local law gives all support to the male of the species, whatever the rights and wrongs of things. . I actually disagree with this, and think that you should approach the local court here, they will be quite sympathetic. Obviously you cannot stay in the company accommodation, but he has to provide appropriate housing for you. At least for the short term. Apologies, I should have written "from what I have read on EW and elsewhere, I understand that local law.." etc..

Sorry I can't help you at all Fiona, just to give you moral support and to suggest that unless you have a firm job offer and sponsor lined up immediately, your best bet would be to cut your losses and go home as local law gives all support to the male of the species, whatever the rights and wrongs of things. Yikes, am I right in thinking that it only applies to villas? Little old me with my 1BD over here shouldn't have to face that too? Seriously need to consider the merits of home cooked food vs Take out again! After today I may never turn on the oven again! (oh, and on top of this, spent 3 hours boiling evaporated milk instead of condensed milk yesterday for my banoffee pie.....) I thought the housing fee applied to everyone, whether or not they lived in apartments - take a look at your DEWA bills and you'll see whether or not it has been applied. In any case, if you are already paying it, it will stay the same from month to month and is on the DEWA bill already.

From the National (oops, in 2011!): The Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel will celebrate Ramadan for the first time this year by inviting guests to enjoy iftar at Al Bahou. Given the elegant Moroccan-inspired decor, high ceilings and numerous lanterns dangling from the roof, it promises to be an interesting experience. The buffet menu showcases a wide range of Arab dishes, from hot and cold mezze to a selection of cheeses, mixed grills, a live cooking station offering shawarma and saj manakish and, of course, lamb ouzi. Later on in the evening, guests are encouraged to make their way into the adjacent majlis tent to relax and enjoy the music and selection of games on offer. Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel, Ibn Battuta (04 444 5613). Dh140 per person. Just wanted to say to TDB, glad to hear your pregnancy seems to be progressing well and agree about the Meat Co, been v disappointed recently. You can also get good old traditional French steack-frites and a glass of wine at the Entrecote Cafe de Paris at the Al Khaleej Palace Hotel (OK but expensive) and the Relais de l'Entrecote in Festival City (not tried it).

OK, 4 bed villa in Meadows: April to May: up nearly AED700; May to June: up another AED225; June to July: down AED 375. The house was empty for 8 days in July. And I think the gardener may have told me he was stopping watering during Ramadan, but as we don't understand each other, I could have that wrong.

Ours our definitely higher now because of the aircon and people (naming no names) leaving the aircon on low all night in the living-room/dining-room/spare bedrooms. But without AC it shouldn't be should it? And when you are away for 15 days, you expect the bill to reflect that absence don't you? Just going to check our last three DEWA bills.. Back in a mo!

I have every intention of doing that, MrsMozz, as a reward for the appalling time I've been having recently:(

We go to the Al Safa vets for our dog, but they are extremely cat-friendly there - rescue cats always being brought in to them. I can't remember what I paid to get a batch of booster injections, including rabies, for the dog, but I certainly wasn't shocked at the cost, I think it was 600 in total.

Surely there is a salon around who will send a hairdresser into your own home? I know Brush & Co do home mani-pedis, and looking at their site, they seem to do hair as well. http://www.brushandco.net/ I used them once for mani-pedi and they were fine, don't know about hair. I would suggest something like this would be best for you as you are on bed-rest. Good luck!

I assume it is ignorance, pure and simple. We warned some friends from Greece that they should only wear revealing clothing onto the beach and when they arrived, they thought we were mad for being so precious about shorts and strappy tops as everywhere they went, people were wearing far less than they were. They had not read up much about where they were coming to and genuinely didn't realize the requirements for modesty and respect here. It could be the same for people for whom English is not a first language and yet who are resident here, particularly given how people dress when they go out to dinner and clubs..

You feel betrayed and rightly so. You are married and selling real estate should be discussed by both of you before it is done. There seems to be more to this since your DH is acting defensive. Best to talk to him face to face as the truth will not come out over the telephone. MIL should mind her own business imo. Thanks Appletiser! DH has been telling me for the last a few months that his mother is getting old and he feels bad for not being able to look after her etc etc... when I asked where will she live if the house is sold she said between Dubai and UK... what the!!! Im the last one to know If he's trying to present you with a fait accompli, you are right to be furious. Only you know how much you expect him to communicate with you and take important joint decisions for your marriage. My husband knew fine well I resented his mother leeching money from us, though he knew I wouldn't have wanted her to starve, it was just she took money we didn't have from us as if by right, but he would never have tried to impose her coming to live with us without discussing the situation with me. If he had done, he knew what would have happened (I'd have left and screwed him for everything he had). But maybe the dynamics of your marriage are different.

Just checked mine and I went through 2 within the space of 10 minutes and the second one looks as if it was free ??? Yup, I found that on my account, too - but each time it was the same gate, as if outward and return journey, perhaps? Whoops, sorry, got it wrong, checked my Salik account, it seems to be a toll of 6 passes to total of AED24 per day before you get free trips, and if you pass through the same gate within an hour, it also seems to be free.

Yes i opened a SnS account and paid the $45. However, i did not receive any unique number (account number) yet. I don't know if it takes that long. I was about to place the order with my full name only then i went back to the FAQ and found out about the number. Still waiting. Call them, it took about two minutes for me to get mine when I registered, I seem to remember.

I have changed hairdressers here as many times as I've had hot dinners. I went to Inger once and was pleased enough with what she'd done that I made a second appointment with her. I don't know what happened the second time, maybe she was rushed because I arrived late (my own fault for always misjudging how long it takes to get to SZR from my house), but I decided she was too expensive for the result. I also didn't like being pressurized by the receptionist to make my next appointment whilst I was paying for that one. Pastels do my colour beautifully, I am still trying to find someone to give me the right cut!

Sorry, Meagle, can't advise you here, just wanted to welcome you to Dubai and thank you for making my year by spelling advice correctly in the context. (I live a very sheltered, sad, life, I'm the first to admit ;) ) I wish I knew what "chiller free" meant. Is it anything to do with a swimming pool? All I know about JLT is that you need to watch the windows and balconies, particularly if you have young children. They can be dangerous. People fall, either accidentally or in despair. Otherwise, they seem to be OK - I know Indigo tower through my daughter, who says it's fine and it is v close to the metro, which is a great advantage. Best to go and have a look, don't commit before you get here. I think Discovery Gardens, near Ibn Battuta Mall, might be OK for you too? Good luck and thank you again for cheering up my sad life.

That's what I found too mushypeas, and it was all villas in the Springs. They looked like they'd been used as squats. Villas were much better at the Ranches. We found that at some villas we looked at in the Springs - the agent discreetly told my husband that this was because the "facilities" in houses which had been left empty and disconnected but with their doors unlocked, were being used by local gardeners.

Okay ladies, let's see if you can help... A colleague used to wear a perfume and I can't remember the name... I think it may have been an Estee Lauder one, but not sure... it was very light and clean, kind of a cucumber and grass smell with maybe some fresh linen thrown in if you know what I mean... any ideas?!? Didn't Estee Lauder used to make a perfume called "White Linen"? No idea what it smelt like, though, or whether it's still on the market.

Back in the UK recently I went to my local Chinese restaurant and they had a buffet going on. Not the typical lavish spread they throw here, but you could also order from the menu. HOWEVER - if you left any food on your plate, they charged you for it!! Thought it was rather a novel concept and people might think twice here before piling heaps of food onto their plates (as if it's going to run out!!) [b'>Do the hotels allow labourers or the poor to come and take the waste after iftars?[/b'> Is it allowed? Might be a nice idea altho not sure whether it's OK due to food hygiene. Nope, anything leftover from the hotel Iftars all goes in the bin every night regardless of how good it still is. Surely bona fide voluntary organizations could arrange for the collection and distribution of perfectly good food left over from over-catering at hotels all year round? I suppose this possibility has been investigated and found impractical.
