Agree with TB. Dress code signs say knees and shoulders covered so that's the best advice to stick to. Enjoy your trip, I hope it's informative ahead of your move :)

You [i'>[b'>can[/b'>[/i'> renew a passport in the UK if you are not there. You [b'>can[/b'> but you're not supposed to. The form for applications made within the UK state that you must be in the UK, and you sign to that effect. If they decide to check, you could be in difficulties. This I know because it happened to me in January when I was renewing my DD's passport. I made the application in the UK (DD stayed in the UK) and came back to the UAE. There was a problem with her application and the form needed to be done again. I was told that I would have to travel back to the UK to make another application and wait until the new passport had been issued. Luckily I was able to prove that I WAS in the UK at time of application and it went through, but they do check.

I'm not sure how it would work with the baby not being in the UK, but the person applying on the baby's behalf has to been in the UK during the application process.

Have any of you had any luck with getting your passport back?? Just wondering as I sent mine off last week, it arrived on Wednesday into Liverpool and I am hoping to travel at the beginning of June. When I used Germany before for my children's and mine it was so fast. Mine arrived in the Liverpool office nearly 4 weeks ago and I'm expecting that I'm only half way through now. I called after one week (thought I'd need to travel this month) and they wouldn't even discuss my application with me at that stage. I can imagine the backlog is just getting bigger and bigger.

Thanks for your comments ladies. We went to visit RAKESS, with no appointment, the other day and I have to say it felt very real, not as glamorous as the dubai schools, the teachers were extremely helpful and willing and the children looked happy and well behavioured. Just wondering if there is anyone out there with kids currently at these schools that can give me some feedback? Thanks Yes. I took my DD out of secondary and put her back home to continue her education. DS will finish primary there, then we're out of there. There are some great teachers. There are also some cr@p ones. There are also a lot of students for whom the rules do not apply.... ETA This is RAK Academy. My friend who has her kids in GEMS isn't any happier. RAK is a fabulous place to live but the education side is a huge negative. Primary, both PYP and BC seem to be fine, it's when you look at secondary it's not so great. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 16/05/2014</em>

You'll get no disagreement from me. I know people very unhappy with both schools. A lot of people have pulled their children out and drive them to school in Sharjah. Would living in RAK and putting your children in school in Sharjah (SES has a good reputation) be an option?

Not all European destinations are cargo, though. Most places allow pets to be carried as excess baggage. Yes, they're still carried in the cargo hold but excess baggage is a lot cheaper than manifested cargo. I contacted DEFRA last year who told me that they are working with various UK government agencies to get the rules changed so that pets can be carried into the UK as excess rather than cargo, potentially saving people huge amounts of money.

Have you contacted Danube? The RAK branch sell it so I assume the Dubai branches will too. Fitting it isn't difficult (I did some myself) so don't be ripped off with that.

I would contact DKC or Move One and ask for their advice. They may be able to tell you what you need without you having to use them, or use them for just a part of it. That wasn't a lot of help really, was it? Hopefully someone who's done it can give you specific info but that's what I would do in the event I got no personal info.

Have they actually confirmed it was an attempted abduction? A report I read yesterday said they hadn't found the mother but an 80 year old man had gone to talk to the police, so I'm hoping he just thought the child had wandered off and was taking him to security/safety etc. I really hope it was innocent, but as you say, it can happen so quickly. ETA Just read an update. The old man was acting out of good intentions (he was trying to take him to another lady who he thought was the child's mother, apparently, and no further action will be taken by the police). <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 10/05/2014</em>

When my LL was selling I stopped viewers from taking photographs inside. They didn't ask if I minded either. I'm a whole lot more amenable now it's my own property I'm selling :D If the agent doesn't accompany the viewers, I will, but I'll (cringe) and open my cupboards to show the storage inside as some cupboards are all shelves, some are hanging and some are a combination of drawers and shelves (I'm desperate to sell LOL!)

You (or somebody) has to be travelling with them and has the pet added as an "extra bag" onto their ticket. If the pet will be flying unaccompanied then they will have to go as cargo and this will push the price up considerably. You will need to book them in advance though, you can't just show up and pay the excess in the same way you do an extra suitcase because there's a limit on how many pets can be carried (I think it's three) so you need to make sure you get a spot.

As long as your total journey is not over 17 hours you can take them on Emirates as Excess baggage. The flight will cost you USD 350 but the total weight of pet and crate must not be more than 32kg. Sorry, can't help you with the rest.

Those people who send their passports away, knowing it will be for many weeks have clearly never been stranded overseas in a drastic situation! Why don't you send them to relatives in the UK for them to apply? Because there's a different application for people in the UK than there is overseas. The UK application has a declaration you have to sign stating that you are in the UK at time of application. Don't think they won't check, because they do. I found this out the hard way when applying for DD's passport then leaving the UK before the passport was processed. I was told I would need to fly back to the UK to reapply and wait until the passport was issued before leaving again. Luckily, I was able to prove I WAS in the UK at the time of application and managed to not have to fly back.

We chose the better of two that were close close to my parents. It's always had a good reputation anyway, so the proximity to family was a bonus. She goes to my Mum for exeat weekends and for shorter holidays. There are full boarders, weekly boarders and flexi boarders at the school but 50% of boarders in my DD's house are full boarders. So sorry to hear that bouncy :( I had my Prado for 9 years - it was fantastic and drove really well. It was also superb in the desert. I now have a full size Land Cruiser (plus a SWB LC - desert toy only) and love it. The big one's not getting it's feet dirty in the desert though, no way :D

I don't think it's emirate specific though, just whatever each company feels like doing. As I said I've had red bottles from Dubai, UAQ and RAK. I also currently have a red bottle and a blue bottle (same size) from the same supplier in RAK.

I've had red bottles from Dubai, UAQ and RAK. They contain propane. I have a blue bottle from RAK containing butane and it's the same (~20kg) size as my red propane bottle. It's worldwide, it has nothing to do with which emirate you buy the gas in. http://www.calor.co.uk/products-and-services/gas-bottles/which-gas-bottle ETA, unless of course the UAE does not follow the rest of the world with its gas bottle colours, in which case I am wrong. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 03/05/2014</em>
