I've also heard bad news although I can't verify it. I really hope it's not the case.

Last thing: do not go for long summer vacation leaving him here, when he have vacation arrange yours to be with him, men in that particular like children; if you are not around them they tend to do mischief. If the trust has disintegrated to a level where the OP can't even leave him on his own, what is the point of the relationship at all?

Letting the person with only one or two items go through the checkout ahead of me. Bringing out a bottle of drink for the car-washer in the hot weather, even though he hasn't washed my car. Paying for the groceries of labourers behind me in the checkout queue during Ramadan.

I'm with LT on this one. Chicken Pox isn't just "one of those childhood illnesses". It's far more serious than I was ever led to believe and I only realised just how serious it can be in the last 10 years. I do sympathise with the inconvenience it can cause you though.

I've been wearing the same Tag Heuer for nearly 10 years. I'd dearly love a new watch but I can't find one that I like that is also waterproof and has the date. I have an old Rolex pocket watch that my Dad gave me.

It all sounds like a power struggle to me. She won't go. She'll have to look for another job. Ok, she will go, but for 1 month, not 2. She's not the one paying the salary here, there's no negotiation. She goes with you for the time you want her there, or she finds another job. Sorry she's being such a pain.

We paid MYR 180 (approx AED 200) for a pre-booked taxi from Petronas Towers to the airport.

Doesn't really surprise me. Just because people pay to get their housework done, doesn't mean it's done properly. I have all my cloths colour-coded (with pictures in the cleaning tools bucket) to show what cloths get used for what as I prefer not to have my cleaners wiping inside the toilet then shining the taps with the same cloth. Many people aren't too hot on hygiene, especially hand-washing, either.

Does she get annual leave as well as this trip to Europe? As this is still work, albeit easy, maybe he disagrees with her not having her own time off if this trip is combined with her annual leave. If she still gets the time off she's entitled to then he's being unreasonable to dictate what she does and doesn't do when she's working.

when i lived in Saudi you used to see people smoking in supermarkets..... I remember when they smoked in the malls in Dubai It wasn't that long ago was it? 2009 or 2010 they stopped it? I used to hate that any item of clothing you bought new stuck of smoke.

RAK was a year or two behind Dubai in banning smoking in Malls so I was happy when it did happen. However a couple of coffee shops in Manar Mall - Starbucks being one of them - are allowing people to smoke in them (inside the mall, not outside). A real step backwards.

Again, I've been asked in Canada (and Germany, but only once in Germany). I didn't get asked entering the US. I never get asked entering or leaving the UAE but I guess if a person is worried it would do no harm to carry a letter just in case.

You have to use approved routes and approved companies to bring animals in, regarding which method you use - air, rail, ferry. The info is on DEFRA's website (scroll down to "approved routes and transport companies" https://www.gov.uk/pet-travel-information-for-pet-owners#routes-and-transport-companies

Take comfort; I'm in the UK right now. Last night I got tailgated by a van (Ford Transit, for my fellow Britishers ;) ). Once he passed me he gave me the "merchant banker" hand signal because I couldn't quite do the national speed limit of 60mph (~100kph) down narrow, unlit, unfamiliar country roads. There are a-holes everywhere :)

We were overlooking Burj Khalifa. Traffic was gridlocked around the Murooj Rotana, Al Khail end of the D71, SZR around "Defence roundabout" (don't know what it's called now) and the road behind Mazaya Centre until well after the fireworks had all finished.

We're looking at a Lego Technic set. It's AED 1629 (US$ 443). On Amazon.com it costs $294 and would cost $ 53 to ship with Shop & Ship, so nearly $100 saving. On Lego.com it's $220 (but they won't ship to box numbers which rules out S&S) or internationally. If you put the street address in address line 1 and the po box in address line 2 they recognise it as a street address not a po box. I get sets shipped out from lego.com all the time to my s&s US account. I've bought sets for $39.99 not on sale that retail here for dhs 750! edited by starsouthern on 29/12/2013 Argh I wish I'd come back to this thread sooner! :D

Ok, I'm not sure if there are companies operating from RAK but companies will collect from RAK, hotels in particular. They won't be in "Jeeps" though, but bigger 4x4 vehicles.

What do you mean by "Jeep safari"? Do you have a Jeep and want to take a trip in the desert with other Jeeps/4x4s (or only Jeeps...), or a pre-organised trip where you are a passenger? Or something else entirely?

You do realise she's taking you for an absolute fool, don't you? You need to decided what are your rules (fairly), spell them out to her and make her stick to them. Tell her if she doesn't like it she can leave (she knows she'll be hard pressed to find better - unless you're paying her a pittance, but I doubt it) and you'll find someone else. Have you finished processing her visa yet?

I do hate the rain, this I must confess, The dust in the air, rain makes such a mess. If I watch from indoors then I guess that's just fine But caught out in the rain, it just makes me whine I so hate the feel of my clothes when they're wet, I really don't like it, it just makes me fret.

The old fishing village, as mentioned by ChocolateQueen is worth a visit. There are a lot of very old burial sites north of RAK city, Queen of Sheba's palace (built a couple of thousand years after she died...) and Al Dhaya Fort on the E18 towards Musandam is great, although the climb to the top might be a bit much for the older members.

The old Corniche on the creek is nice for a wander. There's parking right along the length and the creek itself is lovely - mangroves and birds. There is an Italian restaurant, Costa Coffee and Baskin Robbins along the creek too, all overlooking the water.
