For the people who have their own seatbelts on but a child unrestrained, point out how dangerous this is for the strapped-in adult/s as well as the child. An unrestrained child is a missile and probably a heavy one at that, and 15kgs of toddler flying at your head at 50km/h is not just going to give you a headache. I won't drive my car unless everybody, regardless of who they are, is strapped in - for this very reason. I hate to get in someone else's car where they have unrestrained passengers, it doesn't always go down too well when you ask their kids to put their seatbelts on.

If children are restrained from the first time they travel in a car it becomes normal.

If I were to talk to all the mothers of unrestrained kids at our school I'd never get home before school finishes. It's actually quite difficult to find children who ARE restrained. The only ones I see are those kids belonging to friends of mine :(

We bought a beautiful Simmons bed (think you can buy just mattresses) from the bed place on Um Sequiem road. I can't remember the name of it but it's on the corner where yoou would turn to go to Tasjeel and Gold And Diamond park - the last turning before the bridge going over SZR. We tried a memory foam mattress there but decided it wasn't for us, others swear by them. There's a Tempur (memory foam mattress company) place on Al Wasl road.

We're about 4 ft apart, both on our laptops. I'm hoping e's not also posting on EW. I also don't like being home alone. After years of being alone I can cope with it without a problem, but on the flip side, spending so much time alone loses its appeal.

A friend of mine employed a shy maid who would not stand up to her kids. It was a matter of time and nearly 5 years on it all works perfectly with the kids respecting the maid. I think it's perfectly possible to bring her out as JShepherd says, and have her become a good fit for your family. Personally, if you think she'd be good for your family I think she could be worth the time and effort although you'd have to set the ground rules with her in front of the kids so they know that you will support her.

With regards to RAK, the Al Hamra Fort Hotel is well past its best. The one people seem to like the most is the Hilton Beach resort & spa. There's also a Hilton in the city plus a brand spanking new Hilton DoubleTree but not a great location unless you're on business. The Cove Rotana is on a beautiful setting. If you're looking for something top-end try the Banyan Tree Al Wadi. There's another hotel, separate tent-like accommodation - Banyan Tree Al Hamra - but it's difficult to find info about it.

Although I haven't been to Ice Land I think I'd go for Aquaventure as it's a known quantity. My DD loves Ice Land but it's close to us and she's 12 so not the most reliable source. Do a search on Ice Land/Iceland - there are mixed reviews.

Iceland has reduced its prices to 150 for adults, 100 for a child. I haven't been but I've heard mixed reports.

Dreamland. Because it's cheap:) I should add, it's also pretty unpleasant during the summer though as the water isn't chilled so it's like swimming/playing in soup. Aquaventure had nice, cool water in the summer. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 18/05/2011</em>

What she said vvv I would only let my 12 yo child go on a boat trip with people I knew would take proper care and could be relied upon to call me straight away if there was a problem. I wouldn't have so much of a problem with the sleepover part.

shagdash, your child/ren is in elementary, the OP needs feedback on secondary. My kids both went to DIA elementary and I was happy with the school, however I have no regrets that my eldest did not go to DIA secondary after feedback I got from friends who already had kids there. Unless there has been a massive overhaul, the quality of elementary and secondary were not at all comparable.

It IS that easy! I do find it harder to wring my mop out when the head is old and needs replacing. It is simply a case of slopping the mop in the bucket and twisting it really hard in the wringer that sits on top of the bucket. The floor will then be damp but not soaked. As JShepherd says, one floor is dry by the time you're nearly done the next. I would perfect the technique myself then show the miad and tell her that's how it must be done - and make her do it like that. As they say; you don't have a dog and bark yourself *waits for someone to get upset at me calling maids dogs* If my maid refused to do it properly I would have told her that they need to be done right and if she's not willing I would get someone else in to do them but deduct it from her pay. She'd learn how to mop then.

I got the same message from Time Out for the X-Fighters event last month so I think it may be a standard thing if the event is sold-out or mostly sold. I guess they want to avoid everyone showing up half an hour before the show starts. As chizz says, maybe you could pick them up from their offices.

I had a terrible experience with a taxi driver a couple of years ago and reported him to the RTA. They took it seriously then too and called me back a couple of days later to say the driver had been reprimanded and taken of the road for two days as punishment. As a passenger I've often checked the "call us on" number on the back and it matches one of the numbers on the side of the vehicle. Crazy LOL!

My DH isn't an electrician (but is very handy) and he didn't find them difficult to install so your DH would have no problem at all, you'd also save yourself a fair bit of money.

S_D, I'm not sure I understand... are you asking about premium economy or business? In premium, the table is in the seat back of the seat in front of you but you don't have so much leg room that you wouldn't reach it! It's only a few extra inches and the table pulls forward. In business it's a whole different thing because it's the flat-bed seats in their little 'pod' enclosures. Ah yes, I remember now - it's been a few years since I flew BA premium. I got them confused :)

In my case 'they' refer to the people I was dealing with. I don't really want to refer to them by name as I'm having a rant not trying to ruin their reputation. But don't we as expats enable this behaviour? We feel too guilty to actually make someone accountable for the damange they have done to our property because we know that for them to actually pay for it will mean a month's salary. If we all stopped and made people accountable then they WOULD take more care. Its the same with maids and irons - if we stopped and made them replace them, they would take more care. I agree Izzy, we do complain. DH was reimbursed the cost to repair his rims. Initially they just smirked and said sorry, but DH argued that he paid them to replace his tyres, not damage his wheels. I haven't complained about the fridge yet as it's been the weekend, but I will. I don't expect them to do anything about it but I want them to know I'm not impressed. If it's a genuine error I'll let it be known that it's happened and leave it at that but if it's down to sheer bl**dy laziness or stupidity I'll make more noise. Forever21, when we moved the 'movers' aka labourers hired at random, threw paint tins in with DD's towels and pillow. They then dumped the box upside down and I opened it to find everything covered in white paint.
