Why is the cabin in Emirates so hot? After asking 5 times on a 17 hr flight, I gave up. Hot makes the passengers sleepy. And the cabin crew?

There was quite an outcry on here a couple of years ago when they were all removed. Many people complained but it made no difference whatsoever. I have no idea what they're trying to achieve by not providing anywhere to sit except to turn people off.

Maybe it is and I don't realise it. If we really were in danger of crashing/stalling/dying then planes wouldn't be allowed to fly unless the weather was great and everyone else on the flight would be terrified too, wouldn't they? SK, once I've booked my flights, make sure you're on them. Then I'll be fine :D

Throw a meal at me now and again (but awash with wine) and you won't hear a sound from me. I do not understand why I am scared of flying but I've been battling it for over 20 years (I've even done a course which, while effective for a few years, has lost its effect). I am not claustrophic and I understand aerodynamics well enough to know how aircraft fly. I also understand how jet engines work but some stupid part of my brain overrides all the common sense. Turbulence is my biggest trigger, more so since the Air France crash. I'm a nutter and I know it. If you'd only fly with me every time Sky Kitty :)

True, but you can't do that on a bus or train, so why on a plane? I just wonder about it, that's all. If it were up to me, alcohol wouldn't be onboard at all, I think it causes way more problems than it's worth... in my opinion only of course! You can't?!?! :\: I'm a terrified flyer who hates every second of being within 300m of an aircraft but has to fly. Alcohol allows me to do this. Thankfully I'm the sort of person has a drink and settles down with headphones and movie and never presses the call button.

but I do wish airlines would make their own lives a bit easier by giving everyone a small bottle of water at the start of the journey. I think if they did that, a lot fewer people would feel the need to pester the crew, allowing them to get on with the bigger job of serving dinners/dealing with emergencies etc. Can I swap mine for gin please?

Why cant the aunt visit her instead? Tell her that she is still under probation period work wise and you wont feel comfortable for her to sleep out just yet however the aunt is welcome to come over for a visit on her off days. Once probation period is finished you might change arrangements if everything went well or not... Good plan. Then you'll see if "Auntie" is really an "Auntie" or more of an "Uncle"...

My maid was always referred to as "Auntie XXX". when I asked her why she said it was a term that the younger ladies used to the older ladies (Filipinas). almost a term of respect I suppose. No blood relation in sight. I would very much doubt your maid's Auntie is a family member but whether she's asking to sleep at another woman's place or with a man, who knows...

We have eLife through Etisalat (no choice of providers for us) so we have TV, landline and internet bundled into a package called Triple Play. With this you can choose your internet speed and TV package (so whether you prefer movies, sport etc). Package prices vary according to internet speed and TV package chosen. I would imagine it's very similar with Du. Some people don't get a bundle and just choose landline and internet and get TV through OSN and a satellite dish.

We've never had download limits or incurred any extra costs for downloading a lot of stuff in a month. Go to du.ae and you'll find package info and costs there. You can also look at etisalat.ae for the same info.

What if you made the agency pay the cost of getting a new number? Its not worth it..I have called the agency and told them I no longer want her to come to my house. I don't want her to lose her job but I also don't want her here again. Personally, I think you should let the agency know what she has done. I doubt she'd lose her job over this if this is her first offense. The agency has spent too much money on her and makes a lot off of her so they will not want to send her home. Why in the world did she do that anyway? I'm guessing it's because of the poor cell phone reception in the Springs or because her boyfriend is cheap and doesn't want to pay for the call. She really overstepped the boundaries here! My maid did this soon after she came to work for us. I thought she'd been phoning all and sundry but she hadn't actually made any calls. She gave my number to her friends so they could call her on the landline rather than on her mobile which didn't get good reception. As she didn't actually incur any costs she didn't see a problem with it. She was quite surprised that I did and when I explained that I didn't want random strangers knowing my home number she was totally unaware that it could be an issue.

Hiya I can only speak from my own experience and that was end of Jan this year. Had to start from scratch with medical, fingerprints etc. Were told ID card is linked to visa and as a new visa will be issued with the new job, it makes the previous card invalid in every way. I am still waiting for my card to reach me. It is a big inconvenience, particularly if you work and have to spend hours sitting around. Hope you get it sorted with minimum fuss... ok medical i can understand as that is part of the visa process, and now the visa is connected to the id card, so those two go together but if you have clear fingerprints/photo etc then you shouldnt need to do them again as thats what takes up the time...!! No; trying to explain to the typist that although my DH holds a Canadian passposrt, mine - which she holds in her hand - is a UK passport and I am not Canadian, as she has entered on my form, and that despite DS's passport saying "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" he is not Irish. That's what takes the time. Out of 4 forms she typed up, 2 are wrong [img'>http://www.smileys4me.com/getsmiley.php?show=1101[/img'>

I can't help but just wanted to say it looks like things might be going well for you? If so, good news ;) My Mum's DH wasn't an EU citizen and it took a few attempts for him to get a visa but she was already living in the UK so probably different situation. (and nearly 8 years ago). You won't actually come off Emirates Road. You stay on it until the road narrows down to two lanes, does a left hand bend then comes to a roundabout where you can only turn left or right. Turn right. Go straight - through the roadwroks diversion, over the flyover, over a roundabout with a 'tent with a clock in the top', straight over the lights, straight over a roundabout with a dhow then you come to a roundabout with giant oysters and pearls. Turn right. Go over the bridge then get in the left hand lane. You'll see two high-rises on your left then Civil Defence and Manar Mall on your right. At the next set of lights(Manar Mall on the corner to your right) turn left and stay in the left hand lane. Turn left at the next set of lights. the hotels should be signposted. If not.... If you're staying at the Hilton by the Creek turn left at the next set of lights. If you're staying at the beach one, go straight through these lights and turn right at the next roundabout. Left at the next roundabout, right at the next one, take first left. At the end of the road you'll come to the beach and a roundabout. Turn right and you'll see the Hilton. Simple :D

Mint sauce.. Our Spinneys has Colman's mint sauce along with the mustards and horseradish etc. Which one is that? Big Flag one no, Wasl Rd no... Go for Waitrose; RAK is a long way to go for mint sauce. (Although I'll buy you a jar or five if you can't get any down there) :)

Not in this country, anyway. If you think it's your water heater, open the hatch where the heater is and you can turn off the inlet to the heater. At least then, once the heater/tank is empty it won't refill and keep leaking.

Jamhind, don't let it become a huge issue for you - for the vast majority of us it's just fine. Many of us have been driving here for years without any serious issues, mostly fender-benders. Of course serious accidents do happen but please don't let it put you off driving here - the chances are that you'll be absolutely fine.

It's not too late to sit down and work out what YOUR expectations are then sit down with her and your DH and go through them with her. Maybe she has no idea what you expect from her and is winging it, something that can be fixed with some direction from yourselves. Personally I would stop her working at the office, at least until she's working how you want at home.

it is crass And sometimes on this board............verging on racist. The English language is a very broad church. (Oh.........and isn't Mamsir just an Anglicised version of MemSahib? In other words.............lady boss? Which is surely a term of respect. As for the comments on here regarding the meaning of the term Madam............all I can say is, some of you ladies either have very dirty minds or move in the strangest circles..) I can't speak for ADCB but I did s the same question of our advisor with HSBC Offshore held in Jersey. She also said that Sharia law cannot have any affect on our offshore accounts. She did say there can be issues if offshore accounts are not held in joint names at time of death (ours are so no issue there), but this was nothing to do with Sharia law.

I have (what I think is) a cichlid and it's indestructible!! I took it from an EW'er who was leaving the UAE in October 2009 and the blo*dy thing is still going strong! I have a feeling I'll need to rehome it when we eventually leave. It's stood being transferred from previous owner to me in a leaking Ziploc bag (flat on the floor of the car), jumping out of the bin it was being held in until I could get it a tank (previous owner said it would be fine to go in with DD's goldfish but her parting shot was "It killed all my other fish" so I had to buy another tank etc), having furniture polish & mossie spray sprayed in the vicinity and being vastly overfed by a feeding tablet which turned the water swampy brown. Get one of those, it'll outlive the lot of you.
