I think I kind of understand where your husband is coming from, and a lot of it will depend on what nationality you are. I work full-time as does my husband. However, I am very aware of how my husband views our roles in the marriage - it's very old school, basically he is the breadwinner and I am the homemaker. I know a lot of women will read this and get offended and disgusted at the thought, but for me I'm perfectly happy with this arrangement and quite frankly I wouldn't want it any other way. My husband doesn't mind me working at all, as long as it's not at the expense of our home, children, etc. What this translate to is that I do my 9-6, and then leave the office and go home. I'm lucky because I can take my laptop home, and often after the kkids are in bed and we're just chilled out at night I can resume emails etc. My husband sees it as his role to make money, his role to have the better career, he is the provider. He has no objection to me working, no objection to me moving up within my company as long as it doesn't affect our home. He doesn't expect me to contribute to the household either - my money is mine. I work because I choose to work, and he is supportive of that, but likewise I can stop working anytime I want. I take care of the house, the cooking, the kids, etc. My husband doesn't really care how it's done, whether I hire ten maids or whatever, but it's my responsibility. For me this set-up works and I'm really happy. i don't have any resentment towards him about it at all. I think nationality plays a role in this because in some societies roles are clearly defined whereas in other societies there is no definitive line. I really think you need to talk tro your husband and he needs to explain to you what his issue is. Sometimes, it's not right to handle such issues with a stubborn mind, you need to compromise. I don't think men deal with change very well either. Plus, he might be worried about the future - does this mean you will now be putting kids on hold, that you'll start going on business trips, that you'll work even longer hours later?

How bad is the rain in Phuket in August? We're booked to go in August and I'm worried it's going to just rain non-stop for the whole five days.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. From my understanding, you don't need to pay this ticket until you reregister your car. The fine will show up in a few days online and you will be able to see the amount and you also have the option of paying it online. Personally, I don't think it's worth it to go to the police station to find out this info. HTH. Yes this is correct. All traffic fines don't need to be paid until you renew your car registration. Having said this, if your car is registered to a company, or there is more than one car under your name, then you cannot renew the registration of any of the cars under the same name/company until all cars have their traffic fines paid Highland lass, if you wait a couple of days then you can find out the details and amount of the violation online (go to the Dubai Police website and then somewhere on the home pages there is a link for traffic violations). In general I think it's better to wait to pay all traffic violations, this is because the RTA will have a "sale" on traffic fines at some point during the year which runs for about a month. What basically happens is that traffic violations are reduced by 40% - it's not all fines, I think Salik is exempt and I'm not sure abaout parking fines. Last year my husband's 700 dhs speeding fine was reduced to 430 dhs, so definitely worth waiting.

Parking fines are 200 dhs if you are fined for not having a ticket at all. 150 dhs are fines for when you have a ticket but the time has elapsed.

Mols as kiwispiers says, you should check with your doc now. My doctor knew from day one that I would be delivering in the UK and she told me the last date that she would allow me to fly. Closer to the time she may advise you to travel earlier if she thinks you wont carry the baby full term, but your doctor is the best place to start. Like I said, the airlines don't usually create issues if you have the signed note and all the correct paperwork.

I flew at 35/36 weeks with both pregnancies on a 7-hour flight. The airline had no issue at all as I had the correct paperwork from the doc. As someone mentioned, the harder part is getting ur doc to agree for you to fly out so late in your pregnancy - it's usually fine if your pregnancy has been easy and you're low risk.

I can't believe you got sacked for being pregnant!! Anyways, that aside, to answer your question I highly doubt that any GP/hopsital in the UK is going to turn you away if you just show up pregnant. The only thing they will do is make you pay. It sounds like either way you're going to pay so if the UK makes you more comfortable then I would go with that.

Despite my last comment, you do get some good deals. Dxb19, you might as well wait a couple of weeks until the sales start (some already have by the way - I stocked up for my daughters from Monsoon over the weekend as they started their sale on Friday). If you find anything in the sales then great, if you don't then you just buy full price so no harm done. Some shops do scam on the sales, but with others they do have proper sales.

ymmymm.. i want fatoush... just to mention that many people do not add pomegranate molasses to fatoush and are enough with sumac, lemon and olive oil. actually in my opinion this salad is not called fatoush if there is no sumac and grilled bread in it. but i personally love pomegranate with fatoush. I make fattoush without the pomegranate molasses. I think in Lebanon pomegranate molasses is a must, whereas where i'm from in Syria - Aleppo - we just add lemon, olive oil and sumac. I also add salt and cumin. Plus if I don't have fresh mint then I also add to it dry mint as well. If you eat Fattoush at a restaurant at a restaurant in Aleppo then we also add cheese to it. Zaatar Wa Zeit add halloumi cheese to their fattoush, and personally it's my favourite part :)

I've found that if you're dealing with a call centre and you have a bad experience then send a complaint email through their website as it seems to go through the right channels. They call you the next day bending over backwords to make you happy.

The lady said this to me today aat the checkout at Choithrams. She said, "I hope your day is full of goodness". Apparantly I'm way more cynical than you are...I noticed that is Choithrams slogan, and then my first thought was "poor woman, made to recite the slogan to every shopper"... Blast! You have burst my bubble! Oh well, it gave me a warm and gooey feeling but thanks for the heads up! Shows how much notice I take of slogans! Loool Shamat!!! Sorry to ruin your day!! I thought it was such an odd way to say have a good day, and I was packing my own bags (yes I'm one of those idiots that helps the cashier with my own packing) so I looked at the bag, and low and behold it all fitted together. Lol in fairness had she said it with a remote ounce of enthusiasm I might have believed that she meant it!!

Kittycat you just send an SMS to 7275 with the following: License plate number space parking location code space number of hours required So say you're in a zone with the code 324A, your license plate number is A12345 and you want to park for one hour you text the following: A12345 324A 1

I don't think it's because Arabs think about it differently. I think it's because most Arabs have not had the concept of seatbelts drilled into the brain from as far back as they can remember. I'm Syrian, and people there don't wear seatbelts at all - I remember once as a child, 17 people all packed into one car (17!!!). When we have guests over I make them buckle up, and I've even had people ask me how the seatbelt works!! I'm not saying this is true about everyone or generalizing, but a lot of people just don't grasp the pure basics of car safety. I don't think there is any harm at all in bringing it up, but say your piece once and then drop the subject, else you may cause tension.

Lol fair enough! Whether the two pools are open or not its the same story. My theory is that management are too cheap to properly maintain the pools so they obviously cut a bunch of corners in the initial building (hence all the mosaic tiles falling off). Secondly, heating and cooling pools costs money, I presume they just switch them on and off for additional cost saving. To keep everybody happy they will have one pool warm. I mean these pools have thermostats so maintaining a constant temperature should be easy, it just costs money. Anyways thats just my thoughts!!!

the little pool in East Heights has been closed for a little while, and the middle pool is really quite chilly. It will be nice in a month or so but it's cold for the current outside temp. I don't know how long you've been in ET MPH but it will never be nice! They never get it right. I've been here two and a half years and its always the same. Saturday is our family swimming day, so three Saturdays we went down. The small pool was open but freezing, the middle pool was great - fantastic temperature, warm rather than cold, it was really enjoyable - the large pool was cold. So because the middle pool was so great, two Saturdays ago we went down and I decided to take my 11-month baby as well. We get down, the small pool is closed off, the medium pool was freezing, and the large pool was okay but leaning towards the cold side. We ended up alternating between the large pool and sitting in the jacuzzi, but didn't really enjoy either. It's so frustrating that they can't get it right. It would be okay if the pool temperatures were consistent, even if that meant they were colder - at least you go down knowing what to expect. I hate getting everybody excited about swimming and then we cant swim properly. I really hope the pool closure means they sort out the issues now. We have frequently used the pools throughout the whole year, and the issue is always the same.

DH emailed Taziz regarding west heights pool - it's been delayed till the end of June now. Seriously??? Plus why did they decide to do this maintenance work right when people decide to start using the pool?? All I can say is the water had better be of an acceptable temperature...I'm sick of taking my kids down and then having them swim in the jacuzzi or taking them back home because the water is freezing!!! And apparently they're going to close the East Heights pool once the West Heights pool reopens...

Najoom, the British Embassy here cannot speed up the passport process for your husband. The new passport has to be issued through the centre in Dusseldorf. What they can do is provide your husband with temporary travel documents that allow him to still travel. I'm not sure what the procedure is, so my advice is to call the embassy directly and they will let you know what needs to be done.

Just to add my piece on this, I'm not sure how TSmith99 got her child re-registered, but I went through this with my daughter. As i had already registered her and didn't have a card, you have to now go to one of the Emirates ID centres (not the typing centres) with your child's passport and request that they retrieve the details of your child's registration. You cannot submit a new application as their records will now exist twice. Likewise, you cannot just ask for a renewal without a copy of the letter. I caller the Emirates ID helpline and they confirmed that this is the case and you have to have somebody go to one of the three Emirates ID locations to get this print out from the system.

Anyone can go and submit the papers for you or your husband at one of the typing centres. You just need to fill out a form (which you do at the typing centre) and take with you the original passport. They then send you a text message with an appointment for when he needs to go in person for the fingerprints, photo, etc. Be warned, this appointment will be months away!

I flew back at 35/36 weeks for both of my pregnancies. Absolutely no problems at all. I think as long as your pregnancy has been straightforward and your doctor is happy to give you a note (dated within one weeks of travel) then you don't have any issues. Trust me the doctor would refuse to sign the travel note if they thought there was even a one percent risk, apparently they get held liable if something goes wrong (not sure how accurate that is though!). About what to buy, my personal recommendation is don't buy anything for your baby from Dubai and take it with you. Anything that you need for the first few months just buy them from the UK whilst you're there (so clothes, pushchair, moses basket, bottles, breat pump, etc). Having said that I wouldn't bother to buy things like wipes and toiletries and bring them back. Yes they are cheaper in the UK, but when you're travelling back you don't want to have to worry about excessive luggage as well as a newborn baby. Some things aren't worth the hassle in bringing back, but it really depends on you.

I think there's only four apartments or something that have them though. They're on the very top floors of the buildings, in what I think maybe the pent houses. Yes but not all parents teach their kids, cmon you only have to look at some of the adults around to know that! 'Common sense' is not so common, I'm sure the same goes for manners... Also not everything translates directly into English. I once worked with several Indian girls who were realy annoying me with "give me this" and "I want that" and when I asked them to say thank you as it was rude not to they said that's not how it's done in India, so I had to explain if you are speaking English to an English speaker it's considered rude to be so direct. They got it, and said please and thank you for the remainder of the time we worked together. But they explained that until I had said this to them they had no idea. So no, I don't think in cases it's common sense, sometimes culture/ upbringing comes into it and some people just don't know any better until you tell them. It'd be like me going to traditional dinner with Arabs and not knowing I shouldn't pass food with my left hand- I wouldn't know this unless someone had told me, and that could be considered a very rude faux pas!! Completely agreed. At work I deal with people in offices pretty much all over the world and the tone of emails is so different depending on the location/nationality. I have often commented on how abrupt or rude some nationalities are, whereas other nationalities overdo the politeness (if you know what I mean). It's part of living in a multicultural society, we just have to accept that people do things differently and that usually the intentions are not bad.

Hi cddsmum, my sister-in-law has held back both of her sons and made them repeat grade one out of her own choice. In fact, with her second son, the school were completely against it but she was adament. To compare, she did not make her daughter repeat a grade. She swears it the best decision that she has ever made for both children. Her reasons were similar to what you are saying, for reasons of maturity, etc, and the difference in her children now is incredible. They have more confidence, better skills, and by no means do they feel older or out of place since repeating the grade. They weren't as advanced as the rest of their classmates, and now even though they are slightly older than the other children, intellectually, socially and maturity, they fit in perfectly. I don't think you should be too worried about it, especially since you yourself are saying that part of you knows it is the right decsion. Children mature differently, and it doesn't really matter if they graduate at 17 or 18, age really is just a number. Just make sure that your child understands why they are repeating the year. Also, I would try and ensure that the school puts them with a different teacher to the one that they already have so that its not more of the same and they feel like they have also changed classes in the same way that their classmates have.

Oh wow, I did not expect this thread to turn into a little girl hate campaign. My daughter is 4 and a half, and she's polite and kind but also can hold her own - maybe I'm just lucky?? Yes women can be mean at times, but that's just because we operate on so many different levels. With regards to your post SB, don't take it so personally. My guess is that the girl was taught to not accept anything from strangers (I know she knows you!), or she's just plain shy. Kids have a way of speaking their minds that only they can get away with, I'm sure she didnt know she was upsetting your daughter. Plus kids are resilient, my guess is that two minutes later your daughter had completely forgotten about it, whereas weeks later you still can't get over it!

I don't think they put everyone on the first flight out, it very much depends on what you failed the blood test for. I know somebody who had a maid who failed the Hep B test, and they basically gave her 30 days to leave the country - no confinement or anything. Some people are natural carriers of Hep B so its not and immediate risk to society. Whereas I thik if you fail the HIV test then it is automatically reported to the authorities and you are put in confinement.

There's this small shop/stand in Dubai Mall on the 2nd floor as you walk from the waterfall to Kinukuniya that seem to have a sale on. I think they've just opened. I didn't look at what they had because I don't need sunglasses, but I walked past twice on Saturday and got ambushed by the sales lady who told me they have big discounts on. They seem to have lots of brands so it might be worth checking out.

Hey Ladies Hope you can help… My daughter is desperate to celebrate her birthday this year after going to so many of her friends parties but the problem is she gets overwhelmed by the loudspeakers they use at these kids parties, etc. and then doesn't enjoy herself. I would love to arrange a party for her but need ideas of venues and arrangements somewhere a bit more low key so she can enjoy her own party Would love to hear of any ideas please TIA Try Safe Play in Jumeirah Plaza on the Beach Road. Its a small play area, and there is a Dome right by it so that the parents can sit and have coffee whilst watching the children. Perfect for that age range. I had my daughter's 4th birthday party there and I really like it because you really do get the whole play area to yourself, even on a Friday. They do a couple of party games with the children in a place just next to the play area, so I'm sure you could ask them to do it without any microphone as the place is small enough, or just go without the party games altogether. The other thing is that the packages are really decent, i think they have three options 65, 75 or 125 Dhs per child.

Worst theme park I have ever been to. We went last year and the two biggest rides were closed (based on the responses below, are they ever open?!!). I was pregnant at the time, and there was about two rides I could go on, which was fine because I wasnt expecting to ride anyways. I then found a ride to take my daughter and my friend's son who were both 3 and it said there was no restriction for pregnant ladies. Once I got on and had the kids strapped in, the guy wouldn't let the ride start and asked me to get off. I told him there is no restriction for pregnant ladies, he said that's true but they want to take extra precaution - this was a ride for under 1 metres and it was just one of those reaally slow trains that drives through different scenes, no speed, bumps, etc. I ended up in a huge fight with management, the two children were crying their eyes out because they wanted to ride, and nobody at the park could care less. I'm happy to follow the rules, but in this case the ride was fine and they still wouldn't let me on. I'll never go again.

Get a cheap pack of blank cd's or a load of old scratched ones, and hang them from twine, string or ribbon. Hang them from trees, balconies...makes a pretty mobile effect in your garden when the wind blows through them, and it keeps the birds away. My mom's gardener in the UK recommended this idea and proceeded to set them up. It didn't work at all!!! The birds continued to happily destroy the garden and just walked around the CDs, lol they weren't even remotely scared. Not to mention that all the CDs hanging from string looked hideous!

Hi Bawn, Tower G is the newest tower, that is correct. All of the other towers were handed over ages ago. Tower H, B, L, M, K are all two and a half years old. Then I think E, F & C were handed over about a year ago if not more. Tower G is literally being handed over now. What I heard is that Tower G has been purchased by a company (I think First Gulf Bank) and there was a problem on its financing or something like that, hence the delay in it being handed over. I live in a 3-bed in Tower H and my bedroom faces Tower G and so it definitely has not been occupied before the last few weeks. If you wouldn't mind sharing, what prices are being quoted for Tower G? In terms of Empower, Alison I am absolutely shocked by how you have to pay (nearly 4,000 Dhs in September!!). Bawn, every apartment is different and it depends on the size obviously and which direction your apartment faces. Our demand is 600 per quarter (for a 3-bed) but I know of people that live in a two-bed in Tower B that pay a demand of 1,800 per quarter. Consumption then is charged monthly and comes on top of your demand. Our Empower bill has never been more than 5 or 600 dhs in a month, but like Alison has said below I have friend in Tower C that paid upto 2,000 in a month. The demand is usually the biggest chunnk of the Empower bill and the consumption isn't as bad, in the summer months its literally 20 or 30 dhs, in the summer 4 or 500 dhs. I don't really know what to advise you. It might be worth ringing Empower and asking. Or before you sign your contract, ask people that have recently moved into Tower G and face the same side as the apartment you are considering. Finally, with regards to the podium, there are a loads of kids and maids on the podium after about 5pm everyday. You are right that primarily it's maids that are out there and not mothers, but there are some moms (me being one of them), who generally look desperate to talk to other moms! I have a 4 and a half year old girl, so if you do move in let me know and we can meet on the podium one day. Kicking a ball is technically not allowed on the podium, neither are pets...but I have seen both, so it pretty much depends on what mood Security are in!!

No I've flown several times in both my pregnancies and it was fine. Airlines require you to have a letter issued by your doctor dated within one week of travel to verify that you are fit for travelling. I think the letter is needed from 28 weeks, but if your stomach is big or anyone questions you, then it would be better to have the letter on hand anyways.

I read the guidance notes, for a renewal of a child's passport you need a countersignatory, but not for adults. I presume it's because children can't sign for themselves or fill out their own passport so it's some sort of protection for them. The countersignatory has to have known me and not the child, so to limit fraud I guess. I just filled out the smart form for the signatory online, because the boxes have to be filled else you can't print and my countersignatory signed and certified the photo. I'm hoping it will be fine!

I know you have narrowed it down to four (so my post will probably confuse you further!), but I would seriously consider Canon. I had Sony cameras for many years, so did my mom and various other people, and yes they're okay, but the photos aren't as good as Canon and the camera seems to pack up after a couple of years and you need a new one. I absolutely love my Canon, the quality of pictures is so much better and i would never buy a Sony camera again (I recently bought a Canon video camera and I am very happy with that as well). My mom has had the same experience as well. I've never tried Nikon, but i hear ther're very good as well, and most photographers say that Nikon is the best brand to buy.

I saw one in Koton Dubai Mall yesterday. It was knee length and flowy rather than fitted. Not sure what you're looking for.

Another question on the renewal process, and this may be a stupid question! I'm filling out the smart form and for the countersignature part, it says to fill it out in ink in capital letters. However, there are also boxes that you can type into. I presume that I should type in the details of the countersignatory and then have them just sign - is that correct?
