To Europe, it's 10 dhs for a normal sized card in an envelope, might be more if you are sending it further away.

My husband isn't a pilot and he got maximum 6 days off a month, his contract states that he should work minimum 60 h a week, it's Dubai it's harder out here. I am not crying and complaining, we knew what we signed up for.

It's more about budget than which one is better, as they are in different price range. Meadows got larger villas, nothing below 200 k, Springs are townhouses and lakes are a mixture. Get your car and drive around and you will see which one is suitable for you.

Of course there are drugs, alcohol etc, but it's a long way away.....and it happens all over the world, I do think it's more protected here, but teenagers can get punished if caught.

I think children are aloud to be children for longer in Dubai, I am quite shocked how some children are dressed and what they speak about in Europe and it's normal for them to read about s*x positions and stuff in regular newspapers. We are happy here, but we have missed a bond with cousins etc with living away from home.

Jealous definitely not. I can think of many better things to spend my money on than a place on The Palm! LOL !! well, Silvstet's the one who has made two posts mentioning budget..... As like in most other post you have, jumping on something someone says without actually having anything to contribute. And I don't mean that people are jealous of others living on the Palm. What I meant some got extremely strong feelings when living there get brought up, like it smells and couldn't pay me to live there, come on its hardly Afghanistan, slum or an area of Dubai that's unsafe or something.

Thanks! In what way would you say that Safa have got a softer approach than say, Victory Heights? They both seem like small and friendly schools... VH do seem to have places for next year which is good. My boy is due to start fs1 in September next year and I don't think he will be ready. I would rather wait but everyone tells me he will miss out on a good placement if I do. Do you think this is true? Thanks again! I have no experience about the other schools, so can't compare. You will have to visit and geta feel yourself. Schools are so personal as well. You will know when you bring your child and visit if it's the right one for your family. I have been to schools with good ratings and highly recommended, but didn't feel right for us.

Definitely no traffic problems on the Palm during the week. Yes world record fireworks, big events on Atlantis will cause some issues, but it's not everyday occurances. Just choose your tower or villa wisely, a friend lives in the Fairmont residents and they started to build a hotel next door, which apparently is noisy, but have another friend in the Marina residents and she doesn't have any problems. Smelly? I really don't know where that comment comes from. All I know is that "the Palm "hits a nerve with some, to brash and show offish for some and mainly the ones that don't have the budget for it. The ones I know that lives there love it.

I met someone that homeschool recently and she's a single mum homeschooling and surprisingly it does work, but there is no way on earth she would do it if she could afford a normal school. She said her child is definitely missing the social part of school.

The traffic on and off the Palm is fine, some people that you couldn't pay to live there, probably couldn't really afford it anyway, so wouldn't pay attention to those comments. The main problem with the Palm is the construction and with that come noise! JBR has some of the worst traffic problems in Dubai and I can't see it getting sorted out like ever! The Marina is lovely though and there is a tram that will take you to the beach. I would choose an apartment on the Marina Mall side. Mall of the Emirates only 15 min away when little traffic.

I totally agree. This is the one area of living here that I find absolutely remarkable. A year in advance for an absentee landlord, terrible service from agents and poor quality of housing...leaks, broken AC...and how funny that all the repair bills come in at 499AED. When we move next I'm not going to pay a year in advance as it simply means the landlord has no interest in fixing the many things that go wrong. With our company we've lived in a few places and I have never come across anything quite like this and I think it needs to change. Right now it's a buyers market and some landlords have not woken up to this. I see quite a few places that have been on the market for quite a long time. It doesn't matter how many or few checks you pay in, if the landlord doesn't fix maintenance and you refuse to pay the next check; you are the one that risk going to jail.

I don't know if the real estate agents are happy to drive you around different areas for you to make up your mind where you want to live. Try to narrow down your search and contact agents, once you have an idea. Why is the office commute not an factor when choosing location, are you working from home? Generally stone floor in villas, as it keeps your house cooler and saves on the electricity bill. Your budget could get you a nice villa in the Lakes, Meadows or Jumeirah Park, all close to the Marina if that's the desired location. Betterhomes, Espace, Engel and Volker and Ere homes are some of the better known names. I can't say which one is better, but generally avoid the smaller companies.

Going from JBR to an office at the Trade Centre on public transport will take an hour there and the same back. I would look into Downtown /Business bay area, it will cut the commute by half.

The Banyan tree in Ras al Khaimah, beautiful Spa and you could meet in one of the villas for chat and games. Not cheap per night, but still a lot more reasonable than a ticket to New York....

Regarding your age and high standards and good income, I would buy a villa, as landlords here aren't reliable and/or they buy for investment and might sell when you are still under contract, very messy indeed. Choose a location reasonable close to work. In Dubailand I would probably go for a nice villa in the Ranches as they have more facilities than Al Barari for example.

What happens if a Muslim expat wife residing in the UAE decides to separate/run away from her husband and take the kids with her? If the husband calls the cops, what's next? My friend is having issues and asked for my advice. I don't know much as I haven't lived here long enough. If she leaves to a hotel or whatever, until she figures out what to do next, what are the repercussions? Without knowing what the "issues" are, I would be loathe to offer any advice. There are often two sides (or more...) to every story and I think it is terrible to assume the man is at fault and that it's okay for the wife to even think of just upping and disappearing off with the kids until she decides what to do... If a woman came on here to say she was having "issues" with her husband and he had disappeared with the children, everyone would be up in arms telling her she must go to the police and how despicable he was. Even if she is your friend, you are only getting one side of the story, it's so kind of you to seek advice for her, but please be careful, if she follows advice you give her (even if only passing it on from here) and then she turns round as says "LaDiDa00 told me to...", you might find yourself in trouble too... I think the posters assumed that the wife is in danger; unfortunately happens way too often. And as mentioned the father often win these cases, so it's not really comparable to Europe etc where there are equal rights and no one should have to run away and hide, as the courts are mostly fair. I didn't want to reply to the OP, because of so little information and it's not easy to know what has happened, to take so drastic actions.

OP seems a complete control freak to me. We just rocked up here with 3 suitcases and learnt on the job. The only thing we had sorted was the kids school places. I'm really curious to know where in England she lives that you can't get pizza delivered to! But something tells me she may never have tried and probably makes her own from scratch. If she ever does make it to Dubai she'll be instantly recognisable- a 50 something English lady in an abaya driving her WV Golf to the Catholic Church and afterwards having a swimming in the sea before doing a bit of lecturing. This thread has been the best in ages, I'm really inspired to become more of a 'character' myself. Good luck to Tessa I say x ?, it sure sounds like an adventure, I want follow ups and I can see Nordic in her wellies at the airport with a welcome to Dubai banner!

Something makes me think Tessa is already in Dubai, like the Indians and Philipinas in the Catholic Church comment, even to bring that up I found odd after supposedly living in a third world countries. Surely one is not ready to move if not ready to mix with other nationalities in church if that was the case. This packages do exist, but even if you have a 500 k allowance, do you describe villas in that category as affordable? Only 6 business class flights a year, what would one expect; monthly? Pop over to Saudi Arabia comment...Sheikh road comment with a slang....for someone with that level of education... Silvstet, I agree with you :) There are just too many cliches in the posts. Admin can easily verify if Tessa21 is indeed a Dubai-based ghostwriter by checking her IP address. I have to say that the mentioning of nationalities going to church I found extremely ignorant and rude. Even the part where the boss is surprised that the wife wants to work and not just being eye candy. I do find most of my expat lady friends have a life apart from being 'the wife'. As you say, one "Dubai cliché " after the other.

Well, Tessa's children are adults now so packed lunches and school runs would not be part of her "real Dubai". Why is it so difficult to understand that different people have different lives? Some people never even have children. There are plenty of women here who can actually spend their days how they please. Envy is a not a pleasant side to be showing. No wonder this forum is so quiet nowadays. Tessa- your thoughts are not controversial. It's very wise to do as much research as possible before "taking the plunge". Who knows, our paths might cross while walking around in wellies. :-) You seem to mention jealousy a lot are you sure you are not trying to convince yourself that you aren't jealous?

They are both similar, which one is the best for you will depend on where you are travelling daily to. Al Reem villas are newer and better quality, great neighbour hood. The Springs wins on location and more nightlife options and the beach nearer by.

I don't know if it's a sincere post or not, but what do you think it's an affordable beach villa? Most villas by the beach are rather plush and I have never heard anyone describe them as affordable..... No difference between Umm Suquiem and the Jumeirah areas, they are all along the same road and beach. Saudi Arabia for a weekend break, what are you planning to visit?

If you feel it isn't enough, maybe bring up going back to work. I have never received pocket money from my husband, but I know that some do and will not judge. Keep receipts, explain that is hard to manage on the money he gives. He might be clueless to how much things actually cost. Don't tell him that you like to shop, in husbands ear it's like wasting money. Just show how much the kind of shoes you need cost and that you will not be able to afford topping up on the occasional piece of clothes on the money he gives. Your baby is also growing, so it's always something you need to get.

The landlord is wrong and you have a case in rera, which can go on for month and you could very well be out of pocket once it finished. And if you win the case and move back in, your landlord will hate you, so if anything needs repair I doubt he will do it. The rental market has softened, wouldn't it be easier just to find something new and build a new relationship with a landlord.
