Aroha, it's not somewhere I would choose randomly, and it's not my first choice. DH's head office is there so the potential to move there is very high. The main reason we're still here is our property. We can't sell it and don't want to leave here with it unsold; even renting's too risky. The 'fors' for us are weather (still hot and humid but not for so long, and not cold like northern Europe), proximity to family (3 hours further from mine than here, but at least puts us on the same continent as DH's family), schooling, lifestyle and most importantly, the chance to lay some roots down in a place that has a lot to offer us. Crime is a bit of a factor there, but I guess that's the same in many parts of the world.

Jealous!! Did both last year. Back to Houston this year. Thankfully we are heading to the UK first so we'll get our share of cold, wet and miserable there :)

I'd be Victoria Beckham. She has it all: lots of money, loving husband, 4 healthy kids, a skinny body, beauty, etc. what would you do with that accent though? Elocution lessons. Oh, did you mean him or her?

In another life I would be Katy Perry, but of course minus Mr Brand (ugh). In this life I would be Nigella Lawson, and look oh-so-s3xy as I frost my cupcakes and suck my fingers, slowly bending over the counter, cleavage leading the way. ROFL!! Have you seen this? [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtS2Ikk7A9I'>Naughty Nigella[/url'> (don't watch in company)

Property is cheap and I guess eating out too but trawling around the malls I found that the costs were comparable with here. Saying that, I'd still move there :) with regards to working, don't you need a Green Card?

Actually, me neither, but only because I have never heard one good thing about the place, but many, many reports of the poor, dirty cramped conditions the animals are kept in.

Nope. I received an item recently with the invoice missing. I'm fairly sure Amazon didn't forget to include the invoice in this high(ish) value item. Discomforting though it is, they probably weren't to know what the documents are and they open them all. We get greetings cards opened - they don't discriminate.

When things like that happen to me (and I'm in the mood to be sticky about it - usually I'll let it pass) I will look directly at that person and ask "Excuse me, but what did you say?" And if they have the nerve to repeat it - I'll say "Yes, That's what I thought you said." and leave the conversation (such as it was). It's amazing how many people will not respond to the first question or even apologize or reword their comment to be PC - and if they don't, well, I've been polite and walked away without responding in kind. Or you say (with an innocent look on your face) "I'm sorry, did you mean for that to sound so rude?"

Flesh coloured regular knickers (sorry, pants are men's underwear :) ) like this [url=http://www.marksandspencer.com/Rise-All-Over-Floral-Bonded-Shorts/dp/B004K5F8I0?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_3&nodeId=62805031&sr=1-3&qid=1336899647&pf_rd_r=0XH33XMVVSM2JHRT8SEG&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=62805031&pf_rd_p=215570647&pf_rd_s=related-items-3'>link[/url'> They are far less noticeable than white drawers.

It would depend on the brand of cleaner as I'm not sure all attachments will fit all cleaners. Google "yourvacuumcleaner brand Dubai" to find out the distributor and contact them - probably by email as you may have difficulty getting your point across over the phone.

I'm not sure if it depends on the severity of the damage. I've had minor dents, dings and scratches repaired without a police report. For all we know, the person who hit the camel may well have reported it. The message may not have ben relayed to whoever is responsible for removing it.

I would start looking at alternatives just in case, until you get a definite answer. To take a maid to the UK she needs to have been working for you for at least a year, this may also be the case in Canada.

You could also try putting a Wanted ad on dubizzle and be quite specific. You'll still be offered everything from cars to cheetahs to mobile phones but you [i'>might[/i'> get lucky.

The iPad does the same, as does my Dad's. It's happened when the iPad has been next to me too. I think it's 'asleep' then receives an email because it's then that the user suddenly pops up online when they haven't touched it. I think DH was playing lol.

Does your DH have any DIY skills at all? We had similar in our house in Muscat; very high ceilings/drop from one floor to another and huge gaps between the balustrades. The simple solution is a large plywood board (plenty of choice in ACE Hardware). Stain it if you wish. Drill a few holes either end and thread tie-wraps/cable ties through the holes and around the balustrades to secure the bord in place.

If you can get someone to translate, see if it says the time of the parking offence. If it's after the time your SMS said you paid for parking then you might have a chance.

Not quite as old as you, I have been on here since September 2005, although I did have a name change back in 2007! Eek! We actually met when you were still under your previous name! (we met at a previous poster's house to talk about the sell off of The Lakes. Another poster (ex poster?) who does a lot for animals was also there). Five years ago *gulp* We did! We only just moved out of our villa in the Lakes so our fight was worth it! Good news :) . We left ours in 2009, but with a profitable "reason" to go ;) ETA I've lost touch several months ago with the lady who hosted the evening though. :( edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 09/05/2012

Generally, you are expected to inform insurers if your property will be left unoccupied for more than a month at a time. You also need to inform them if you'll have tenants.

There are quite a few places around Big Red who rent quads out in a confined area (but quite a big area). No-one leads, you kind of play around, but there are employees sat around on top of dunes to help you out if you get in trouble.

Do as SM suggests. The whole renewal process for your maid should not take more than a couple of weeks. It doesn't matter if your DH changes jobs, your maid is sponsored by him, not his company (same deal for you if you're on his sponsorship). We had the same thing. DH had to change his visa when he changed jobs/sponsor/freezone entity. We didn't have to do a thing.

Do you have an ID card at all Belinda? You will be fined from 1st June if you don't have a current card. You can do it at RAK, we have Dubai visas and did ours at RAK, and very quickly (apart from the fact two out of the four cards haven't materialised of course...) ETA We didn't fill out anything ourselves. The typist took most of the details from our passports and asked the other questions while we sat there. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 08/05/2012

Oooh, I don't know! I did mine in RAK. There are loads of little typing offices near the ID building and "touts" come out and hustle you into one of the offices. They just used our passports and asked us a few questions. And got two out of the four wrong [img'>http://www.smileys4me.com/getsmiley.php?show=1252[/img'> The two that were right were done within two weeks, mine and DS's which were wrong don't show in the system as having anything done for a month *sigh*

Did you visit a typing centre first Belinda? The typing centres will fill in the forms that you need prior to visiting the ID centre itself.
