The models with the spare on the door are older than the models with the spare underneath. I believe they changed around late 2004/2005.

Yes, I am a Class A worrier. DH sends me an SMS once he's arrived at his office (1.25 hour drive) and then I relax. When I drive to Dubai I also send him an SMS to let him know I'm there ok. We also let the other know when we're leaving to come home. May be OTT by other's standards but at least once I receive an SMS from him I know he's safe.

He can't be outside for much of the day. Stand outside barefoot. If it's too hot for your feet, it's too hot for his. Unfortunately the best we can do for our dogs is try and walk them before sunrise and after sunset.

Another one using AXA here, never had a problem. Have called them after doing a deal on a car and policy documents ready for collection in the 30 minutes it took to drive between the dealer and the AXA office.

Absolutely, and while we're at it.... people, please make sure you have smoke detectors in your homes. You can buy them for about AED 70 in ACE Hardware, complete with a long-life battery. I put mine up with 3M picture hanging velcro/tape, so it's not a difficult job but it could save your lives!!!

Panadol Night, although they do have a painkiller in them too. They have the same active ingredient as OTC sleeping pills you buy overseas.

aaah my post was removed? Not sure why - it was helpful and could save a life or two. Anyway, yes, its very very sad and I am very cross about the total waste. Hopefully the authorities across the region will do fire drills now to check their public buildings I guess because you named some establishments? Anything that can be made in bulk and frozen! I have a book by Annabel Kantaria which deals with feeding from weaning to toddlers. My youngest is 7 but I still use the recipes now and again as they're still relevant. My kids love homemade burgers and I make them in batches of about 15 and freeze them. They can be cooked straight from frozen. Mild curries, and bolognaise sauce can be batch-made and frozen and it doesn't take much time to make spaghetti or rice (I cook my rice in the microwave.) You can also do an egg-fried rice pretty quickly and add small pieces of cooked chicken (or whatever your preference is) along with spring onion, peas, sweetcorn, tiny carrot cubes etc.

FYI The rules changed this year and it's now easier to bring pets into the UK from certain countries (of which the UAE is one). They no longer need to do their 6 month quarantine period here before travel to the UK (only 21 days). http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/pets/pet-owners/#a OP, I know this isn't applicable to you but to others who may be following this thread.

I thought it was more a case of a restriction on animals entering in summer months, not leaving; and restrictions placed by the airports and not the airlines. For example, Houston does not receive animals for a coupe of months in the summer, regardless of where they originated from. I'm trying to find info to back that up but it's been quite a while since I was doing the research. Most airlines will refuse to carry brachycephalic dogs at any time of year.

my july flight is 800 quid. :\: I booked through the Emirates website last month for the kids and I in Aug. EK to London then BA to Houston and return. Stopovers in each destination. You need to be clear on exactly 'what' you intend employing - a proper, trained nanny? Or a housemaid who'll be looking after children? If it's the latter then yes, you're correct. She will need to have been employed by you for a year.

What I'd intended to say then was given your dog's age I think it would be better if he could be re-homed with a loving family who'll take good care of him and give him all he needs in his late years if he really can't go home with you.

The dhow trips usually stop for an hour or two for snorkelling. Google "musandam tours". Some companies will pick guests up from Dubai to save you having to do the border crossing (unless you want to go too of course). If you go, remember your vehicle insurance (copy is fine) and registration card. It will cost a UAE resident AED 50 to enter Oman, not sure about visitors.

why would anyone even click a link to something like that ? :( Because when its posted on facebook its not always clear what the content of the video is, I can assure you I don’t go looking on YouTube for videos of mothers beating the **** out of their baby. how do you post a you tube link on facebook without any hint of what the content is ? I took it that one is not always aware of the content of a video posted on FB by another. Sometimes the titles sometimes have little to do with the true content and the preview shot can be quite benign.

There was a rabid dog hanging around in Goa when I was there years ago. I got bitten by one of the puppies and was given a course of vaccinations as soon as I reported it on my return (got bitten in the shin and was injected around the site of the bite as well as arms). It's obviously still a problem and I wonder how aware travellers to Goa/India are.

Sorry to bring up this thread again, but really need to rant. Was just trying to reason with a friend who posted this on her FB wall. Apparently she thinks its 'imperitive' to create awareness about this. Excuse me? The lady's in jail, the little girl's thankfully in foster care, and what are we making people aware of? And then she went on a weird trip saying "The only thing predictable about life is that its so unpredictable. This can happen to any of us......" All this is after a few of her friends who did not know what this is about clicked on the video, saw the first 3 seconds and were totally horrified and told her so. I have a 'friend' like that too - little common sense and then they stupidly try to cover up their stupidity! Same here. A FB friend once posted a video of tombstoning gone wrong and it was horrid, it turned my stomach and made me feel ill for ages. I posted to say it was vile and unnecessary and she pulled the same "I just want to make people aware how dangerous it is" line out of the hat. Yeah right.

Anybody else been waiting nearly two months for their card to come through? 2 months? I've been waiting since October! Have you tried the online status thingy (when it was working)? Mine showed when DS's application was made, and when my biometrics were captured (same day) and that's it, no progress since then. DH and DD, who have their cards, show the full process. It's like mine and DS's applications have got lost. It's also strange that the two cards still outstanding are the two applications which had the wrong nationalities typed on them [img'>http://smileyicons.net/s/321.gif[/img'> I didn't even know about the online status thing. I've just been calling them every month or so to check if something is wrong. They seem to think its all fine and sometimes it just takes longer than others :\: If it worked, you could access it here http://www.eida.gov.ae/en/eida-services/id-card-status.aspx I've been in with my forms and just got a pleasant lady tell me that it was fine, no problem.

It could well be that your neighbour is unaware just how bad their dogs are. I'm going to have to do the same thing, but to tell a friend. She said that her dogs don't bark much but I can tell when they're not home because her dog goes outside and barks incessantly. And loudly!!

I agree Mrs PH, if she needs medical care relating to her pregnancy things could get difficult. If possible - if it were me - I'd be wanting to get to the UK and stay there until after baby is born and I have his/her BC and passport. Being here with children born out of wedlock (born elsewhere that is) is not a problem.

If you're joining traffic (crossing white lines) you won't have right of way so it will be your fault if you get hit. On some roads, your approach/slip road will just continue and be the far-right lane so I would imagine you would have right of way as cars on the road you're joining would have to change lanes to get in that lane. I wouldn't want to put the theory to the test though....

I know this is a really crappy time to realise that things aren't as you seem, but to put a different slant on it... If.....and I'll attach all the necessary 'god forbids'....you divorce or become widowed, is there anyone who will actually recognise your marriage? It seems that it absolutely necessary to make sure you have all legal angles covered. Good luck, and I hope you don't have to travel to resolve it.
