Nice that your kids are so thoughtful and recognise that he's someone who deserves a bit of kindness especially when he's out there in all weathers. edited by sarassister on 05/03/2012

What about trying www.katiemakescakes.com , she makes the most beautiful cakes which are yummy too. Not sure if she does plain ones but she's such a lovely lady and very helpful. It could be worth giving her a call. edited by sarassister on 23/02/2012

When I registered mine, I registered with the UK as I had to give a postal address. My kindle automatically registered me in Dubai even though I was registered with Amazon UK, this caused a few teething problems. Once registered in UK I now have a great selection of books which are very reasonably priced. Be warned it is completely addictive!

Technicians did everything they said they would and even arrived a little early. Clearly knew their stuff and this experience would make me go out and buy LG products as their service was excellent.

I am yet to find a nail salon which ticks all the boxes i.e. high hygeine standard, comfortable chairs with built in foot spas and electronic foot files etc. so that your feet don't get cut when being filed. So if this is the sort of thing you are thinking of a little more up market than the usual I would say yes.

I suffered and found two things helped 1) Acupuncture. I would recommend Steven at Dubai Physiotherapy Clininc. 2) Homeopathy I recommend Dr. Vaneeta at the Dubai Osteopathic Health Centre. She has a very long wait list but if you ever get to see her you will understand why. edited by sarassister on 22/01/2012

The life pharmacy on Al Wasl road, and the pharmacy in Safa Co op have a good range of homeopathics. Also some branches of Marina Pharmacy have a more limited selection as does the pharmacy next to Umm Sequiem Choitrams.

Live in the Greens and love it. Lots of kids around and nice play areas. Phase one appartments al Nakheel, al Jaz and al Sidr tend to be more spacious. Plenty of places to walk and to eat out. Bus to metro and MOE are both fine if you don't drive. I don't have kids but certainly in my buidling the Mums seem to know each other. I love the fact that it's really multi-cultural . Great take aways/ deliveries if you don't want to cook. No traffic hassles like JBR. Feels open and not like concrete jungle. Ground floor appartments can have nice terraces. Really don't want to move from here.

A neighbour of ours woke up at about the same time (5.30am) last week and there was a man in there house. They had forgotten to put the stick back in one of the windows. He ran but had already taken money and phones. Desparate people - although I do wonder as it is the same time as all the newspaper sellers are out and about. A worrying post Scaralex especially as you infer that the newspaper sellers are responsible with NO evidence except that they like many others are up and about because they have a job to do! Their job is hard enough as it is without people thinkng that they are criminals because they work anti-social hours!

You may be lucky in that some schools now do Spanish here too. However if not the positive thing is that by having done these three languages she will have good language acquisiiton skills, that will undoubtedly make this daunting prospect a little easier.

I went to JOnes the grocer this morning and thought the service was terrible. I waited so long for the food order that I tried to cancel it even a coffee took more than 20 minutes to arrive. I was then persuaded to wait and that it was on its way. When it arrived it was lukewarm. There was no one to complain to as the waiter serving my section disappeared. I left wondering what all the hype was about and not sure if I'll ever go back. edited by sarassister on 30/09/2011

"the schools in Dubai don't have proper after school"........... Schools weren't really designed to be baby-sitting services in Dubai or anywhere else.

Sixth form places are largely dependent on results and in most cases are offered before the holidays and confirmation would happen with reults. A later confirmation would most likely be for a wait list place. Dubai's transient population means that last minute places do become available. There was one school last year which did dramatically cut its sixth form places which must have created real problems for parents and pupils. Hopefully tomorrow will bring you the news you have been waiting for

This is not normal policy for most schools in the UAE, British or otherwise. It would be interesting to know which school you are actually talking about before you make sweeping generalisations. That said I hope the issue gets resolved soon for you and your child

Whitesparkle, this must be a very difficult time for you and your Mum. I can recommend a Dubai based homeopath if you want to help your Mum through her treatment. The quality of treatment here is very good I know two people who have been treated succesfully at the american hospital with follow up at the Abu Dhabi Cancer centre for one and in the UK for another (she was leaving Dubai anyway). The doctors at a leading hospital in the UK said he treatment she had received here was superb. To get back to the homeopath it is Dr. Vaneeta at the Osteopathic Health Centre she is a lovely lady but it is very difficult to get an appointment. The other posters have given you some very sound advice and whilst I am a great believer in complementary medicine I think sometimes it needs to be complementary and work alongside conventional medicine. I hope all goes well for your Mum and that you find the right treatment for her. edited by sarassister on 02/09/2011

Try Toad Hall Guest house 10 mins walk from centre of town or there is a premer Inn right in the centre of town but that may be booked up for Jane Austen festival. The festival is big and people come from all over the world for it.

I would choose Bath too. I was in Oxford last week and it was horrific as it was so overcrowded with tourists. I know Bath can get busy but never as bad as that was. Plenty of ideas on trip advisor of things to do and also suggestions for cheaper restaurants.

Ours was closed in July and we could use the nearest pool to us. It sounds like they are doing them in rotation so that tenants can still use a pool.

You could also go down to Chtiwan national park for a couple of nights. It's fantastic. If you wnated a short trek you could go to Pokara which is really beautiful. The flight down along the himalayas is sensational too. I travelled solo in Nepal a few years ago and loved it.

Welcome Fran Where you live will depend to some extent on your budget. Think about if you want a villa or an appartment. some appartments like those in the Greens have nice children's play areas. However do you want to be negociating the lifts with shopping a buggy and two little ones? There are coffee mornings where you can meet other Mums who might have better advice for you than mine. Have a look on websites like Dubizzle to get some ideas. The driving can sometimes be a bit aggressive but most women drive. Go out first when the roads are quieter and you'll soon get used to it. At the moment most activities are indoors as it is so hot and humid. Amazon works well for online shopping. Some people use Aramex shop and ship. You will be able to get most things you need here and there are plenty of familiar shops. Good Luck with the move edited by sarassister on 07/07/2011

I think it will depend on where you live. I live in a village and word of mouth is how I got my cleaning lady. There are always teenagers looking for evening babysitting work. The village post office often has adverts from people looking for this type of work. Another way is other Mums from school/nursery/ playgroup who have local knowledge. Good Luck with your move.

The Boathouse Kata beach. Smaller than Karon, smaller hotel with fab restaurant and cooking school right on the beach. Has small swimming pool too, Bar overlooks the beach. Other restaurants and bars close by. edited by sarassister on 25/06/2011
