my hubby does the scary dad thing. He managed to have twin toddlers cry their way out of our garage! Felt so bad for the mother, she must have wanted to kill him! lol I'm a bad person, I giggled.

Wasn't it the same here years ago that if someone you were trying to help died you could end up having to pay blood money?

A little 2 year old girl walked in front of a van which ran her over. The van did not stop. Another vehicle ran her over, also without stopping and several people just walked past her without trying to help. She's said to be in a deep coma and brain dead. The video on DM is horrific, don't watch if you think it may upset you.

Take the E311 (emirates road) until you get to exit 103 - it's signposted. Take that, following the Dreamland signs. You'll eventually come to the E11, turn right and you can't miss it on your left a few km up the road. I reckon 40 minutes (ish). edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 20/10/2011

@kazzaO Look on rakess.net (hopefully the music won't drive you insane :)) For the IB Primary there are limited places for KG1, year 2 and year 3. It doesn't give any indication of whether there are places in the British Curriculum campus - fees are the same for both. Generally, many of the expats put their kids in the IB side. Currently there is no BC secondary/high school. It's under construction but I haven't seen any progress in the past year so BC students move into the IB campus for year 7. Also, have a look on here [url=http://www.rakpedia.com/'>link[/url'> @fairwater You don't even need to like boats to go to the Yacht Club. There's a restaurant and bar in there, also rather pleasant to sit outside when the weather is good. To get to the A&E drive past the Royal Breeze towers on the road between RB towers and the sea. Keep going until you've passed the Al Hamra Marina apartment buildings and you'll see the Yacht Club to the left. Drive past that and you'll see a row of small, single story buildings fronting right onto the water. The first building is A&E. I can't remember exactly what else in in that row with A&E but there is a pizza/pasta place (also delivers) and a Lebanese/seafood place. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 20/10/2011

Dubai Mall is the most recent. There were LUSH shops in Deira City Centre and Mercato. Hopefully someone can update if these two are still open.

That's a 22% tip LOL! I guess you can give yourself a pat on the back for being generous but he was a bit cheeky to assume you wouldn't want any change, if that's what he did.

Love, love, love LUSH! I use the Dream Cream skin cream on the kids. DS gets allergic rashes on the tops of his legs and it's nice to calm the skin down. I love the soaps - which no-one else is allowed to use - and keep a bar beside my bed to sniff :)

Yes, but not Al Hamra, although I am there several times a week. The RB towers look lovely. It's a shame there's no convenience store within walking distance - a little Spinneys would have been fantastic, but it's nice that you're within walking distance of the yacht club and a few restaurants fronting onto the marina. Also walking distance to A&E if you like to partake :)

There's a place called Maison Chic. If you leave Al Hamra towards RAK city, go straight over the roundabout and it's about 3km on the left. It's a single story flat-roofed building, brown with orange writing. It's right next door (shares the building) to a bright green tyre place. The prices are reasonable but I've seen a "To Rent" sing on the windows so not sure if they're closing. They did have a warehouse in the industrial area opposite Al Hamra but I don't know if it's still there. A lot of their stuff is imported from Indonesia. Taxis are easy to get, there's a rank at Al Hamra mall so they don't have to come far to RB. The umber us 800 1700 and that covers a couple of taxi companies.

bbcb, I did mine online. I got a receipt for the deposit which I printed off, and you can attach electronic copies of the forms required. This was in Jan 2009 for a property which had been vacated about a week before we moved in. The link I posted in my previous post takes you to a DEWA page which says "[i'>Activation of Supply for new tenants (Residential, Commercial Premises, etc.). Register with DEWA to activate the electricity and water supplies to your new premises, receive monthly bills and SMS notifications. Supply is activated on the same day of registration. Deposit Fee: Dhs. 1,000 for Flat / Dhs. 2,000 for Villa.[/i'>"

OP as you've mentioned Al Hamra Village, Ras Al Khaimah in your title, I'll assume that's where you'll be (as plum2 said, Ras Al Khaimah and Dubai are not the same - they are different cities in different emirates within the UAE). There are lots of families in Al Hamra and the communal pools are good place to meet other families. There are playgroups (sorry, don't have details) in Al Hamra. The apartment buildings have noticeboards and you may find details of one there. Al Hamra mall is walking distance from the Golf Apartments and some of the townhouses and villas in Al Hamra, but the furthest point is a brisk 35 min walk away. It is possible to drive between any Al Hamra townhouse/villa or apartment building (there are Golf apartments right behind the mall and Marina apartments the far side of Al Hamra village) without touching the main road. Al Hamra mall has a Spinneys (supermarket), Mothercare, a few clothes shops, at @Home (home/kitchen store), a small food court (no McD's, but there is a Texas Chicken, Starbucks, Cafe Nero and Burger King in the mall) and a small kid's play area at either end. There is basically only one school, RAKESS which is about a 20-25 min drive away from Al Hamra. It is split into two campuses (sp?), British Curriculam and IB, both of which take children from 3 years old. I *think* the Playgroup in the school takes them from 2. Please ask if you require more info :)

Is this through iTunes? If so, click on the iTunes Store on the left then type "aguilera car wash" in the search bar top right. If I do this it gives me 47 songs, I'm sure the one you want would be one of them.

No, she was dragging up loads of pool threads warning people to stay clear of a company and/or two guys (she named them). Although she did say to check the credentials of anyone you hired, she posted the same post on loads of threads so it looked less like information and more like an axe to grind. ETA Her posts have been removed (where she complained, not where she recommended checking companies out) so I guess the threads have dropped back to where they were. I suppose this thread should be deleted now. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 16/10/2011

Do you have a bar right at the very top with the Apple logo in the left hand corner? Does it have a program name next to the Apple if so? Click on Skype itself and see if "Skype" appears in the top bar. The word "Skype" will be bold and along the same line will be File, Edit, View, Contacts etc. If you see this then the bold "Skype" is the one to click on. PREFERENCES will appear when you click on "Skype" edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 13/10/2011

We can cry on each other's shoulders. We've been paying the full eLife Triple Play tariff since July last year but can't stop, FF, rewind, record - never have been able to. We requested an extra connection a couple of weeks ago and they came to sort it 12 days ago and it was only then they gave us a PVR with the new connection. I guess we would never have been given a PVR otherwise so would never be able to use all the features. Anyway, it's never worked, always has an error message so I've been calling every day. A technician along with his obligatory button-pusher turned up yesterday with a brand new one because he was under the impression he was there to install a new PVR. He refused to take it out of the box and said I needed a "complain number" to get it fixed. I showed him the number I'd been given 90 minutes before but he said it was closed so he couldn't do anything. He told me to call Etisalat who would give me a new number and then send someone round. I lost it then, big-time lost it. I refused to call Etisalat to get a new number only to have to wait another 12 days for someone to show up. I told him to take the new one out of the box and try it, which he refused to do. After a lot more shouting and to-ing and fro-ing with his supervisor on the phone, he did so and it worked. I'm now waiting for them to activate it so I get all my channels. I'm not holding my breath.... Another fine example of customer-non-service in the UAE edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 13/10/2011

Hunt & Harris and Sherwoods have an office in Al Hamra mall. Of the two, I've found Sherwoods to be more pro-active (ie get off their @rse). Better Homes also have a rep in RAK, Abid who seems to be decent. Also contact Tom from here http://rentaproperty.ae/ Don't be put of by the web address, they sell and rent.

Why didn't you report it? Why assume it's cultural? What culture? Dodgy blokes taking pics of kids is NOT cultural. Report the buggers but still feel maybe should have been done at the time. One more thing.....in general.....and cultural....take note. please - enough with the assumptions that your child gets attention because of your colour. My kid isn't blonde and we get lots of attention. Don't think I've ever been anywhere and not had it. Always women or families. Never men!! Babies are seen as a wonderful blessing and the attention you get is out of love and they genuinely like babies. All babies. We've been conditioned in the west to fear any adult that comes near your baby. So yep - sure this incident was/is unacceptable. Quite frankly any men taking pics is. It would just be nice not to assume you get attention because you're white and that all bad behavior is 'someone' elese culture. Nope, it's they love kids. Side note - just back from the shops (England) and two White girls/teenagers burpt in my face. One dared the other to do it. I'm not going to start saying that this kind of bad manners must be a 'cultural' acceptable action. No excuses! Nasty people everywhere. Sorry, but its because they love kids??? Really? you think strangers taking photos of other peoples children (whether they're white or not) is because they love kids??? Also I really don't see how you've gotten out of this thread that children are getting attention because of their color?? There is a huge difference with people giving attention to your child and saying they're cute etc etc to taking sneaky photographs, or taking photographs at all. edited by AdviceSeeker on 12/10/2011 Agreed.
