We used one of the special offer vouchers for Bab al Shams - it was valid for a particular month, we booked one room on our chosen date and got another similar room free for the same night. I think you could also get two consecutive nights for the price of one. You pay whatever is the going rate for the date and type of room you choose, if you see what I mean, but get two for the price of one.

Have you tried asking at any of the Boots outlets here? If not, you could beg on the babies' board to see if someone has any spare they will let you have, or buy from here and hope it arrives quickly: http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/metanium-nappy-rash-ointment_1_3407.html If you need a shop & ship address, you can use mine, put up your email addy and I'll send you my details if you want.

The Rotana is fine, I've also stayed at the Danat and I remember seeing a lot of families there, they have a large pool and big garden area to play in. It's a slightly older hotel but not bad at all. I think you might mean Green Mubazzarah at the base of Jebel Hafeet? That looks lovely, we hadn't spotted it or heard about it before now. Will investigate next time we go. http://www.alainenthusiast.com/weekend-fun/green-mubazzarah/

From their website: Quote: Academic programmes in Dubai have the same validation and monitoring system as in London, with the same examinations taken simultaneously in both cities. The Honours and Masters degrees awarded to Dubai campus students are therefore identical to those achieved by students at the London campuses, and students can transfer between campuses if they wish. Whether in London or Dubai, Middlesex University students are prepared for a significant role in the global economy. Unquote.

I don't know anything much about the place, but would just say that since it is an outpost of the Middlesex University in London, there doesn't seem to be any reason why the diplomas aren't recognized outside this region.

Before contacting her directly, I would like to know how sponsoring her would work and whether the employer would have to pay for food and accommodation on top of the AED2500 a month?

I'm curious, in these circumstances, is it possible for the employer to state that if the maid doesn't take a flight home during the contractual period, the employer is under no obligation to pay the maid the flight money in lieu? On my husband's current contract, his company will pay for so many trips back to Europe per year, up to a certain maximum sum, but the company organizes the flights themselves and if we don't use them, we are certainly not given the money we haven't spent in lieu. Is it any different because we're talking about maids?

Is panforte the same as panettone? If so, I've definitely seen it for sale in Milk & Honey, and also in Spinneys at times of RC celebration (Christmas, Easter, papal resignation).

Oh, you poor thing, Chocobella, that's awful - really goes to prove you are what you eat, doesn't it :( Sorry, but I was having serious fits about organic chicken, which is the only type I buy here, also being full of hormones (you never know, unfortunately, what with horse in beef products elsewhere..). You need to get to the Organic Food Store on Thursday evening or early Friday morning for the chicken, as it goes really fast.. Best to ring and ask them if it's arrived yet as I've often been to the one in the Greens and been told they've not had a delivery that week. Spinneys Town Centre seem to get fresh organic chicken in on Thursdays, too, and that goes quite fast, as well.

It is down to badly behaved parents, not simply badly behaved children. Children or babies of any age should not be allowed into late night movie showings, it's ridiculous, adults should be able to have at least one movie-showing a day which is child-free.

Does anyone know where I could find organic chicken which is not plumped with Estrogen? I'm confused, I thought the whole idea of organic chicken was that it was *not* pumped full of oestrogen, and am dismayed to think that stuff labelled organic might have added hormones. Or is this just my misunderstanding of the post above? Spinneys sometimes has fresh organic chicken and as Daza says, the Organic Food shops also do, but it sells out very quickly.

You can't turn up anywhere at the Burj without a reservation, in my not-so-recent experience - if your name's not on the list at the security gate, then that's that - unless they've changed their system in the past year or so. Nathalie, am not sure if kids are allowed in the Sky View bar - we went late one night with our teenager and there was no problem, but we were fortunate to be with a Jumeirah employee at the time. They are very helpful if you ask them. http://www.jumeirah.com/en/Hotels-and-Resorts/Destinations/Dubai/Burj-Al-Arab/Restaurants-And-Nightlife/Skyview-Bar/ Looks like not :(

Yes, or having cocktails in the SkyView bar one evening. It's quite expensive for any of the options, though, and I think they've brought in a minimum charge per head. Well worth doing at least once, though. The outside aircon is something else :D

The other guideline is at age of 35 you should have at least one annual salary as savings in cash... at age of 45 you should have 3 annual salaries as savings and at 55 - 5 annual salary and at 65 - 8 annual salaries Ah yes, in that fantasy world where everybody can shovel large amounts of savings away while still enjoying a nice life. Must be nice to live there :) So relieved it's not just me. Presuming the original remarks do not cater for paying for children's schooling and further education..

This is simple and never fails to impress. Your 10 year old (oops, sorry, maybe 10 month old not up for it!) can help by crushing the biscuits (put them in ziplock freezer bag in pieces, put on hard surface and bash with a rolling-pin till in small crumbs). Mascarpone and Lime Torte 200g ginger (or other) biscuits, crushed 50g butter, melted 2 x 250g (500g by any other name) tubs mascarpone cheese 40g icing sugar, sifted finely grated zest and juice of 2 limes (or 1 lemon or 1 orange) Mix biscuits and butter and press into 18cm/7in spring-sided or loose-bottomed cake tin Beat everything else together (can add 1-2 tablespoons fruit liqueur) and spread over biscuit base. Chill for 30 mins. That's it! Can decorate with lime slices or grated chocolate or melted chocolate drizzled over (I never bother with that stuff - it's delicious as is.) edited by simpleasabc on 13/02/2013 edited by simpleasabc on 13/02/2013

Presumably if he is holding the children's passports, they are British ones? Would the Australian Embassy let you apply for passports on your children's behalf, or could you have them put on your own passport? In any case, if I were you, there is no way I would leave my children with him, he sounds too emotionally precarious to me. You are right, you need to consult a lawyer asap. I don't know if the people at this number will be able to help you, but you could give it a try.. The British Community Assistance Fund (BCAF) - 24 hour Helpline Telephone: (04) 337-1413. I realise you are not British, but they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who could help you. Good luck. edited by simpleasabc on 11/02/2013

Really sorry to hear this. Don't know what to say but give sympathy. I've a couple of questions, if you don't mind answering them. If he leaves the house now and then you leave in a week, will he move back in, or do you both have to leave for some reason he's not telling you? Is there a reason behind his present behaviour apart from reaction to medication? Is there a problem with your husband's job? Does the house go with the job? Perhaps you should consider going home for a holiday whilst he sorts all this out.

Curious, Oopsiedaisy, if you're not interested in Botox, why read the thread? Because it fitted nicely with the long hair over 40 and the matching handbag threads. If you check my post, you will see I was wondering how many EW were going to admit to having Botox. Boy, was I surprised!! ? Sorry, missed your wondering! Personally am worried about the dog. Have no need of botox or fillers as my fat naturally obscures wrinkles and makes me look 10 years younger :D

We get a similar monthly salary and live in Dubai [b'>but on top of that we get medical ins, 3brm villa, Dewa paid, annual ticket home and schooling.[/b'> We easliy save money but it would be very diffficult if the big things weren't included. School hours here are different to Australia. For the 3-4 year olds they go from 7.30-8am to about 12-12.30. (approx) Then as they get older they stay until 2.30-3pm depending on the school. It makes finding work hard unless you have someone to pick them up or use the school bus and someone at home to meet them. Then you need a maid. Good luck I think TimTam has got to the heart of it. Good luck in your decision - but unless you have no other option in Brisbane, I don't think I would risk it, if I were you. I get the wanting an adventure part - and maybe if you came knowing you had to adhere to a strict budget, you would get something out of it - pastures new, a completely different local culture, exposure to people from many other countries - but I'm really not sure. Good luck with the decision, again. And don't forget to ask, why Ajman? :D

October has just reminded me that in Greece, it is standard practice to hire your wedding dress. Long before the present economic crisis, I remember being surprised at friends hiring their dress for the occasion, but it is really a practical thing to do and that way ladies can wear the meringue of their dreams without worrying about the cost :)
