No direct flights to Halifax. Only direct EK fight to Canada is Toronto but that only operates Mon, WEds & Fri. That's not a bad price for the time of year. I'm paying AED 33k for 1 adult, a 12 year old and a 7 year old from Dubai to Edmonton.

Deals are not as good when you're not buying the phone as part of the package it seems. I bought my phone with a Du package and got the Super Elite 100 deal. It's aed 100 per month giving 100 texts (50 national, 50 international) 100 minutes UAE calls, 100 minutes international calls and 1GB per month data usage. Etisalat do a similar package for AED 99 per month with 125 texts/minutes etc. My friend got an Etisalat package with an existing phone but had to pay an extra AED 100 for the 1GB data usage. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 01/07/2011</em>

Look also at the Marina where appt tend to be bigger. Torch, I hear from friends, has more space and better finishes than anything they saw downtown. Also from some developments can use the metro easily. I would give Torch a miss - many of the owners are in dispute with the developer.

Norethisterone is a drug prescribed to women who aren't on the pill. It doesn't work for everyone but for many women it can delay a period. I read that somewhere on the Internet and I was considering that but the fact that I actually need to see my GP for prescription put me off a little bit. However if thats the only option I'll do that:( Not sure if it has to be prescribed here or available OTC.

It's a good few years since I flew Gulf Air and although they seem to get a hit-and-miss reputation (I do remember reciting the mantra "don't crash don't crash don't crash) just before landing I do remember that the business lounge in LHR was pretty decent and the Sky Nanny service was absolutely amazing. If other airlines would adopt this Sky Nanny service it would be fantastic (I remember Thai International doing something similar maaaaany years ago).

Exactly. I think for so many people, paying for 6 months quarantine or finding someone to look after their pets when they have to leave in a hurry was prohibitive.

Nope its illegal! Must be on your sponsorship/visa Say, a husband is sponsoring them here and does not mind them working. To my logic, if the NOC from husband is there it's not illegal, yes? ( middle east and logic do not work together but i keep on trying ) Normally this is correct, however housemaids are exempt from this - they have to be sponsored by their employer or an agency.

I don't know where people train for the 1/2 marathon LOL! Running gear will be seen then but I've never seen it on the Corniche. There are gyms in The Hilton Beach resort, Hilton Doubletree, Cove Rotana (also has fitness classes) and Al Hamra Golf Club...which brings us on to golf. There is Al Hamra Golf Club and Tower Links golf Club, both cheaper than Dubai clubs. We have bikes here but would not use them on public roads (only in our community) as it's dangerous enough in a car let alone on a bike. You could cycle safely along the Corniche but it wouldn't give you much of a workout. With regards to updating Carebear's post... Rents are generally cheaper now. "I pay 22 dirhams per hour for a cleaning service who provide all their own cleaning supplies and equipment." [i'>[b'>This is now AED 28 /hr[/b'>[/i'> Fuel costs have gone up, but this is same all over the UAE - fuel prices are set, every fuel station sells at the same price. Golf lessons for the ladies are every Monday morning from 9 - 10 followed by refreshments and costs AED 40; kids lessons are AED 15.00 per hour; Yoga is on a saturday and a wednesday and costs AED 20 per session (fantastic)!!! [u'>[b'>Check websites for Al Hamra and Tower Links[/b'>[/u'> "Spinney in RAK is much cheaper than in Dubai". There is RAK Mall due to open this year which will have a Lulu which should be decent, no other clue as to what will be in there, if anything. There's another beautiful mall completed but looks as if the units haven't been let out yet.[/b'>[/u'> "Dubai is only an hour away if you wanted to make the trip. My husband travels to Dubai for work each day but says its all worth it to live in a peaceful area free of traffic with clean fresh air and lots of greenery" [u'>Mirdif City Cente is an hour away, less to come back, Festival City just over an hour, same for Dubai Mall. Mall of the Emirates can take 1.5 hours. My DH travels to Dubai regularly a hates the drive. The locals are friendly (unless they're driving) and polite but are much more conservative than those in Dubai. I sway between feeling really passionate about it and wanting to help make a change and feeling complete apathy towards those who have such wilful disregard for their children's lives - go on then, endanger your child's life because it's more convenient for you. Darwinism in action. :( Sadly I know exactly how you feel. I sway between pointing at my own seatbelt when I pull up beside unrestrained children and at other times thinking, "As long as my family, and anyone riding in my car is properly restrained then the rest of the world can sort themselves out."

You know, I DO believe ignorance plays a part. Ok, so people see car seats in Mothercare, in Toys R Us, in Carrefour but I'd put money on it that they DON'T know what they're for, not really. I wouldn't be surprised if they're seen as a means of stopping kids crawling about the car and getting in the way. Of course, there's an attitude of wellbeing being in other hands than one's own but as a Brit I was the target of some pretty heavy safety campaigns growing up. We only had 3 (then 4) TV channels and the government used those as a means of getting the message across. Many of us grew up with Jimmy Saville's Clunk Click Every Trip slogan along with the Green Cros Code as well as tv ads that were posted on here. Safety campaigners visited our schools, gave us talks and handed out leaflets, we did cycling proficiency tests. When we were pregnant we received shedloads of info on all aspects of keeping children safe including transporting them safely. We weren't allowed to take our babies home from hospital without showing an appropriate car seat. That level of education just doesn't exist here, or many other places for that matter. Of course there are people that won't be told but I do believe that there are many who simply don't know better. To me, the biggest bl**dy idiots are those that did have the benefit of good safety education but ignore it all once they land here thinking that just because safety isn't enforced here it isn't required.

I don't really fit into your category because I had PRK at the age of 32 :) I was told that I would need reading glasses at a younger-than-average age but only now, over 40 am I starting to notice it, but not enough to need glasses. I think it's more likely to happen, but not a given.

I seem to remember that too. May have been a while ago but you don't forget it, do you? I know I've banged on this drum before but one that sticks in my mind is the UK advert campaigning for people to wear seat belts in the back. A mum driving is killed in a minor shunt when her unrestrained teenage son cannons into her from behind. The lne was something like "xx% of people are killed by someone they know" (playing on the crime figures). It was a long time ago but it worked for me.

*bangs head against wall* So the law is passed and known, but many people don't "get" why. what a long way to go :( ETA More info needs to be put out there (I know Buckle Up is probably responsible for most of the awareness that's happening). People need to learn WHY their kids need to be properly restrained and that will careful care they can choose a car seat that will cost more than aed 400 but will last for years. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 29/06/2011</em>
