For us it was the lack or privacy. We had to be aware at all times that someone else could walk in. I guess it's not so bad if you have a lockable door between their room and the house but our maid's room was in the house.

I had to fax them a copy of my UK passport before they unblocked me (don't know what that proves except that I'm a British poassport holder). If you have a VPN, set it to the UK and you can download content to your computer then transfer it to your Kindle.

doesnt work for someone who was born in this millenium though ... DS born in 2006 ... turns 5 this year ... so 06+5=11 and not 111 it's the same principle and will still work (albeit 11 not 111) for all those born...... nothing strange at all just a simple equation. Year of birth + age = current year..... I was born in 1980 and am 30. 1980 + 30 = 2010 :) no birthday this year? at the end of the year, you will be 31. 31+1980 = 2011 (damn your young) :( But it doesn't have the same ring if you have to add "But it only works AFTER you've had your birthday" does it? LOL! (And you're younger than me, Izzy :()

Hugs to you, Shazman. We had to have our beautiful dog put to sleep on Monday and I can't believe how much I miss him. Pets fill a much bigger hole than you realise. I don't know why I joined EW, it was years ago. It would have been for info but I can't remember if there was a specific piece of info I wanted.

I am furious at the developer Nakheel. They only want to allow us ONE hour for snagging (it is a 2 BR house!!!) and already stated that they will only allow the owner to be there for the snagging. It is very obvious they have something do hide, dont you think so??? That's not just specific to Nakheel. We had the same conditions imposed on us by a different developer, but for a 4 br villa. We spotted lots more faults after the snagging was done (those that they bothered to do) and are getting them back to do the rest before the year is up.

Not just a craft fair, the Exiles (motorcycle group) will be heading up there from Abu Dhabi and there will be food and entertainment for the kids. Proceeds go to RAK Animal Welfare Centre. It should be a great day and I hope you can find someone to go with you :)

When being bull****ted (by my ex), my ex's ex used to say, "You must think I button up the back!" I love that.

Emirates Road for sure. I guess between 6.30am and 9 would be the busiest time, but the traffic is heading south in the morning so heading north is not too bad. Not tried it in the evening but at lunchtime the traffic is fine. Of course, this in in normal circumstances. An accident could change all that.

Probably an Urban Legend but I wouldn't be surprised if a new (maid) arrival had heard about maids getting extra for 'seeing to sir' when ma'am has a headache and asked about it up front without thinking.

It's a long-running joke. I *think* someone asked a similar question to the OP and someone else posted the list but forgot to remove their DH/DS's name (Alex) from the list so the generic list always had the line "Polish Alex's shoes". It's been doing the rounds for aaaaaages! Someone else said they suspected their maid and DH of polishing each others shoes which I took to be tongue in cheek.

and who will learn me how to drive in the desert? :-) or is it just practicing and practicing? Ride with someone who can teach you then follow them; or take a course. Don't just go out and think "This looks easy" and drive. It's not and you can get yourself in all sorts of trouble if you don't know what you're doing. Never go alone. We have a Prado and a Jeep Wrangler. Both are very capable vehicles in the desert. As for Audis, are you thinking of the Q7? IF so, they are quite a low vehicle with not as much ground clearance as the Patrols/Landcruisers/Pajeros etc. You are likely to get high-centred (stuck) on the top of a dune if you don't have a decent clearance. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 20/01/2011

I use Skype on my iPhone that was bought over in the UAE. I don't recall having to do anything special. This is when I'm at home in range of wireless internet, not tried it on the mobile phone network though.

Oh 'eck, now you're asking! All I can remember is that it was in a shop on the main drag through DM (not down one of the side alleys). It was a shop that sold mostly strings of freshwater pearls and the boxes of Love Pearls were in the window. Not much help - sorry!

Just to add, the family fun day will be featuring the Abu Dhabi Exiles. [i'>We are holding a Family Fun Day on 21st January 2011 on the Zahara Terrace of Al Hamra Golf Club. Details are under "EVENTS" on our http://ras-al-khaimah.ning.com/ website. We have some very special guests coming to the Family Fun Day all the way from Abu Dhabi, they are the "Exiles" We were very excited when they accepted our invitation to come and join us on the 21st. Can't wait to see their Harley Davidson's and other bikes and to meet them :) Here is some information about them: The Exiles is a motorcycle club based in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. We currently have over thirty active members of fourteen different nationalities riding all brands and types of bike. Exiles MC was formed in 2004 when the original members split form the local Harley Owners Group to form a club that was not affiliated to any manufacturer, could make its own rules and select its own membership. They run weekly rides all year round plus several bigger annual rides and parties including the famous 7 Emirates Ride. A non-profit organisation, the club works to promote safe motorcycling in the UAE, and to run various charitable events each year. As well as joining various topical awareness events, Exiles MC makes a cash donation each year to a local charity and organises annual Toy Runs, bringing donated toys to children in hospitals and orphanages. The Craft Fair which starts at 10am will be there all day, if anyone would like to book a table please email me at [email protected] the fee per table is 50 dirhams all fees will go to RAWC (RAK Animal Welfare Centre) an animal sanctuary which is funded by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah with the patronage of His Highness, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. Since opening, the people running it and the volunteers have been doing an amazing job of caring for the cats and dogs, getting them vaccinated, rabies shots and spayed or neutered before offering them for adoption to loving families, all of this costs so every little helps to support Terri (the Veterinary Doctor) and her team. We are hoping to collect more donations for them at the Family Fun Day and if any of you have any blankets and toys that are no longer wanted and are suitable for the cats and dogs to play with can you please bring them along as there will be a table for RAWC there, thank you all so much. There will also be some entertainment for the children plus a hotdogs and popcorn stand. For London/UK check out the Marie Stopes website. They carry out vasectomies there and give loads of info online. Just be aware that they strongly advise against flying long-haul less than 7 days after the procedure.

Contrary to all the advice below, I think you should consider leaving him if you don't have children yet. If things are this bad now, they will only get much, much worse when you do have kids. Then it will be harder to leave him and the kids will suffer. I'm glad my DH didn't give up on me so easily! I prefer Green-ish's advice and think the OP should at least give him the chance to help himself. If he can get the help and lift himself out of this now he might be able to prevent things getting this bad in the future.
