Not unless we are related? Though anything is possible! :-P I have packed extra supplies. Am secretly a little concerned at shamals etc in the middle of the desert? Where are they going, anyway? Is it Liwa? Weeeeelllll.....we have a bit in common..... ;) They are starting near the seven's ground but the final destination had not been divulged - which is normal. There are 750 vehicles taking part which sounds like a recipe for distaster which is why our desert toy is staying firmly put this weekend :D

We moved to RAK from Bahrain in November.... We live in Al Hamra village .. Got to agree if you like the quiet lifestyle you'll like living in RAK.. We have settled in and love the quiet life in RAK..(I do still miss Bahrain but its early days). We visit Dubai once a fortnight . Been to 2 coffee mornings this week and meet some lovely ladies ... I have also heard that RAK hospital is very GOOD. Wonderful, wonderful ladies. Especially this morning :D (I'm the one who took your number and will see you next Weds ;) )

Sorry OP but this question is off topic. Sandy do you have any idea when Choithrams will open in Mina? I asked security they have no idea. TIA. I think I heard this month, but that'll never happen. It's going in building 18 and I haven't walked past there for a while so I don't know if there's been any progress. I'll maybe take a walk tomorrow morning and report back :)

Yep :D RAK Hospital is a private hospital (right next door to Saqr Hospital which is govt. run). That's where most expats go, including us.

Al Hamra mall is a real disappointment. I've heard that the rental charges for vendors are prohibitively high, therefore putting off decent shops. A lot of people do live in Al Hamra despite there being a lot of empty houses. There's quite the community there. There are a couple of playgrounds and swimming pools in Al Hamra. The marina is just setting up a sailing school, there's another sailing club near the Hilton Beach and there are various activities such as martial arts, tennis, football etc etc that go on after school for kids, and all sorts of fitness classes, hobbies and coffee mornings for adults. There are other areas/communities to live too, such as Mina Al Arab, Palm Village and Granadas 1,2 & 3. Granadas 1 & 3 are miles from each other - no idea where Granada 2 is :D

There's a rumour of a new school being built, but no sign of it so far. Otherwise there's just RAK Academy. I have kids in PYP Primary and Secondary. I have no problems with Primary (and have heard good reports about the BC Primary Campus) but I'm far from happy with the Secondary school. There's RAK American Academy for Girls (RAKAAG) but there's very little 'American' about it.

I tried to make an appointment with Dr Grimm but she was fully booked so took an appointment with the other lady there (damn, I can't remember her name). She's American and I think her name begins with J. Although not classified as a paediatric ophthalmologist, she was wonderful with my 8 year old DS. She was very thorough and really connected with him. ETA, although paediatric, she's still a proper ophthalmologist. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 07/01/2013</em>

I love the early starts :D ETA the reason I have to get up so early is because the bus comes at 6.50am, and that's the one thing I don't like about it - not the getting up early but that the kids are on the bus for 45 mins. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 07/01/2013</em>

Yes you can, and if you take Teveten 600 I have two unopened boxes I don't need going cheap. I stocked up for my travels at Christmas (forgot to take them with me to N America last year and ended up with a huge medical bill to get a prescription) but my doc changed me to a different type just before I left.

Any gynaecologist will do the test. Opinion varies as to what age one should start having tests, but I believe all sexually active women should be tested, according to info I've received over the years. Since I posted this a friend has said it's a St. Andrew's Cross spider, which seems to be the case. The way the spider 'sits' plus the zig-zag web all tie in with what I see online. Although it can bite it's not venomous - thank goodness!

I wondered if it's a female because the one underneath was lacking things like a body and head so wondered if it was an unfortunate male. Please read up on St. John's Wort first. It can interfere with antidepressants and reduce the efficiency of the contraceptive pill (if either of these are applicable) as well as reducing the effects of other medicines. I wish I could offer advice as another person who rarely sleeps properly :(

Oh god yes, The Hangover! I thought it was funny but not the funniest film I'd ever seen - until the photographs at the end - I cried with laughter. I thought the same about The Hangover 2. I thought it was funny but didn't think it could end as well because there was no element of surprise with the photos at the end. Wrong, it was hilarious :D

It's off the Khawaneej road (D89 I think). Heading away from Dubai, you turn just past the Municipality vets. There are some stables there (can't remember then name, sorry) and Posh Paws petting place is there.

1.5 hours is probably the right amount of time to allow. Personally I would hire a driver, but then I hate driving. How old are your kids? Will they need to go to school? At present there is only one international school in RAK. The primary is fine; secondary, not so much - I'm not impressed. There is a school that comes recommended on here (can't remember the name) close to the Sharjah/Ajman border which could be an option but would also add to your commute time if you'd be doing the drop-off.

If it's tiny holes about waist high, it's most likely your clothes getting snagged on the side of your marble kitchen countertop. That was my thought but I've had this problem for 5 or 6 years and in 3 different houses. Mine always get holes about waist height at the front (checked for belt snagging but it's not that.) DS's underpants get them in the bum part :)

There's a saying "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar" It's true. You're more likely to get your point across being calm and polite than you are screaming at each other. When you're shouting at him it's hostile and aggressive. He's probably not even listening to what you're trying to say (shout) but is busy formulating a witty/cutting response in his head. It's more difficult to shout, scream and be hostile to someone's who's calmly stating their point. If you're being calm and he's shouting, don't retaliate. Wait until he's stopped ranting then speak calmly. If he insists on shouting, wait until he's finished (or draws breath :) ) and tell him you will only discuss when he's calmed down. Be prepared to do the same.
