If your husband is going to be working in Marylebone, I would suggest he commutes from Buckinghamshire, using the Chiltern Railways line, or the Metropolitan tube line, as you can still find good state (public in Canadian English :D) schools (grammar schools, even) in the area. Most, if not all, IB schools are private (public in UK English :D) and very expensive. Bucks is a lovely county, with some very pretty places to live and probably marginally better value for money than living in Central London. I'm sure people who have lived in London more recently than I have will be able to give you sound advice, but these are just my first thoughts in answer to your questions. Good luck with the move :) <em>edited by simpleasabc on 02/03/2013</em>

It's unlikely there will be snow in Chamonix itself in April, but who knows.. The one thing you are guaranteed is that there will be snow on the top of the Mont Blanc, though!!

That's a really good idea, [b'>simpleasabc[/b'>. I might give it some thought. To be honest, I am suffering horribly with PND at the moment, and the idea of moving is so, so scary. But you might have a point. I am sorry to hear about your PND, LLL. Do you belong to the Fairy Godmother Club (Dubai)? You might find a godmother in your area to help you with moral and/or practical support. They have just created a new page for support: [u'>[url=https://www.facebook.com/groups/171879439626299/'>https://www.facebook.com/groups/171879439626299/[/url'>[/u'> edited by simpleasabc on 27/02/2013 <em>edited by simpleasabc on 27/02/2013</em>

LLL, I wonder if perhaps you could come to some agreement with your landlord, whereby you tell him that by UAE law, he is obliged to give you 12 months' notice at the end of your contract with him, but that you will try and find somewhere else to live within 3 months, as long as he pays your removal costs and returns your deposit in full? I'm only suggesting this because as rents seem to be going up rapidly, you might do better rent-wise to start on a new renewable contract, which will stay the same rent for two years, in three months rather than a year's time. Just a thought..

Thanks for the suggestion, Egg, but I'm afraid that's worthy beyond my scope - it was a really light-hearted blog with inner depth, but nothing as serious as Karin Evans. Any more vaguely relevant blogs, please? edited by simpleasabc on 26/02/2013 Bump, please.

The rent committee and RERA both told me recently that the landlord can give you 90 days notice to move out. [b'>If you the tenant don't agree to moving then they have to give you 12 months notice.[/b'> edited by starsouthern on 26/02/2013 Ah, that's the important part, isn't it :D

I am horrified that you will knowingly allow a molester to go free to attack another person, because you have no faith in the country that you reside in. You choose to live here, I assume for monetary reasons, and yet you doubt the system. I have made a few cases against individuals (including an incident where I was held with a gun to my head by a drug crazed highly influential individual) and have never had my passport taken from me. If we are to feel compassion for you, then I do hope that you are extending the same to his next victim. Apologies if this comes across as rude CMM, but I feel compelled to defend Buttercup in this instance as I think this is an unnecessarily harsh judgment of her actions. She did what she felt comfortable doing in a country not her own as a foreigner married to another foreigner. I think it is unfair to expect her to push the bounds of a foreign legal system despite not understanding it and thereby possibly risking her own situation just to track down a security guard her brushed against her. That is asking too much in my opinion. Also, if I may say, bit of a double standard considering on another thread you are advising the SA lady to keep well away from her daughter's boyfriend's problems. I understand the circumstances are different, but Buttercup obviously feels she has a lot to lose and it's not worth it for her. If she takes action with the guard's employer, that should be good enough and in any case, who are we to order her what to do?

Check with RERA, but I've a feeling (only from what I've read on here, not from personal experience) that whatever your contract may say, he is legally bound, at the end of your contract, to give you 12 months' notice that he wants to sell. He would have to sell with you as sitting tenants and you would still have to get a year's notice from the end of your original contract before you would be forced to leave by the new owner. I might be completely wrong in my understanding though, so much the best to ask RERA.

As you've probably found out, there are two RC churches in Dubai, St Francis at Jebel Ali: http://www.stfrancisjebelali.ae/sacraments.htm - click on the link to "prerequisite for Baptism" and it will tell you all about what you need to do. There is also St Mary's on Oud Metha Street in Bur Dubai, their website is less enlightening but I'm sure if you contact them, they will be able to help: http://www.saintmarysdubai.com/contacts.asp. I can't help you with personal experience as ours was baptized Greek Orthodox in Athens some 17 years ago! Good luck!

I hope you are feeling better today, Buttercup. If you feel strong enough, perhaps you could return to see this security guard with your husband, and tell him that you are reporting his behaviour to his employer, and then do just that. If you don't feel up to it, try and learn from it and then forget it and move on with self-defence classes. By the way, can anyone here recommend any such classes in New Dubai, please?

I've only visited Vancouver, which is a beautiful city. Stanley Park and Granville Island are the first two things I think of when I remember our visit (they probably each have their own websites which would be worth looking at); Horseshoe Bay is lovely; the top of the Post Office tower is quite something (can't match the Burj Kakifa, of course!). We went up Grouse Mountain to see the grizzly bears and birds of prey; also, went to the Planetarium. We also spent time in Seattle, which is about an hour and a half's drive away and worth a visit. Vancouver Island is also supposed to be great. This might help: http://www.tourismvancouver.com/do/ Have a great time! <em>edited by simpleasabc on 25/02/2013</em>

I wouldn't worry about 40 lessons as each lesson only lasts half an hour and you can do the lessons in 2 hour batches twice a week, which means you can take the test after 5 weeks. Much to her teacher's surprise, my daughter recently failed first time, for 6 spurious reasons which the examiner filled in randomly at the end of the test and which bore no relation to what had actually happened during her test. The following week, after the compulsory 8 extra lessons, she passed with no problem whatsoever.. I can't recommend any particular driving school, but you can't get round the 40 lessons here and you have to hope you're lucky on the day you take your test. Apparently, a good tip to pass first time is to tell the examiner you've already failed a couple of times..

I just have a slight concern that I seem to remember having read somewhere that people have been fined for parking a car on the road for any length of time, and on the pavement for longer than 3 or 4 hours, in Emaar communities. No idea if this is correct, or if it applies anywhere else.

She should park her cars in her garage not her driveway, that will solve the problem. Who says she has the right to that piece of road to park on anyway? Mind you, you might find it's not legal for either of you to have a car parked on the road for longer than a few hours at a time..

Pierchic is the best, thought it's not exactly the Souk. They don't do breakfast but if you ask for the set menu it's a good deal, AED175 per head. You must like seafood, though! Tables outside have wonderful views of the Burj al Arab, the sea and the Madinat itself. Otherwise, the Meat Company has quite a nice view, depending on where outside you're sitting. I'm afraid I can't name any other restaurants in the Souk which have a view of the Burj. Or, you could sit on the terrace at the lobby restaurant of the Al Qasr hotel and have a bit to eat, with lovely views of the sea and the Burj.

But you say it's only likely to be one more court appearance? How many hours is that likely to take? I should think it was worth it to have somebody who knows what it's about, rather than a total stranger, finish this off for you, after all the hassle you've had.

I'm not Starssouthern, but yes, I believe you can use that - you just have to show it to your Landlord and tell him you're going to RERA if he insists on raising your rent. He may well give you a year's notice to leave or to pay more on your next contract with him and it is up to you to decide what to do then. I think - I've only gleaned this from the expert Expat Women on this forum, not lived it myself.
