Wore a pair from New look for 14 hours straight last weekend. No problems or sore feet :-) I find the more expensive and pretty they are the more they hurt! Completely agreed...most of my office shoes are from New Look and they're super comfortable, especially the wide fit shoes. I struggle to find comfortable shoes, because I have wide feet, but New Look's shoes are great! Having said that, there are some shops that don't suit me at all, such as Aldo, I find the quality really bad and the shoes uncomfortable.

I think you can still have Soya milk, which tastes horrible but from everybody I know that has to have they say that you get used to it and it's better than nothing. In terms of the other things, I think most gluten-free products should be ok. I'm not an expert so you have to check, but of so I know that the Organic supermarket had a gluten free section and there are some gluten free products in the regular supermarket.

New Look do a wide fit for some of their shoes and they go up to a UK size 8. Lol in fact the size 8s are always the ones left on the shelf when it comes to the cute designs! Not quite Jimmy Choo, but a big selection of shoes, very reasonable prices, comfortable and you don't feel bad throwing them out when they get tatty!

I haven't done it yet, but I need to renew my daughter's process so I have been reviewing the process. Apparently a simple renewal takes 4 weeks and you have to courier it off to the centre in Dusseldorf. The website explains the process quite well, so as long as your application is correct and you have enclosed the right supporting documents then it should be straightforward. I've seen a few posts on here where people have confirmed that it does take four weeks. If you need to travel urgently, then I read on the website somewhere that the UK Embassy here can issue you with temporary emergecy travel documents, but I have no idea what the process for that is. In the meantime go and enjoy the day at the pool :D

Thanks for sharing Jules :) I never know how much to rely on these reports, but as next year will be the first year I have a child at school it's reassuring to know that the school she is going to continues to be rated as "good"!

To be honest I have found that sometimes the airports are relaxed and other times they aren't - it's hit and miss. I have often taken in bottles of water without even realising it and not been stopped. I find Dubai airport is less strict than say Heathrow, but other people might tell you otherwise. In any case, you are allowed to take water for feeding babies, what they usually do is ask you to do is taste it in front of security, that's what I had to do flying back from Heathrow last month. I would take your water with you and see how it goes, you just have to explain to security and offer to taste it. At worst they just take the water from you and you will have to buy from the airport.

I'm pretty sure you forfeit your rights when you sign a non-renewable contract. Even if the landlord agrees for you to stay, then he can do pretty much what he wants with your rent as it's not bound by the previous year.

Anyone know the number for Apollo Flight Centre, and their opening times? I've checked on the website, but there is no answer onthe number posted - plus I don't think that is the actual number for the Business Bay branch as it starts with a 3.

Happy Panda, your husband definitely needs a new card. Now there is something that says that for people that have residencies that expire in 2012 they don't need to renew, but my PRO told me that this is specifically for children as they have an extended grace period, and that all adult need to have a valid card by the 1st June regardless of when their residency expires. It might be worth calling them to verify this. For the renewal, it will cost your husband around 270 dhs to renew his card now. If he chooses not to do it then he will be fined 20 dhs for everyday upto a maximum of 1000dhs. So come August he'll have to pay the 1000 as a penalty. I think it makes more sense to have him renew now at one of the typing centres. Just another piece of info that several people seem to not realise is that all maids also need valid ID cards. I know a few people that didn't realise their maid required an ID card as well as all family members.

@SEY83 - we will have to do same thing ours are fine now but kids - applied/registered in 2010 and they didn't ned cards. Now not sure what to do, tried to call but useless as we don't have the correct ref number (!) to check on it ("it has to start with 8!!") so e need to take our papers and go to the ID place. Could u pls let me know exaclty what u had to do oly in ref to the kids? Thanks Sorry MaiTai I only just read your post. I was able to speak to somebody on the phone and they explained the process, my husband then did it so it does work! U need to go to one of the three ID registration centres in Dubai (Rashidiya, Karama or Barsha). You can go at anytime and you don't need an appointment. All you need to take with you is your child's passport and then wait in line for your turn (it took my husband about an hour and a half at the Karama Branch). All they do is use the passport details to retrieve your child's previous registration and then they print off a copy for you. You can't do the renewal without this paper. Then to make it even more difficult, you can't just submit the renewal docs there and then, you have to go back to the typing office and give them your child's passport plus the proof of registration that was given to you. One good point is that the deadline for ID cards for children is the 1st October, so they have a longer grace period than everyone else. So if you only have to renew your children's cards then I suggest you wait until after the 1st June when the registration centres will be calmer.

Here is a complete list of typing centres for all Emirates: http://www.eida.gov.ae/en/process-and-fees/registration-plan.aspx I would still call the centre before you go though because I have found that some of the information on the Emirates ID website is a bit dated.

Lallie - they look at the date that your visa was issued and charge you from that date, not from the date of application. So like my residency was renewed in October (so automatically your ID expires). I'm going to renew now, but rather than pay for 2 years, they will charge me the full 3 years (actually I would pay 3 years anyways, but say my visa has expired in Feb of 2011). Moose - the charges will be 20dhs per day up to a maximum of 1000dhs. Now I'm not sure if the charges will be calculated from the 1st June, or will it be calculated from the date of your new residency, in which case by the 1st June you will pay the full 1000Dhs. As yours is a renewal, you can just get it done at a typing centre that does renewals, just take your passport and old ID card with you. They then send you the new card by courier. Much less painful than going to the actual ID registration centre.

Completely agreed SpongeMonkey! I did the right thing and got it done early...basically paid the first time round for nothing and now I have to make a backdated payment. Plus we had to go to the Emirates ID place to get a letter for my daughter to say no card was issued (because 2 years ago they didn't issue cards for children!!) in order to be able to renew for expired ID. The place was packed and my husband had to wait in a long queue before he was served. Serves us right for getting it done early :(

I had one done about 3 months ago...I was terrified! The nurse said you will feel it but not the pain. I had it done with the drip in the hand and didn't feel a thing. In fact I wasn't even awake as the nurse said I would be, I was totally out of it. Altho after the nurse said I was talking to the doctor during the procedure...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I do not remember that!!! To be honest, you get so freaked out about the actual procedure that you don't realise that the prep is the worst thing, it killed me. Definitely don't plan to go out the day before, you have to do the liquid diet. The once you start taking the Colon Clean solution (or whatever it's called) and the laxatives...OMG....you'll pretty much spend the night in the bathroom. Believe me, the prep is way worse than the actual procedure.

I love my iPhone!!! I would never get any other phone. Search other posts and you'll find me raving about it!! In terms of where to buy it from, I would say the UK from the Apple Store. I'm not sure if it's cheaper, but of nothing else you ensure that all the functions are available and it's unlocked. Definitely don't buy straight from Etisalat. Oh and save yourself hassle and download whatever apps u really want from the UK too, particularly things like Skype which are blocked here.

I've been in a similar situation to OP, I was once at the pool at one of the hotels on Yas Island with my family and friends and a lady walked straight through the pool area with her 2 year old (my guess) in a pushchair. The hotel has two pools divided by a bridge so she walked straight through the middle. Anyways near the edge of the pool the child suddenly throws up, and not like baby spit-up, more like adults puking their guts out. Needless to say it went everywhere, but thankfully not in the pool. The mother, grabs one of the hotel towels, sort of mops her child and just carried on walking as if nothing has happened!!! I was mortified, there was sick everywhere, loads of children and adults at the pool and like in OP's story, she didn't have the decency to even tell one of the hotel staff to clean it up. As soon as I saw her walk away, I alerted the hotel staff and they cleaned it up very quickly. Now u would excuse the lady, maybe think she rushed off to tend to her sick child...but no, ten minutes later I saw her chatting away on the other side of the pool, child still covered in puke...honestly I was disgusted. Although hardly surprising that the mother couldn't be bothered to alert the hotel staff if she can't be bothered to clean her child... One year on and I am still mortified!!!

New Look do maternity clothes, nice and fashionable and very affordable. Its only stocked at two or three branches in Dubai though. It used to be only the Deira City Centre branch which was annoying to get to, but I'm sure some of their other branches now carries maternity, I just cant remember which ones! Best bet is to ask at any New Look store. Also Mothercare and Mamas and Papas are worth checking out as they have large ranges.

Please pass the secret on to me once somebody tells you!! My 2nd is now 10 months and my weight isn't budging. I'm still breastfeeding, but I'm one of those women that doesn't lose weight breastfeeding as I'm always hungry. I have now officially started my diet nad I'm hoping for results, unfortunately I don't think there's any quick fix, it's the classic exercise and diet. Some people are just very lucky and lose the weight quickly, with others it takes a lot more hard work. My stomach has definitely retracted a lot over the last few months and I go to the gym and as a result the wrinkly skin doesn't exist anymore. I think your skin just stretches out a bit and you loses the wrinkles once the weight comes off.

I found out what was being done to the windows! ours have stopped POPping! and the sunshades are back. Seems like they have replaced seals or something. good work! I heard there are yoga classes twice a week in the gym, can anyone confirm or if there are any other classes? Is Tips & Toes open yet, was due for 15th? Any more new openings on the horizon? :) Oh interesting about the windows! We never had that issue...but seriously I cant believe it took them 2 and a half years to fix them! The security guy in the gym told me that there are a group of ladies that have organised some sort of group exercise class with aa personal trainer. I got the impression that the classes weren't advertised for all but they were legit and agreed with management. He said they're in the gym (West heights) on a few evenings after 6pm aand suggested talking to them to see if anyone can join. I haven't actually seen these ladies yet tho! Tips & toes not open yet...

No apparently not. When they first started the process, children under 15 had their details taken, photo, etc, but we were told that they don't need the physical card, hence none were issued. Now my daughter's residency has expired so she needs to "renew" her emirates ID with her new residency details. Apparently to renew, for anybody, you have to send your old card and your passport and just go to one of the typing centres. The rules are now that everybody has to get a card, but I obviously don't have a card to send, but as my daughter's details are on the system I need to process the new ID as a renewal and not a new card. Anyways, in case anybody has to go through the same process, I finally managed to get somebody on the phone. I do need to go to one of the Emirates ID locations and take her passport with me and they will locate her details and then issue the required letter for renewal (yay can't wait for that trip!). And no, you can't then just submit her application then and there, so I have to go back to the typing office and give them the documents to process the ID renewal. Serves me right for getting my ID card when they first announced it...the forms and process have all changed so much since this all began...

I registered my daughter for the Emirates ID back when this whole process started and I now need to renew the card for her. At the time, cards were not mandatory for children and so my daughter doesn't have one. I have now been told that she needs a letter from the Emirates ID centre or the Empost desk stating that she doesn't have a card in order to be able to process her renewal. Has anybody had to do this? If so, how easy/hard is it and what documents did you take with you? I've tried searching online but can't find any info. Thanks so much!

I have a friend that wont buy perfume from anywhere else. She says they're better than perfume shops because what is being sold are tester bottles and so the scent is stronger. The reason why they're cheap is that testers are usually not for sale I presume? She goes to the same shop in Satwa (don't know the name), I've never bought from anywhere like this myself though.

They tend to be big superstores in the UK, so you wouldn't find a Matalan in your average highstreet. The mall next to where I'm from in the UK had one, but as a separate large building.

I've done both options. when I first had my daughter we lived in a two-bed apartment and didnt have room for maid, and so I did the part-time agency option. It did work out well, the agency sent me the same lady, etc. The problem is that there were many days where our nanny was "sick" (sorry for the quotations but we're talking 4 or 5 days per month). The agency would send me a different lady, but I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my baby with someone i didnt know, which inevitably meant I took days off work. It worked out well I would say, but in all honesty even though they sent me the same maid, they only really lasted for a few months and would leave the company, so it was also a lot of headache. Plus, you need a very supportive boss to make this work, as it's pretty much impossible to be flexible at work, etc. The agency nanny did the household chores when the baby was asleep, etc. For the last couple of years I have had my own live-in nanny now that we have moved, and the difference has been huge. If you can find somebody that you are happy with and you have a maid's room then its definitely better. I was skeptical about having somebody living with me full time, but to be honest the maids make themselves discreet, and you can agree with her that once you get home that she doesn't have to work anymore and so she can go to her room. I think the idea of having a maid at home is much more difficult than the reality. Plus, you get the advantage of not having to worry about her not turning up, ensuring that your baby is happy with the maid and comfortable with her, and you have a better personal relationship with the maid so you feel happier. From my experience, my maid adores my children and treats them very well, and in turn they love her, so I go to work with peace of mind.

Thanks Guys! I wil try Mushrif park this weekend. Is that one close to Mirdiff? Do you know if theyve got Family pool for men and women as my husband will join as well? There are two pools, one for men and one for women. It would be worth calling them to see if there are timings when one of the pools becomes mixed. Their number is 04 288 3624. There is also an age limit (if you have a son) for boys to enter the women's pool, I believe it's 5 years old. Plus you need a swimming cap, which you can buy there. It all sounds a bit tedious, but I think it's partly why they have been able to keep a public pool well maintained. It's nothing fancy, but certainly does the job and doesn't cost an arm and a leg like some of the other public swimming facilities.

As shamat said the Jebel Ali report do this. Also, the Royal Meridien are well-trained in such events. They will organise games for you, such as team building "fun" games, and then also mini football, volleyball. boat racing, etc. Basically you choose what you want. They obviously also do the catering and set-up.

Mishrif Park has a swimming pool, but there are separate pools for men and women (the women's pool has a large pool and a kids pool). It's about ten dirhams to get in, and you have to wear a swimming cap. I haven't been in a couple of years, but it was clean and generally quite empty.

My baby is nine months, but has been able to sit up since she was about 7 months, so usuaally I just sit her on the floor and put pillows around her. The good thing is that she doesn't crawl yet! If there is nothing around that will harm the baby then I suggest you just sit him on the floor, especially if you are in the room. If you need to leave him for a minute then strap him into his high chair, at least you know he cant get out of that. The other thing that I have is a baby walker. Some people against the baby walker, but personally I'm a big fan of it and several doctors have reassured me that they are fine as long as you don't leave them for long periods of time in it. The good thing about the baby walker is it gives the baby freedom to move, but as it has a big base they can't really reach things so I think it's quite safe. you can also block off the area that you allow the baby to move in which is helpful as well.

Great, thanks for that. Its basically somewhere to crash for the night. DH is suggesting HIlton resort (our usual weekend away stay), but I think it will be a waste if we have been all day at the water park. Will look into all options but at least I have somewhere to start, thank you! I also think the Hilton (if you mean the resort and spa) is quite far from Iceland. Both Hiltons are actually in town (about a 15-20 minute drive), whereas the Hamra Complex is on the same stretch of road as Iceland. I think the Rotana Cove is also on that same stretch of road but pricier. I've seen deals on booking.com for the Hamra Village for 600 Dhs bed and breakfast for a junior suite. It's nothing super fancy like the Hilton, but will definitely do the job. ETA I think there are Iceland vouchers in The Entertainer as well. edited by SEY83 on 19/04/2012 <em>edited by SEY83 on 19/04/2012</em>

Also, the Hamra Complex is pretty much next door. There are three hotels there: Hamra Beach Resort and Hotel, Hamra Beach Palace and Hamra Village. They're all pretty good, I think the Hamra Beach Resort and Hotel is the most expensive and most luxurious. I have stayed at the Hamra Beach Palace which is basically hotel apaartments converted into a hotel, i.e. the "rooms" are huge, but it looks like an apartment, you miss out on the feel of a hotel, but get a ridiculous amount of space. The Hamra Village has just been renovated. Don't stay in a classic room as they are tiny, but the junior suites are very decent and only a couple of hundred dirhams more expensive. They basically look like townhouses, but they're nice and do the job. You can usually get very good deals for the Hamra Village on booking.com

It's actually not that bad AmyAus as Dragon Mart is pretty well divided into sections, so as long as u know which section you are going to, then u can park straight next to that door and not have to worry about walking around too much. The curtains are in sections F or G, so when you're looking for parking look for the doors that are marked "FA" or "FB" depending on which side of the mall you're on, then you will only have to look around that area. Just make sure you take note of what shops you're parked next to when you enter so you don't get lost. It's a bit of a maze when inside, but you will find several curtain shops in that section and there are information desks that can help you. I def don't want to be responsible for tiring you out, but if you can handle most of Dubai's malls then Dragon Mart isn't that bad. Just make sure you keep note of your bearings!

If you can find out the dress code of the place where she works then it makes a huge difference, some places are really strict whereas others aare very casual. For example, where I work the dress code is smart-casual. Pretty much any dresses are allowed, we're also allowed to wear leggings...anything other than jeans really (although you can get away with black jeans)! Then on Thursday's jeans are allowed, so we can dress casual. Maybe a couple of dresses would be a good option as well, at least you know she will re-use them later...no need for them to be too formal. Definitely a pair of black trousers. Someone suggested Splash, also try Max as it's very cheap as well.

Just as another option if you don't want to worry about luggage and the possibilityof it getting ruined...you can buy relatively cheap ones from Argos. I bought one for around 30-35 pounds. They pass all the safety tests, etc, just are pretty basic and aren't any fancy brand. Then you can just donate it to charity or something, I'm sure its significantly cheaper than hiring one from a rental company, plus it's clean and new!!
