I've just found "Suits" which is currently in its second series and quite fun. Best to watch Series 1 first to get the gist of it, though. There's also something called "Line of Duty" currently showing on BBC1, which is good. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 05/07/2012</em>

We don't have the Travel book, though at this rate I'm thinking of getting it! We used an Entertainer BOGOF voucher at Bab al Shams and got two rooms for the same night at the price of one, IYSWIM? Oh, that's good, do you know if Babs al Shams has interconnecting rooms so you could have the kids in one room and us in the other? That's what we had, they weren't exactly interconnecting, both had their own doors but with a sort of "front door" of their own, IYSIM, so we were separated from the rest of the world as a family, but still in separate rooms. We asked for adjoining rooms and that's what we got. Hmm, Dangerous Blonde, that's interesting and worth enquiring about every time, I suppose. Must depend on the particular hotel's policy. Sorry to digress, just wondered if all well with you and the baby?

Ooh, didn't know you could do that. I was actually thinking of getting the body book but wasn't sure how it worked .. Will I always have to a friend along to avail the free service? :S I think that's what the poster downthread who went with 6 friends and booked 4 rooms at BAS must have done, so it seems quite common. I know what you mean about the Body Book, Billy no mates here would have no one to go with :(

Ras al Khaimah. Is it just me or is there something wrong with that? Anyways, opening soon. I just checked and according to their website, they aren't accepting any reservations and are scheduled to open in December 2012. We happened to have a look at it when we were in RAK the other day and wondered what it was - looks as if it will be magnificent, but agreed, "Waldorf Astoria" belongs to New York :)

Anyone who thinks EK are not up to scratch should check out the apalling service, grumpy crew and crappy aircraft on US carriers such as United and Delta. Ek is a dream compared to them. Another massive reason for Emirates loyalty is Skywards, IMO the best program I have seen from any airline. agreed, united and delta CC= bulldogs in uniforms. SO rude and grumpy. I remember flying United from New York to Boston in 1984 and I was amazed at their unpleasant attitude - I supposed it was just because it was a "commuter shuttle" line or whatever they called it - sort of hop on, do your seat-belt up and hop off again. Didn't realize this attitude was prevalent on long-haul flights as well :(

Is it not possible to get the visa online? Or at least start the process? Or have you already done that? We're from countries to which the 90-day visa waiver applies, so I suppose things are easier for us as until now, we've just pitched up at the US Embassy, queued, (paid, I assume - when I say we I mean my husband ;) ) handed our passports in and hung around for a few hours till we got the visa. This was in Switzerland, though, probably different here.

BiscuitMuncher, we haven't had that experience so far, I reckon it probably applies more to primary than secondary school children, what do you think? If your children are in a fast-growing phase, I'd leave getting uniforms till the week before school starts. If you go quite early on a week-day, there won't be as much of a scrum as there is in the evenings after work or at week-ends. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 05/07/2012</em>

Our move was so last minute, I didn't have much time to be worried about it, though I'd known it was in the air and had been on this forum for months before we arrived. Has your DH found a place for you to live yet? Please, learn from my mistake and make sure you get pest control in before you move in - we're still suffering from not having bothered about it, even though the landlord offered, because we were so anxious to move in.

The very title of this thread is enough to give me the shudders. there is NOTHING worse than going to get school uniforms. PS don't expect to do it all in one trip. Or two. Or three. I don't see the problem - you go along, try the uniforms on, they give you the wrong size, you arrange for the tailor to change waist and length and go back and pick up a week later. Oh, OP's, don't be surprised if the blouse/shirt size is totally unrelated to the actual size of your child - dorter is 17 and is wearing blouses for age 10/11, and they fit perfectly and she's not undersized for her age :) <em>edited by simpleasabc on 05/07/2012</em>

Welcome to Dubai, ladies. Just to point out, unless things have changed since when I arrived, different branches of Zaks do uniforms for different schools, so check out their website to make sure you're sending hubby to the right branch :) I only found out when I rang Zaks to ask the same question you're asking, to be told I'd got the wrong branch for my daughter's school and I had to go to the Green Community, not to Jumeirah :) ETS: Doesn't seem to be clear from their website, so unless your school has made it obvious, best give them a ring to find out :) <em>edited by simpleasabc on 05/07/2012</em>

Sorry to hear what's happened to the absentee landlords, I know of at least one other management co here who is conning both tenants and landlords by charging the tenants more rent than the landlords know about. Reading this, I'm just wondering if there is some way the landlords can give the managing agents the power to accept the rent cheques, but only in the name of the landlords, to avoid this situation? I suppose it wouldn't work, what with the agent's fees and all..

Captain America to say you detest 12000 people is very harsh. i worked for ek as cabin crew for 6.5years its a little sad to think the hard work i put in was for nothing. Yes there are crew out there who ruin it but it is not fair to tie everyone to the same brush. If your dh was yelled at by a crew member i am sure he would have written to ek they take these things very seriously. wither you travel on ek as full fare passenger or staff passenger you do have rights and rude behavior is not tolerated. DH and i unfortunately had to put in a complaint about a premium cabin crew member and it was taken very seriously, even though we are only staff passengers. edited by ScottishGal4 on 04/07/2012 Ok then, when I have spent HUGE amount of money on flights, always Biz or 1st, then yes, I do expect to get ONE flight without an issue. It was DS that was shouted at, they would not dare shout at a man, I am sure. I have problems with meal choices in biz, always and every flight. I have stumbled upon cabin crew fumbling each other in the galley when I guess they assumed everyone was asleep, out of our family bookings we always have either a belt broken or a screen mal functioning that needs to be reset so many times, then they decide to reset the entire row….usually losing on average about 4 hours viewing time….and I could go on and on…Yes, I write and complain, after every flight. I always ask the Purser to log it for me, especially if it is something big like a BROKEN seat that they had to pad out with numerous seat pads…..and they give loads of air miles as compensation, usually 20-30,000 per complaint…..but I really don't want them, I just want a peaceful journey. Anyway, I shall be flying again in a few weeks, so lets see how that goes`! I have my fingers crossed, and I would truly like to say good things about EK CC, so I shall come back to this thread and update you! ETA: I have a few close friends who work for EK and they too would not like to hear that their hard work has been wasted, but they agree that there are a lot of cc that should be pulled. edited by CAPTAIN AMERICA !! on 04/07/2012 Wondering why you insist on travelling with them, since your experience is so poor?

Also check that they are working days and not weekends included. i.e. If you want to take 2 weeks holiday you only use up 10 days and not 12 days (Fri & Sat in-between) Calendar days will imply the latter, won't it?

Both beach dresses and raincoat [b'>and[/b'> cardies and jumpers and brolly, I would say :) We're going to London next week and I'm not bothering with the beach wear, am anticipating I'll be cold as am now used to the temperatures here and am notorious for complaining that 24degC (which is the forecast London high, with rain on Sunday, when I arrive) is too cold here on winter evenings.. I'm taking tights and will have to buy closed in shoes..

Hi, there, welcome to Dubai :) You've arrived just before the most difficult time of the year, it will only get better :) First, your daughter - here's a list of camps on this summ http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_families_Summer_Camps_In_Dubai_2012_8956.aspx Could I suggest she goes to the e-sports camp being held at WIS, so that way she will become familiar with the lay-out of her new school and it won't be so scary when term starts in September? Unfortunately, quite a lot of people leave for Ramadan so it might be difficult for her to meet people before school starts up again, but at least at camp, she'll be active. The trouble here is that people just put their children in camp for one or two days, or alternate days, not full weeks - at least the younger ones, maybe for older children it's different. OK, the good thing about it being Ramadan is that the roads are emptier and you could practice driving around to get your bearings. I would only suggest doing that in the quite quiet early morning, though, because as the day goes on and it gets nearer sunset, people who have been fasting are really affected by it and, dare I say it, have a tendency to drive even more dangerously than usual :( We arrived when our daughter was 15, nearly two years ago and I'm afraid my heart is still breaking over her tears.. She arrived determined to hate it, and still does. We moved her to the Sixth Form at WIS last year and she has enjoyed it - the trouble being that all bar one of the core Sixth-Form staff, and the wonderful Principal, left at the end of last term, so we're worried about her final year. That won't affect your own daughter much, though :) Good luck, if you don't meet other people at Emirates Towers and elsewhere through the other thread, give me a shout as I'll be back at the end of July.

Slightly off topic... does anyone know about the big pile up on the AD-Dubai road this morning? My Dh was in traffic from Jebel Ali nearly all the way to AD. He said there were lots of ambulances, helicopters. etc. Very sad way to start the day - hope it wasnt as bad as it looks. I would hate to be a learner driver here - no wonder the pass rate is so low. Can you imagine actually learning to try and control a vehicle AND having to check for loonies around you as well? The "hazards" I had to learn to look out for in England were people potentially crossing the road ahead, perhaps an old lady not looking, NOT tailgaters, idiots racing past swerving, cutting people up etc. It's actually a pleasure back home where people give you right of way with a friendly wave and don't honk if the traffic light turns green and you haven't moved in 0,5 seconds!! I miss people who give you a wave when you let them out :-) That's probably because they are in such a state of shock at somebody politely letting them out here that they react too late :) Haha probably, although when i do let people out it tends to be the Emirati men who give me a wave in return :-) I always say thank you if someone lets me out (or in) and I am neither Emirati nor male.

In the bathrooms there are windows and/or some sort of fan (the switch next to the light switch). Ahhh, I was wondering for what the switch is...seems that this kind of fan does not work in my bathroom. Have you or your landlord got a maintenance contract? You should get that sorted, it makes a bit of a difference.

I am about to do this, but once I get my licence can I use it anywhere - i.e. if I apply at MMI can I use it at African & Eastern? Also, are the prices shown in the shops without tax, is an additional 30% added on at the till? Thanks. Yes, you can use it anywhere. They are strict about you showing it now and add on the amount you have spent each time to make sure you don't go over your monthly purchase limit. I believe some A&E's are not as punctilious about this as MMI, but I could be wrong.You need to have the card on you even if it is in your husband's name. Yes, tax is 30% over and above the price marked on the shelves :(:( Have you visited RAK at all? Barracuda is an interesting place to stop.. My daughter weighed 2.6k when she was born full term and we cracked open a bottle of champagne when she reached the mighty weight of 10 kilos at about the age of 3.. The paediatrician pointed out children eat as much as they need and felt it was healthier for her to be "under" weight for her age than overweight and we agreed. She is still a healthy weight now, aged 17 and is very good at restricting her intake to her requirements, without having any sort of eating disorder. I would tell your sister not to worry.

the vents don't move in our villa. We looked at that so I presume SM's will be the same. The air con in our villa is atrocious and unadjustable, too - try as we might, we still get full blast in our faces all night. I hate snuggling under a duvet in such heat, it seems ridiculous and in any case, it's my face which is in the firing line. Still not accustomed to it, though finally used to the terrible racket..

If you're from the UK, have a look at this page first: http://www.justice.gov.uk/forms/opg/lasting-power-of-attorney We started the process for my mother for both finance and health and welfare last November and because of various problems, they are still not formally registered. It takes about 3 months after they've been signed for them to be registered, at the moment. We are paying a local solicitor in England to do it for my mother, but you can do it yourself if you are in England and that way it costs a lot less. Sorry, can't help for anywhere else. Good luck.

I've no real experience with maids but I think yours is pushing it a bit, at least with the bonus thing - it is up to you whether you want to give her a bonus or a raise or both and depending on her religion, I would be giving her a bonus at Christmas or Eid, not at the end of her first year of service. But as I say, I have never sponsored a maid and am not at all sure of my ground, this is just my first reaction.
