Thanks DR. I'll find out where the closest station is, maybe one in Musandam. There is an option to get one by post for people no longer in Oman but I have no idea how long that would take.

Has anyone had to get one of these? If so, did you do it by post (and how long did it take?) or in person? Any tips please?

Not for Skype to Skype but to dial a landline or mobile from Skype you may need a VPN (I do).

Dig out all deposit receipts. Cancel international roaming on your phone if you have it - that's usually AED 2000 you can get back, but you'll need your receipt.

Thank you! lilypad, does that actually mean, in Urdu, that no money is required? I wasn't sure if the English "free" would maybe translate to "at liberty" etc. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 03/09/2014

Please! :) I have stuff - small items of furniture mostly - to get rid of. It's not good enough to give to charity so I was hoping to leave it outside my gate to see if anyone wants to take it before I try and find somewhere to dump it. DH suggested sticking a sign to the wall saying something like "free - please take" in several languages. I'm not sure about using an online translator because I don't know if our word 'free' (no financial cost) will translate to have the same meaning in other languages. If ladies who speak the languages above can help I'd be very grateful. Thank you!

I'd get rid. You are paying to have someone make your life easier, not wind you up. I guess if you're happy with her work you could have a word with her and tell her that her role is to clean your house, not comment on your family and the way it's run. It's not your fault her husband lost his job, and if her job is that important maybe she needs to smarten up a bit.

I saw a pair of pajamas in M&S recently. The UK price of £10 was still on the tag. The UAE price was AED 125. That's just just over £20!! That HAS to be greed, or everything would be double the price.

I need to cancel my DD's visa as I understand it could be tricky for her to enter the uae if her visa is expired and not cancelled (firstly, can anyone verify that?) She is out of the uae, visa is in old passport currently lost, so can we cancel her visa without having the visa to hand please?

Have you tried skyscraper city.com? You'll find forums for the UAE and you may find your building and/or developer discussed there. It could show you what others are going through and can help you get in touch with other people in the same position.

If you look on flightradar you can see the airspace over Ukraine, Syria and Iraq is quite empty. I arrived on KLM last night and we didn't touch Iraq, we flew over Iran (and what a pretty sight that was, all lit up :) )

We've found the UAE part of HSBC Premier to have some stupid procedures and people but overall they're not too bad. The one big advantage is that we automatically got Premier status when we opened an HSBC account overseas.

KLM are still flying over Iraq but are not flying over Ukraine so I assume they know what they're doing; same with BA. I'm a terrible flyer and will be flying back to Dubai on Thursday so I know how you feel. I was once prescribed Xanax and that helped.

As you enter the normal T3 departures building at DXB airport there's a little shop which sells TSA approved locks.

KLM stipulate one bag of up to 23kg. If you took two bags each weighing no more than 11kg each, you would still be charged for an extra bag. You really do need to check the policy of your airline (then check again).

I think it's a very old article. The author mentions the Burj Al Arab on licence plates and people running in front of cars for blood money. The BAA disappeared off the plates years ago, and I thought that the blood money thing was changed years ago too.
