Sort of.... You get given several addresses such as China, UK, US, Turkey, India. For example, if you order something from Amazon.com (the US website) you input your US Shop and Ship address (a New York address). Amazon, or the supplier, will send the item to your NY S&S address and you will have to pay any delivery charges applicable to get it there. S&S will then forward the item on to you in the UAE charging AED 43 for the first 0.5kg then AED 34 for each extra 0.5kg. Always check the shipping weight if you can - S&S charges can often make it cheaper to buy here in the UAE.

Wolfi's have great quality bikes, but they're expensive. If your child might outgrow it in a year or so then it might not be worth it. I got son's first bike at Toys R Us (but watch out if you buy one with gears; they're all twist shift and were all extremely hard to twist) and the second from Centrepoint. Both lasted a few years. We've just bought his third one from the Ride shop in MCC. More expensive but better quality and will (hopefully) do him for a good few years.

If your vehicle doesn't need inspection you can do it online. You won't get your sticker and card, of course, but you will have confirmation that you've done it.

Whereabouts r u? I lived KL for several years...doesn't normally last long but can be spectacular storms. *shrugs* Dunno :D I can see the KL Tower and apparently Petronas Towers are behind the hotel. We could see a storm as we were coming in to land.

Mariu's restaurant at the north end of Copacabana. It's really expensive but oh my god! What an experience. And if visiting the Christ the Redeemer statue is a childhood ambition you never thought you'd get the chance to realise, don't knock yourself flat on Caipirinhas the night before :/

Just spoken to the embassy. She said their instruction is minimum 6 months from date of entry, but basically said it's up to me if I want to take the risk :S

I read that there is this new deal with Shop and Ship whereby you can bring in cosmetics for an extra $10 fee. I have not used it myself, but it might solve your problem... I was on live chat with them a while back and was told they would't ship cream eyeshadows or mascara *sigh*

Could you not ask your insurance company? They should know, shouldn't they? No. We had a friend visit earlier this year and asked our insurance company if he could drive his vehicle and they said yes. I sent a copy of his licence and all the details they asked for and got a certificate with his name added to it. Even so, I found out that this doesn't mean much if the police decide he shouldn't be driving. This is what one of the managers at AXA later told me in an email when I discovered that we should never have been able to add our friend to our insurance: [i'>I wanted to immediately let you know AXA’s position with regard to additional drivers who do not hold a UAE licence, and to offer you assurance that I will take this forward with the staff involved. With regards to the driver, I’m afraid that this is a very grey area. The key message is that as long as the police at the time of an accident say the driver without a UAE licenice is covered, then AXA will cover in the event of a claim. My emphasis is on the words at the time of an accident. So, if the police decide should an accident occur that the driver should not have been driving, then AXA will not cover. AXA cannot and should not add any named driver to a policy where they do not hold a UAE licence. It may well help for you to get a letter from the RTA confirming that the driver is ok to drive, however this would be more for your peace of mind and something to evidence to the police in the unfortunate event that something happens. Very simply, the decision about whether we cover would be down to what the police attending an accident decide, and AXA cannot offer you any assurance or guarantees about this.[/i'> <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 07/10/2013</em>

This website (linked from RoSPA) http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/choosing/fitting.htm says "It's safer to fit child seats in the rear of the car, but if necessary they can be fitted in the front. But, NEVER fit a rearward-facing baby seat in the front if there is an airbag on the passenger side of the car. If the airbag went off it would strike the seat with considerable force." So it doesn't say it's perfectly safe, but doesn't say it should never be done either.

Yeah, I don't feel as comfortable as I would in a home country but we've been living in our own place for over 3 years now and we don't miss all the renting dramas. If we'd been looking at short-term we'd have made a huge mistake but we've taken the decision to stay a few more years so for us it'll hopefully have been a good decision.

I believe the age limit is 14. As Egg says, Moorfields is recommended, and also Gulf Eye Centre in the Fairmont hotel. I have no experience of Moorfields but I've taken my son to the Gulf Eye Centre and have been happy. I would very much doubt you could just turn up. You might be lucky but I wouldn't take the chance. Make an appointment, you probably won't have to wait very long to be seen anyway.

I think it depends if you are planning to live in it or rent it out, and if you regard it as a long-term plan. Rents are much lower than Dubai here so the returns aren't so great. If you plan to live in in for years then I *think* it wouldn't be a bad idea. I tried to sell mine without success (not in Al Hamra but not far away) but I would hope the markets will be picking up soon. I would buy as a home, not as an investment - personally. People are generally pretty happy living in RAK.

Doesn't answer my fees question, but I just called the RTA in Dubai. They said I can do all the transfer at a Federal traffic place in Dubai and get my transfer certificate. They will deal with sending the plates back to Dubai and issuing new plates to the new owner (if he needs them). If the transfer was done in Dubai however, the vehicle would have to be moved up to RAK (or wherever) on a transporter as it will not have plates (and I did read that you can't get Dubai export plates to move inter-emirate).
