It's the same in all communities, the owners must be aware... They don't even hide where I live.

You could also bring a dish of something you have cooked if it's in someone's house. Easiest would be to ask your boyfriend what a good gesture would be.

I always think it is great when people take lead in their life, so for that I will commend you. Having said that, I must highlight the reality of the market you are coming into... You can see in the paper at this time that many people feel they are being discriminated against by employers but the fact is that they are.not being hired because the competition is incredibly fierce at this time. The job you say you would even do, reception, is a highly sought after job. There is another thread by a poster who already lives here with her husband who cannot get this job despite holding an MBA. there are now many housewives, qualified women, who are looking for work to supplement their husbands income nut otherwise they have everyone paid for so can be hard competition for you. And EA jobs have disappeared in many companies as the staff are reduced. You could alternatively arrive and be lucky and get the job. But I cannot say that I think that will happen as you do not have UAE experience, and that means a lot in this marker. Look for companies from your country that have offices over here and your language and communication skills in your mother tongue would be an advantage. I do not think that is enough money for one month here let alone three. Dubai is an expensive city. It simply is. All of the media about the lifestyle here is not showing people on low wages partying, it is people on better wages living it up. Have you considered other Émirates? Sharpen you Cv before coming, make sure your work clothes and shoes are immaculate and professional, have references prepared to speak for you, perfect your interview skills, research the country more, have your LinkedIn pages perfected, and find out where you will stay before stepping on a plane. The cheapest place I ever saw was 125AED a night and it was basic plus. If you want a new experience, have a look at Burma. The wages are low but coat of living is too. And there is a lifestyle there That they are trying to develop. Good luck! Burma recently increased the minimum wage to $2.80 a day after having almost slave like condition, how on earth do you expect someone to earn a decent wage there unless they have something completely lacking in their country?

Al Hadeerah at Bab al Shams looks amazing, not sure if you are willing to travel there. If it's a big budget, I am sure Burj Al Arab will make a nice one, otherwise Zabeel Saray probably put on a good one too.

That's a long school journey for a young child. It will be tiresome for him and Sheikh Zayed Road isn't exactly safe. Why not move to Downtown?

Take care with landlords in Jumeirah/Umm Suqeim areas. They vary a lot. Ours is rubbish and doesn't like to spend a dirham if he can get away with it! The agents tend to know which are the compounds with good maintenance, so just make sure to ask the question. I agree, very difficult to find someone providing good maintenance, as it's not individual owners they don't seem to care to much

The Marina/JBR is really nice, but far from the airport and biggest problem is the traffic going into the Marina at certain hours, not fun to sit in traffic jam after already quite a journey. Downtown is closer and similar lifestyle apart from the beach, but you wouldn't be far from the beach, about 20 min in car or taxi.

why are people commenting when they are saying "i don't know the full story".. ? One of the men on trial made heroic efforts to try to save the boy while others looked on, largely because of the Good Samaritan law here... There was a lot of discussion about this case on a facebook group and if I remember correctly it was pointed out that the mother has closed her blog and no longer posts online. There are very few people if anyone that knows the full story and yet you comment and telling not to comment if not knowing the full story.

You will not find them together as a deal in the same package. Commercial and residential real estate is separate in Dubai, although you will be able to find office nearby or even in the same building as the apartment. Look at Tecom, JLT, Dubai Investment Park and the Business Bay area

Hi all - and apologies for dragging up a semi-old thread! Regarding these stores, particularly the Home Centre, is it acceptable to haggle a bit in them? I wouldn't expect it to be to the same extent as in the souqs, but would it be reasonable to at least push a bit for a discount, particularly if buying a few big items? No you can't haggle in Homecentre.

Being curious, why so intrested in locals and camels? There is nothing going on in Fujairah really, there are a lot more conservative locals living there, but if you are familiar with Al Ain, I think you have experience with similar backgrounds.

Age can be an issue here in regards to some roles as I have found out to my cost. On a couple of occasions I was offered positions, but once the actual person I would have been working for saw my CV and my age, they stated that they wanted someone younger, even though HR told me that the younger person, did not have the required qualifications. I think a lot can come down to what certain people expect to see when they hear you're over 50. I am now fully employed at 57 in a role which is more like the roles I carried out over 20 years ago and not what I trained for, but hey, it's a job and the pay's ok. Dear Geordie expat, Yes, you're right, sadly age does play a determining factor, however, even simple administration roles require younger people so that employers can pay them an even cheaper salary. At your age I would be concerned if I thought it was a discriminating factor. At mine I can understand it. Apparently anyone approaching 40 is also considered just as "past" it as someone who is also your age. Someone replied to my post somewhere else and said that the brain slows down at 40 and jobs should be given to younger people instead, so maybe I should just crawl into a hole and disappear! Or see it for what it is, the companies think you are too expensive to work for them, Western educated woman approaching 40, will expect a higher salary, than a young Asian (that's the mindset for a lot of companies).

Generally vegetables are safe, I tend to buy from countries that I know has regulations in place, ,I'm avoiding vegetables from Jordan for example, only because I overhead someone in a supermarket once saying they are using too many pesticles there. They sell a lot of organic local vegetables that are great.

I understand your frustration, next time spend more time speaking to the person that will actually work with you, it's always good to check references, but also make sure with the person that you hire that you agree with each other. You live and learn and it's always easy to look back what you could have done better, especially when you hire someone when you are stressed, maybe try to find a middle way with this maid until the end of the contract if possible.

Yes they are useless, I made a complaint not that recently to kcal about a delivery, no one has responded, sent message on Facebook and their official email. I complained about a delivery that took 90 minutes and the food looked and tasted disgusting once it arrived and because you can pay with credit card when you order they don't care as it's already paid for. Well they lost a customer for life, they never been amazing, but I ordered every now and then purley because they have the calorie amount on their food, which is handy while on a diet.

she said she would like to look for another job , however I do doubt that she has already found one ...what would otherwise motivate her so much ? also , is it normal practise to take the nannies along with you when on a long holiday ? we were planning to take her along to our home country for the summers .... that was one of the things she had resisted to ... infact she resists coming out with us anytime even if we need the help with the kids and we accommodated that as well .... do they basically get that choice ? As you are asking, -Do they get that choice? I think you weren't clear from the beginning what you expected from this maid. I think you should let this one go, find a new one and be very clear exactly what you expect from them and from there agree salary etc.

To be fair, they are no different to us, they can be unhappy at work, just as us. I worked as an aupair when I was young and hated living with the family I worked for and didn't stay for the full year that I was meant to be there. It wasn't personally that I didn't like the family, but I didn't feel like I properly had my own space. There are so many reasons why it might not work.

Did you not check when booking, if you will get a refund in case of cancellation, natural disaster or not? Sorry for being blunt, but I never book holidays that I'm not sure that I can't cancel and get refund for, there are quite a few companies that don't offer refund, I know someone that found out the hard way and after that I am extra cautious, some will charge a higher fee to be able to cancel. Hope it gets sorted out, one way or the other.

That explains why you never respond back, and you are only an editor in 7 days or expat woman writing a letter just to spark comments.... How sad things isn't that much real! High quality journalism  Or someone so "stressed" about her job situation, that has the time to write and moan about it everywhere.

If your son/daughter is bright he/she will do great and flourish at DESC. If he/she has "special" needs best keep him/her at WSO. I am not sure, if you mean proper special needs or struggling in school, as I had a friend with a child with real special needs, sending their child to DESC and they couldn't really had been happier.

Good advice from SugarMama, 2 different curriculums, you would firstly have to decide which curriculum you would like to go with and then choose schools. DIA has a good reputation in general, maybe not the most academic (from what I heard and I might be wrong!). Regent, I know a few parents that weren't happy and moved their children and also some that think it's good. Visit a few school when you are here and decide from there, I visited some outstanding schools, but felt they weren't for us.

If they seem intrested, until you tell your age, it might have to do with what they think your salary expectations are. In this country it's a lot of cheap labour. I would put my date of birth in the CV and if possible salary range you are looking for in the CV.

I would avoid making too much of a deal of meal times, don't do funny shapes etc. Kids will eat when they are eventually hungry, maybe pure some vegetables in the foods they like and they don't notice. If you think the child doesn't get enough nutrition and is underweight take it to a pediatrician for advice, a lot of the times parents panic unnecessary. I never gave my children fish fingers, chicken nuggets, funny shape food, as I use to think about children in third world countries, if they are hungry they eat a bowl of rice or whatever, sometimes I think we are the ones making our children fussy.

Anantara is after Atlantis and Wardorf ...now it's better...but always lots of traffic because of trucks and buses coming and going all over the construction sites.... they are building in each and every available corner...even under the bridges...but roads are not enough and I can not imagine people living there how they will move when the new shopping mall and hotels and towers and ....will be ready. Thanks for the update, I am giving Anantara a miss, I am not sure if it's after Waldorf or just before, same crescent and direction anyway, too be fair it's few permanent residents living that way, as it's mostly hotels, although at least Anantara also has some long term residents.

thanks Silvstet. For the 2 children that you know that died during sports lessons, can you elaborate on that? something we as parents can learn from it, should pay attention to? I don't really want to write any details, as both had Dubai parents and their might be people on this forum that recognise them. All I can say 1 was during supervised sport and it was a freak accident that could not have been prevented, apart from not doing the exercise and the other one was sport related on holiday, also supervised. The only thing I learned from this is all activities involves risks and find the best instructors you can get, I'm sometimes over protective, which I don't feel good about either.

I know the mother has not been on social media for 6 months because she needs time to grief. But leaving her a message on one of her links will still be good. It is just horrible, and it keeps crossing my mind. The painful thing is, it does not come into the news here (very tiny small article in Gulfnews), and the organization is still operational as to what I read. I read somewhere that the court for this case was held yesterday. For those who want to read more, this is the only thing I could find online: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/7102427/Brits-in-DFubai-blood-money-threat.html Terrible, so heartbreaking, so painful. Absolutely heart breaking, but we also don't know exactly what happened. I unfortunately know 2 children that has died in freak accidents related to sport, during supervision. We don't know if it was neglect or if it was something that couldn't be prevented. I feel for those guys that worked there as well, the way they are exposed in the newspaper and to be asked for £ 20,000 each as blood money. I would think more blame should be on the company than the staff. Obviously don't know the full story. My children are soon at that age that they could do similar summer jobs, I would be really reluctant to let them if they can be personally responsible for what might be an accident. I am shocked by this reply. How could drowning not be their fault. Is it the 5 year old boy who is to blame himself? If you are not making people accountable for what they are responsible for, how cruel is this world. And yes the company is the most responsible, I agree, but the staff present there as well. And you should indeed be reluctant, young unexperienced staff should not be supervising and organizing sports events for vulnerable little children. These guys were in their 20th and 30th and seemed to be experienced sport coaches, I don't know enough about the story, but accidents can happen even during the best supervision, I will leave it at this as I find this incident absolutely horrific and don't want to ruin this thread, as I mentioned it's also a worry as a resident in UAE, that you could be charged blood money etc. May Ben rest in peace and I'll not write anything more here, as its truly destroying anyone with children knowing something like this can happen to anyone of us, also as I mentioned I know two other children that has died in very tragic circumstances and they were both during sport lessons :-(

The solution isn't to get a loan if your financial situation is bad, you have to cut wherever you can on your spendings, there must be something you can save on even if it's small things like buying cheaper food and cleaning products.

I am not sure it's a law to provide medical injurance just yet, but will take place this year, so I don't think it's illegal. Is she sick? Why did she feel the need to tell you? There are government hospitals here that cost next to nothing if she needs treatment. There are different levels of maid agencies out there, I would try to find one of the more ethical. Some for example let the staff work on public holidays and some give it off.

11,400 dhs for a month, it's so much, couldn't the people living with her pay a share each, I understand that they lost their belongings, but they would still be going to work and get paid a salary they can't expect a single lady to pay everything for them. If someone wants to contribute to the bill, I guess you can see who the account belongs to and the outstanding balance. Can you pay that at Dewa or is it online?

Dear Ladies We are going to move to Dubai in August. Our kids will join the GEMS World Academy School in Al Barsha. Now we are trying to figure out in which area we could live. The area must be green as we have a dog and not too far from School. Are the Meadows, Emirates hills and jumeirah lakes too far from the School? How long will it takes me to get to School in the morning? Any help is very much appreciated! Those areas aren't too far from Gems, maybe 20 minutes by car, if you live in the areas that are closer it will be even less. The Lakes would be ok too. Al Barsha obviously as well, but think it lacks community feel and greenery, don't really know the area that well. Arabian Ranches and Victory Heights aren't that far either.

Mango Tree is closing as well, although I wasn't really a fan, it also had great fountain view. Do you think they aren't getting much business as I have found recently most of the expensive restaurants are really quiet I think they offered something new and funky a few years ago, but wasn't really keeping up with the trends and I found the drink prices at Rivington way too high. Mango Tree was a bit hit and miss and with Thipthara at the Palace Hotel offering that little bit more for Thai dining with view. Yes, I think main reason for closing is that they were too expensive for what they offered. The Armani Hotel has great restaurants and aren't really that much more. And there are lots of reasonable restaurants in Dubai Mall with fountain view. I found the Rivington staff quite arrogant as well... I wonder if the Meat Co in Souk Al Bahar is next to go. The view isn't really there and it's overpriced, at least the Madinat location has a better view and the restaurant itself also feels nicer.
