OP, I met a new Greek lady at the Pastels salon on Al Wasl Road the last time I was there a couple of weeks ago - maybe she's changed salons or floats between them, so you could try and get an appointment with her in another branch? Sorry, can't remember her name..

Love GA, MT and PJ :) My daughter believed for a long time that I had eyes in the back of my head (the car rear-view mirror being a useful tool for this!) and for a couple of Christmases, the hot line to Father Christmas to stop her misbehaving worked well!

I'm confused - I thought that "brunch" was by definition middle of the day?? - combining breakfast + lunch Are you looking for an early dinner buffet? Exactly! The word has lost its meaning in Dubai. In dubai brunch means buffet! That'd be why it's called "The Dubai Brunch" :)

I met the lady who does this at The Holistic Institute in Dubai (see Claire's link below), this afternoon. She also offers a 3 session Weight Loss Hypno plan, which has a CD to accompany it as well. I think I will plump (ha!) for that rather than putting myself through a fake op.. I really don't like the sound of that, though I am can well believe it works.

I've turned hyper-sensitive after all the threads on this issue - noticing it *everywhere* Same, it's awful! I walked around Spinneys yesterday with near constant cat-bum-mouth at all the preppy women in hotpants :) I just envy their wonderful figures, though didn't like wearing minis and hotpants even when my figure and youth would have allowed me to.

Isn't that weird, Hotpot, though Time Out says 5pm, the website for the Terrace has the BBQ on Saturdays from 12.00 to 4.00 pm, but the place itself apparently only opens at 5pm. Best to ring them up to find out, I should think!

Thanks for that, Claire, I'm on to it :) I have listened to the Paul McKenna CDs but found his voice so annoying after the first couple of times that I couldn't bear to listen as I wasn't soothed to sleep, I was kept awake with irritation at his horrible voice. The first couple of times I managed to listen without being irritated, it seemed to have a good effect on my portion control, so I'm hoping the hypnoband thing will work for me :)

The Terrace has a BBQ brunch inclusive of alcohol starting at 5pm. http://www.timeoutdubai.com/restaurants/reviews/31168-the-terrace Also another option would be to do afternoon tea at one of the hotels as they all start around 3pm and you get an assortment of savouries as well as the cakes, scones etc. With some afternoon teas, you can get a glass of champagne which is rather nice. Is it really moregood than Dubai , it worth to buy from there or there isnt difference ? Not quite sure what you mean by "the richest city", there is poverty and unemployment in many of the outer suburbs but not wishing to have a political discussion here.. If by LV you mean Louis Vuitton, sorry, I have no idea at all - why don't you look up the French website and compare the prices with what you would pay for the real thing here, which will be tax free, unlike Paris? Or are you looking for fakes, I'm a bit lost as to what you mean as I'll bet Karama is cheaper than anywhere in Paris!

Go to the Sunday Marche aux Puces - http://www.parisperfect.com/paris-flea-markets.php It might not be exactly what you want for pressies but is a great experience on a sunny day. I agree that Paris is not the best place for young kids, apart from EuroDisney and the Science Museum. there are the Jardins de Luxembourg and the Tuileries, I suppose. It's just Paris is such a "grown-up" city!

Hi, Narjess. What language does your son use in school, then? Are you French-Canadian? My daughter came from speaking English and Greek at home and French all the way through her schooling and with her friends, to Dubai, and though it took a long while for her to "get" all the terms, particularly in Maths and the Sciences, she now is so fluent in English she has lost confidence in her French, after only 18 months, so don't worry about that aspect for your son. From what I have heard about both schools you mention, I would be happier putting my child in the UAS. We have had the option to do so twice and only turned it down because the commute would be so terrible from our end of town. We like the atmosphere and ethic at the UAS.

Still couldn't find it :( I don't really know how to get to the Promenade in the first place - Marina Walk, yes, just, but I saw something called the Promenade in the Dubai Marina Mall the other day. Is that it, or something different? The Sheraton JBR doesn't show on my GPS and I landed up in Ibn Battuta the last time I tried to get to the Promenade off the SZR. Not a good look. Oh, well, no shakshuka for me :(

Sorry, Greenfield's KG programs are all full. Look into Gems Wellington DSO, they still have my KG 2 son on their accepted list even though I have told them 3 times we are turning down the spot. So there are still spots there. I will, but which one is DSO? I've now written to 17 schools. Blech. I just found it. Wow, that's far, isn't it? Seems like my husband would have quite the commute if we lived near the school. I think it may not be as bad as it seems. Remember, many maps don't show the current road layout, lots of roads are work in process. Our GPS constantly tells us we're driving off road when we're actually on a newly completed stretch of road it doesn't know about..

I just have a question? Where (countries) is not normal to have ears pierced as a baby? The whole of Europe, except for Spain and Portugal, I believe. It is a Spanish/Latin American tradition, which is why I think it is only customary in those two countries.

IMO they are a) unaware of how culturally insensitive they are being and b) don't care enough anyway. And the problem is compounded further by the fact that most people here don't spend time with Emiratis to understand their culture, what they find acceptable behaviour by us Expats etc. Everyone coming here should be made to attend a cultural awareness course! It should be part of the whole residence process. All well and good, BM, but how do you get to know Emiratis? I'd really love to get to know locals and be culturally aware, but given that I believe they only represent 6 per cent of Dubai's population, how is that likely to happen? I am happy to meet you for lunch with DH if you would like to meet one and find out a little bit more information :) Oh, thank you, how kind, that would be great. Verdeque, the only reason our daughter is not at the UAS is because of where we live, we decided the journey from our side of town was too long. Otherwise, we were really impressed with it. I would not suggest the DIA for a child with ADHD, in my opinion, they don't cater for "out of the ordinary children", but I might be wrong about that for younger ones.

Hi there! I think the best method is to make sure your landlord/estate agent gets pest control in before you move in. We didn't allow for this and are suffering for it now, with both cockroaches and rodents. Partly because we have a dog flap. It's not really bad enough for us to get pest control in now but if we'd realized before we moved in, we would have got the LL to do it for us.

When we lived there, our daughter used to do day camps with Village Camps. They were fine. They also do live in language and sports camps which I'm sure would work well, they are a reputable company.

Is it really jealousy? For me it's as simple as this: wearing revealing clothing is frowned upon in this culture and upsets some of the locals. I don't want to be tarred with the same brush because I'm an expat. I also don't want to lose the freedom we do have because of those who don't give a toss about whether their actions offend the locals. Yup. But we still need to buckle up in the back, Dubai, as well!

The Gulf News article was surprising, because it attracted 200 comments in a day when normally articles dont get more than 10 or 20. Shows that the average GN reader cares much more about dresses than dangerous driving which kills. It was also surprising to see people with Desi names calling for Saudi style restrictions. There needs to be some sort of rule so that the worst cases are avoided but i can help feel sorry for so many people who are outraged by miniskirts but find dangerous maniac driving acceptable in comparison, when was the last time you heard of a campaign by people outraged at dangerous driving ? There's Buckle up in the Back - but it's not run by Emirati people.

It's been 21 years since we honeymooned there, and I was of course in a haze of young love and can't remember the details (we booked the day before we got married!) but I'm fairly sure we went to the Tongsai Bay hotel, in its infancy. It was a gorgeous place to stay, apart from there being a superfluity of Russian businessmen accompanied by underage girls. At the time, it was all about couples, definitely no kids' club, but things may well have changed after all these years.

Have you tried earlybird.ae? They deliver to Umm Suqeim regularly on Thursdays. It's not clear to me if you can ask them to deliver on other days at extra cost. The Dubai Laundry is good and goes all over Dubai.

Spinney's sell the 0% natural yoghurt. They used to sell full fat, but I haven't seen it for a while. They also sell some flavoured Fage Total yoghurts but amn't sure if they are zero percent or full fat.

Definitely worth a visit! My only gripe is that it could be be better situated, with a view of the Creek. A real taste of the Mediterranean in the Middle East. If we didn't live so far away from it, I'd be there every week-end, just love it!
