Parties at home are one thing, Irooni, and I wouldn't have a problem at all. I think most people would over-cater and draw up an extra few chairs at the food table without being upset. What I had a problem with was a catered event at a venue. When parents budget for x amount of kids at AED 50/75/100 a head, having 4 or 5 extras - gatecrashers - bumps the budget up. Not wanting to look after kids a maid is supposed to be taking care of so she can sod off around the mall (and have to pay for the privilege!) is not a lack of hospitality. Expecting to foist kids off onto someone else without asking is rude, pure and simple.

I had heard this too, many moons ago, yet the Prophet's birthday is a day off. I'm trying to think if we got a day off for Sultan Qaboos' birthday in Oman. There was a street named after his birthday which seems a bit celebratory.

Can't find details for the agency who are acting as sponsors so called Amer Service which is mentioned on the visa. Amer Service is a government department. The lady I spoke to asked if it is an online visa (lightbulb moment - the office guy mentioned 'online visa'). She said for that, the info I was given is correct and he just needs to present his copy. She did say however, if there's a problem the sponsor should attend with the original. Fingers crossed there's no problem, then.

When we've arranged visas for him in the past we've got the office guy (kind-of-PRO) to drop them at the airport the day before. He's now saying there's no need, just present the copy. It's been arranged through a travel agency so maybe they deposit the original at the airport. I guess I should see if I can get contact details for them and check with them. ETA, DH's company moved from one Free Zone to another so this is the first time a travel agency has been used. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 08/03/2011</em>

If you want to keep it, stay here and keep your job could you ust have a quickie civil ceremony somewhere to cover the legalities and then have a 'proper' wedding at a later date when the time feels better? Congratulations, by the way ;)

Freckles, I think it depends on the type of party who's invited. When we, as parents, know each other then we'll all be there anyway. I took exception when DD had kids from her class invited who I didn't know, and who's parents and siblings I certainly didn't know and their siblings were just slotted into line for food. I've also had to take DS when he was small and like you, I've squared it with the hostess first. I simply wouldn't dream of shoving him into a party he's not invited to, where I don't know the parents, and buggering off expecting someone else to foot the bill [b'>and [/b'>take care of him.

When we've done a party at home it's taken as read that siblings of family friends will come as the family friends will be there too. The only time siblings has been an issue was when I had an organised party for DD at MoE - movie and meal. Before the movie the kids had to line up to tell a staff member their choice of meal for after the movie before going into the movie theatre.. A few maids showed up with the invitees plus siblings and shoved the siblings into the line. I removed them from the line and told the maids that if they wanted the siblings to eat and watch the movie they would have to pay themselves, it wasn't going on my bill. I got filthy looks but as they were just trying to palm their charges off onto me for the afternoon I couldn't give a s***.

I've had my card stopped recently, and rightly so - it was for a (small) transaction that was not mine. When I've been issued with a new card I've had a few calls from the bank to verify transactions. Some websites won't process an order where the two addresses don't match.

I was a big supporter of the RNLI when we were in the UK; my Dad goes to sea regularly. I make a donation to Cancerbackup (now merged with Macmillan nurses) every year on the anniversary of my Stepnan's death. I also support local animal charities and more recently I'm hoping to support a charity which concerns itself with helping take care of babies in prison with their mothers as well as buying air tickets for people who have completed prison sentences who cannot afford tickets.

Buying goods in the UK or US and having them delivered to Shop & Ship means that items are delivered to a UK/US address with a UAE billing address. I've just used my UAE credit card to have Amazon send stuff to my Mum's address in the UK.

Maybe it's by mutual agreement where the maid gets another day off in lieu, and is happy to work. Maybe she gets a bonus too. You can't assume that every person bringing a maid is someone who makes the maid work on her time off regularly, or for no compensation.

Sorry but it's not legal to employ someone who is not sponsored by you or an agency. The fines for getting caught are pretty steep too. I use an agency (different emirate) but I get the same lady every time.

I think it's bl**dy awful but if those are your two windows to arrive I would go for April simply because I wouldn't want to arrive in the middle of Ramadan when government offices are on reduced hours possibly causing huge delays to you getting through all the red tape.

I don't know. When I was in Dubai Cedars closest to me but I still decided that if it was a real, SERIOUS emergency I would head for Rashid. Up here in the Wild West we have a hospital very much like the American where we go for general stuff - healthcare checks, orthodontics, GP type issues, but if it was serious, serious I'd head to the government hospital next door.

Rashid Hospital or Al Wasl in an Emergency ( severe ) City Hospital ( in general ). We've had 2 situations where admission has been necessary and both times the staff were faultless. SH edited by sleepyhead on 06/03/2011 Agreed. I asked my GP and he told me the above. DH got taken to American hospital after a motorbike accident; what a shower of .... that was. OK for broken arms and cut forehead type of emergencies but for the 'real' stuff I'd want Rashid which is where he was supposed to have benn taken except the ambulance book for the event took a wrong turn and couldn't find its way there...

I'm not surprised. The security guard won't have vehicle insurance you can claim from so it has to come from your insurance. It's like hitting a wall or a post - your insurance has to pay as no other vehicle was involved. It might be worth contacting the security company, as others have said, or lodging a complaint with the police, to see if you can get some (at least) of the costs covered. OP said that the company require a court decree stating that they have sole financial responsibility. That would make it a bit more complicated, assuming the company know that the child has a different biological father.
