yes and yes but we would have to seriously consider the impact on the amount we can save while we're here... Same here.

Ahhhh..... the old "If you don't like it, why don't you leave" chestnut. Trust me, the day my villa sells, I'll be the one flinging stuff in packing boxes, but until that day... :) But then this thread isn't about why people are here is it? edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 07/10/2011

We've managed to save but it took a couple of years before we really started to see our savings increase. The set-up costs just wiped any chance of saving out for a good while.

Today, we have ordered the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to double free-of-charge water quotas allocated for UAE nationals in Dubai from 10,000 gallons to 20,000 gallons per month. We have also exempted those, who receive social welfare assistance from the Ministry of Social Affairs, from paying electricity charges up to 6,000 kWh per month. Striving to provide best-in-class living standards for UAE nationals without burdening them with extra costs, we have also ordered DEWA to bear the costs of connecting electricity to houses of Emirati nationals in Dubai up to AED25,000 Shaks - I am confused, who is WE? http://www.facebook.com/HHSheikhMohammed?sk=wall Top post, click on "see more" to get it in English.

LOL no! I didn't like my LG front loader either! I love my Fisher & Paykel Top loader but after learning what I said in my previous post the hard way, I didn't buy it until I was positive that where we live now has both hot & cold water supplies to the washing machine. Try putting it on Classisifeds or Dubizzle. Check Carrefour online [url=http://www.ic4uae.com/SpecialOffers.aspx?gclid=CMa40OvC0asCFUMOfAodmDzsVQ'>link[/url'> for deals for washers that can often be delivered (but not necessarily installed) the next day. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 05/10/2011

Usually, the top loaders you buy here don't have a heating element so rely on a hot water supply to provide a hot wash. However, a large number of properties (The Lakes being one example) only have a cold water supply for the washing machine. If this is the case then there's really not a lot you can do I'm afraid.

Do you know how much the annual rent on your property is? Housing fee should be 5% of that divided by 12, as you pay it monthly - no more, and I don't beleive they can backdate it. Good luck and cheer up! edited by Cornish Pixie on 04/10/2011 Thank you C P. Until now it has always been 5% but today on the online bill it is 10% and I was a little shocked. I would wait until you get the paper bill. When I used to check online it always showed the 5% housing fee but the paper bill, when it came, never did. I used to pay the amount on the paper bill and it was never a problem. You never know, you [i'>migh[/i'>t be lucky...

Birds Eye chicken pies, never seen them here, theres just something about them that screams comfort food for Ds & I. Also Old El Paso fajita mix, the stuff here is hideous (IMHO) compared to the one from the UK. [b'>Easy and cheap availibility of craft supplies. I know its possible to get most things but the cost[/b'>....... likewise books are always expensive here. Otherwise just the usual friends, family, seasons. Quite lucky really I think. *nods head in agreement*

DH was the same, although different car. He looked at a few. The nice ones were close to new price and the more reasonable ones have had the cr@p kicked out of them. He decided that for his own peace of mind to go and buy a new one and know exactly what he's getting. I'm a lady-first-owner of a Prado. It has been off-road though :D

I've got kids who can amuse a toddler so no worries there. You can walk on the beach which is spitting distance away and forget the MIL exists. Why is she coming now when you're so close to having your baby, and while it's still so hot? and yeah, the evenings are still pretty sticky :(

I've had this happen as I'm approaching a U-turn I need to take. I find it often helps if I start indicating left as soon as someone gets too close. They then realise that you're turning and not just being a lane-hog. Of course, there are still the dix who either don't get it or don't care, but it can help. Same with being flashed out of the way when you're over-taking and can't move in without cutting someone else up (and my god, how that irritates me when someone almost takes my nose off as they cut in front of me to get out of the way of an idiot who's flashing them) - I indicate right so they know I do intend getting out of their way when I can. I still call them the see word under my breath though. ETA to change 'falshing' to 'flashing' as the former sounds rather rude. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 01/10/2011

I used to feel very sorry for the kids who would be looking around for their parents during a school event but I'm not so sure they were the children of working parents. A lot of children weren't remotely bothered and one child in particular was the son of a friend of mine who did work and could not attend many events. He always knew ahead of time which events his Mum would and wouldn't attend and was pleased when she did and completely unphased when she didn't. I think the key was making sure the child knew that the parent wouldn't attend and why. There were the odd events that I couldn't make and I felt terrible about it. I would explain to DS that I couldn't come and why and would imagine him looking out into the crowd of parents for me. The reality was different as because he wasn't expecting me, he wasn't upset that I wasn't there.

If you're entitled to visa on arrival then the cost is OMR 20 (around AED 200) I don't know about food issues but you're not supposed to take alcohol (depends if you're brave enough to "take" some). There are outlets such as A&E but I'm not sure if they'll serve you without a licence. ETA http://www.rop.gov.om/english/dg_customs_conditions.asp edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 30/09/2011
