Yes. Our boss sent an email round to all staff informing us that his deputy would be the point of contact while he (the boss) was away on holiday. I made a very insulting remark about the deputy and instead of forwarding it to my colleague I sent it back to the boss.

I have to agree with Chocs. Either ignore, tell him to do it himself or ask if he meant to sound so rude. Then walk away. Don't engage in an argument and don't apologise if you've done nothing to apologise for. However, I feel this might be a lost cause.

I was in the UAQ community last weekend. The villas are lovely - very big and very cheap (mostly because the community is still pretty isolated). The people I know there all love it, but they all do work full-time. Despite the name of Umm Al Quwain Marina, the entire development is surrounded by sand, not water :) If you search for Umm Al Quwain Marina on Google Earth, what comes up is not the development; the development itself is east of the location shown on google earth and looks like a dark square with a road leading into the bottom left hand corner of the square.

You might be able to find people to car pool with or hire a driver between you. Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab have their own beaches which are clean and sandy. There are public beaches too but I don't have a lot of experience of them.

Not sure if you can buy whole rolls but I think ACE sells bubble wrap. I got rolls from Blue Bird Packaging (they sell boxes of different sizes at a good price too). If you're moving and they offer to move your furniture, steer clear.

Shall I take it that's a 'no'? :) Double press the 'dimple' button at the bottom and you'll get a row of icons along the bottom only. You can scroll side to side through them. These are the apps that are open, and possibly trying to send or receive data. Press and hold on the top left of any one of these icons and they'll wobble with a 'no entry' sign on the top left corner. Press on all these no-entry signs one by one and they'll disappear. They're not being deleted, only closed. If a black circle with a white cross appears then it's being deleted. You delete apps by starting at the home page then pressing and holding on the top left of an app icon there. They'll all start to wobble and those that can be deleted will have the white cross. If this happens and you don't want to delete anything just press the dimple at the bottom.

Go to Settings, Privacy, Location Services. For the wifi, it should just automatically hook up to your wifi as soon as it finds it. I don't have to do anything to mine, even in my bag it connects to the wifi as soon as I'm in range. It also hooks itself up to any wifi network I've joined before includng my friend's house. Manar Mall and the airport :) Take a walk around with your phone until it loses wifi coverage then walk back into range to see if it automatically connects to wifi. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 19/10/2012</em>

To be doubly sure go to Settings, General, Cellular and turn Cellular Data off. This should make sure it's not doing anything through 3G. I have a contract with a 1GB allowance and I'm not careful at all. I'm always checking FB, uploading photos to FB, downloading emails, surfing - all on 3G when I'm out - and I don't think I've ever exceeded my allowance. I rarely have Location Services on though.

Yes. My iPhone switches to 3G once I'm out of range of home wifi but as soon as it's back in range it reconnects itself. Make sure your location services are off too. Set your email so it only checks manually (when you tell it to) and not set to Push or it will keep checking and downloading all the time. Only download apps, emails, photos when you're hooked up to wifi, and only update apps through wifi.

I have one in secondary as well as one in primary. MYP is Middle Years Programme for IB years 7 - 11 (I think). IB students would then go on to do DP which is Diploma Programme, for 2 years. At RAK Academy students do a modified British Curriculum instead of MYP before choosing DP (IB programme) or GCSE (British Curriculum). This I was told over a year ago so it may have changed.

Al Ghail? Wow, that's a way out. Might be worth looking at Fujeirah instead of RAK. I also refer to it as the Wild West. CA, your input is not required. It's catching up though, there are two current Hiltons (the beach resort & spa always gets great reviews) plus a Hilton DoubleTree and the Al Hamra Fort Hotel is currently being rebranded as a Hilton. We've got two Carrefour's and a Lulu. Fewer traffic jams but the driving is worse than Dubai.

Life's great :D Not glitzy or glamorous like the southern Emirates but pretty laid back. There are a lot of expats but it's a pretty tight-knit community as there's only one international school, so most people's paths seem to cross quite frequently. The school is called RAK Academy - formerly RAKESS. The primary school is split into two campuses (campii?), one IB and one BC. Currently there's no secondary BC school although there is one under construction but I have no idea when it will be finished. The board with the construction details says RAK English Speeking School so I'll let you have your own thoughts on that. For the existing secondary there's no MYP so the students do a modified BC before opting either for the DP or the British system (are they still called GCSE's?). I'm not a great fan of the school to be honest. Primary is fine but I have my doubts about the secondary. There is a school called the RAK American Academy for Girls, but it's not very 'American' iyswim.

I don't know why either, but I wouldn't argue with it. DH gets so wound up as a true born-and-bred Canadian when he meets people who originally held ME passports (not GCC) who grin at him and tell him they're Canadian too. They usually spend the minimum amount of time in Canada then come back here with a passport that allows them to travel far more freely than their original one. I understand that this does not apply to every Canadian passport holder born in the ME, but there are a fair few of only a few nationalities who this does apply to.
