Of course, that could always be the case but I've got the story from my friend who has first hand experience of just what a nasty bunch of people this family is.

Ignorant people I suppose. I believe the children in the family are not young. I do know that this maid is terrified of them all though.

Why are you wanting to live there? Do you have a nationality that allows you to live there? Can you speak German? Do you have a job to go to?

I would hope that simple has access to logon details, passwords etc. I always log on as DH because I can't remember my own log on details. I bank with HSBC.

DR, the friend who told me is involved with the family, though not happily - so she simply cannot get involved. I'm known to neither the maid nor the family employing her so I could get involved if I absolutely had to. I would drive down there, collect her and take her to the Embassy or POLO office but I would need to know that's 100% what she wants. All I can do is tell my friend what's been said on here and for her to pass it on. If the maid needs my help she can ask. Thanks for the info, I'll let you know if anything happens.

With the Windows FSS (Family Safety Something) you can specify only certain websites, instead of blocking. This way you start with access to no sites at all and add the web addresses of those you feel are safe. My DD can't even get onto Google....

Oh wow! Yes, memories!! NO! Had no idea about dear old Richard!! RC was gay??? Oh my mother will be so shattered!! Yep, My Mum was disappointed. Her drooling over Richard Chamberlain was the only reason we watch Thornbirds. I'm sure we didn't have to endure Magnum PI for the storyline either.

If you don't want to share a family computer you can put tight restrictions on her own computer including which sites she is and isn't allowed to access and also which hours in the day the computer can be used. I control my DD's laptop this way, and I do it all through my own laptop. I think it's fss.live.com It's a Windows thing but I control it from my Mac.

Thanks, DR. She's only been here about 6 months so I'm not sure how clued up she is. I don't know her and I live in RAK so it's not so easy for me to get involved but I will if there's no other option. The person who's closer can't get involved. I'll pass the info on and say that if the maid is too scared to go I'll take her myself if there's no other option and as you say, the decision will then be hers.

Not sure as I'm in Qatar. But I downloaded it via iTunes on my macbook and then did a sync, for what it's worth. Yes it can be downloaded here. I asked because I couldn't get it to d/l. turned out my payment card had expired :)

XE - currency converter. You can select from a huge range of currencies and they will be displayed on a list. You selct one, type in the amount and it will show you the equivalent in all the other currencies on your list. It will use wireless or 3G to update the currencies but you can still use the app without internet at the last updated values. Facebook - of course. And Talking Tom, Angry Birds and Atomic Fart for the kids.

DH bought off road tyres and rims in Sharjah for a really good price. It's just the thought of having to find my way around Sharjah for tyres that gives me the vapours LOL!

Thanks. I suggested writing everything down and taking it to either the Embassy or POLO, but am not sure which place is the best to go to. From what I can make out, being banned is the least of her worries, she just wants to go home.

We get ours in RAK (aed 2300 for my Prado recently) but there are good places in Dubai. I bought my previous set at Technical Resources (Al Khail end of Um Sequeim road) and got a good price there. Also try Max garage further up US road.

Agree with Jane and Claire. I would start their day with milk (and maybe night time too - just make sure you set the limits and stick to them) and after that it's water. As long as you stand firm they will learn that if they're thirsty they'll get water, if they're hungry they'll get food.

I have asked the question and been told that the case involved legal issues which I am not able to divulge on a public forum, but one of the people involved in the whole thing "wanted to reassure those that were taken in by her that she has been rubber stamped out of here so good riddance to bad rubbish!!"

Because EW is the thinking womans google? Because it's much more personal to have a wee conversation and a 'good morning' with your fellow EW'ers rather than a wham bam with google? Because EW is quicker than google? Because everything you read on google is 'right'? Because one persons stupid question is anothers problem that can be helped? Because the world got too impersonal and cut off from society when we learned to inter webby everything? Because what use would EW be if we all took your splendid advice andjustfuckinggoogledit? *applauds* If you don't want to answer someone's stupid effing question then, well......don't......

Anyone else? But low price doesn't always mean the worse service. Friend flew Garuda Indonesia once on very cheap fare from Sydney and said it was fabulous. They may have great service but they were banned from flying into any EU destination between 2007 and 2009 due to safety issues. Admittedly, they have had that ban lifted but I'm not inspired by an airline that's been that low LOL! And ROFL at tombstones over the windows! :)

No, we don't fight over the kids. We did have a minor spat recently but we're generally on the same page when it comes to how we raise them. I think THE biggest thing is being to communicate with each other effectively. It took us a while to get there but now we can discuss rather than fight. They're not always pleasant 'discussions' but they're a lot easier to get over than a full-on fight.
