Karama etc, just ask them to chop the top off and stick your straw in and off you go. Coconut water is supposed to be the healthiest thing you can drink :) Like in Africa :) I miss that. Sahara, I meant the ones they were shaving down. I thought that was the mechanical buzzing I heard, like a shaver. Sometimes I see them in the refrigerator section, too, as if they are ready to go. Or in Thailand. You tell them you want coconut, and they will climb up the tree in front of you and pluck one off for you. Can't get any fresher than that right? :) Yup, the brown old ones they shave for fresh shredded coconut, love them!

Really? I thought they were to drink out of! Next thing, I'll be on here "has anyone else gotten a stomach bug from drinking a coconut from Lulu's what do I dooooooo? :) :D you mean the brown ones sitting in the giant metal crate, right? Don't worry, you won't get stomach bug from them. The water just doesn't taste that great when the coconuts are old, they are best kept for coconut milk.

Lulu sells "fresh" coconuts from Thailand in the fruit section, usually already prepared, just need to cut off the top a bit, poke the straw in and drink but other times with the whole husk still attached. I don't drink canned coconut water/juice, so can't help you with the brands.

Dr Habash does see kids yes. I took my 3 year old son to him and a month later to Millicent Grim. They both had compltely different ideas on how to handle him (although both agreed that he was seriously far sighted). In the end DH and I were so confused that we took him to an Opthamolgist back in Australia. The Opthamologist gave us yet another prescription, however it was closer to Millicent Grim's prescription than Dr Habash's. (hmmmm, sorry if that didn't make sense!) Makes perfect sense to me because neither of the former two are pediatric ophthalmologists :) Prescribing for young children especially those to correct lazy eyes (amblyopia) or eye turn (strabismus) or together, is both art and science. Pediatric ophthalmologists who work with these cases day in day out and up to date with current research and studies and base on their own experiences know best on how and how much to prescribe. Again, you will never find exactly the same two prescription from two different doctors. Actually it is possible that you may not find the same manifest prescription from the same doctor if there are multiple visits because it would also depend on the child's cooperation that day etc. I definitely agree that 2nd opinion never hurt unless you already found the best pediatric ophthalmologist :)

I recently saw Dr Nadim Habash in American Hospital. I had initially planned to go to Moorfields but got put off both by the long wait and by some horror stories I heard of folks being given wrong prescriptions due to drs being in a hurry (something I've encountered b4 and has put me off too-busy eye drs). Dr Habash was excellent - very thorough and checked everything. What really won me over was he ended with "you don't need to see me annually, even if it becomes 15 months or so it's fine". I have quite bad myopia and I find it refreshing that a dr does not insist on an annual check up. I don't know if he does kids though. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I would be worried if I had bad/high myopia and my doctor does not insist on checking on me every 12 months or earlier. I guess it boils down to your definition of "bad myopia" (perhaps it's not bad/high in his opinion) so he was lax about it. :)

I have four betta fish (aka siamese fighting fish) looking for adoption. They are really low maintenance, no air bubble or filters needed, feeding 1-2 times a day. A 2-gal fish bowl or plastic container ie critter keeper is sufficient to house one fish (the smaller the size, the more frequent water change is required). Here are the brief description for them: (age = how long they have been with me) 1) Lapis - blue color, veil tail, ~1.2 years old, very active and funny, can swim backwards like a dolphin, loves to flare 2) Sinatra - mustard green color, delta tail, ~ 9 months old, very active 3) Captain Hook - Dark blue with red streaks, half moon tail, ~ 1 y/o, very caring, spend most time building his bubble nests. Swims slow due to his heavy full fins. 4) Pinky - purple pink color, veil tail, ~ 5 months old, very active and love to swim around and around occasionally making bubble nests. email me at my username at yahoo dot com if you are interested in bringing one or all home. I can send photos. Only the fish is up for adoption, not the housing equipments. Thanks.

We're going very soon and the government website says no yellow fever vaccination certificate is required. What does that mean? Does it mean you dont need the jab or just that you dont have to prove that you've had it. My understanding is that if you are flying in from a non-endemic area ie UAE to an endemic area ie Tanzania, you are not required to have proof of YF vaccine. So in this scenario, it is a personal choice on whether you are willing to take a chance.

We will be staying at Maru Maru in Stone Town for a couple of days, and then The Zanzibari after. There are hotels from 1 star to 5 stars so you get to choose which one suits your budget and taste. I don't think it's hard to get visa on arrival, just a matter of patience, unless you have a short transit time. If you are transiting from DAR to ZNZ, it's best to get your visa ahead of time because the 1.5 hr may not be enough, all you need is your first segment flight arrive late, and your second segment leaves early, and that will just ruin your entire plan. Malarone is only available at American Hospital in the whole of Dubai that I know of. The gov't pharmacies carry other brands. LOL..find the tablets first, then you will have all your answers. :D If you go to the gov't clinic, just be sure the doctor writes you the brand that you can get from the gov't clinic or hospital pharmacies. We got a total of 12 jabs each, as we are spending a whole month in East Africa so it's better to be safe and got everything under the sky.

Hi Shannon, I just finished planning our trip to Tanzania. This is what I know from my research and experience. does anyone know if americans need a visa to enter zanzibar (lay over in tanzania) if so what is the process? Yes, US passport holders require visas. does anyone know the cost for a visa whether it be on arrival or before? Visa is $100, most other countries is $50. Yes, visa on arrival is possible. If it is not too much trouble for you to get the visa ahead of time, the Tanzania Consulate is on Umm Al Sheif Road and the visa can be done within 48 hrs in most cases. also does anyone know if it is REQUIRED to have certain vaccines before going there from dubai, and or is it required to have certain vaccines to re enter dubai... Yes, Yellow Fever vaccine is a must. The rest is up to you. Zanzibar is a malaria risk area, so it is recommended you have the meds for it. if so... how far in advance do you have to have these before traveling and how easy is it to get them, and what is their cost? Yellow fever vaccine is effective 10 days after administration for a period of 10 years. Yes, only Gov't clinic administer Yellow Fever vaccines. The clinic we went to was Al Mankhool Health Center. If you require other vaccines, this is probably a good place to get as the cost is very reasonable. YF vaccine costs 200dhs. The anti Malaria tablets Malarone which we prefer (supposedly most effective with the least side effects) can only be purchased from American Hospital which the pharmacy will only accept a prescription from AH. The cost of the tablet is 30Dhs each, you will need to start two days before travel, a pill each day during your travel and 7 days after you finish your travel. We just spent 2520Dhs today on them :( thanks so much for any help, we just had the last minute idea to go somewhere over eid and i have always wanted to go there, i hope there is enough time to get everything sorted out :) If you can get flights there, the rest is easy. There is some promotions happening at some hotels I believe. The high season is at end of December where prices can double in some. Have a great time! <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 14/10/2012</em>

Etisalat told me I can have only 1 number under my name. Who from Etisalat told you that you can have unlimited numbers? The first rep I spoke to named Deana (sp?), the second rep was a man whose name escapes me said unlimited, the third one Mitl (sp?) said 5 post-paid and 5 pre-paid can be registered under one individual. There you have it....You have to go do it to see which "rule" applies to you :D Ah so the usual not very consistent info.. Unfortunately. The only consistent info I got was that from now on when your ID/Visa expires, you must re-register your SIM card again with the new documents.

Saharagypsyrose ; it's hardly the UAE / Etisilat's fault if you didn't follow instructions..... The instruction was to go re-register which I did. I simply made the mistake of registering it to my name, which isn't a big deal as I could easily undo the mistake by re-registering again to DH if need be. Time waster, but feasible. There is no need to go buy another SIM card as per your suggestion and at no point did I say it was UAE/Etisalat's fault for my mistake. In any case, I called Etisalat to clarify this 6 month period. The explanation was that if you register the SIM card that was not originally yours, there will be a 6 month "probation" period (temporary registration) where the original subscriber of that SIM card have the right to object and make a case to claim the SIM card. If no objections are raised during the 6 month period, then the SIM card/number will permanently belong to you. Visitors without residence visa can still re-register with their passports. Basically they just want all the SIM cards accounted for, and to know who the subscribers are. There is no limit to how many SIM cards you can register under your name as long as you are responsible for their usage. This seems logical, but I am sure you would probably get varied answers from different representatives.

Thanks-the FAQS on the Etisalat site said you could do that for 6 months-unsure what happens after that-would prefer not to get new sim cards and have to change numbers obviously Well, that's not good then. I mistakenly thought the sim I am currently using now was registered under my name so I brought my ID card etc. But it dawned on me after I had re-registered with Etisalat that it was actually under DH name but now it's in my name. Does that mean I have got 6 months only with this number? Why are things around here never straightforward? :( edited by Saharagypsyrose on 10/10/2012 Things are really easy: You get a number in your name and teh you re-register in your name..... simple :) But why would I want to do that when I am perfectly happy with the number I have used for the last 6 years? It is not easy when you have to change your number with all the banks, gov't offices and contacts. Isn't the whole point of this exercise is to have all the sim cards accounted for, and those that were not re-registered will be made useless? At least according to their system, my sim card won't expire until 2037 :) assuming I live that long and haven't lost my sim :D

If you haven't talked about whether to do rings or pleats, then the quoted price is likely just for the fabric panel itself. The ring styles of course are cheaper, as less fabric is needed, it will give you the waves look when opened. If I remember correctly, the rings are extra and they need to know how many rings you want to put on per panel and what type of rings ie plastic vs chromes etc. and then factor in the labor charge. Better yet, ask them again :) In my experience as well, they don't bargain much, they might knock off a few dhs more if you can speak Chinese :D The best way to bargain and know how much you can ask for discount is to shop around the mart and use them as your leverage.

Yes I do. This excerpt is taken from here [url=www.thebigview.com/buddhism/karma.html'>thebigview[/url'> which explains it better than I can. Reading the whole article is helpful if you are interested in this philosophy. [i'>Buddhists understand karma as a natural law. There is no higher instance, no judgement, no divine intervention, and no gods that steer man's destiny, but only the law of karma itself, which works on a universal scale. Deeds yield consequences either in the next second, in the next hour, day, month, year, decade, or even in the next lifetime, or in another distant lifetime.[/i'>

Since you have been to Maldives, perhaps you should try Seychelles. A lot more to do, either total vegging out on the beaches (plenty to choose from if you are on Mahe, I would save island hopping to later when you have more time) or invigorating hiking to experience different fauna & flora of the region and be rewarded with amazing views or mingle with the locals during food fair and try out their amazing octopus curry! It's a lot cheaper if you want to do self catering and not looking for 5* treatment. I have been to Maldives 8 times, and Seychelles 5 times :) and I love them both for different reasons! In Asian cupping, there is no blood removed FYI, in Chinese medicine, blood can also be drawn during cupping, depending on the physician's judgement on whether it is necessary or not. The point where the blood is let out is done using a normal syringe tip before the cup is placed on the skin. My DH thought I was crazy when I showed him the photos :)

International Driving Permits are issued by the country where the driver's license was issued. So they would need to get them in the UK prior to coming here (at the post office I would imagine). Just need to have that along with the UK valid license to hire cars here. Car rental companies in most countries would recognize UK and US driver's license without international driving permits, but I prefer to play it safe and get one just in case. HTH!

Interesting. It would be pretty challenging to then re-apply if we want to come back to the US, so not sure it's worth the hassle. I am assuming you are referring to reapplying for the US permanent residency? If you give up, I don't think you can ever get it back. I will stand corrected though. Agree with Div. Mine has a spare tire hitched on the back door because I prefer a bigger fuel tank which if fills to the top, can run about 1100km. So if you go to the petrol station, don't queue behind a Prado with a spare on the back door, you may have to wait longer ;)
