In the immortal words of Michael Winner, calm down, dear. Sorry to hear this has happened, but you need to bring the stress levels down a notch or three or you'll be in no fit state by Friday. OK, was this your usual hairdresser who let you down? Whether it was or not, call your usual hairdressing salon and explain what has happened, beg and plead for their help. If they won't help, call round some salons and explain. I know of a Salon which is open on Friday mornings, on Al Wasl Road, can't remember the name but they may be able to help. Will get back to you. Have you got your husband's papers showing EID being applied for? Otherwise, get your husband to take his residency visa, your tenancy contract and insist what they are doing is wrong. Don't worry about seating plan, just have the people you want near you and let the rest of them get on with it. Start when you're ready. The Bride is allowed to be fashionably late.. Can't help you with dress code as I wouldn't know smart chic if it slapped me in the face. And breathe.. Enjoy it as much as you can and have a fab honeymoon.

I'm with Lively Trish. This is seeing evil where there is none. Rather like that mother who was worried about mixed groups of little ones going to the swimming pool together and changing in the same area. Sometimes the corruption is in the minds of the parents, not the children.

Just to add, my daughter has long eaten a wide variety of foods, though pasta is still her starch of choice (with butter and cheese - everything in moderation ;) )

I was also reading that most Lebanese in Australia are Catholic rather than Muslim. Especially ones who have been there for generations.... So where does this disturbing crime of raping women for not covering originate, then? A tiny Lebanese Muslim extremist minority? I'm shocked to read about these rapes carried out by Lebanese men, as some of my best friends are Lebanese (!), albeit mostly Catholic, and that behaviour certainly doesn't jibe with my experience of Lebanese culture.

Well I hate to say it, but that's the risk anyone takes when they buy property! Far too many people thought they could make a quick buck. Rent prices cannot continue to go up, when people aren't getting paid the salaries to afford it. Many companies now don't give separate housing allowance either. I rent, but am just about to be handed over a property I bought in 2007!!! THere's no way, I the rent I can charge will cover the mortgage, so I just have to suck it up for the time being. And that's the way it goes. I admire your realistic attitude, but just wonder why you wouldn't stop paying rent and move into your own property? Bit less to suck up that way, surely?

Thanks, everyone, for a very interesting, revealing discussion. My daughter is presently on a British passport working holiday student visa in Sydney. Granted, she has only just finished school and is on a gap year, but she is finding it very hard to find any employment, even on a temporary basis, as she has no qualifications in child-minding or experience in bar-tending or waitressing. Also, and more to the point for the OP, she is finding it incredibly expensive to live there compared to Dubai. We are still trying to work out why a monthly season ticket for public transport should work out more expensive than buying a return ticket daily, but that is just one of the extra costs she is finding surprising. Groceries and eating out are also far more expensive than here, she finds. Don't get me wrong, she loves it there, but it is by no means a cushy number, even for non-Lebanese :(

Let her be, don't make an issue of it. Give her the option to try what you're having, but pasta's not bad for her, particularly wholemeal. Mine would only eat pasta from the age of about two to the age of about nine or ten. She never ate fruit, either :(

Olene, it depends on what apps you have on your ipad or iphone. We can watch filmon and dailymotion using apps, also, using apps and "special" three-letter add-ons, we can watch BBC, ITV and CBS on demand (and I presume others, just I can't get Homeland and other series to work on any of the several ipad browsers I have now invested in, without registering and/or paying extra, which I don't want to do. But that's another thread, sorry :D).

A bit like yours, my husband got an Apple TV in the States without knowing what it was, because a colleague told him it was good, though he he did know we had Apple products which would work with it at home! It works here; it took my husband less than 5 minutes to set up, the instructions in the box are simple and easy to follow; you can watch all kinds of things from it on your television; it is best if you have Apple products already (Mac computer, iphone or ipad, but I don't know about ipod), so that you can stream films and tv shows from your Apple machine to your Apple TV.

Things which you don't think about that you may use from time to time but which have alcohol in them: vanilla essence, Bach Flowers Rescue Remedy, wine vinegar (you can get cider and balsamic vinegar here but not proper wine vinegar). Bring all your summer clothes, the winter season is in full swing in the shops here!

I blame the estate agents, they push and push for higher rents to get themselves higher commission and in a place where landlords don't seem to mind leaving their properties untenanted for months or even years at a time, the agents win in the end :(

Before you buy a new one, check that the router is properly set up. Also, I believe you can buy gadgets to boost the strength of your wi-fi signal? Otherwise, I hear Belkin are quite good. We have a Cisco Linksys router which isn't bad, it's just we get a very poor signal in our quite large two-floor villa, particularly as we have a lot of machines which use the wi-fi connection. I'm sorry, I can't tell you about Etisalat as we are with Du who don't do w-fi routers at the mo.

Niamh (pronounced Neeve!) at Ted Morgan Motorcity is very good at subtle, delicate highlights. She listens to what you want and is very careful to get it right. My hair is short and I like the way she cuts it, too - again, she does as I ask! I haven't tried Juan Salon, I tried loads of other places before Ted Morgan and I am really happy to go there regularly now, although it is on the expensive end of the spectrum, I think it's worth it.

I am no authority but I have heard it rumoured that they go armed with ID's which indicate they are over 21 - and certainly, some of the school-girls you see round here can pass for over 21 when they're in their full regalia and war-paint.. Um, no, you're not the only parent who thinks it's an absolute no-no if the above scenario is likely to apply.

Try the places in Knowledge Village. They coach in small groups and cost less than having a private and possibly illegal tutor coming to your house. I can suggest the Princeton Review for the ordinary SAT tests and I know they do SATII subject prep as well. Otherwise, I know of another place there which coaches Maths in small groups, I am currently suffering from Alzheimer's Lite but will get back to you if I ever remember its name. You can also google private tutors in Knowledge Village and you will find licensed tutors, I believe.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Dubai! You might find that your husband needs something similar from his own sponsor before you can get the licence. You can use the following format, adapted to the occasion, for anything where you need an "NOC" (No Objection Certificate). Dear Sir/Madam, Please accept this letter as confirmation that I, __________________, holder of ___________ passport No. ________________ have no objection to __________________, holder of ___________ passport No. ______ who is under my sponsorship, obtaining a UAE alcohol licence. Yours,

It sounds as if this is completely inappropriate behaviour for a 9 year old girl and also, from what you say, as if her parents would be thoroughly shocked to find out about it. If I were you, I would share my concerns with the parents, from the point of view of the safety of their daughter, so they are aware and in private, might join up the dots themselves. As you say, if you can, give practical help such as suggesting the name of a counsellor. It's an awkward thing to have to do, though, and you run the risk of being told to get lost. I think you would feel bad about yourself if you didn't make an effort to do all in your power to point out the warning signs to the little girl's parents, though.

Shivi, to be sure, you really need to keep doing the shampoo and combing out with conditioner at regular intervals for a while, because of the life cycle of nits/lice. I can't remember if the recommended gap is 7 or 10 days, but I would check it out.

You don't take the LL to court, it's handled by the Rent Committee. If you had to use the courts, the cost of bringing the case would massively outweigh the compensation you'd receive (which IIRC is a year's rent). And I believe you would get to stay 2 years in the property not 1. I was told that by the litigation team of a well known developer here How would that work if you'd already had to find a new home and sign a new contract before the new tenant moved into your old place? Oops I think he meant if you have to open a case against a LL whilst still in the property I am tired today sorry :-) Hope you've got the day off! I could get into an infinite loop if I carried on asking questions so I think I'll stop! Have a good day!

I remember on a similar thread in the past, there was one lady who sent an email to her guests a week or so in advance of their arrival, setting out the "dos and don'ts" that would be expected of them during their stay. It sounded quite draconian, but was very clear and it made certain that she never had to suffer from selfish, tight guests, as, if they were expecting a free ride, they were aware before they landed that they wouldn't get it! I think she varied the tone depending on how hospitable she wanted to be with each particular guest. It seemed to work well, though, and she hit on this as a solution after a visit from one freeloader too many. I can't find the particular post I was thinking of, beginning to wonder if I imagined it, but this is a good one, I love the "teetotal" guest! http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic107140-the-expense-of-having-visitors.aspx edited by simpleasabc on 14/10/2013

In contrast to some of these stories, my cousin, also my godson, called me last week and I invited him and his wife and three sons to come and stay, preferably during the winter so that they could get away from the Norwegian snows for a bit. We are lucky enough to have room here for all of them, at least for the next year, which is what I told him. His response was: "Oh, no, we couldn't bother you, there are too many of us, we'll try and find a nice little hotel nearby!" OK, so the nearest "nice little hotel" to us is the Address, but it is a sweet thought on his behalf and we will be happy to look after them if they come and stay with us or get a good hotel deal!

What I thought very odd and from what I understand, probably historically inaccurate, was that the attacker was from Anna's own "class" and not from "Upstairs", which I think would have been much more likely. (My grandmother was a Lady's Maid and she met my grandfather when he was Majordomo at the Palace in Madrid so I can claim to know a little bit about it from their stories.) ETA: Extremely shocking and unexpected but very well acted. bintyibbs2, we are talking about episode 3 of season 4, available on an ITV player not necessarily that near you.. edited by simpleasabc on 13/10/2013
