Al Hamra people will say Al Hamra is better, MAA people will say MAA is better :D Al Hamra is a lot bigger, has a lot more people and is close to the hotels and Al Hamra Mall. MAA properties are bigger than AH properties (with the exception of the C villas in AH) and better finished. The landscaping in MAA is much nicer with lots more grassy and landscaped areas. The Granada part of MAA is quite small and no-one is more than about 2-3 minutes walk from the beach. MAA has a few shops including a Choithrams. RAK Ceramics spews out some pretty nasty stuff. AH is across the road from RAK Ceramics. FEWA charges will be the same as DEWA. Some of AH is on FEWA, the rest is on Utico (private). All of MAA is on Utico. The airport is about an hour if you leave around 6am using the E611 - that's as much as I know. Schools are RAK Academy and GEMS. Neither get too many people raving over them. GEMS had no native English speaking teachers. If good schooling is important consider sending your children to Sharjah English School or Ajman Academy. Don't know the best hotel, don't need them :) but hotels near AH/MAA are the Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort (formerly Al Hamra Fort Hotel), the Casa and the Waldorf Astoria. Towards RAK City there's the Cove Rotana, and over the other side is the Hilton Beach REsort and Spa.

You are sponsoring the new maid, yes? If so, she's been here a while, she will know that it's not in her interests to misbehave. To be concerned/worried/scared is perfectly natural. Tell her you will be calling and that she must answer her phone or the house phone. Call her and reassure yourself all is well.

Same with your card, if you don't grab it in time it takes it back in. Is everything ok with your account balance?

Oh b*gger. I wrote a chq to someone as a security chq. When I got it back I destroyed it. When I closed an account in England I had to hand over my cheque book and the account couldn't be closed until all cheques were either cashed or out of date. Does this mean I won't be able to close my account?

But I'm not the only one who hasn't had a huge window where I didn't need my passport. Unfortunately this is the biggest window we've had since last July, and it seems it may not have been long enough.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing so saying "couldn't you have done it this time.....couldn't you have done it that time" is as much use as t*ts on a fish, basically! If I'd have known I would be in this position now then YES, YES!!!! I would have done it another time - the time when people were getting them back in less than 2 weeks. But I didn't know....... Last year, no-one knew the passport office was going to be making huge cut-backs resulting in insufficient staff to deal with applications. Last year no-one knew they would drastically reduce the price of a renewal so "let's wait and save money".

Is the mango tree in a commonly accessible area or did he have to enter your private garden to pick them? I'd be pretty peeved if I caught someone doing this.

I had an Anglican wedding (so much for me thinking I was having a non-religious ceremony). Had to sign something a few days before and that was that. No lessons, no talks or discussions, just the wedding so although it might be the case in [b'>some[/b'> places that you have to have lessons, it's certainly not the case everywhere.

Maroosh, your views are very different to mine but as long as these views you will follow are of your choice, and not been thrust upon you I don't see a problem. I do believe love can grow, actually. I'm not sure if it can grow from nothing, but it can certainly grow from very little into something much bigger.

Also, you won't be able to drive a private car until you've got your UAE driving licence, which you can't get until you have your residence visa so plan to rent to start with anyway. You can drive a rental on your UK licence. Do women need an NOC from their husbands to get their licence now?

It's ok for those of us who've been here a while but totally confusing for anyone who wasn't here when the E311 was Emirates Road.

No, the road marytodd is talking about - the E311 - is Mohammed Bin Zayed road, not Emirates Road. Emirates Road is the E611 which was known as the bypass road. If you come on the E311 you take exit 103 towards UAQ. If you come on the E611 you follow it to the end, passing underneath the E311 and heading towards UAQ/

I can't remember what payment methods were available or how I paid. I've just remembered, if it was my UAE credit card then that's been cancelled and I can remember if it was before I even attempted to renew or if it was afterwards :( ETA I used a different card but the money was taken on the day I filled the online form in - a week before they actually received my application. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 28/05/2014

....now sweating as DS' passport has been in the system since 17 April and we travel to the UK on 20 July..... thought I'd given it plenty of time, I waited until the last minute so he was 16 then applied so he could get an adult 10 year passport. I don't want special service just timely - surely 8 weeks should be enough to renew, I've allowed 3 months thinking that was plenty - you never know when you need your passport, plus our visa is due for renewal in August. What a mess! But guess complaining won't change anything I travel 6th July :(

For those that applied in April I think the website guidelines was 4 weeks. A nd yes, as expats we don't always have 4 or 6 months free to renew. I thought sending mine straight after the easter hols would be wnough time :(

I live in Mina but in Granada which I far prefer. Granada is much smaller - less than 100 units to one poll, tennis court etc. Malibu has well over 200 units for the same ratio. Granada is much quieter and has fewer people in golf carts and quads racing around, especially during holidays and long weekends... RAK Properties have a sales and leasing office in one of the apartment buildings - building 16 or 17, I believe - and rent units directly. Al Hamra is very popular too and I'm not sure if they're still leasing themselves. Also try Darren from Haus & Haus (he's based in RAK) and Sherwood who also have an office in RAK. You can also contact me on lazylakite @ yahoo . co . uk for more info

I guess those that are being couriered out have details and photographs do require some skilled doctoring - not as valuable as blank passports.

Is it an item they have in stock or are they having to make it to fulfil your order? If it's the latter I'd be very surprised if they change it, but I wish you luck.

If you're in the mood for splashing out, Al Maha is amazing. I went in February last year, and again at the end of June. Even though it's in the desert it was still ok to do a sunset camel ride. The private chilled pool takes the edge off the heat too. I can't wait to go back :D

As humans we are given free will; we can't make anyone feel or think something they don't. Sadly, this difference is usually a sign that things aren't meant to be. Time is the biggest thing - and I know it's a cliche - but the intense feelings will fade, even if they don't disappear, over time. I hope you're ok, you sound very upset.

Sorry Scribs, it's not out of spite; I would have happily shared by email. This was quite a popular topic a while ago and people were posting the names of their VPNs on here. In no time at all the TRA had picked up on it and blocked the websites making it impossible for new users to get on and sign up.

i dont want to do it. Why would i renew it now and waste a month of my insurance? Your registration is backdated isn't it? I over-ran into my 1 month grace period but the registration ran for 11 months not 12 because of it.

Given that the signs on the doors of malls say "knees and shoulders should be covered" I don't know why anyone would say above the knee is ok.
