I know and I've been in a pet shop and seen my favourite breed in there. It breaks my heart to have to leave them there and follow logic, ie not buy and feed the demand. It's still so tough because there isn't a clear cut answer.

It boils my blood that people can get away with this. To be honest I'm glad you can't buy her. By "rescuing" her from the pet shop you are creating demand and giving them reason to ship in another puppy mill dog. I don't know what the answer is though :(

Friday brunch at the Al Hamra Fort Hotel. There is a non-alcoholic package if you prefer not to drink, great food and free use of the beach and pool.

Exactly Anon. It's hard to explain that what you see so many other people wearing isn't the done thing. Or hard to make them understand, at any rate. Or do I just mind my own business and let her face the consequences herself? I told my nephew (a grown man) that I would not take him to MOE in shorts (they were Bermuda length) during Ramadan. He went and put his jeans on....... If they are staying n your house then it s your rules. They're staying in a property of mine, but not my home. Sakhifa, I guess that's right. She's an adult after all and I have told her what's considered acceptable dress in public. What she chooses to do with that advice is now up to her I guess. I just feel that I'd be embarrassed to be with her if she does get in some kind of trouble.

SD you are really asking this question after all these years on this forum and living in the ME? (It's not even thursday yet!) Yes I am really asking this question. I know it's inappropriate, hence my use of the word in the title, and I know what is appropriate (see my comment where I mentioned knees and shoulders covered). What I don't know is what the penalties are, if any, ie arrest, warning fine etc. As I've said, I've advised what appropriate clothing is, but can't add more weight without knowing the facts, hence the question. The person is an adult, how can I forbid it? Houseguest isn't strictly true, I was too lazy to explain in OP. I'm doing the Harcombe diet. It's in 3 phases. Phase 1 allows you only decaf drinks, no alcohol, no dairy (except natural live yoghurt), no fruit, no wheat..... Actually, it's easier to list what you can have: decaf tea or coffee, water, NLY, veg, salad, meat, fish in unlimited quantities and 50g dry weight of brown rice. It's designed to get rid of your cravings and starve Candida in your body (which she believes causes sugar cravings). For me it worked and I went to a coffee morning today and didn't touch any of the sweet stuff. I don't have a lot of interest in it either. The first 3 days were SO hard! I'm on phase 2 now which allows some fruit, some alcohol, dairy, caffeinated tea and coffee and wheat. And other stuff which I forgot. But there are rules about what you can and can't mix. Dear Shelbo, I'm sure you'll get some good advice on here but in the meantime we've a guide to like in RAK that may help http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_faqs HTH Although I would hardly call RAK Academy presitigious :D You can't search for RAK on here but you can search for RAK* (has to be 4 characters min.) Yes, RAK Academy is the only British school in RAK (it's also the only IB school in RAK). I have one in IB primary which is fine and one in secondary which is not fine. I've heard very good things about the BC campus. There are two main gated communities - Al Hamra Village and Mina Al Arab. Rents for townhouses can be from 60k and for villas, 100k. Prices for properties outside these, ie in local areas are VERY cheap. For what you're asking, one of the two above sounds perfect. AHV has a few pools and play areas. The beach and Al Hamra Mall (with Spinneys) may be walking distance or a short drive away depending on where in the community you are located. In MAA all villas or townhouses are within a very short walk from the beach, pool or play area. There is no shop yet but a Choithram is due to open within MAA in a few months. There are two Carrefours and a LuLu in RAK. Plenty of expats in RAK :)

Indeed, if you can possibly avoid government offices, do so :) Getting a licence through MMI is easy if you have all the correct paperwork. The application form comes with all the information you need.

MMI and A&E won't issue the licence but they will do everything for you. They hold the forms for you to fill in. You hand it in to MMI or A&E, they will send it to whichever govt. department deals with it, and you collect from them again when the licence is ready. Be sure to tell your friend, it will save them time having to visit the government office (and of course, one would need to make sure they applied at the correct government office).

How much of that building is the Wladorf and how much is the Palace/Casa hotel? We went for brunch at the Casa (it was not good, we left and went back to the Al Hamra brunch instead) and it didn't look particularly posh. Both the Waldorf and the Casa are showing the whole building on their websites.

Most people in UAQ are in Mistral Villas, they have a Facebook page. From there you have the choice of schooling on RAK or in Sharjah. I'd choose Sharjah.

You are not required to show a licence to purchase alcohol in RAK which is why I think most people believe there's no such thing a a RAK licence (which is why 99% of cars in The Cellar's car park have Dubai plates lol!) The guys in MMI confirmed to me that it does indeed exist.

I had to sign 21 times (no I'm not lying) before a lady at a bank was satisfied with my signature :D That deserves a diet coke with brazilian lime. That deserved fresh lobster! Thing is, if I wasn't me, she gave me plenty of time to practice and perfect the signature I was trying to forge. It's not a good thing when you can't even replicate your OWN signature.

Shopping.....hmmmm..... For day-to-day stuff there's a Spinneys in Al Hamra mall with another opening soon in the centre. There's Manar Mall with a Carrefour and Safeer Mall also with a smallish Carrefour. RAK Mall has LuLu but not much else (it does have Second Cup though.) For clothes, shoes, gifts etc we tend to head to Dubai. For social life, it depends what you want. There isn't the huge choice of bars, restaurants, clubs etc that you get in Dubai but there is the Al Hamra Fort hotel, Banyan Tree, Hilton City, Hilton beach resort & spa, Hilton Doubletree, Cove Rotana so there are restaurants in those, as well as a few other places. There are clubs in a few hotels but I've never been so don't know what they're like. There's Al Hamra Golf Club and Tower Links Golf Club, the latter has live bands and quiz nights. During the day there are various things going on. Dress code is knees and shoulders covered and, as in Dubai, it does get flouted. A higher percentage of local women are completely covered than in Dubai so it's a more conservative feel out and about. Housing is cheaper. In the gated communities it's about 65-85k for a townhouse and about 100 upwards for a villa. I know someone who has a small two-bed out of a compound and pays 25k a year.

It depends what sort of lifestyle you want. It's not Dubai, that's for sure so won't suit mall rats or people who want a fast pace of life. It's very laid-back and relaxed, but still with a fair amount to do. There's a nice expat community with regular coffee mornings to get to know people. There are various classes running and volunteer groups. Is there anything in particular you want to know?

I had a lovely hairdresser in Dubai who would on'y rough dry my hair after highlights and trim (and not charge me for it) because she said "You'll only go home and tie it back straight away". She was 100% right too :D Sorry, for not answering your question OP, but I know it feels awkward, especially if you know the hairdresser. If I don't know them, I have no problem saying no.
