One thing that has helped me immensely in disciplining my child is taking my DH's advice and staying completely calm and patient when she is misbehaving.. My DD had started shouting quite a bit on me and at times raising her hands to hit me in frustration... My DH, bless him for being intuitive and smart enough (or maybe an advantage of being bystander) told me that she is just 3.4 yrs and does not understand my threats or short tempered attempts at discipline.. so i got my act together and am at the moment trying to keep my self completely calm no matter how irritated i become with her... and its helping a lot... i did not even realize that it was my behaviour that she was copying or reacting to.. So no matter what the reason for your niece's short temper the best way to deal with the tantrums is to stay calm, with positive reinforcement and no-threat policy.. and yes the new-born does not need any emotional attention right now so concentrate on the daughter... Jumping in and totally out of the subject ( my apologies to the OP ) but my DD is doing the same thing too , i.e. hitting etc. Can you advise what do you do in reaction to this? I've tried talking, time out and others but it's not working. Is it a phase thing, do you know? (crossing fingers that it is) S

The best way to deal with rude people is to ignore them and walk away. But then they never learn! hhmm.. don't think it's your call to teach them? When they turn violent, just whisk out your mobile phone, record it and send it to the coppers.. I think. ...

I used to be like you, worried about how my DD eats in school. Then I've come to realise that the teachers and TAs cannot have a one on one lunch session. Hence, that's why I only put sandwiches in her lunch box and some crackers. Yes, it may not be healthy but I do know that I can spend personal time with her for dinner. Regarding the CCTV, it is a weird thing that a parent is not allowed to watch it as and when. And with the teacher's attitude, please have a word with the principal ASAP? What does her colleague mean she'll snap if she's tired? That specific teacher needs to get her attitude in check esp she's in a nursery! I can't imagine how she's like with the little ones then. I'm not implying anything just that if she snaps at parents if she's tired, I certainly do not one a teacher to snap at my DD just because the teacher is tired. Don't worry about the school lunch thing. To me, it's meant to be like a snack thing and so she have have proper lunch when she's home .. that's just my humble opinion x

I think what the OP means that she's simply not being in the loop of things. Maybe that's what you need to tell your DH. It's not about asking permission. It's simply to keep you updated of things. If you feel strongly about it, please tell him. :D

Don't think you need to hire anyone as RAKFTZ has an office in DFC. If you bring in complete paperwork and all is approved, it's not that difficult. Medical is also done here in dubai. x

I gave birth here. I was with Dr Andrea Farhat and at that time, she was working at IMH (international modern hospital). She now owns her own clinic and am not sure where she will be for birth. Call her and check. My birth was easy and simple. She was witty and great bedside manner. She doesn't give unnecessary medications if not required but she's also straight to the point. I like her. I'd go to her if/when I'm having my 2nd baby. OP, only thing you have to remember is if you have no extra hands at home, you do have a toddler to still feel special. And personally, to me, the current method of obtaining the british passport is far more expensive then ever, as the British embassy is not attesting anything. Also, do get a doula. Helps with everything x

When we had visitors ( ie family ), we'd pay for some small stuff. We'd transport them to places when we are available and if we go out for a nice dinner, I've grown thick skinned and ask for money before getting any food ( works esp if you do the package deals in hotels ) :D

My heart goes out to you too. As someone who is not in the medical industry, I would expect the professionals to tell me that I have that (IUGR) and not being pushed around. And being told in a nice comforting tone especially since I've just given birth. OP, I would complain to the medical board or any governing body here for the stress the medical team has given me. Take care and kiss the lil precious one for me x

I don't understand why won't she have the baby after all the trouble she went through? And all the money!!! GOSH!! So where's the baby now? The baby is with an unrelated family in Egypt. It seems that the father is paying them to raise her. how is the baby able to get a birth certificate let alone a passport? and what happened to the maid? that report is so badly written.. or maybe not allowed to write about it eh? The maid went back to the Philippines. The baby got a birth certificate because the father took a DNA test to prove his paternity.. Which doesn't make sense when a) legally married parents who got married when mom is 4 months pregnant is given a big deal when they need to apply for a birth cert b) maids who give birth here are taken to jail

I think it is the same as the UK curriculum schools. My DD, also a sept baby, is in FS1 in her nursery but I just know that when she's off to a big school, they'll keep her back in FS1 too while her best friend will be moved to FS2 as her birthday is in March. I look it as she'll be the smartest in her class :)

Ok change doctor or go back and explain your concerns and in the mean time try old fashioned steaming several times a day, this is one of the best remedies for coughs and still advised by doctors now. Obviously please be very very careful with a two year old when steaming. Your doctor may well suggest some more tests and advise an inhaler or nebuliser for a while to help your DD or further treatment based on diagnosis. Don't smother her in Vix or add anything to the steaming or you could do more damage than good. hhmm.. so far it's not done any damage to DD *touchwood*. I take it as it's much cleaner that the rough water you get from the pipes in this country ;) If you read the contraindications you will see that you have to be careful with certain ages and if your child has certain chest conditions it is not advised as an actually worsen the illness. I use vix, have done for 40+ years but i don't smother it on and am more than aware how unpleasant it can be for a young child to have smothered on. At this point in time until a diagnosis is made steaming with nothing several times a day is the most beneficial and safest thing to do. Hopefully the OP has now taken her child to see a doctor. Rough water? has nothing to do with anything. [i'>"Infants and young children have airways that are much narrower than those of adults, so any increase in mucus or inflammation can narrow them more severely."[/i'> http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/avoid-applying-vicks-vaporub-to-babies-pediatricians-say-1.845457 edited by Lolacat on 28/09/2013 hhmm.. is that vicks for adults or baby vicks? Flames - not sure about Ajman as where you can go swimming but there is an excellent Finnish / English instructor at the Sharjah Wanderers Club called Lisa I believe. Ex swimming coach at a school. However, you need to be a member of the club. That's not true. She's teaching my DD. I'm not a member there. Not sure if she teaches over the weekend.. That is very surprising as I know the Committee have just introduced fees for the rugby/football club for non members who wish to play each time. I assume you pay the DHs 20 to enter the club as a 'guest' at least? hhmm.. never been asked before. We stopped over the summer holidays. Will start again tom. If I have to pay additional 20dhs on top of what Lisa charges, then I'll have to look somewhere else :( Does those non members have to pay to play with the rugby/football team? edited by shjbelle on 28/09/2013 Yes, they do now apparently. So you bypassed security at the front gate and allowed you in? Very unusual. Every time I go and bring a guest, I have to pay the 20Dhs for them just to have dinner - not use the facilities. As a member for the last 3 years of the club and knowing the Committee very well, most surprised. I thought Lisa taught the youngsters on a Monday as she used to teach my DD also but she stopped wanting to go quite sometime ago. I don't know what the protocol is. I just go in. Maybe Lisa pays for the number of kids she teaches. I don't know. Hope I'm not getting Lisa into trouble here... What I do get is not being able to park inside, which I truly understand..

I don't know what to think any more... my 2 y.o. started coughing at night since we came back from vacation a month ago. Since 3 weeks we haven't been sleeping through a single night. She has sudden cough attacks so dry and strong, that she has to throw up sometimes. We were by the doctor, he said it's allergic and prescribed Aerius and Nasonex for the nose. This was 3 weeks ago and these don't seem to make this cough better. I tried other things: cough syrup, high pillow, humidifier, menthol oitment, saline spray, no A/C...nothing works! I just wonder whether someone of you had the same problem as allergies seem to be quite common in Dubai? I put away soft toys, old matrass and other things which collect dust from her room. Where else could I look for the allergen? Milk maybe? I only give her formula for toddlers in the evenings, no normal cow milk. Of course we'll see a doc again, I'm just afraid he won't be able to help... Dairy tickles the throat. Cut down on the number of scoops. Use baby vicks on her chest and back. What I also used to do is keep a bucket of hot water mixed with a big dollop of adult vicks next to her bed..

Our nearly 3 year old DD is a handful; she's fun, feisty and strong willed but she's also a very sensitive child. DH can barely stand to spend any time with her these days - the smallest little niggles seem to turn into huge mountains as he gets so angry if she won't sit still, or read her book nicely, or get dressed immediately etc. The point of this post is not to knock my DH but try to find some kind of solution or way to help him learn to deal with her and actually listen to her before simply assuming that everything stems from naughtiness (which is doesn't.). He refuses to read any kind of books about behavioural issues and categorically refuses to discuss it with me. Can anyone recommend a course, DVD or similar? FYI 'Super Granny' came to see us approx 12 months ago and I think that actually made things worse as now the default response to anything is the threat of time out or straight to time out without even trying to understand what is wrong and what the root cause of the 'naughtiness' is. He constantly threatens her with time out and tells her she is naughty... Edited to add: 'I don't think that any kind of public forum/course would be a good idea as DH is even stricter and less tolerant in public. edited by UmmShamsa on 21/09/2013 ermm... she's 3. they do call it the terrifying 3 age. DD is like that too. Sudden bursts of tantrums and what nots. please do tell your DH it's normal, it's a phase. What I do with my dd is acknowledge her tantrums and get her to explain why is she angry/upset. Call me a bad mom, but sometimes I ignore her tantrums . lol :D (which is not often) it'll pass. well.. at least i hope so. :D S

My DS is turning 4 very shortly and I haven't yet planned any party for him. He didn't have one last year and I know he'd love one this year....He just started FS1 at a new nursery so I don't think has made 'friends' yet. I'd really appreciate knowing from any of you who invited the whole class to a birthday party - what proportion RSVPed and turned up? I'd prefer to do something relaxed/simple at home - is that just crazy? Can you rely on parents/carers watching their children or would I have to hire in additional help? I haven't organised a kid's party before so have absolutely no idea what I can expect - any advice/experiences much appreciated! Thank you. It depends if you live in a compound and know any other kids in the neighbourhood (around those age). I don't, so I simply bought a cake, prepared the doggy bags and celebrated DD's birthday in school. :D

I can't bear the thought that my baby will not bother crying because he knows I won't come. I'm not ready for him to give up on me just yet ;) This is not what CIO is about. It's about teaching baby to soothe themselves back to sleep when they awake during the night and to realize that night times are for sleeping and for doing so in their own crib/bed. I did CIO with checks from both my kids and I assure you that neither of them have given up on me. In fact, quite the opposite. They both sleep very well and I'm the first one they look to and come to if and when they need comfort or their needs addressed. true true. CIO does not mean leave the baby to cry alone. Does it stand for "Crying it Out"? Or what? yes it does. i did CIO with DD. but i was physically in the room reassuring DD that i'm going to be here keeping her company til she falls back asleep. I kept talking to her calmly and stroked her. like the other poster said... not cold turkey, in her own room alone. of course she'll be terrified. x

Hi ladies, My renewal is due next month & and I am looking to move out as my current apartment is too big for one person. Rents everywhere are going high. Many people have told me they are living in other cities and travel daily to DXB. I wanted to check with some people who are actually doing it? doesnt it get tiring? although am not very much afraid of traffic because my timing would be entirely different than office goers ( morning 10-11 and evening 9-10 going back). Any suggestions? I checked on dubizzle and found these beautiful apartments in al hamra village at cost of peanuts. Anyone living there and working in dubai? is it good idea or I should stick to DXB areas only? traffic on the old emirates road is smoother from 9ish-10 and again after 9pm. you'll be ok. but like other posters say, everyday can take a toll on you. since you're single, why don't you look at JVC?

Thanks! you will be going against normal traffic so it's not so bad. if you know how to get onto the old emirates road from jlt, it'll prolly take 45 mins. it's the JLT traffic that's gonna be a ****** for you.
