Some schools have the whole of this week off, and others have some or all of next week, I believe.

I used to love cooking with gas, but had to use electric for 20 years before coming here and really got used to my induction hob. Was delighted to get a gas cooker here, but it has not lived up to my expectation and if I could, I would go back to an induction hob in a trice.

If you're going OTT on everything else, I wouldn't risk it in those circs. If you can find the same pre-loved dress in a shop in this area, where you can see the condition and try it on, then yes, I would go for it. Just my tuppence worth :)

Sorry, Juzzrach, had never heard of this before your post. Have you seen this, though? Perhaps you could contact the lady concerned and she might be able to advise you? http://www.momsouq.com/inspirational_mom_post.php?mom_id=4

Oh, that's a shame, MissStranger. Sorry, I'm afraid in that case I've got no idea, as we keep our dog inside. Perhaps you could ask K9 Friends if they could suggest some- where/one?

Apologies if I've missed someone else mentioning it amongst all the good advice you've been getting - but don't forget the start-up costs if you don't ship all your worldly goods over with you - and even if you do! Two and a half years on, we've only just finished paying off our debt on the stuff we had to buy (mostly second-hand on Dubizzle) when we first moved into our villa - fridge/freezer, cooker, dishwasher (we don't have a live-in maid ;) ) sofas, beds, mattresses, curtains, blinds, garden furniture.. Also, medical insurance is very necessary. This living in Ajman and commuting to Dubai doesn't sit well with me on your behalf. Good luck with your Skype chat and your decision.

There have been quite a few threads on this in the past, if you put "dog air conditioning" into the search function, this is the most recent one to come up, but there are more: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic185755-anyone-know-where-i-can-get-an-air-conditioned-dog-house.aspx

I assume it will now be affected by this? http://www.arabianbusiness.com/uae-s-emirates-id-card-gets-new-name-487889.html Quote: The name of the the UAE's Emirates ID card will be changed to Resident Identity card for all non-UAE citizens from February, the Gulf state's Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) said. The cards, currently called Identity Cards for expat and Emiratis, will be changed in line with recommendations from the Federal National Council, which requested authorities distinguish between foreigners and UAE citizens. Expats already in possession of Emirates ID cards will not need to replace them until they have expired, said EIDA. Unquote.

I was somewhere out of my comfort zone this afternoon (Jumeirah) and I swear, I have never seen so many botoxed longerthanshoulderbladeplatinumblondehaired skinny women in one place. Not a pretty sight. [b'>Bet they were all lasered and plumped with fillers too. [/b'> It's better to not be too skinny as you get older as the face can look too gaunt, even Liz Hurley said that recently and she should know. I honestly have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm obese and wrinkly with short hair.

I just read on the handbag and matching purse thread that one should not wear long hair after 40. Why???? Am I a loser??? You're never 40? Long hair clearly makes you look younger :) That being said, one of my daughter's Montessori school teachers had long grey/white locks which really just made her look like the aged hippy she was.. Didn't suit her, but she was a lovely person nonetheless.

I gather Garmin are the best for coverage. We have two useless ones by a brand which has gone out of business and keeps telling us to take the second exit at non-existent roundabouts. I wonder, does anyone know, if I was to buy a Garmin model here, would it allow me to purchase maps for the US and Europe?

If Busybee is right, as I'm sure she is, you're best off not engaging with them and just ignoring it completely. If they carry on harrassing you, then I would in fact place it in the hands of the police, not that there's much more that they can do, if there's a lifelong ban on her returning here because she took the amnesty.

This is the wrong thread for nugget-gate, right, TB? :D Salt and vinegar crisps and a brownie used to go down well with mine when she was little. If I put anything remotely healthy in her lunch-box, she would throw it away or bring it home to be thrown away. (Blue touch paper lit, I'm now standing well back.) In reality, I made sure she went to a school which had a choice of healthy hot meals on offer every day. Even then, apparently she only ever ate the bread..

Kan2g, I've been searching for one of those in vain since we arrived in Dubai over two years ago. I want one of those where you can sit at it without your knees knocking against the drawers, if you see what I mean, and I haven't found one of those yet. Looking at the Homes R Us catalogue, I can't see anything like that there either, I'm afraid :(

Still in bed having coffee too, shameful and lazy ....but nice! I'm going to do [b'>shepherds pie ( or cottage pie, depends where you're from)[/b'> with veg. Then apple and cherry crumble with custard. Nice for a rainy day. Food pedant alert: Nowadays, shepherd's pie is made with lamb, and cottage pie with beef, so it doesn't depend where you're from, but which left-over meat the pie is made of :D It's still rainy and grey in our bit of the Meadows. Reminds me of last summer in London, not in a good way :( We've got guests coming from Greece soon, it would be just our luck if it rained when they were here, when they need cheering up :) Anyone know of a reliable weather forecast site for this area?

DH thinks it's not an unreasonable request with most people "having to live with their in laws 24/7" (is he living in stone age or am I living in a bubble??) [b'>and we are most likely moving back to the states in a few months so he wants to spend as much time with them as he can. [/b'> So should I just bite the bullet and deal? How can I compromise to make it easier for me? OR should I be the unreasonable, stubborn one and fight it? He is living in local stone age, as it were. You are possibly living in a western bubble. Difficult. If you think the likelihood is really that you will be moving back to the States in a few months, if I were you, I would bite the bullet and deal. If it transpires that you don't go back after a few months, THEN you are going to have to be unreasonable and stubborn and fight it. You're better off having been reasonable and amenable in the first place, so you can't be accused of not having tried, and you are coming from a stronger position, if you see what I mean.

I love Pierchic, simply for its location. Watching the sun set from the roof-top bar at Bab Al Shams is pretty romantic, too :) The place I've never been, but would love to go, though it's not actually in the UAE, but in Oman, is Six Senses Zighy Bay - it looks fantastic and romantic :)

When I worked in London, (I wasn't a student there and anyhow can't for the life of me remember what I spent on living costs when I was a student, though I remember paying 8 quid a week for a room in a flat share in 1975), I calculated on the basis that my rent/mortgage was a third of my gross monthly income. Would doing a sum like that work for you?

We won't be going to the Westin any more, as we regularly would use the vouchers for both "Blue Elephant" and "Hunters", but they're no longer in the Entertainment book, as we discovered, much to our chagrin the other day :( Ah, well, plenty of other restaurants in the book, but not with such good views :)

May I say congratulations for her graciousness, I think this is a wonderful thing for her to do, she has been a superb monarch who will be remembered for her goodness and allowing her son to take the reins whilst he's still young is a great gesture. She is to be greatly admired. I write as a not very Royalist Brit.

I understand from teachers I know that any time before they have to start studying a specific curriculum for national external examinations is fine (ie probably before the age of 14 in the British Curriculum), but trying to keep up with home schooling at the level they should be is a very good idea. They'll automagically cover geography and a second or third language, at least, with Central and South America, in any case:D Have a great trip, whenever you go, and enjoy :D Oh, the only thing is, I don't think I'd do it at a time when they would be moving from primary to secondary as they would come back to a second year where everyone knows each other and they might feel the odd one out. Either older or younger than that would be better, I think.

There's the latest season of Lewis on at the moment, but I don't find it as good as they are dividing what would have been one episode in the past, into two, so you have to wait a week to find out the ending. There are various Scandidramas about, which I gather are good, though have never got into them myself, rubbish with sub-titles.. (Borgen, Season 2, BBC Four, for one, as well as the original "Wallander", of course.) Was about to post the same question - didn't even get my fix of The Good Wife this week - something to do with somebody famous's swearing in for a second term, I presume.

fils Thank you for the clarification. I assumed the singular would be minus the 's' eg. 1 fil, 50 fils. In the same way that it's 1 dollar but 50 dollars. Interesting that it's not, you learn something every day! Yes, thanks CaptainGerrys, what's the plural, then? Also fils?
