I prefer gas, but after years of cooking on bottled gas in the Middle East, I agree with the others. This villa has built in electric hob and oven. I hated the electric hob so we pulled that out and replaced with a gas hob, leaving the electric oven. Like the others have said, it's a good combination. However, if meant having to have a gas cylinder inside the house, apartment etc then I'd stick with all electric.

I took DS to Gulf Eye Centre today and he saw Dr. Janice. I can't praise her highly enough. She's warm and great with kids as well as being very thorough - she picked up something that went undetected previously. Thanks Sanddy_Dogg for feedback. Dr Janice is not listed on the Gulf Eye Centre website (same as Dr Grim?). Is she a paediatric opthalmologist? Both DS and DH needs appointments, just wondering which one for each? No, she's not - I looked for her too. I couldn't get an appointment with Dr. Grim as she is very busy and because DS needed to be seen as a matter of urgency I accepted an appointment with Dr Janice. She's not listed as a paediatric ophthalmologist but the way she spoke mainly to my 8 year old DS (with back up from me) and the way she interacted with him was reassuring. She asked lots of questions and did a huge range of tests and came to a result that was missed elsewhere but seems to fit the symptoms. DS even said that if he has to see and "xraymologist" (poor mite's had a week of it with chest x-rays and blood tests too) that he wants to see her again. Her next patient was an adult so I'd recommend her to anyone.

Yes, I took DS to see him, he's lovely :) Seems to be very thorough and has a nice way about him. He couldn't find anything wrong with DS's eyes but DS still complains. He complains that his eyes ache. Several times when this has happened (including today) he's vomited so i'm wondering if he has migraines. Any recommendations for a really good paediatrician would be very much appreciated. I'm going to backtrack on this. I took DS to see Dr. Janice At Gulf Eye Centre today and she picked up that DS actually DOES have a problem. She was very, very thorough and did a whole battery of tests over two visits an hour or so apart. In total we had about an hour and a half of her time. I wont say City Hospital aren't good and are probably fine for regular vision tests but if you suspect a problem I can't recommend Dr. Janice highly enough.

I suppose its eco-friendly, but I don't think they are doing it to save trees but rather to try and be unique and interesting. Maybe to save money too. You haven't met my FIL have you? :D

I'm a firm believer in Japanese cars here. Wouldn't consider anything else Agree. My 8 year old Prado still trots along and still cools the whole interior in no time at all.

I would leave at 7am for a 9am trip but I live in RAK. Personally I would leave more time. It's about 45 mins from the roundabout at the end of emirates road to the border and about the same the other side. That doesn't take into account time spent exiting the uae and entering Oman.

Do your research. The iPhone 5 takes a nano SIM instead of the micro SIM of its predecessors so you need to be sure that you can get one here from either provider. Also, as yet, the UAE is not on Apple's list of countries supporting LTE so although the phone would work, check to see how well it will work without the LTE network. It could be a waste of money if you can't use all the features properly. http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

I no longer have a maid so I might be a bit out of date. With regards to money instead of ticket I think you need to explain upfront that money isn't an option. Don't be upset about them asking as many truly would prefer the money. My last maid had grown-up children and a husband who were all in the UAE - she really didn't have any need or desire to go home and the money was far more useful to her. P/T work is an absolute no. I have had this request and it was a flat NO. I explained it was illegal and I am not prepared for a huge fine because my maid wants to moonlight. Threats of immediate deportation plus a ban should make your message clear. I believe 2k is more than enough for them to pay for their food etc. I did not pay extra for overtime. I did not pay extra for anything, I made my expectations clear from the start. If I thought a late night babysitting would be required timed off before and after would be given. I'd give extra time off here and there if she'd gone the extra mile (without being asked). Crying? Not a chance. As for the day off, I was pretty liberal with my maid but she was very trustworthy as she proved time and time again. The thing with allowing them to go to AD means you are opening the door for them missing their bus or car-lift and not getting home until half way through the next day. for me that would be a no to start with, and to reviewed at a later date.

Stay on the E611 right until the very end (as ShellFC says, it's now extended). At the end, go straight over the roundabouts which will take you underneath the E311/Emirates road. You'll cross desert, straight over a few roundabouts until you come to a roundabout with a weird metal structure where you can only turn left or right - turn right. You'll see a tatty old plane and Dreamland water park on your right after about 5km. Take the next u-turn. It's just after Dreamland once you've done the u-turn. Once you've gone under E311 observe the speed limit signs - the cameras do work!

RAK Hospital (private) would be a good place to start. Many, or most, of their staff do split shifts so would work mornings and evenings. Tell her to check out their website, all the doctors/specialists are listed there.

Vera, There is a shelter in RAK too. All their dogs are neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. They have a team of staff to give basic training to the dogs too.
