Normally I find S&S to be on the ball - when they receive items in the UK or US box it shows on the website pretty quickly but this (multiple) shipment was delivered to my US box at 5pm yesterday (2am today our time) and it still doesn't show. I don't suppose they'll open until Sunday.

My understanding is they are being bought by Continental. I flew with them earlier this year (short haul, thankfully) but I'm sure all my documents had the Continental logo on them. Anyone seen "Come Fly With Me" on BBC? AA/Continental - FlyLo...

It's the same link. ETA, you're right though, this is a 3rd child in Sharjah. I thought 2 in such a short space of time was unbelievable but 3...? edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 30/11/2011

I have the flags on my car and many expats have their cars done too. We had a great morning at the National Day celebrations at school today, and our Sheikh came in and made a speech *grin*. DS (blonde hair, blue eyes) is wearing a UAE flag t-shirt and has had his photo taken plus had lots of locals point and smile. I heard of one family refusing to join in and kept their kids off school because "It's not our day" (so they'll be going into work tomorrow then). What nonsense! We have been invited to join in and celebrate.

It's a while since I've been but I would not fancy paying money to see the Lost Chambers. It was ok as part of the package to stay there but we were in and out in no time. I thought the aquarium at Dubai Mall was much better value for money.

Mine was 2 1/2 yrs. I went as a chaperone to ease my nerves. :) DS was sicked and missed his first one (I was secretly glad). for the next one, another Mum followed the bus through Dubai and I knew she'd let me know if there was a problem. I wasn't ever really concerned about the trip itself, just the journey to and from the venue.

DS was about a year older. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. It depends on whether you feel your child could cope with/would enjoy it, where the trip takes place, child to adult ratio, experience of supervision, mode of transport etc.

Many times DS has come home with his packed lunch completed untouched because the parent of a birthday child has had McD's or Burger King delivered for all the kids in the class. I'm not a fan... I shudder to think what delights they'll get for National Day (one year, before we were at the school, a helicopter hovered over the school and dropped sweets/candies out into the school). edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 28/11/2011

Abandon him in a park? How will he fend for himself? How can you be sure he won't be used as a football by some of the cruel youths we seem to have here?

A friend wants to travel to the UAE with a friend from the Ukraine. AFAIK she will have to get her visa through a hotel. I've emailed a couple of hotels but had conflicting info. One of them asks for a marriage certificate which she doesn't have as she isn't married. Can anyone shed any light on what exactly is required, and how long it takes to process a visa please. Any online searches I do point to the UAE embassy in Moscow but I can't find a website. Thanks.

Call me cynical but...... I wouldn't hand it in to security. I would tell security you've found it and tell them to forward any potential owners to you.

Another one here, Sue? ETA. The little boy who was blind is the same child as in the OP's link. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 25/11/2011 beg your pardon - when i googled there were two listed and the blind boy seemed new... sorry. When the news was first in GN I don't think they knew he was blind so it was never mentioned in the first article.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about but now you have to name him something UAE/National Day related as it's on this thread. How about Khaleeji. Khaleeji rabbit - yeah..... Aroha has been wonderful and offered to adopt a bunny handed in to an animal shelter here. He's absolutely gorgeous but not doing so well on his own. Aroha has offered to take him on and will give him a wonderful, happy, carrot-filled life and I\m so excited to hand him over to her (in person!!!!!)

Yes, it is normal for the LL to pay for the maintenance. It's not a legal requirement though so make sure it's included in your contract. Can't really help with your other questions as I lived in The Lakes - close by the Springs - but in a villa so costs would have been different. Also, I think the costs have changed since I was in The Lakes so my info would not be up to date.

Talk to the teacher. At that age I would expect someone such as a TA to go with her, although when DS was that age the classrooms each had an "en-suite" toilet.

There were a few vehicles with flashing lights. They are SUV's but painted in black and grey camouflage-type stripes. Anyone know what they are? I've seen them before but don't know what they are.

If you're renting, make sure maintenance is covered by your landlord - get this in the contract.

Wondered if you came to see if they're the same up here as down there. So sorry to have missed you - give your helicopter crews heck as they were circling for long enough to have spotted Sanddy Towers. I would have given you a wave from Danube's car park as your entourage whizzed past had I known.
