Honestly can't believe the question, I assume you don't have an underaged maid? You can say that if we are living in another country... Over here if a woman become pregnant out of wedlock then jail and deportation, in maids cases the first man will be taken into custody will be the boss/ the sponsor until proven innocent from having illegal affair with the maid. So OP have every right to feel anxious about this. OP, ask your maid flatly why she is using them, you might ask her for the doctor prescription itself for any reason that it's not to prevent pregnancy.... If she failed to present it, then you must assume getting her out of your house and on the next plane to her home. A very well known lawyer I know they discovered thier maid is pregnant and she isn't married, what do you think they did? On the next plane they sent her to her home, a week later they sent her belongings and all her dues.... As he is a lawyer he knew the first man will be brought for questioning is him, despite he is constantly in AD.... Another case of someone in DH ex work spent 2 months in the jail despite he was at work when the maid pregnancy assumed happened, and the sign in and out of his work is biometric with the whole hand print. Never mention the salary had been suspended, so loss of income with children go to school and the maid was in the sponsor home during that time!!! So go ahead and make fun of a serious question that if proven the maid in question is sleeping around then the family will face great deal of hardship The pill prevents from pregnancy....so shouldn't it be good that she's using them? I'm not making fun, I think it's good she's taking them and they might actually be for other medical reasons as well. We can't expect grown women to live in celibate whilst employed on year long contracts either. Re-read your own post, it indicates that you assume the maid is underage that's why making fun of a serious situation that will eat the grean and dry in OP household if the usage of these pills is for pregnancy. Please remember where exactly you are living, so personal rights as sleeping around is punishable by law over here. No, I wrote that I assume that she DOESN'T have an underaged maid and therefore is quite normal that women have relationships (seems like it came across another way ?).

Archery or pigeon shooting at the Jebel Ali Club. BBQ in the desert (don't leave any rubbish behind ?). Visit Ripe market in Zabeel Park (think it's some market in Al Barsha Park as well). Hire some bikes in the Marina. Go to the beach. Visit the Creek area, abra, shawarma and Dubai Museum.

Some unprofessional places will make you feel cheap using the Entertainer voucher (I just don't bother going back after it's finished), I stopped buying Groupon etc as I had awful experience with those vouchers, unless is a place I'm familiar with.

If it's 6,000 dhs a month on groceries and stuff like diapers and whatever you buy in the grocery shop, I think it's a bit high, that's 200 dhs a day - the Friday lunch.

I guess you can manage if the house is paid for. Once your child starts school, I think it too tough. You can't say if it's low or not as it doesn't state what job your husband does.

How much is a midprice brunch? A few friends booked Toro Toro for a celebration and I found out it's 500 dhs with alcohol ?. I'm not good value on brunches, I do like a drink, but would have max 3 glasses of something alcoholic during a brunch, so I find it quite expensive while my friends been there before and says it's "not that expensive" for a Dubai brunch. Mid price is usually AED250 I avoid the AED500 ones like the plague as the equivalent of over GBP100 for 4 hours is outrageous. Perhaps the people that don't mind paying have huge amounts of disposable income. Toro Toro is nice but not worth AED500 Thanks, I felt so stingy thinking it's expensive, as I don't do brunches often and it's a special occasion I will go this time anyway.

When I came to Dubai 12 years ago, wives weren't generally working, as anything that could be employed with someone from a third world country on a minimum salary would be, you would never be served by a white face for example. If you are building your self worth in having a job here, it can be depressing. Apply for jobs as a nanny whatever if you are desperate and need the money.

DAA offers both the American diploma AND the IB diploma. There is no comparison!! I have first hand experience with both schools. DAA is a far superior school and the performance of the students is better. If you like to grab a coffee from the lobby and want to feel fancy and pay more money while doing it...then go to GWA. If you want your child to get a better education then go to DAA! Aren't they quite similar in school fees? DAA has pretty high fees as well.

Sisters is good, uses lycon wax, no strips. Threading is good at any nail salon really, like NBar or even Sisters. Thanks Silvstet. How are the prices like? Are they pretty decent or a rip off? Have a look on the website, they aren't the cheapest, but sometimes I think you get what you pay for with waxing.

I tip 50 dhs a month + Christmas and Summer bonus. 45 dhs an hour is a bit high, saying that, I pay 35 dhs an hour and my maid is overworked, scheduled 9 h a day, 6 days a week. If the company that charges 45 dhs per hour is more ethical I would rather use them.

As Dubai isn't a hardship destination anymore and companies can easily recruit staff they don't feel the need to offer schooling (your family is obviously quite expensive to employ on an expat package, compared to a family with1 or 2 children and companies are if course businesses). There are some expat packages out there, but companies will do the math as well. You are right that 50 k a month wouldn't be enough for housing and schooling for a family of 6.

Sounds like you need a relocation agent. Realestate agents don't get paid to show you around, so it's often very time consuming and difficult for them to find properties in different areas and often they don't have contacts with schools.

I think I would do one of the big brunches, mainly because I haven't been to many while here, the Al Qasr or Traituer sounds lovely. Walk at kite beach by sunset. Meal to see the dancing fountains. A desert activity. Dinner in a beach restaurant with a big stash of tissues.

I did it with Ted Morgan, big regret, always been happy going there when I had long hair, but wasn't happy with the short cut. I used to have nice short cuts with Toni & Guy in Europe, but don't think they are the same over here.

Motion Ladies Fitness behind the Burj Al Arab wouldn't be that far from the Marina....they are great. You can buy a monthly pass for around 1200 AED (their prices may have gone up slightly in September) and attend all the group classes you want or you can buy packs of 5/10 etc. They have personal training, pilates, yoga, barre, TRX and are starting crossfit in October....rarely more than 8 ladies in each class so a lot of personal attention. They do have a social environment as well...a lounge for coffees before/after classes and they do brunches when the weather cools down. That is 14,000AED a year! :) Cheaper than liposuction.

To be honest they will not bother sourcing someone from the UK, as their are plenty available in the UAE already unless you are really lucky or have something really unique for a company.

They are nice developed communities with older houses and not always well maintained.... Jumeirah Park and Juneirah Village Triangle are adjacent to Springs/Meadows and the houses are newer and mostly nicer, albeit the landscaping in those communities aren't as good, but they have schools and community centers as well, I would look at them as well.

We're leaving Dubai unexpectedly and I have unopened and sealed store-cupboard items - coffee, sugar, sauces, ketchup, fabric conditioner and the like. We're not allowed to put food in our shipping container - does anyone know if I can carry them on the plane in my suitcase. All my clothes etc are being shipped separately so my suitcase has plenty of room. I'm assuming yes because family often bring me food items from abroad but I'm wondering if anyone's taken back half of Spinney's in their luggage. Oh gosh, don't know your situation, but ketchup and sugar in the luggage...maybe just donate it to a maid or laborer...

Hi! We are moving to Dubai soon and I'm trying to research schools but it's very confusing! My kids are 6 & 8. I'm hoping some of you could give me advice on schools that are within a reasonable driving distance from The Springs. Don't want to be stuck in traffic all day. Anyone know if GEMS founders & Oak tree primary are very far from there? Any advice on choosing schools would be most welcome. I'm a total novice at this . Thanks! The Oak tree school is far from the Springs, you will soon get fed up with that school run and the roads here in Dubsi has heavy traffic, lots of erratic driving and generally unsafe, try to find a school close to where you live is my biggest advice. DBSin the Springs is a very good school kind of within budget, but can be difficult to get a space. Regent in the Greens is also British curriculum and also one of the lower priced schools. I think most of the new schools has fees of +50k a year.

I notice from another thread that you are a family. If you have school aged children they will need ID cards for the school contract, I can't remember if you need to have one also. Yes not having an Emirates ID will make things complicated with registration in nursery/schools etc and you husband will always have to do things that requires Emirates ID.

To follow on with another thread, what is going on with all of the closed restaurants?! On Friday we went to: Baker and Spice Dubai Mall; Closed MORE next to Dubai Mall; Closed More in Gold and Diamond Park; Closed Balance Cafe in Oasis; Closed; Finally had success with Organic Food Cafe. I was disappointed that Balance Cafe had closed, it really is a lack of healthy restaurants here. If you like More, there is one in Mall of the Emirates, in the same part as the cinema has opened in.

Thanks for your replies, Mirdif looks good as I currently live under a flight path. I'd miss it!! We can't get over the cost of after school activities and rugby clubs. 4 even 5 times the price of home. Yes the activities really adds up. Mist schools have free of charge after school clubs, so we always pick some of them and if your child manage to get in the school team, those teaining sessions will also be free.

A nanny/maid is required for a family of 4 in JVC, we have 2 kids 4 and 6 who both go to school, I will provide own room with bathroom and wifi access, rest hours, 1 day off "morning to evening, no sleepovers", 1700 dhs mo thly salary. Toiletries and free food, a ticket home every 2 years, in return she will be expected to do house chores "cleaning, laundry, ironing, cooking, etc..." And help with the kids, she must be honest and extremely kind to kids and a fun loving person. I think the law is a ticket home every year. It actually isn't.. Ok, do you know if it's compulsory with medical Injurance?

Just bring the things you really like from home, you can get almost anything here but might not be to your exact taste. What I miss (not Australian) is some interior designed pieces from where I live. I feel there are a lot of low quality cheap furnitures and difficult to find stylish good quality that isn't a designer brand that cost a complete fortune. Good quality electronics there are lots and prisewise I think they are ok too.

Thanks so much for the replies. Hi AAL, do you mean he will need 50k a month with or without a family package? Hi Lady Lavender, yes we realise we would need 4 X 60K plus 200k+ for a house. Why would Mirdif be less expensive, you're not the first person to mention that it may be more affordable. Hi Silvstet, would you mind giving me some examples of cost of after school activities? Our boys are currently in rugby schools and are obsessed with it. They play basketball and gaelic football too. Our 8 yr old goes to drama classes (LAMDA) and tennis lessons. Our 3 yr old will need his too in time esp swimming lessons. I saw online that JESS won the schools rugby league but I can't find a mention of it on their website? Would any of you have boys who play? My 8 yr old has a half hour session of resource per day at school for mild dyspraxia, reading and maths. She's very bubbly and socially bright but is behind her peers. Has anyone experience of this type of thing? When reading through some of the websites of potential schools they sound rather exclusive though my friend feels The Ranches Primary School isn't. Are there any Irish expat moms on this forum? Or teachers who would know of children who have switched from the Irish Curriculum to the British equivalent? Thanks peeps, great advice so far! Sport lessons are generally 75 - 100 dhs a lessons, drama worked out a bit over 100 dhs per lesson. One of my children did it Ductac Mall of the Emirates with a company called Dramascen and they also had the exams at the end of the year.

Every family is different, but check school fee costs in a possible school, rent on propertfinder and then from there you can work out spending money what you usually spend where you live should be ok here as well as some things are cheaper and somethings are a bit more, but I think in average it work out similar to Europe, just bear in mind after school activities here are expensive apart from the one that are free within the school or if they are in a school team.

I'd just go with a normal taxi. The lady drivers are bonkers. Hi hi, the only times I got the pink ones usually from the airport the driving has been a bit erratic and last time the lady driver had her handbag at the passenger seat floor, so had to sit careful not to kick it, I was too tired to say anything.

Just order RTA, tell them you are going to Abu Dhabi airport and they might send you a big car. Cost is a bit over 200 dhs. On the way back is easy to get a taxi back to Dubai or use the Ethiad bus.
