We went to Sentosa (staying in the city) last year, decided there wasn't much to do and came back the next day early to do Universal Studios (which we all DID enjoy). Our kids were 6 and 12 when we were in singapore and to be honest, a week there was more than enough for us.

Yes I was thrilled! It was a very fetching '97 model VW Polo (1.0 litre engine), previously owned by a 70 year old lady. I had so much fun with that car :) We lived in the countryside so I could have been given a Robin Reliant and still been happy with it - anything that got me into the city! Hope you enjoy your new ride :) Mine was a 1978 model - 'T' reg (original T - with the reg letter at the end of the plate) :)

They've been here many times before so aren't in a mad rush to do touristy things. It's been a while since we've had houseguests other than my parents (for longer than one night anyway) but even so I'd make it clear - this is my routine and I have to stick to it.

Oh yes, I swore I'd always refer to Burj Khalifa as "Burj Dubai" :) I always knew that Big Ben was the bell, but until they changed the name earlier this month I had no idea what the tower was called anyway.

I don't see it's going to change. If the majority of people didn't refer to the tower's proper name as Clock tower, I doubt they'll refer to its proper name now.

The headline of your link says "Big Ben's tower renamed Elizabeth Tower in honour of Queen" Big Ben is the name given to the bell and will remain as Big Ben, it's "Clock Tower" that's being renamed.

PJ - really, for free? When we travelled to Oz (at 4 mths) I'm sure we paid something for him, travelling on our laps/in bassinet... Sanddy - sorry to be dense, is the diff between infant and adult the diff between on lap and in seat/carseat? No, infants do not have their own seat. They are on your lap so cannot be put in a carseat (unless you have a free seat next to you by chance). You still get (I believe) a baggage allowance with an infant so I guess the cost covers that. To be guaranteed a seat for the infant on which you can put their carseat you must buy a child fare. I think you may have to do this over the phone - not sure if the system allows a "child" under 2 when booking online. Not sure if that's very clear lol! You must pay for an infant (AED 420 return in the example I took from their website), even though they do not get a seat. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 26/06/2012</em>

I posted numbers on here, I wonder where it's gone. Anyway...I plugged in 8th to 29th Aug DXB-LHR-DXB onto Emirates wesite (incidentally the dates didn't matter, the table showed the same fare for all dates in Aug). 1 adult - AED 2810 1 adult+ 1 infant AED 3220 1 adult + 1 child AED 5140 Hopefully this post will stay...

One of my a/c's packed in so I called maintenance. They fixed it, went through all the other units (total of 6) and cleaned filters inside and on roof, recharged gas on a couple. Replaced a couple of the doo-dah units behind spotlight bulbs and swapped two water heaters over. Charged me AED 700. That's good, yes?

Oh, and your DH is the polar opposite to mine! when we first arrived in Muscat he had me behind the wheel 36 hours after landing (I'm from the UK). He made me drive from the hotel we were staying in to the school and back, from the hotel to his office and back, from school to office, mall and back etc so I was familiar with everywhere, and where everything was in relation to each other. My DH is away for weeks at a time so me not driving simply isn't an option.

Yep, start around the Ranches, but not during times when people are going to or coming back from school or work. Friday mornings are a great time to explore as the roads are lovely and quiet - the earlier the better. Decide where you would like to be able to drive to at any time of the day - Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall, a park etc then do it on a Friday morning. If you at least know where you're going when it's busy then that's a lot os stress gone. don't panic, even if you get lost or miss a turn. You can't get lost (well not for long anyway) Get a map. I have the Explorer Atlas which is indispensable for precise directions. A big fold out one is good for learning the areas of dubai. If you know Jebel Ali is towards Abu Dhabi, Rashidiya is near the airport etc then if you're not sure where you are you can use the road signs to give you an idea of where you should be heading (ie not towards Sharjah if you're in Dubai Mall and want to go home. Do you have someone who can navigate for you until you're comfortable?

I have bought presents for DS's teacher and assistant and also the bus driver and bus lady (he drives well, she makes sure DS always has his seatbelt on). I don't buy for all the subject teachers and I don't buy for DD's teacher (secondary school).

They're beautiful! She said in December a 10 panel bunting is AED 150.

Not much use but my stepmum in the UK makes it. I can ask if she has any advice if there's anything in particular you'd like to know. I'm sure tailors could knock it up pretty easily. If I was doing it myself I'd definitely do it by machine - it'd take forever by hand. I thought I saw some in Pottery Barn Kids a while back.
