Go to one of the typing centres [url=http://www.eida.gov.ae/en/process-and-fees/registration-plan.aspx'>listed here[/url'> to get your form filled in. Bring your passport and cash. Once your detail have been entered you'll be given a copy of your form and you'll be given an appointment by SMS. I did mine in RAK at a typing centre next to the ID office and went from the typing centre to the ID office and had my photos, prints etc taken there and then. 7 weeks on and I don't have my card though....

It is an MMI store so if you have a loyalty card you can get it stamped at The Cellar in RAK for each AED 250 you spend. Not quite as big or as much selection as Barracuda, but still not a bad place to shop.

RAKAWC has boarding facilities. They also have a vet on site too. It's about 20-25 mins from Al Hamra.

Yes, we were 18 so we had the dhow to ourselves. We went to an area to go dolphin spotting (and saw some :) ) then to Telegraph Island to go snorkelling. After a couple of hours there (including lunch) we moved and moored off a beach which we all swam to, then spent an hour or so fishing (one of the kids caught the captain's dinner!)

If you fancy a drive (but shorter than Fujeirah) then head to RAK. The ID centre is not far from the E311 turn-off and the typing centres are all close by the ID centre (easy walking distance). You can get your typing done then get the fingerprinting/photos etc done after without waiting for an appointment. RAK residents should have all got their cards a while ago so there's not the same rush as in Dubai.

Shop and Ship website says they won't carry: Wet Ice (frozen water), Liquids not otherwise classed as Dangerous Goods (Shampoo, body lotion, etc.), Anti-freeze, Brake fluid, Camphor, Essential oils (Eucalyptus, tea tree, etc.) I thought they used to say they wouldn't carry cosmetics too.

Despite us being "up north" it's still very warm up here at night. :) I've not seen anywhere up here to camp by the beach (although I haven't looked very hard). People camp on the beach just south of Bab al Bahr (which is the development of pyramid shaped apartment blocks just south of Al Hamra on the E11)

I went in February and won't be hurrying back. It was "ok". I suppose it's great if you're a real Ferrari enthusiast but as a family day out I thought it was a bit lame. There was a bit of a sandstorm when we went and the 2 big outside rides were closed.

With kids I wouldn't entertain a maid who didn't speak English (or at least our mother tongue). I would need the reassurance that the children could communicate with her/ask for help instantly, and that she could call for medical or emergency assistance if she had to. does she speak Arabic?

thank you ladies but for the sake of passing the RTA road test, do I just brake at the traffic lights? edited by muu on 16/05/2012 when i was learning to drive in london, i was told that to move your mirror slightly to the left so that you actually had to move your head a touch and its more obvious, and so your examiner can see that you are looking in the mirror etc. so yes brake at traffic lights I was told that too, albeit many moons ago. When doing my reversing around a corner on my test the examiner didn't even look at how close I was to the kerb, he just wanted to see where I was looking while I was reversing.

I never use the handbrake in my auto (yet it's instinctive in my manual) but at lights I will put in neutral and use the footbrake. If I know I'm going to be sat a while then I'll put it in park. Not to say that's right of coure, and I never learnt in an auto.

I would still call and ask what the deal is, as I understand it the municipality has been cracking down on it a lot lately (ever since the jumping sheep story) and if the people you mention are in a position to be setting an example to others then just maybe they might ask them to reconsider slaughtering a sheep in their yard... yes slaughtering animals is part of life here but doing it in residential areas has now been decided to be against the code. It's in place for health reasons not to make anyone look silly or shamed, if you're worried just call from a public phone with a phone card... edited by SkyKitty on 15/05/2012 The whole street's probably "exempted" ;) every house in our street slaughters their animals at home Is this a stealth boast? :)

Not been in June but went in April (several years ago) with an 8 year old and a not-quite 3 year old. We went to Bandos which isn't the most exotic island but still has lovely views and is good for kids. There are pools which some islands don't have, and a kids club. I booked the lot through emirates holidays and the lady I was dealing with had worked there and told me to take favourite snacks for the kids. You don't need fancy clothes. Wish I was going...

A week in England to catch up with family that don't travel (haven't seen my grandfather for 2 years :() then off to Houston to meet up with DH who'll be working there. We'll spend a few days mooching around then we're off to LA for a week to do the whole Disney thing. The inlaws are meeting us in LA. A day and a half in London on the way back here.

Is it really jealousy? For me it's as simple as this: wearing revealing clothing is frowned upon in this culture and upsets some of the locals. I don't want to be tarred with the same brush because I'm an expat. I also don't want to lose the freedom we do have because of those who don't give a toss about whether their actions offend the locals.

the standard acceptable clothing in the gulf in General (not talking about Saudi, Qatar etc) is: Nothing above the knee Shoulders covered No low cut tops to expose cleavage Nothing see through or tight fitting this is pretty straight forward in my opinion A pretty summer dress with short sleeves and a hem to the knee worn with flip flops is fine...and hardly a bind to wear. Do you always cover your shoulders? Do you never wear shorts or dresses above the knee? Not in public, nope. Always wear something with sleeves - short sleeves admittedly, but shoulders always covered. I wear cargo pants/cropped trousers/capri pants: my knees are always covered. I don't find it difficult or a bind to do, and I never have in all the time I've lived in the Middle East. I really don't see what's so difficult about dressing in a manner to respect the local culture.

If she was going out with her bits hanging out then I think that yes, he was entitled to remark on her dress. The point was that he was happy for her to dress to please his eye when they were together but not when they were apart. Whether she was dressed appropriately for the region isn't the issue, it's that he had double standards, and doesn't really have anything to do with this.

Interesting thread. On the jealous boyfriend thread, there was the general consensus that the boyfriend should not be allowed to dictate to his girlfriend how she should dress, yet some of you ladies believe it is your right to tell a complete stranger how she should or shouldn't dress. Do you not think that is a bit hypocritical? edited by Sprinkler on 14/05/2012 Not really. There is a dress code here. I don't think anybody should flout that in public, regardless of who it is - even the OP of the thread you are referring to (although I don't think her boyfriend was concerned with the dress code).

I read the headline as "dress right, drive snowballs". Took me a few attempts to read it as "dress right drive" snowballs. I've said elsewhere that although I support these campaigns, they're of no use unless they're enforced, and security in malls ain't gonna do that. If they're serious maybe a few police handing out on-the-spot fines might drive the message home?

I went to Ice Land 2 weeks ago and the main pool with the little slides and the buckets was empty and having some work done. Not sure if it is open again now. One thing.... keep an eye on your kids. Our group was in the wave pool when one lifeguard sat near the deep end started blowing his whistle in a 3-blast pattern and was pointing to the edge of the wave pool. He was pointing to a man holding an unresponsive child in his arms. Thankfully (!) the child hadn't drowned, but slipped, smacked her head and knocked herself unconscious, and recovered quickly. However, despite the first lifeguard raising the alarm straight away it took a long time for anyone else to come and help. I'm not saying they're any worse than guards anywhere else, but just be aware, they may not be that great....
