I don't think the food is amazing, but the location is - Beachcomber's in the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, on the beach, with a view of my favourite Dubai landmark, the Burj al Arab. Children's menu and play area, buffet for the adults may be quite expensive - we went a while ago and it was about AED 200 per head, without drinks. http://www.jumeirah.com/en/Hotels-and-Resorts/Destinations/Dubai/Jumeirah-Beach-Hotel/Restaurants--Nightlife/Casual-Dining/Beachcombers/

It won't help the OP, but may at least alert other parents on here to a potential problem. Now I understand the saying "the d*v** is in the detail".

There used to be a lady psychologist for children and teens at the Dubai London Clinic on Jumeirah Beach Road, but she went on maternity leave and I don't know if she has been replaced. Perhaps this lady has taken over from her? I have spoken to her on the phone in the past and she sounded very helpful: http://www.dubailondonclinic.com/sabina_christensen.php

We have checked, it says upto 18, however it does appear they havent had many students here till the age of 18, so no one has seen fit to challenge the policy. DH wants to gather evidence to indicate that other companies pay until the end of secondary education so he can present to HR. Is it really worth pushing for? It may effect your DH's job security in the long run...... A sum like that can put a large hole in the family budget and you can hardly change a child to a different, less expensive school, in their last year of schooling.

I think you may have to decide whether keeping in the job market whilst you are here is more or less important to you than being paid what you know you would be worth back home.

My husbands contract says ' a maximum of 3 children until the age of 18' I suppose you could mess with the semantics and argue that it doesn't specify "till the day of their 18th birthday" and it could be understood to mean the academic year during which they turn 18?

Isn't there a clause which says they'll pay fees until the child leaves school or turns 18, whichever is later? That's downright unfair. Sorry, can't help as we have to pay our own anyway.

I think she meant per person. Still looking - either booked out or CRAZY expensive (neigh on 2k a night) if it's decent!!! Looking mainly at St. Germain area but others same prices. Had found citadene aparthotel - EXACTLY what we're looking for - but at 1700 AED a night without anything it's a bit too steep!!! sTH SIMILAR BUT CHEAPER would be sooooooo good! MaiTai, I think you might have to revise your ideas, Paris is a really expensive city to stay in. Maybe try ebookers, see if they've got a good deal? Do you actually want to stay for Easter itself? That's when hotel prices tend to go up in Europe anyway and it's one of the most popular times to visit Paris anyway.

Cheese spaetzle, that's a new one on me. Looks good, JS. Forgive my ignorance, but are Swiss and German spaetzle the same thing? I have only eaten spaetzle in Switzerland, so thought it was a typical Swiss thing, didn't think of trying the German restaurants here. It would never have occurred to me to make it from scratch, pasta making is not part of my heritage and I've never heard of a spaetzle press before;) I'll go and have a look in the Organic Store, I think I may have spotted it there once (spaetzle, not a press). <em>edited by simpleasabc on 13/01/2012</em>

Mai-Tai, I'll let Emily answer that, I'm sure she knows Paris much better than I ever did. I must say, I don't think AED360 per night is v expensive for One Night in Paris, I would think you'd be looking at well over AED 1000 per night for a family room.

The Hotel du Pantheon is well-situated and we considered it good value for money, and I think it has a family room, though it's a long time since I stayed there. It is part of this group of hotels: http://www.hotels-paris-rive-gauche.com/ I can also recommend the Hotel des Grands Hommes. The group used to include an apartment hotel, which we really liked, though it's ages since we've been there. It seems it is now being run by different people, but have a look: http://www.residencehenri4.com/ Bear in mind that if you stay in an hotel without a restaurant, it will be cheaper and you will usually be given coffee and croissants or bread and jam for breakfast. Paris is an extremely expensive city to stay in, though and you get very little hotel room for your Euro. These are not recent recommendations as last time we went to Disneyland, we stayed in an ultra cheap flea-pit in Soissons (not our choice), where our car was broken into, but that's another story.

I was fitted with a Marie Jo L'Aventure bra by Rigby & Peller three years ago and it's still my favourite and comfiest. Believe there's a standalone shop in Dubai Mall I keep meaning to try. Sorry, what do you mean by a standalone shop? I've been longing to try Rigby & Peller but never been organized enough..

If we didn't both have aged p's who we've been hugely subsidizing for a fair number of years, we'd be laughing by now. That's not Dubai's fault, though. We'd have been well in the black after our first year, if we hadn't got outstanding debts racked up on credit cards and to friends, by our mothers. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 12/01/2012</em>

The English son of friends of ours was working in Amsterdam for a while and decided to buy a flat there. He seemed to have no problems buying and sold quite happily when he moved back to England. I'm intrigued at the idea of one-year-olds understanding a magician's performance:) As Lilli34 says, the first birthday celebration is all about the parents, so if the parents need entertainment other than cooing over their babies and discussing nappy products, then put on a show which is age (ie adult) appropriate, the babies will be fine and probably sleep through it anyway :)

I'd try it on with holy stuff, get packers to put it in bottom of boxes labelled kitchen equipment. Otherwise, bring it in your suitcases on the plane. There's an unnecessarily big deal made about that kind of thing, given the amount of Christian churches there are at Jebel Ali. I could be completely wrong, but that's the impression I have.

Oh, SD, I do hope your OH gets out soon. Not to be scare-mongering, but this unrest has been going on for a while, hasn't it? OTOH, you can't really tell much from news reports. Anyone would have thought that Athens was full of violent demonstrators before Christmas, but in fact our friends found that everything was normal apart from in the area round Syntagma Square, where the Greek Parliament buildings are.

I think it would be for me, Rowellian, always being sure you would be able to move your children to a smaller school where there is more going on and more opportunities. Heard good things about the Horizon school in that respect, if yours are still in primary.

I think I fell in love with my husband the day I met him, which was at a wedding and before our first date. I didn't know I wanted to marry him for a while after that, though, but ours was a long-distance relationship at first as he lived in Geneva and I lived in London. My teenaged daughter changed schools last September, after her first year in Dubai, though within the same curriculum. We are more comfortable here in a school run with an English approach and she is enjoying her school-life more. Perhaps I'm the wrong person to consult, sorry.

Just get loads of wrapping paper, they're happier playing with that than the actual toys given as gifts at that age! They really don't need anything special when they're just one, the celebration is more for the parents than the children as the babies have no idea what's going on!

Are the children not his responsibility as well? Shouldn't he help you with them and be part of the family when he takes days off rather than taking "me" time? Maybe a little different if they are yours by a previous marriage, but otherwise, it's not just not celebrating your birthday with you that I'd be hacked off about.. Oh, and a belated Happy Birthday and may next year be better. I'm at the age where I sort out what we're going to do for any family celebrations, otherwise nothing would happen. I've already booked a week-end away for my birthday and told him not to be away for work then!

Quite a few children changed from IB schools into the new Wellington at DSO just this past September, and were able to go into their age-appropriate grade and therefore skipped a year. The school had to apply to the KDHA but all the children I know of who applied were allowed to make the jump. I also know of a couple children who went from IB into DESS and skipped a year. The school has to be willing to apply though, and I know that some schools won't do it. So unless the rules have changed in the past 6 months, it is the school that doesn't want the hassle to apply for you. but its too late now to switch, you have to do it before middle of november otherwise its next academic year before you can do it. Yes, but OP not looking to switch before September, which is why this is odd..

Either the rules have changed very recently, or they are being misinterpreted. Will be interested to hear what the KHDA has to say to you about it. At that age, the curriculum really doesn't matter a fig.

How old is your son? What year would he be going in to? It may be that going from the IB to the British exam system, he would have to repeat a year, although I understand you can get dispensation from the KHDA in some cases.
