Choueifat is the best school in Dubai if you want your kids to get into the best universities I wonder - the best universities where? Anyhow, not according to this (I hold no brief, just quoogled Chouieifat and found the SABIS system, it may well just be disgruntled teachers - but I don't quite understand which curriculum it is?). http://internationalschoolsreview.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=281&sid=e4cd14e65ec1faedbd2818adffc801e9 It's his own system that he created as he believes education is a bit like McDonald all children learn the same and will come out the same. Gobsmacked.. and this works, does it?

We have found the condition in my mother has been alleviated by her having proper care and being given her medication at the right times and in the right doses. I'm sorry, I can't go into it here, it's not a pleasant thing to live through and it is still ongoing. It sounds as if she is suffering from a different form of dementia, as hers has worsened progressively stroke after stroke and has gone downhill since the death of both her sisters. I'm afraid your friend's father has a different "version" and I cannot comment as to his treatment, particularly if he is suffering from bipolar disorder as well as dementia. All I can say is that it is *rude words* and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Best wishes to you and your friend's family in coping with this.

I'm afraid dementia varies from person to person, but is always awful. Maybe depending on the type of dementia, there could be some way of alleviating it, but no, there is definitely no cure, it just worsens progressively at a slower or faster rate, depending on treatment. Sorry to put such a downer on it, but have been living with my mother's vascular dementia for a while now and know it will never improve. Depending on the care, symptoms will improve or not.

Seems like this lady was inspired by Adele Enersen, an artist and illustrator who has a blog called 'Mila's Daydreams'. She has a book coming out this year if anyone is interested: http://milasdaydreams.blogspot.com I knew I'd seen something similar a while ago, thanks for the reference to the original :)

Wuffles, I'm a complete technophobe as far as these advanced phones are concerned, but have a techno-savvy teenager and from what I understand, it is possible to use Skype even on pay-as-you-go, though it may be more expensive than on a contract. Don't quote me, though..

Shame, Wuffles, as it sounds as if investing in an iphone (or maybe Blackberry, I don't know?) would save a lot in calls to Australia in the long run?

I always go to Yanni at the Ibn Battuta hotel. She's great at colour as well as cutting hair. It's close to the Greens too. http://www.facebook.com/YanniSalon I'm sure I've seen this recommendation on FB from someone who doesn't have blonde highlights in their hair, so obviously Yanni is a good all-rounder - may well give her a try, thank you. edited by simpleasabc on 09/10/2012

Royise, yes, that was last year's price and as I said, we really enjoyed it, particularly my nephew from Vancouver who absolutely stuffed his face, though no booze involved for him, of course :) No idea if they will increase prices this year as we have decided to treat ourselves to Al Qasr for the experience, despite the exhorbitant cost, as it might be our last Christmas in Dubai, who knows. By the way, the best part of the "live entertainment" for us was the choir of Bab Al Shams employees singing Christmas carols right at the end! Fairycakeyumm, we think BAS is lovely and you might want to do a little recce one evening and go up there for an apero to watch the sunset from the roof bar. It takes us about three-quarters of an hour from Meadows, taking the back road past Arabian Ranches and Sports City (sorry, don't know its name or number), going straight all the way till the Dubai Endurance City turn off on the right. I think there may be a different route from the Villa, but it's nearer than we are:) Geordie Expat, know just what you mean, maybe somewhere like the Rib Room or the Ivy would suit you better? Maybe Traiteur? In fact, the stuff for kids at BAS was quite unobtrusive and if you didn't want to be bothered by it, you weren't.

Roysie, the buffet at Bab Al Shams Christmas lunch was fantastic, there was Indian and Italian (at least) as well as traditional turkey, roast beef and roast lamb and all the trimmings. I'm afraid I can't remember the cost last year, but will just have a quick look in my old inbox to see if I've still got details. OK, quoting from an email I got from them last year: "Entertainment: Live Band Activities: Santa Claus gift giving, face painting, kids games, balloon art making, kite flying and pony rides Above Christmas Brunch package is at AED 295.00 per person, inclusive of soft drinks and still water. Applicable 50% discount for children from 5 – 12 yrs and children 4yrs and below dines for free. You may avail our Beverage Package at AED 195 per person which includes full open regular bar. Early Booking promotion: Discount 10% Discount - applicable for confirmed reservation made from 1st – 30th November 2011" Here are the contact details I had last year: Nishu Maan Restaurant Reservation | BAB AL SHAMS Email: [email protected] Office: +971 4 8096194 Fax: +971 4 8326698 Al Qudra Road, P.O. Sim, if you're living in the Meadows area, you're very near the Lakes and the club. You can go in to have a look - find your way to the Lakes entrance and tell security you want to go to the club. It is a Fitness First gym, with two outdoors pools and a bar and restaurant and a play area for younger children. If you join Fitness First, you will have access to the gym and pool at the Lakes Club and also at Fitness First and The Town Centre and the other one whose name completely escapes me, next to Emirates International School in Meadows. In any case, you don't have to be a member to go to the Lakes Club bar/restaurant, so you can go and have a recce before deciding. As you will probably have found out by now, DUCTAC is the Arts centre at the MoE. I'm afraid my daughter is no help as she is so much older (4 years difference is a wealth of experience at that age, I understand :( ). I remember though, one way she made friends when she first arrived here was by attending after-school activities, so she would get/give lifts home to children who lived in the same area.

I might bring the mommy police out for what I'm about to say because I know it is common here for people and the hospitals to bundle up the newborns... but it is a myth that they need extra layers. You can dress your newborn in the same amount of clothing as you would dress your self to be comfortable.... Also it is actually helpful for them to sleep in a cool room, it reduces the risk of SIDS. Yes, overheating them is not a good thing for babies, just cover her to protect from fierce aircon, but she really won't need to be wearing too much in these outdoor temps.. Winter here is like summer in England, remember :) Only warmer ;) You don't want her getting heat rash :( edited by simpleasabc on 07/10/2012

Why can't the owners/landlords be obliged to pay the entire community service charges a year in advance, just as many tenants have to pay their entire rent a year in advance? The tenants wouldn't renew or move in until they had proof from the owner/landlord that the charges had been paid for the forthcoming year.

For future reference, according to an insider, Al Qasr brunch on 25th December is usually fully booked by mid-September. I have a hard time to believe that! I might have been exaggerating, possibly the words were "fully booked by the beginning of September." :\: We were all confirmed on 20th September, having made the tentative booking at the end of August..

No, we just moved in, why would me move out? if the fees remain unpaid at the end of the year when our renewal is up, we will file a complaint with the Rent Committee. Our rent cheque to the LL will be X amount minus what they owe and that's that edited by derien on 07/10/2012 So emaar will have won..... that's why they are doing this. edited by mrswhippy on 07/10/2012 Yes, I suppose but still, this has also created alot of hassle for tenants and we are being extremely victimised But if they had not done this you wouldn't have bothered to pay the service fees..... so desperate times; desperate measures. Sorry but what else are Emaar / Nakheel meant to do? At least allow tenants to know where they stand before they sign a contract with a landlord who hasn't paid their community fees so the tenants are likely to be penalized.

Emaar is in a difficult situation too, it must be incredibly frustrating to have some owners who owe tens of thousands and have no intention of paying. I think it need a law change. If Emaar had the power to seize and sell the properties of owners who continuously refused to pay then I'm sure they'd all pay up rather than lose their investment. Agreed, but is that ever likely to happen? ETA: drownedinthenile, yes, you're right of course, so what on earth is the solution? edited by simpleasabc on 07/10/2012

@Karabalta: Are you really advocating rubbish piling up outside tenants' houses, creating a stench and attracting vermin and possibly causing disease? Because that's how it sounds. I don't think she is advocating for that, but a rule is a rule. [b'>Surely Emaar realizes what the consequences will be if they allow rubbish to pile up.[/b'> And isn't Emaar owned by the Maktoum family? Not sure I would want to start breaking rules set by them. Apparently not, judging by their current behaviour. I have also noticed people resorting to throwing their rubbish into the desert area by the pylons at the back of the Springs/Meadows. That's hardly sanitary either, is it? edited by simpleasabc on 07/10/2012

Mrswhippy, I remember a dustman's strike in London in the late 80's/early 90's - that is where my disgust at the idea of leaving rubbish to fester here comes from. It is quite simply a serious Public Health issue and I sincerely feel that Emaar should not be allowed to carry out this form of punishment for non-payment as it affects the whole community, but not the landlords who are refusing to pay. It's the wrong way to go about it, it is not hitting the right people directly.

That's right, tenants should demand proof community service fees have been paid. And they won't if an alternative system to go around Emaar's rubbish collection rule is developed. Tenants do not have access to this information. Emmar only deal with the LL directly. We got the 60K through another source ( that I will not reveal). Best way to deal with this would be for RERA to be given powers to intervene and punish the LL's either by placing an injunction on the house or by allowing tenants to "deduct" the amount overdue from the rent and pay the balance to the LL. NOT by stopping the collection of rubbish which, as you can see, is penalising the entire community rather than the LL who don;t even live there As you say, that would only work if prospective tenants had access to the information. I repeat, this is a Catch 22 situation and at the moment, everyone but the non-paying landlords is suffering.

Simps - we are affected by this as our LL owes 60K in fees. We are currently paying to have our trash removed..... It is a real problem for the whole community! I do understand your predicament though. Would have been nice if your neighbours had asked first. It's a terrible situation - it seems that the refuse collectors employed by Emaar are not allowed to collect rubbish from tenants whose landlords have not paid, even if the tenants offer to pay themselves for the rubbish removal, so what on earth can the tenants do about this? May I ask who you are using yourself? We are using Dulsco :-) That's very interesting - are they already the refuse collectors in your area?

Can they not look on the community noticeboard to see who are the offending LLs? In the Greens, they publicly named and shamed the non payers and anyone entering any of the buildings could clearly see the list by the elevator as to who had paid and who had fees outstanding. I think the same is true of the Palm Shorelines. This info should be made public as I would never want to move somewhere where there were fees outstanding and risk having access to things curtailed. Tenants should demand written proof before they hand over their deposit cheques. The name and shame board has been up since the summer, but before that, how could new tenants who are now suffering the consequences have found out? I know we're lucky to be in a property owned by someone who has paid the community charges, but we might just as well have landed up renting from someone who didn't, when we arrived here wet behind our Dubai ears a couple of years ago - this has only become an issue this year, hasn't it?

I feel sorry for the tenants, but it is the owners who are breaking the law. They are collecting rent and not paying the service fee. If the tenants have to suffer, that is really unfortunate but if they don't put pressure on their landlords to comply with the law, nothing will change. How can tenants who have already had to pay a year's rent in advance put pressure on the landlord to pay their community servce fees? The tenants have absolutely no leverage whatsoever. People who have experienced this will now check when they move to a new home to be sure that the service charges are up to date - but I seem to remember having read somewhere that Emaar doesn't allow tenants access to this information before they sign a new contract, so it really is a kind of Catch 22 situation.

[b'>Maybe you can start your own racket offering rubbish collection at yours for a fee ;)[/b'> Only joking. It is in the whole neighbourhood's best interests to have rubbish removed which will otherwise only attract vermin. Why not leave a note as this could be an owner who doesn't want to pay their fee? I'm liking this idea :) Oh, against the law :( Actually, I checked to see which villas in our street have been named and shamed on the notice board and will be keeping a sharp eye out - I have a fair idea who it might be and am reasonably sure they are tenants. They could have asked, though. As long as the refuse collectors take it all away, it is a satisfactory solution and I can understand tenants feeling forced to go to these lengths if they have no other option. It is the owners who refuse to pay their fees who are creating these problems. edited by simpleasabc on 07/10/2012

Personally, I believe the residents that allow the "service fee dodgers" to have their rubbish collected are colluding with the owners who are not paying the service fee. Why would you help them break the law? Why would they pay their service fees if they can still have their rubbish collected? Where are the ethics in that? What law? If you had read my post properly, you would have seen I sympathized with tenants - it is not their fault if their Landlord doesn't pay the community service fees out of the rent the tenants have paid up front. It is the owners who are the "service fee dodgers" not the tenants and I really object to that. As to having other people's rubbish collected with mine, well yes, funnily enough, I prefer that to having mounds of uncollected unsanitary decomposing rubbish left on the streets, with all the health and safety problems which would quickly arise in this heat - I really don't want rats as big as cats spreading disease in my area, thank you very much. I understand that in our area, Emaar do not allow tenants to pay for the private collection of their rubbish, which is another story, so what other solution is there?

My daughter's at WIS but older - her social life isn't brilliant but that's partly because she's made it that way and partly because she is working for the IB Diploma this year. I'll ask her if she knows anything about the younger ones - I should imagine their parents deem them too young just to go out with friends here in Dubai. JBR and the Marina Walk used to be the favourite Thursday night meeting place for teens when we first arrived here, when my daughter was 15, but that seems to have fallen out of favour. I'm not sure if the younger ones participated, either. I have every sympathy with you, a lonely only daughter is a sad, worrying sight. Perhaps you could join the Lakes club and at least she could go swimming there at week-ends and maybe meet up with other kids her age? Maybe classes at DUCTAC might be fun? Good luck, I hope she settles in soon.

If the health clinic thought it necessary to contact your husband, I would suggest they think it important. Worth going to talk to a doctor about it, anyway, and see what they say.
