I charge mine through the laptop every time and it automatically connects to itunes and syncs. It has never given me a message saying it is unlocked. I'd be taking it back to where I bought it if it did!

I'm just trying to dig through the paperwork to see if i can find the place DH used in Sharjah. The place I'm getting a quote for on behalf of the OP is in RAK. They phoned while I was typing. Goldilocks, they are telling me AED 710 each for both sizes of tyre. This was over the phone so I'm not 100% sure we're singing from the same hymn sheet. I will stop in on my way to school tomorrow with the sizes written down and confirm.

RAK, but DH has been to Sharjah for Jeep tyres and got a better deal than he would have done in Dubai, as fairycake mentioned. What's the brand and spec for the tyres? I can get a price and you can decide whether it's worth the drive.

Ahhh... Primary, I think, is ok. DS is doing well there but he has a great teacher. One problem the school has is that many kids cannot speak English, or only speak a little. The teachers are having to balance the needs of these kids whilst making sure that those who do speak good English aren't held back. I know this is an issue in most schools but a class here can have a higher than average ratio of children who don't speak English. Looking at after-school sports activities for years 3 & 4, currently on offer is Fun Fitness for Girls. Are you living in RAK?

Toyota quoted me aed 3750 to replace all four of mine. I got the same tyres at an independent tyre shop for aed 2300 (out of Dubai, mind you).

Are you talking about Secondary School? They have a new Principal who has just started (this week I think). Hopefully he will get the school back on the right track as it seems to have lost its way. As for the ratio, I don't know but boys definitely outnumber girls. The school is over 50% local, maybe this has a bearing. Is the girls school you mentioned the American Academy? I know one child there who is hoping to move to RAKESS after the summer. Despite being an 'American' school it seems to actually be very much more local. It's not my school of choice but it's *ok*. I'm hoping to be out of the UAE before it gets to a critical stage.I'm not sure if you're aware that there's no Middle Years Program at RAKESS? Pupils follow a modified British (English?) curriculum before going on to either IGCSE or IB Diploma. I'm not aware of accelerated courses. What do you mean by group sports for girls? As part of the curriculum or as extra-curricular activities? During school time, secondary school pupils are segregated for PE.

I've never really minded Ramadan, but then that was living in Dubai. Now I'm in RAK I'm not looking forward to it as I think it will be just dead here :(

Emirates Holidays (good but expensive). You can select your holiday online but have to submit an online form for a quote which takes aaages to receive. Look at Jazirat Al Humbra ?? The old abandoned fishing village, the famous "haunted palace " , RAK heritage museum, climb up to Shebas ruins, drive into RAMS - a few old lookout forts Al Jazirat Al Hamra. To get to that you turn left at the roundabout at the 'end' of Emirates road. After about 4 or 5k you'll go past a long line of small shops and businesses on your right followed by a oblongabout with models of killer whales on your left. Shortly after take a left signposted to Al Hamra gate 4 (I think), also signposted A&E as in African and Eastern. At the end the road bears round to the left, go off road to the right. You can't miss the old town on your right. Sheba's palace (built 200 years after she died....) is a little more difficult to find as it's not on a main road but if you find it you're on the same road as some very old tombs (3000 years old plus). Dhaya fort i on the E18/Rams road, on your left as you head towards Mussandam/Oman border. It's signposted and there are steps so you can climb all the way to the fort at the top. there's a coffee shop at the bottom.

No, although I've not done the drive you will pass fuel stations in RAK and if you fill up there you'll have no problem as it's not that far.

Barracuda won't ask for a licence, it's not required in Ajman, UAQ and RAK.

So funny that these guys have stopped the Barracuda management - only in th UAE :o) You CAN buy it from wherever you want but you won't necessarily be legal. According to a poster who spoke to Sharjah Police, a Dubai licence won't cover you to legally transport alcohol through Sharjah.

Yeah, I have that but I find that each event has too many photos in it - for example SCHOOL. it has hundreds of photos in it of both kids doing various things at school. If I want to be more specific such as organising for DS's events at school it means creating a new event which I don't want to do. I already have 157 events and would like to be able to reduce that number so for example I would like to have an Event called SCHOOL 2011 and inside that Event, instead of having 600 photos of the kids doing various things at school I would like to have sub-events such as 'DD school play', 'DS field trip', 'DS Sports Day' and so on. To have only events I have to scroll through (potentially) hundreds of photos inside each event. To have Events for each specific topic I have hundreds of Events to scroll through. Maybe Events aren't the way to go but I don't know what the alternative is to keep everything organised.

Aren't the call costs the same as a regular phone overseas? When I enquired about international roaming at a Du counter the guy I spoke to did warn me not to use it for internet because I would be charged AED 1 per 50kb (although I have no idea how much 50kb is LOL!)

You can't just wander in. To get through the gate security will check you have a reservation. I'm not sure what the cheapest option is.

I got an iPhone yesterday and then saw this :( Am with Du on Post Paid. Get 1GB free data a month and pay 100aed a month for Elite Plan which includes some free national/international calls and SMS. The only advice they gave was to ensure I dont use the Internet connection when roaming abroad as costs are astronomical. They said 1GB a month is generally enough...use it mainly for email/FB but not much browsing the internet or downloading stuff. I am now dreading my first bill!! I'm on the same package as you and find it ok. My second bill was AED 230 which was a bit of a surprise. When I looked through the bill I realised that the 100 free texts are 50 national/50 international - I'd gone crazy sending national texts. I'd also misjudged one of my international calls and the combination of the two pushed by bill up. It's been ok since then. I was concerned about exceeding my data limit but have never come close.

Ok that clears it up a bit... yes what has confused me is the fact that estate agents seem to be unclear in their defnitiion themselves. Are townhouses cheaper? where are the nice ones located? I gather Springs are all villas. But that makes it easier to define thank you! . No, springs are townhouses, Meadows are villas (there are a few exceptions), Lakes are a mixture of both as is Arabian Ranches.

For years I wanted to be flight attendant then stepped it up to being a pilot. A crippling fear of flying kind of put the lid on that. I also wanted to be a travel agent and I still wish I'd gone into that line of work. I ended up in engineering which was never a field I wanted to work in.
