Shukela, I so know what you are going through. It is unfortunate you have to deal with these people are just so inconsiderate and on the contrary, turn around and treated you as the offender. From what you have said so far, I don't think sending the letter is going to do much good, but probably escalate the issues further. I would do as Di@DXB suggested, continue to call the police. However, for extra precaution measure, put up a warning sign on your allocated spot. I would also raise this issue with security and management, they are obviously not doing their job. You should request for them to put up a notice to remind residents. Finally, I would also take photos of said offending cars, so that no one can use the "innocent mistake, only this once" BS. Good luck!

It would depend on the amount of the fine, and whether you have the time, energy and patience to do it :) I had successfully disputed a fine years ago, but they put me on a wild goose chase for an entire day, and perhaps it was my lucky star that at the end, I found an officer who was willing to go the extra step and made some calls (fine was from another Emirate) and found that there was a mistake on the license plate number data entry. Good luck to you if you decide to brave it.

Sarahgypsyrose, thanks for the name of that insecticide. I will need to check with the cargo company to see if it is something we are allowed to bring with us. They said I was not allowed to take Raid or anything, but I think they meant anything in spray cans. For example, they said I couldn't bring Easy Off oven cleaner. Pretty much I think I need to bring as many plastic storage containers with tight lids as possible to store my food in (pretty sure they're cheaper over here!) and get an exterminator once we get over there. You're welcome. I believe the shipping company meant any flammable stuff. This Advion is a very small package and sealed, you could either ship it in the container or your check-in luggage on your way over. Good luck with the move :)

osubuckeye, since you are still in the States, order yourself the Dupont Advion cockroach gel bait. It is professional grade and probably the same if not better than what the PC companies use here and extremely cost effective. It is easily applied in cupboards and under cabinets. In cases where you have german cockroach infestation, their babies are dot-like size which makes it impossible to see, let alone kill. The PC people came for the extermination, but the effect didn't last long. So I had to get my own. For the 1.5 years since my DH applied them, I haven't seen any live ones. Once in a while I would check on these micro dollops on the edge of cupboard and would see some new dead babies (dot like size) so they are still effective after all this time. HTH :)

Saragypsyrose - thanks for your feedback - where did you have your surgery..1 year recovery in terms of swelling sounds scary.. I searched high and low for a year and finally chose a surgeon in Singapore. I had mine done 3 years ago comes June. How compliant you are in the initial stage of recovery can make a big difference down the road. So imagine having to put your feet up 24/7 for first 3 weeks :D Well, I was really paranoid about the recovery, so I guess I was a bit extreme in my after care lol Yes, the swelling became worse at the end of the day but it slowly reduced day by day and became completely normal pass 1 year mark. This appears to be the norm for most recovery. I am so happy I had mine done, but I think it's important to know all the possible side effects out there and manage your expectations well, and of course finding the right surgeon for your specific case because there are a lot of surgical methods out there and surgeons would favor or specialize in one method over another and which may not be appropriate for the type of bunion you have. Good luck and happy feet!:)

I agree with Suzy. If you have bunions on your feet, it won't matter how wide the shoes are, as long as there is an angle or height difference from your toes to your heel, the chances are you would be uncomfortable. High heels generally would aggravate the symptoms of bunions. I would suggest the same advice as Suzy's or reserve the high heels to special occasions. The bunions could get worse (not saying yours would) to the point where even wearing normal flat shoes would be painful to walk. As for bunion surgery, yes, you can still wear heels once your recovery is complete. But again, if you are genetically predisposed to bunions, there is a chance they will return because you are still putting pressure on the balls of your feet at an angle for a prolonged period of time that is unnatural anatomically to begin with. The recovery time varies, from 3 weeks (and that's just able to walk), but the swelling will take a year or so to completely disappear assuming there were no complications. So besides wishing you good luck on finding wider fit shoes, take good care of the health of your feet as well. We take them for granted until they fail us, which I realized during my recovery :) Best of luck!

or Decathlon at MCC. I have a couple of pairs of brand new Tecno Pro Aquaria for sale if this is the similar type you are looking for. Email me at my user name at yahoo dot com if interested. Are your fins for kids?? DS could do with one. Will send you an email One is for kid and the other pair is for adult. The good thing about these ones is that they are adjustable. The small pair I have is a S to M size (US 3 - 8), the adult pair is ML-XL (US 8.5 - 13). If the child's feet continue to grow, the back of it (heel part) can be adjusted to accommodate. The rubber feet part is quite soft and made in Italy. HTH.

The easier way to advertise is on Dubizzle. Don't put any for sale signs on your car as you would likely get fined. If you own the car, then it's easy to do. Just need to have your registration card. If you finance the car, then you need to get a clearance letter from your bank. (the detail steps I am not too sure as I had owned my car previously, but I am sure someone will chip in with info I have missed) So basically the steps I went through were: 1) list car 2) interested buyer comes to "test drive", agree on price 3) deposit to hold the car if interested, need to write a receipt for said deposit and a timeline of when this transaction must be carried out 4) if interested buyer needs to finance the car, then you need to go with interested buyer to an authorized dealer to have the car assessed, the "value" statement of the car can be ready few hours later 5) give copy of registration to buyer so that buyer can get insurance on the car 6) agree with buyer when to go to RTA to complete transfer of ownership/exchange of $ 7) remember to remove Salik tag and cancel 8) get a copy of buyer's new registration card and bring to your insurance company to cancel your policy HTH, Good luck!

I agree that you should wait till you are in Cape Town to buy the cable car tickets. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and know when the clouds will be rolling in as you won't want to visit during that time since you won't be able to see much. While we were there, they tended to roll in in the afternoon, so we visited in the morning, hopefully someone give you better advice on this.

6-8 months in advance? I have to get cracking! Thanks again Saharagypsyrose You are welcome! Yes, DH is now looking to fill 2013...so I need to get my 2012 trips sorted out. But I must admit I am a little behind this year, but almost done with my planning for our July trip. is it safe to drive yourselves as we want to do this too ? many thanks. I think in that 16 days, we clocked about 1500 km. The roads were really nice, the drivers (99%) that we encountered were super considerate on the road. This is the only country I thoroughly enjoyed being the sole driver (I have driven in ~30 countries). Car rental is generally inexpensive and the freedom to do what you want whenever you want is priceless. I hope you ladies will enjoy S.A. as much as we did!

I have table mountain, waterfront, aquarium, ratanga junction, game reserve, fruit picking, hout bay, cape good hope, and flying dutchman on my list of musts. Is there anything else I've forgotten? I will google Amakhala. Thanks. Definitely a lot to squeeze in that 5 days :D We did all that in 16 days (minus the Ratanga and Flying Dutchman) but did the ostrich show farm and the white shark cage dunking ahem.... diving. :) ETA try to book rental car that doesn't require advance payment. I usually book the cars and hotels 6 to 8 months in advance if possible. <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 28/02/2012</em>

{5 days is not enough :)} I also second Knysna, an amazing place and one of my favorites! Might be a bit too late in the season to see whales migration. We stayed at The Alexander which is right at the tip of the cliff, to be able to enjoy breakfast and watch whales in the far distance. The game reserve we went to was Amakhala (Port Elizabeth) which we were able to see the great 5. Have fun planning and enjoy your trip!

Try the large electronic stores. I bought mine at Emax a couple of years ago. The brand was Crownline with a 4L container. Well, not that many to choose at the time. I run mine about 15-16 hours a day, and 24/7 if away. Still running ok, and the cost was about 650 Dhs? No need to get anything fancy, and you definitely need to be able to reach into the water container to clean it once in a while (some containers are designed with a small tiny hole for the water to get in and you would need to pour it back out the same way) and be sure you have the option in the back to hook it up to a pipe/garden hose so it will save you the time to pour out the water every time it's full as it will just shut off automatically which becomes useless to you. But it's winter time now, are you still having high humidity currently?

I had long pants and short sleeve top on but brought along a shawl just in case. The breeze did pick up slightly half way through so the shawl was nice to have around, but once it died down, I didn't need it. Yay...I am going to see Mraz too! :)

All the front seating, middle seating and standing areas are all fenced with their own entrances guarded, just not sure if there is direct access to the food concessions on the other side or not (sorry, was not paying attention to that side). If not, may just have to walk the extra hundred meters around to get to the food. No need to pack sandwiches :)

The standing area is the third section from the main stage. The area is quite large, and I saw quite a few people with blankets to lay down on, (even without blankets, the grass was really nice) however, I am not sure if they were able to see the stage or not. There are food stalls/bars to the left of the stage hosted by Intercontinental. Here is the link for the map of the venue http://www.dubaijazzfest.com/venue.html Enjoy!

Where is the best facility/doctor that you would recommend to have screening colonoscopy in Dubai? Hi eclaire, just wondering where you are getting your surgery done. I have never heard of having to keep your eyes closed for 3 days in bed. Generally after LASEK, bandage contact lenses will be placed on your eyes to protect them, and won't be removed for a few more days depending on your progress. Also, what kind of drops did they tell you you need to instill every half hour? That's a bit odd as most medicated drops are needed every 4 to 6 hours. (unless it's artificial tears which may be more frequent but still) typo! <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 19/02/2012</em>

Hi MrsBiju, From Bur Dubai, get on to Sheik Rashid Road toward Wafi. Take exit ramp for route E66 toward Al Ain/Hatta. Continue on this road, and look for route E44 toward Hatta and get on it. As you are approaching Emirates Road 311 in front of you, once you pass under it, stay on right lanes, and you will see a petrol station (I think it's Epco), pass that and take the exit for Dragonmart (you can't miss it, long building on your right). Just follow the signs. Be sure you know where you are parked. Good luck!

As a buyer, it is really not much of a hassle. You just need to get a copy of the registration card from the owner/seller, so that you can go to your insurance to purchase a new policy on it. Then you go to RTA with a copy of insurance policy, the money, your passport&visa copy and Emirates ID copy (just in case) with the owner/seller and fill out a form. As others said, it takes less than an hour to do the transfer of ownership. I do not believe you need to get the car tested if less than 2 years. You will know when you drive up to the window to get a ticket, if you don't need the test, they will tell you to drive pass the testing bay and park in the parking lot to go inside right away.

You can apply for your visa online. It is really hassle free and safe. We used www.vietnamvisapro.com as we read they were inexpensive but professional. We paid via their website $18 for two apps. They sent us a confirmation letter within 48 hours. We printed out the letter to bring with us, $25 per person stamping fee at the airport, and 2 passport photos. We arrived in Hanoi, went to the visa section, handed them the letter and passport, then waiting on the other side of the office, and the whole process was about 5-7 min to pay the stamping fees to get the passports back and proceeded to immigration. My understanding is that if there is car passing under with no tag, it will take a photo of the license plate as it passes. This happened to me before, they couldn't detect the tag, that was in the beginning with a lot of snags to iron out. I have also been told that if a car has no tag or no credits next to a "valid" card, the system can get confused sometimes and charge the "valid" car twice. (At least that's how it was explained to me when I complained of multiple charges simultaneously in one pass).

ideally skirt that is tighter around your hips area to see the movement of your hips, but with lots of flowy fabric below. So something that is figure hugging from neck to hip, and flowy below hip. Shoes should be 1-3 inch heels, avoid strapless heels or sneakers. Make sure they are comfortable for lots of movement. Have a great time!

LOL@inside leg measurement! If the rules hadn't changed since December, here is what you need: 1) Check your registration card for the expiry date. Ideally should go for renewal plus and minus a couple days of your expiry date. The sticker is mainly for the police...... :-) 2) A copy of your new vehicle insurance policy 3) The triangle reflector safety sign (inconsistent check but good to have) 4) Cash (100 for safety inspection + ~350 for new card), some extra cash in case there is a fine for each day past the expiry date 5) check police website to make sure your car does not have outstanding traffic fines 6) Bring your own copy of passport and visa page (just in case) Good luck!

In my experience here, wheel balancing is included in the tire price. Alignment is different and is additional. I know sometimes they tag the alignment cost into the tires and tell you it's included. But still it would not cost 750! Is your steering wheel pulling to the side? If it's stable and stay straight on a straight road, then you can forgo alignment for now. They should have done the balancing on the tires prior to placing them onto your car. typo! <em>edited by Saharagypsyrose on 01/02/2012</em>

I have been pondering about that myself. Still can't get over a lady tearing off a bunch of scallions and then put the green part into her bag which had an intact bunch of scallion in it already. Or another lady digging her finger into a pomegranate to peel off the outer skin wanting to taste the flesh inside and then proceeded to put that aside and pick up the others. I have also seen remnants of apples, oranges, bananas strewing about.

Does any-one know where I could buy a board etc in Dubai maybe just a starter one in case the novelty wears off! Thanks Jo Beware! It's addictive :D If you have FB, you can play Scrabble there. It is quite convenient with electronic dictionary and shuffle feature, and you get to play with your friends and family or strangers online (except US & CA) while you are looking for the traditional board. Give Debenhams a try as most of their beddings are currently on sale. Just bought a duvet cover from there. 550 TC was excellent, didn't buy the sheet sets as I still have an unopened 850 TC from the States. I saw "super king" sizes there too. I second Galle Face Hotel, but be sure to ask for West Wing Regency as it's the renovated wing. Stayed there at least 5 times now. Breakfast buffet is quite good too. Another option is Grand Cinnamon further down on the main road (away from ocean), again make sure you specifically ask for renovated rooms as well.

DS aged 13 has just started a weird blinking and then rolling his eyes up we noticed it when watching tv last night, he doesn't seem bothered about it when we asked him about it. Can anyone recommend an opthalmologist, DH quite concerned. I've heard lots of mixed reviews about eye tests here in Dubai in the mall opticians, so a recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Was this just a one time thing or you have seen him done this before and even he wasn't aware of it? Did you ask him the reason why felt he had to do it (assuming he was aware of it)? In the States, we recommend children under the age of 18 or above the age of 50 to have annual eye examination and in between every 2 years, assuming no existing medical or ocular issues that is. Mall opticians or optometrists (most, not all) here are generally not highly trained and have limited knowledge of conditions or disorders outside of vision and glasses. As the saying goes, there is more to vision than 20/20 (or 6/6 in Metric system). The only few of the pediatric ophthalmologists that I am aware of are Dr. Singh at Welcare, Dr. Sabry at Magrabi, Dr. Roberts at Moorfield. and a couple more I don't remember the names. I personally have no experience working or dealing with these individuals though. Hopefully those who have dealt with them before can give you recommendation. I would just observe to see if he continues with this ocular behavior, and just jot down the frequency and typical time of day or any complaints accompanying this. Having said that, it wouldn't hurt to have his eyes checked if it's been more than a year since his last eye examination. They are at the age where the visual demand is higher with school work (or computer games) :D It's probably nothing serious though, but always good to have it checked out for him and for your peace of mind. Cheers!

You need a no objection letter from the police to copy keys and then take this letter to the key-cutting place (i.e. Minutes), and for this, you need landlord permission. Straightforward, right? :) You're better off just waiting until you go home and do it there. Oh, I thought the police certificate etc only applies to Abu Dhabi? Funny you said that, I actually brought the key with me on holiday and tried to do it in Hong Kong (no luck!), Thailand (no luck!), and Vietnam (no luck!) :(

I believe only the owner/landlord can do that for you, proof of ownership has to be shown to the key making people. If you live in an apartment, sometimes security will sort it for you! Thanks for your reply. I am the said owner :), just needing some extra keys. The development/security is of no help in this matter. The key making people informed me their machines can only duplicate simple single grooved keys and no mention of proof of ownership etc though.
